President’s Message Winter 2012

2012! As we welcome in our new year, we welcome you to a fresh start 

and new beginning to our programming and school year. 

I hope that you are finding your way into the Jewish Center to take 

classes, visit our video library, meet your friends, and enjoy our 

welcoming and warm atmosphere. There is much to be proud of. 

Many improvements to our building make the physical space even 

more special! Our new gym floor, for example, is now a ‘floating’ floor 

which will make gym classes for our students, for Hebrew Day School, 

for Zumba, basketball, volleyball and Israeli Dancing exceptional and 

comfortable. Come and take a peek and please join us for a class some 

time! 

Our staff is eager and ready to serve you in many ways! The Jewish 

Book Festival this past fall was very well attended. We created a new 

coffee shop during the event and many new faces were seen at the JCC. 

The Cultural Arts and Education Department is now gearing up for 

our annual Jewish Film Festival. Have you thought about joining our 

committees, sponsorship, and attending this year? We are counting on 

our past sponsors and always appreciate bringing in new people to attend 

this spectacular week of film, fun, food, and flavorful discussions! Please 

mark your calendars!

GYM FLOOR UPDATE 

After much research, exploration and gathering of suggestions and insights, 

we are very pleased to share that 

THE JCC HAS A NEW GYM FLOOR! 

The gym concrete was tested, treated, sealed and tested again. After many discussions with experts in 

the field and those who have utilized various types of gym floors, we replaced our parquet wood floor 

with a new solid wood floor installed via tongue and groove method with several methods of moisture 

barriers in place underneath. This will raise our floor a little higher than the entrance to the gym, which 

will necessitate a nice enhancement to our hallway near the gym. 

The gym is a great place for parties, events, mitzvot and more.

in Honor of Martin Luther king Day 

January 16, 2012 

2:00-3:30 p.m. at the JCC 

Families are invited to join us for a 

fun afternoon featuring activities 

relating to the theme “Unite 

for a Cause” and an inspiring 

performance by Singers Of United 

Lands (S.O.U.L.). A snack will be 

served after the performance. 

The S.O.U.L. group was such a hit last MLK Day that we are 

bringing them back for another visit! S.O.U.L. is a unique 

quartet of four professional young adult singers, each from 

a different country. There are four new performers this year, 

representing Columbia, Zambia, Australia, and Canada, so 

audiences will be treated to all new sounds and rhythms.

JUDAISM IN JANUARY 

SIX WEEKS MINI COURSE - January 19- February 23, 2012

The Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) as we know it did not come into existence all at once. Rather, it 

developed gradually, over centuries, into its current canonical form. This process was not without 

controversy; some books that have been regarded as canonical for nearly two thousand years were, 

at one time, the source of much dispute. 

At the same time, certain books that were once widely regarded as canonical have dropped out of 

the canon. In this set of classes we will explore the question, “What is the Bible?” by examining six 

test cases -- close calls and near-misses in the formation of our sacred scripture. 

Week 1 (January 19): There’s something about Esther: What’s a nice girl like you doing in a canon like this? 

Week 2 (January 26): Maccabees: Non-canonical Book, Canonical Festival 

Week 3 (February 2): Ecclesiastes: Fatality, Fatalism, and Futility 

Week 4 (February 9): Ecclesiasticus (Ben Sira): Jesus Who? 

Week 5 (February 16): Song of Songs (No one under 18 admitted without a parent or guardian)

Announcing a 4 week Jewish Play Reading workshop led by Kate Mendelof , 

University of Michigan Residential College Drama professor, director of Ann Arbor’s 

annual, outdoor Shakespeare in the Arb, now in its 11th year. 

Come and explore the world of great Jewish plays written by Jewish writers in 

a supportive environment. Here is a chance to act and learn. If the program is

The Early Childhood Center will be accepting applications for child care and preschool 

programs for the 2012 – 13 school year beginning Thursday March 1st 

for children and siblings currently enrolled in our program. Applications for member 

families of JCC affiliate organizations ( TBE, BIC, HDS, JCS, etc.) will begin Thursday 

March 8th and enrollment for the general public begins Thursday March 15th. 

Child Care programs are offered to children ages 2 months to 5 years old in our state 

licensed and NAEYC accredited center. Our Active Learning center offers a High/Scope 

curriculum to best meet the needs of each age group. Our highly educated, warm 

and nurturing staff helps children to excel in all aspects of their lives. All children 3 

years and older participate in a pre-school program designed to prepare children for 

kindergarten. The center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

Children can register for full or part time. 

