For more than a decade
now, Ayo Makun has grown
from being just a comedian
to a top movie producer
and a tycoon of note. This
high-spirited comedian has
dispensed so much
creativity in the Nigerian
industry, and with such
great achievement. We can
proudly make mention of
his most populous live
comedy show; 'Ay Live',
and also his blockbuster
movies:'30 days in Atlanta'
and 'A trip to Jamaica'. It
is obvious that no speed
breaker can stop him from
breaking never explored
boundaries in the Nigerian
entertainment industry. He
talks to us about his family
and journey so far in the
entertainment industry.
Interview by Azuka Ogujiuba
Y Live has become one of the
Abiggest annual shows in the
country and each year it gets
better, what has been your
motivating factor?
I have always been a result driven person.
Organizing good shows and achieving the
desired end result has always been my primary
motivation. As much as I like coming up with
concepts or ideas for most of my shows, I am
also motivated by the collective idea of working
closely with others who share the same goal.
Moreso, I love to take on any challenge and
rise above it.
We heard that your love for
entertainment started in your
university days in Abraka, Delta
State, did you know from the outset
that you were going to go into
entertainment or did you just do it
for fun?
My love for entertainment started in the
university after being crowned as Mr
Corporate on Campus. I went on to setup an
organization known as Corporate World
Entertainment, the official organisers of Delsu
Most Beautiful Girl on Campus pageant, and
Delsu Achievers Merit Awards (DAMA). It
would interest you to know that the same
organization produced two representatives to
Miss World, and another two for Miss
Universe collectively. This was me just having
fun until I met Alibaba who was the host to
one of my events on Campus.
Presently you have two
blockbuster movies and you
recently finished shooting the third
one '10 days in Sun City', what are
we expecting in it?
Having two blockbuster movies has added a
lot of value to my brand as a comedian, actor
and a producer. I think alot of people in the
industry are still trying to understand my
connection in that direction. The truth is that I
am a graduate of Theatre Arts who majored in
directing. "10 Days In Sun City" is another
movie that is going to further expand my
brand. It is a crossover star-studded movie
with the likes of Richard Mofe Damijo, Adesua
Etomi, Mercy Johnson, Falz, Miguel Nunez
from Hollywood, Amanda Dupont and
Thengiwe from South Africa. Also with Guest
appearances from 2Baba and Annie Idibia,
Juliet Ibrahim, Uti Nwanchukwu, Peter of
Psquare and others.
Tell us about your experience
growing up and having to take
care of your siblings after your
parents died?
I had so many experiences growing up. I
played youth football to the point of
representing the then Bendel State. I was
once a Scavenger, Barber, Bus Conductor,
Dry Cleaner and a bartender. My late parents
were my ultimate role models. They were not
the richest of parents, but before they passed
on, they had already positioned me to be
determined in life. Their words, movement
and actions taught me how to believe in
myself, and how to handle responsibilities. All
of that put together was a major influence that
pushed me in the right direction of being there
for my siblings.
Tell us a secret about your
brothers that they won't like to
share?
I am not in position to mention any secrets
about my brothers that they won't like to
share. Rather I will tell you that they look up
to me a whole lot. Before now, my actions
used to form their guide. If AY likes a white
car, so be it for them. If he likes them light
skinned, they are also flashing their yellow
girls.
Who are you closer to, Lanre or
Yomi?
Our
parents
would be
proud
of us
wherever
they are
AY
on
brothers
My brothers and I are like the
Barcelona combinations of Messi,
Neymar and Suarez. we function so
well together, without any display of
who is closer to who.
We heard your dad was a
disciplinarian, tell us about
one of your fun experiences
with him?
Samson Makun was a hardcore
disciplinarian. I dare not stay out past
7pm, any attempt to do that comes
with a penalty laced with some solid
strokes. It would shock you to know
that it was a law I unconsciously
Lanre Makun, CEO of
Lanre Makun Events and
younger brother to
popular comedian, actor,
and director Ayo Makun, is
a man of few words. Well
known for planning and
organizing most comedy
shows in Nigeria, there's
no doubt that he has made
a name for himself in the
Nigerian entertainment
industry. He speaks about
his business, family and
relationship with his
siblings.
How did you venture into events
management?
Interview by Azuka Ogujiuba
I started events management not quite long ago, I
started two years ago but it's something I've been
doing for a very long time. When I was in school, I
was part of the DELSU Most Beautiful Girl
pageant that AY organised. When AY came to
Lagos and started doing comedy, even when we
started the first AY Live in 2007 at Muson center, I
was still part of it. Then I didn't know it was
something I could do on my own but as time went
on, there was a day I just woke up and said, 'do
you know this is something you can actually do,
It's something you have been doing for years, so
it's something you can do for others'. I started
from AY Live and then I did Akpororo vs Akpororo
and that was how I started officially two years
ago.
I AM NOT
THINKING OF
GOING INTO
COMEDY
BUT I CAN
WORK FOR
COMEDIANS
AND THAT’S
WHAT I AM DOING
AY LIVE
REMAINS
MY BIGGEST
EVENT
MANAGEMENT
PROJECT
What's the biggest job you've ever done as an
event manager?
With all due respect, it's my brother's platform but
it's still the biggest. AY Live remains my biggest
event management project. I've done a couple of
events apart from AY Live, but I think that's the
biggest.
Who are you closer to between AY and Yomi?
I'm equally close to the both of them because in
my house, I don't think there's anybody that's
closer to one person than the other person. All of
us relate as one.
