Elora Festival Brochure 2017

In the summer of 1979, Professor Michael Purvis-Smith fell in love with the beautiful village of Elora and dreamed of establishing a festival of music there fashioned after the world-renowned Tanglewood Festival in Massachusetts. A small group of like-minded residents, including music student Noel Edison, shared his vision and pooled their efforts to present the first Three Centuries Festival the following August. The critics were generous in their praise — the inaugural Festival was a hit! The annual Festival continued to grow in stature and fame; the refining of its mission and name along the way resulted in the formal establishment of the Elora Festival in 1990. Over the years the Elora Festival has showcased such Canadian luminaries as Holly Cole, Sarah McLachlan, Moe Kaufman, Jesse Cook, The Tenors, Dawn Upshaw, Randy Bachman, Ben Heppner, Steven Page, Molly Johnson and others. Now entering its 38th season as one of Ontario’s preeminent music festivals, The Elora Festival celebrates Canada’s 150th by showcasing the rich musical heritage and diversity of some of Canada’s critically acclaimed talent in the choral, classical, jazz, and folk music realm. Included are the legendary Gordon Lightfoot, Angela Hewitt, Joni NehRita, Charles Richard-Hamelin, Cecilia Quartet, Karina Gauvin, and more! For tickets and information, visit www.elorafestival.ca