A half day pre-school program (mornings or afternoons) is offered for children 3 to 5 

years old. We offer a High/Scope curriculum which is an active learning approach to 

education for young children. 

All of our programs integrate Jewish curriculum with our High/Scope curriculum. 

Children in our pre-school classes also participate in our outdoor summer camp program.

the world in wonder and joy as your child explores the world around himself/herself. Children will play with manipulative and 

educational toys and engage in arts and crafts, music and rhythm, and supervised activities. A visit to our Monkey room for 

climbing and crawling will be included in this class.

As American Jews, we find comfort, community, and continuity in the 

knowledge that as we are celebrating a holiday like Passover. Jews all 

over the world are celebrating as well. Here in Ann Arbor we are inviting 

our oldest and youngest members to come together and share the 

ritual items that can be found on Passover table everywhere. Children 

and seniors will be paired to share their ritual items and stories that go 

with them. 

On Tuesday April 3rd the Jewish Community Center Older Adult program 

and the Early Childhood Center will celebrate Passover together. 

Children will also participate in an interactive telling of the Passover 

story. Songs and dances from the holiday will enliven our celebration. 

A Passover style lunch will be served to everyone who attends. This 

program will begin at 11:00 a.m. Please make your reservations by

Theater Workshop for Preschoolers

Cooking children’s favorite foods using healthy whole ingredients will be the basis of this class. Children will be taste

Afternoons are Full of Fun at the ECC 

Everyone knows that mornings in the ECC preschool rooms are packed full of wonderful experiences for 

our preschoolers. But did you know that afternoons are also really enriching? Here’s what’s happening 

on various afternoons in the preschool program: 

• ECC Director Noreen De Young is visiting the classroom with her iPod full of Israeli dance music 

to lead the children in Israeli dance! 

• During afternoon work time, children are following through on plans made in the morning, and 

returning to projects begun earlier in the day. 

• The preschoolers head to the JCC's gym for an extra helping of Gym with Kim! 

• Children are participating in rich music and movement activities incorporating literacy 

and math concepts. 

• ECC Assistant Director Peretz Hirshbein brings his box of costumes to the classroom for dramatic 

tellings of Torah stories. The children participate in acting out the story each week!

CAMP RAANANA NEWS 

New Location on Cedar Lake in Chelsea! 

It’s never to early to start making plans for one of the most important experiences for your child – Jewish 

summer camp. Camp Raanana, the JCC’s outdoor summer day camp for children entering grades K-8, is the 

perfect place for campers to explore new interests, build Jewish identity, and have fun outside! 

Camp Raanana has outgrown its home at Independence Lake and will be moving 

this year to an exciting new location on Cedar Lake, in Chelsea, MI! 

In addition to swim lessons, arts & crafts, music, Judaics, free swim, weekly 

special events or field trips, Shabbat celebrations, overnight trips, 

specialties for grades 3-5, a Pioneer Adventure Program for grades 

6-8, and much more, Camp Raanana will now be providing expanded 

nature programming as well as archery and boating for all age groups! 

Daily bus transportation is provided from the JCC.

JCC Snow Days SAVE THE DATE: March Events

to winter weather conditions, the JCC 

Youth Department provides a Snow Day 

program from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This 

program is for JCC members ONLY in 

grades K-5; middle school students are 

also welcome to participate as helpers for a 

reduced fee. Students will enjoy games, gym time, 

and fun in the snow under the supervision of the 

JCC Youth Director and other staff. Students should 

bring a nut free, meat free lunch and appropriate 

clothes for playing outside (weather permitting).

YOUTH & TEEN NEWS 

Join Ann Arbor’s 2012 Maccabi Team! 

The JCC Maccabi Games are an incredible opportunity for teens to experience a 

week of Olympic-style athletic competition, community service projects, Jewish 

learning, and social activities with other Jewish teens from around the world. This 

year, Ann Arbor athletes have been invited to the following site: 

Memphis, TN from August 5 – August 10 

For the Memphis Games, teens must be 13-16 years old as of 7/31/12 and can participate 

in boys’ baseball, girls’ basketball, boys’ or girls’ soccer, dance, swimming, table tennis, 

tennis, track-and-field and new this year: boys’ lacrosse and co-ed flag football. 

Join us at the JCC on Wednesday, January 18 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for 

an informational meeting. Talk to previous participants, learn about costs, time 

commitments and anything you need to know to participate in this amazing experience. 

