about cranbrook
In the middle of the broad Rocky Mountain Trench,
Cranbrook (population 19,161) boasts more sunshine
than anywhere else in British Columbia (approximately
2228.6 hours annually, according to Environment
Canada), and it has a feeling of openness reminiscent of
the Canadian prairies.
Cranbrook is a railway town, a mill town, a commercial
centre, and an island in a sea of golf courses. It has a
modern theatre and a lively arts community, a
professional hockey team, and a remarkable museum
that captures the experience of the golden age of rail
travel in Canada.
For people who live in the small towns of the Kootenay
Rockies, however, Cranbrook is the closest thing to a
big city. The strip that runs through town is an avenue of
distractions packed with fast food outlets, hotels,
automotive businesses and big-box stores.
Cranbrook is another great spot for mountain biking,
skiiing and hiking (there are three provincial parks
nearby) and even gold panning. Also, there are several
natural hot springs in the area: Fairmont Hot Springs
CRANBROOK
British Columbia
2390 Seyom Crescent, Merritt BC
and Lussier Hot Springs, and the less accessible are the
Dewar Creek Hot Springs, and Ram Creek Hot Springs.
These are accessed from Skookumchuk via Premier
Lake Road and Sheep Creek Road North. (A
snowmobile or cross-country skis are required to reach
the Ram Creek pools in winter.)
Because Cranbrook receives so much sunshine, it is a
fairly dry city throughout the year, and when
precipitation does fall, a good percentage of it will be in
the form of snow. Also, according to Environment
Canada, the city experiences some of the lightest wind
speeds year-round with few foggy days, and has among
the highest average barometric pressure of any
Canadian city.
