out of the
light
This book is a visual exploration of the contrasting themes; light and dark. It delves into imagery such as the darkness
of the sea and storms to the brightness that is brought forth by lightbulbs, the sun, fire and lighthouses. There are also
psychological ideas that focus on depression and anxiety. However, it shows that there is also freedom that can be
found from those things. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This book’s content is diverse, but the consistent idea is that light is
piercing. Darkness is only the absence of light, and once light shines, no corner is hidden from it.
dark
Darkness comes to destroy; destroy all things
that are good and beautiful. Lies are spoken into
the heart, lies about appearance, worth, identity,
shame, guilt...the list could go on and on.
How are we to fight these lies of
darkness when they are spoken so
skillfully and convincingly?
the sun sprinkles light on a dry and darkened land
The land is thirsty for something. A spritual drought has been drying up everything that is good
and lush and upworthy. It’s a desert, and it seems like there isn’t any hope. But then, the sun
arrives and brings light into the darkness; not harsh blinding light that burns your skin,
but light that is full of truth and grace. Everything begins to bud and blossom again,
showing the potential that was just below the surface. Hatred, doubt and shame
had kept anything beautiful stifled and hidden but the light of love came
and it’s sprinkles of goodness brought life.

how dim the world must have been
The storms came and so did the doubt. The sun
that had established goodness and life is chased
away in the downpour of turmoil and struggle. The
electric pulse of lightning frightens. It’s not like the
steady warmth of the sun; it’s scary and intense.
But if only you remembered...the rain is necessary
for growth, even if it’s scary and hard. Trust that
the sun will come back and with it, a rainbow, a
reminder that all is well and the covenant remains.

fire is never a gentle master
It brings warmth and life, but when out of
bounds, it brings destruction. Fire has no
regard for lush fields of crops or green
mountain forests or homes full of memories.
It eats away everything that is good
and leaves ghostly skeletons in it’s wake.

The real fight for light and truth is in the
mind. The lies that ravage the soul like a forest
fire leave the heart and mind like stones,
hard and blackened and cold. Maybe the
storms became too much to handle, and the
lies that were spoken: “you aren’t enough,”
“you’re ugly,” “no one loves you,” “you deserve
lonliness;” those lies took a foothold
and kept the truth stifled. This battle requires
a look at your true identity...who you were
created to be. Slowly, real truth will creep in,
and eventually you will start to believe it.