A limited number of spots on the team are available! Teens of 

all athletic abilities are welcome to participate (special requirements apply

CAMP RAANANA SEEKS 2012 STAFF MEMBERS 

Counselor-in-Training Program for teens who have completed 8th or 9th grade: 

This fun and supportive program is designed for teens who are making the transition from camper to 

counselor. CITs receive training and hands-on experience in child development, leadership and team-building, 

conflict resolution, program planning, and first aid. CITs also get to participate in social activities and special 

field trips. Teens may register for one or both four-week CIT sessions (pending space availability). Costs for the 

CIT program will be published in the camp brochure, due to hit mailboxes in February, and will be posted at 

www.CampRaanana.com. 

Junior Counselor Program for teens who have completed 10th, 11th, or 12th grade: 

This is a paid position which requires a four or eight week commitment. Junior Counselors work directly 

with a group head counselor who acts as a mentor and involves the Junior Counselor in planning and 

implementing all camp activities. Applicants must have previous experience in a childcare or camp setting 

and must be able to attend several pre-camp training sessions in June. 

Head Counselor & Specialist Positions: 

Camp Raanana is seeking mature and talented individuals to fill several nine-week Head Counselor and 

Specialist positions. Applicants for these positions must have completed at least one year of college (or 

equivalent), have previous experience in a camp setting, and be able to attend several pre-camp training 

sessions in June. Positions available may include group head counselor, middle school travel group counselor, 

lifeguard, arts & crafts specialist, Judaic programs specialist, music specialist, special needs coordinator, and 

aftercare coordinator. A Program & CIT Coordinator position to work alongside the Camp Director and 

Assistant Director may also be available. 

A limited number of CIT, JC, and counselor/specialist positions are available; interested individuals

SWIM WITH KIM - Expert swim lessons for students ages 4-11!

Tuesdays, January 17 – February 28 (6 weeks - No Class 2/21) for K-5 

Special session for 4-year-olds entering Kindergarten in September 

Thursdays, January 19 – March 2 (6 weeks - No Class 2/23) 

HDS gym teacher, Camp Raanana waterfront director, and experienced swim 

instructor Kim Braun will offer swim lessons at High Point School for swimmers 

and non-swimmers ages 4-11, beginning January 17. 

Kim loves teaching children to enjoy and appreciate the water and has been 

teaching swimming for over 20 years. She is certified as a lifeguard, Water Safety 

Instructor, and CPR and lifeguard instructor. 

The January-February session of Swim with Kim will run for 6 weeks; registration 

is due by January11. Parents will be responsible for bringing their children to the 

lessons at High Point School by 5:30 pm. The lessons will last until 6:30 and children 

should be picked up at the school by 6:45 after they have changed. Contact 

Shoshana Jackson for help with arranging carpools with other participants. 

High Point School is located at 1735 S Wagner Rd in Ann Arbor. It is about a 

15 minute drive from the JCC. In the event that High Point School’s pool is closed for repairs 

or maintenance on any of the class days, the class will be held at Saline Recreation Center 

(1866 Woodland Drive in Saline, about 12 minutes from the JCC). Parents will be notified in 

advance of location changes.

Dragon Warrior Po and his friends fighting an evil villain 

who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer 

China and destroy kung fu.

In honor of MLK Day, School’s Out participants will take part in the JCC’s Youth Social 

Action Day. This year’s theme is “Unite for a Cause!” In the morning, students will 

participate in games and activities relating to this theme, and in the afternoon they will 

enjoy the community-wide Singers Of United Lands (S.O.U.L.) performance as well as 

special workshops with the S.O.U.L. singers. Registration is due by January 11. 

Tuesday, January 31 (AAPS & other students) 

Enjoy a fun day of winter-themed activities, featuring either a fun field trip or a special 

presentation! Program details will be availably in mid-January. Registration is due by 

January 26.

Physical activity causes the body to produce endorphins, which are 

naturally produced chemicals that help a person 

to feel more peaceful and happy. 

Exercises during this 

workout are performed 

while sitting on a chair or 

standing. 

Maria emphasizes that 

these exercises are “easy 

does it,” fun and to be 

enjoyed by all at 

their own pace. 

v Each day, the class starts with some Chinese selfmassage, 

yoga-stretching and Qigong, which 

awakens the body by drawing energy from nature. 

v The main part of the class uses key principles from 

Inner Source (drawing energy from ones own body), 

and techniques based on circular, spiral and figureof-eight 

movements. 

v These movements are designed to increase: muscle 

strength, flexibility and balance. 

v Continued participation in the class will improve 

coordination, vigor and vitality 

v The emphasis is on smooth fluid movements and 

proper breathing. Some of the exercises may use 

weights or bands for increased muscle strengthening 

v The class ends with a few minutes of Tai Chi.
