My artwork takes a critical view of social,
political and cultural issues. Often
referencing Greek Mythology, my work
explores the varying relationships between
popular culture and exploring the human
female form. While I use a combination
of fabric and cutting-edge technology;
however, the processes in each project my
methodology is consistent.
My current project investigates reflections,
mirrors, and the reality of ‘the selfie
generation’.
My Philosophy with Fashion editorial is
heavily reliant on “attainable beauty”.
I intentionlly choose to use a member
of the ‘selfie generation’ and refused to
use photoshop to enhance my model’s
features. Pores and skin discolorations
may be evident; however, this photoshoot
serves to make a greater point. We are all
prefect despite our ‘flaws’.
CONCEPT
MISE EN ABYME // INTO THE ABYSS
The self is dirtier than you think. Narcissism is a detrimental notion to the self. It allows
the individual to praise the substandard qualities of his or her being: their physical
qualities. The key to a healthy life is an idea of maintaining a balance within the idea of
narcissism. Imagine a balancing scale, one side is being too narcissistic, an indication
of being too internally insecure, and the other side being not narcissistic at all, an
indication of lacking any inkling of self-worth. The mirror is the device that propels the
exponential growth of this disease. The image that appears in the mirror is generated
with the reflection of light. And abstractly, the mirror is also a symbol for reflection
of the self. Reflection of our past experiences and our past sorrows. Fortunately, selfgrowth
begins with reflection of the self because that is when we truly accept our
past errors and truly learn from our mistakes. The mirror makes our flaws, defects, and
imperfections visible. It does not hide the truth. It destroys any wall or counterfeit idea
we have about ourselves. Or, it can do the very opposite. Unfortunately, narcissism is
praised in our modern day society. The Internet is now littered with selfies that no one
truly cares to see. The shattered mirror is the result of the denial of when an individual
is shown the unfiltered reality and uses physical force to smash the mirror in hopes to
repel it. It is also a motif found within the collection and adding textures and emotion
to these garments.
LOOKING FORWARD
This collection is a shout against the current routine practices of vanity by the ‘Selfie
Generation’. In early Greek Mythology,The oracle of Apollo at Delphi demanded of the ancient
Greek ‘know thyself,’ and mirrors have often been used as symbols of wisdom and selfknowledge.
But Apollo also required ‘nothing in excess,’ and the mirror can just as easily imply
vanity, an unhealthy amount of self-regard. The peril of over admiring one’s mirror image is
encapsulated in the ancient Greek myth of Narcissus, the beautiful boy who having fallen in love
with his reflection in a pool, pined away and was turned into a flower. Let’s all try not to turn
into flowers.

“Since our technology is really
just an extension of ourselves,
we don’t have to have contempt
for its manipulability in the
way we might with actual
people. It’s all one big endless
loop. We like the mirror and
the mirror likes us. To friend a
person is merely to include the
person in our private hall of
flattering mirrors.”
