Palvalathevan (Rana). Shiva decides to help Avanitka
and enters the Mahizhmati Kingdom.
• As soon as he lands there, he comes to know that he
has a past associated with both Mahizhmati and
Palvalathevan . What is that past ? What does Shiva
have to do with Mahizhmati ? Who is Shiva in real life?
PLUS POINTS:
• The extravagant sets, spectacular visuals and the sheer
magnitude has not been showcased in any Indian film
before. One cannot shy away to laud Rajamouli for
thinking something this huge and also executing it on
such a mammoth scale. The war sequences and the way
they have been executed are in true Hollywood style.
• Prabhas is terrific in a dual role and is the apt choice as
Baahubali. No one except him could have done justice
to the role which is larger than life and has many heroic
moments. His sheer screen presence and emotional
performance will be immensely loved by his fans. As
expected, Rana is menacing as the baddie Palvalathevan
• It is quite surprising to see the amount of detailing that
has gone into every aspect of this film. Tamanna is
gorgeous as Avantika and plays her part well. Ramya
Krishna is elegant as Shivagami and brings a lot of
depth to the film. Nasser and Satyaraj play their roles
perfectly. Second half of the film has a lot of emotions
which elevate the film to another level.
MINUS POINTS:
The story line of Baahubali is quite routine and
predictable. Anushka has nothing much to do in
the film as her character will be revealed only
during the second part.
Certain war sequences have been dragged out
and could have been trimmed to decrease the run
time. There is so much hype surrounding the film
that certain unwanted songs side tracks the film.
TECHNICAL ASPECTS:
Baahubali is by far the most technically brilliant
film that has come out from Indian cinema. Each
and every frame in the film is sheer magic. The
sets, VFX work and graphics are just out of this
world. One should be really proud to see such
grand visuals especially in a Multi language film.
Music is decent but the background score could
have been better.. Sabu Cyril has done a
marvelous job with the sets. Be it the palace sets,
the kingdom surroundings or the warfare
equipment, everything looks impressive. Senthil
Kumar’s camera work is mind blowing. His
awesome visuals are nicely complimented by the
stunning VFX. The water fall scenes and some
shots during the fight sequence with Kaalakeya
have been executed brilliantly.
The way Rajamouli has conceptualized the visuals
will be a learning lesson for a generation of
aspiring film makers. Even though Rajamouli’s
screenplay dips a bit here and there, his larger
than life approach is what makes this film such a
visual treat.
Production: Aamir Khan, UTV Motion Pictures
• Dangle is an emotionally made biographical tale that talks about a former National level
wrestler who could not win a Gold medal for India due to his personal commitments but fulfills
his wish by making his two daughters win medals at the Commonwealth Games. It is not the
first time we are witnessing a film that speaks about a wrestler’s life, but no matter how many
films you might have watched, Dangal stands unique in a lot of ways. Director Nitesh Tiwari
has to be credited for the way he has treated the film with not much force fitted theatrics yet
grabbing the attention of the audience throughout the film. Yes, there were one or two dramatic
moments which looked essential for the script and they were not overdone.
• The performance are riveting and the visuals are stunning. The wrestling sequences are brutally
realistic and were shot so well. Aamir Khan proves yet again why he is called Mr.Perfectionist.
He only plays a guiding role here and lets the girls who play his daughters in the film take the
center stage on most occasions.
• Let’s not forget the show stealers Fatima Sana Shaikh(Geeta) and Sanya Malhotra(Babita), the
girls who played Aamir Khan’s daughters. They showed great intensity and grit when it came to
the wrestling sequence and also performed equally well when they had to enact an emotional
scene. Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar, who played the younger version of Geeta and Babita
made their screen time count as well. Nitesh has extracted some great acting from all the
supporting artist too. Not a single frame looked amateurish.
• Dangal is adequately supported by three technicians. Pritam(Music), Sethu Sriram(Camera) and
Ballu Saluja(Cuts). All three did their job picture perfect. A heartwarming music, a camera that
had captured wrestling like never before and an editor who stood as an unsung hero.
• Finally, we have a film that talks about the real struggle of a wrestler. How much they had to
lose to win a medal for the nation? People who watch this film might never take wrestling as
their profession, but one thing is for certain, the respect for the sport will undoubtedly
increase…
VERDICT: Aamir Khan hits it out of the park yet again with another emotional masterpiece!!!
REVIEW
Malgudi Days – R. K. Narayan
INSPIRATIONAL INITIATOR
FOR YOUTHS
This is a real time story which
happened and which I have seen and
felt proud of about a 76 years young
and energetic man.
"While other writers rely on paragraphs and pages to get
their points across, Narayan extracts the full capacity of
each sentence, so much so that his stories seem bound
by an invisible yet essential mechanism, similar to the
metrical and quantitative constraints of poetry."
-- Anonymous
Being fond of comics got me in to reading “Malgudi
Days”. Malgudi is a fictional Indian town created by R.K.
Narayan, conceived in such realistic detail. Most of
Narayan's works take place in Malgudi, and the more
you read about the place, the more you start to feel like
it exists — that you might like to visit it someday, too.
"Whom next shall I meet in Malgudi? That is the
thought that comes to me when I close a novel of
Mr. Narayan's. I do not wait for another novel. I wait to
go out of my door into those loved and shabby streets..."
— Graham Greene
The concentration of Narayan's prose is astonishing. In
this short story collection, Narayan introduces us to a
number of characters who inhabits in Malgudi, each
with their own conflicts. Some are strictly worldly
predicaments, while some verge on magical realism.
The stories are brief, but immensely satisfying. You'd
never guess that they were written over the course of
four decades — from the '40s to the '80s — because the
book is so wonderfully cohesive as a whole. As much as I
enjoy short stories, there are very few collections I can
think of that maintain the same level of quality
throughout: it seems like there are always a few stories
you have to slog through in between the really good
ones. In Malgudi Days, that isn't the case. You may not
necessarily sympathize with every character's plight, but
each tale carries its own intrigue. As far as I'm
concerned, there's no weak link here.
There you have it: poetic sensibilities concentrated into
prose so potent that it only takes a few pages to tell
each well-rounded tale.
I loved reading this book. I'd recommend it to anyone
looking to dip their toes into SA lit, just as much as I would
to anyone already immersed in the genre who needs to
catch up on some of the classics (as I do.) I'm
enchanted by the Malgudi spell, and I'm already
perusing online bookstores to arrange for my next visit
back.
One day, when I was standing near an
ice cream shop I saw an old man
having small plants in his hand. First I
thought that he was taking those to his
home. But it was only later I realised he
had brought them to plant it. Then I
heard the people saying that the old
man used to plant trees regularly and
most of the trees in the area was
planted by him.
Being a student it got me thinking why
we did not indulge in such social
activities. I also realised what the old
man did was to help the future
generations. This inspired many to do
the same in order to conserve and
preserve the environment.