Is it a coincidence that you and AY are both
married to light skinned ladies?
I will say it's a coincidence and I will also say it's
not, because when you are dark, you need light
to help the future of your children.
How will you describe AY as an elder brother,
was he a disciplinarian like your dad?
The truth about the matter is, he's like my dad, there
are some things he does that will make me feel like
he's too harsh or that he's taking things too hard.
When I came to Lagos, I saw young children and
adults that talked without respect and I wondered if
these people do not have fathers or mothers that
caution them and teach them how to talk. It was then
I realised that those things that AY did to us, we are
enjoying the benefits now because people are saying
we have so much respect and courtesy. So this is
courtesy of my father and elder brother who showed
us the way to go.
Before events management, was there
something you were doing or had it always been
events management?
Not really, when we lost our dad and mum, we had to
be creative, we had to think of what to do because
the next thing which was hunger, strong one, would
start, so we had to look for our daily bread. Then, I
ventured into photography because I had a friend
who is a photographer and worked in a studio. I was
always with him so I decided to learn photography,
because man needed to hustle to eat. That was also
what my elder brother did when he was on campus
from the outset, so we went into photography
knowing full well that we needed to work to find what
to eat. I started with photography before moving to
Lagos to work with my brother as the head of
production for AY Live before the calling of being an
event manager.
What fond memories do you have of your father?
There are so many memories from my dad, my dad
was a very strict man, he was like an old soldier,
even though he was not a soldier. Seeing my father
coming, you had no choice but to readjust whatever
it was you were doing. I would say the fear of my
father was the beginning of wisdom, not even my
neighbors or even my mother or even his own
mother stood in his way. Everybody adjusted, to
show you how careful he made all of us. I have some
memorable moments with my father, moments of
discipline, moments of him telling you exactly the
way it is. My father was that person that you respect,
your friends respect, your neighbors respect, so I
have many memories. If I were to continue I would
have a lot to say but let's just leave it at - the fear of
my father was the beginning of wisdom.
Just like AY, you are very funny, did you ever
think of being a comedian?
Thinking of going into comedy, na wetin dem wan
take deceive you be that. So many people will be like
'you are very funny, why don't you go into comedy
like your brother, just try it'. Then I will now go on
stage and somebody will now be like, 'who's this idiot
on my stage, how did he get here', they will now bully
me, 'my friend will you leave this stage'. I'll now be
saying, 'but aunty Azuka said I am funny o'. No I
can't go into comedy, I'm doing what I know how to
do best. Comedy is not my thing, the comedy is just
natural from where I grew up which is Warri in Delta
State. If you go to Warri, even an old woman can
make you laugh. If you have not been to Warri
before, just visit Warri, and you will see that even the
bus driver that would carry you, everybody, will make
you laugh. So it's just a natural thing, but if you don't
have that calling, and God has not called you or you
have not called yourself, don't deceive yourself, just
do the one that you understand. Nobody can deceive
me to do comedy, I'm not thinking of going into
comedy but I can work for comedians and that's what
I'm doing.
YOMI CASUAL’S ACCIDENTAL
PLUNGE INTO FASHION
Outfit: Yomi Casual’s Wardrobe
Photography - by Chyder5
How was it like for you growing up as the
youngest of your siblings?
Growing up was very sweet for me because I
am the last child. I got all the support and
everything I needed from my family, they gave
me all that treatment, that last born treatment,
and I enjoyed every bit of it. Growing up was
very sweet with my elder siblings.
Didn't they use to spank you?
Interview by Azuka Ogujiuba
Trust me, they didn't really have the privilege to
spank me, because way back in Delta State,
there was a way last children were being raised
so there's this limit and boundary between me
and my elder ones, there's a limit to what they
could do to me. My mum treated me like gold,
so from AY to the eldest to Lanre, to Bukky, to
Ronke, they didn't really have the privilege to
come close to beating me because I'm the last
child.
How is AY as an elder brother, when you
were much younger and now?
AY had always been a father right from day one.
Even while my parents were still alive, AY was
playing roles of my father, because then
everything was not that rosy so AY was there
right from day one. He tried to make sure that
everyone in the family achieve excellence. We
had a dream and he was there to make sure
that we achieve that dream. He made sure
everybody went to school, at least to an extent,
you just needed to visit the four corners of the
university just to see what it looks like, AY made
sure that that really happened. While I was in
school, he paid my school fees when my
parents were away. All I can say is, he has been
a father, he has been a backbone right from day
one and he's been a supporter of greatness
because he believes so much in his younger
ones. He saw the potentials in all of us and he
made sure we achieved it.
While growing up, did he ever spank you?
Yes offcourse, it was a routine in the family, it
was normal for your elder ones to just come to
you when you mess up and say 'hey Yomi, why
did you do that'. And the only way they have to
remind you way back is to spank you. Now we
say 'hey Junior stop that, stop that', in those
days there was no ' Junior stop that'. The only
way they could remind you is to spank you or
send you out of the house, that was the routine,
and it was normal.
How was Lanre as an elder brother to you?
The funniest thing about me and Lanre is, we
became more close when we moved to Lagos.
Way back it was more like a competition
between me and my elder brother. Whatever he
was doing, I tried to make sure I was ahead of
him, so it was more like a competition. It was
like 'hey this guy, see what he has achieved, I
want to achieve the same thing'. But when we
moved to Lagos, we now realised that we both
have different dreams and goals, so we were
able to settle down. Trust me, Lanre is the
nicest, and sometimes in our house, we'll say
we wish Lanre is the eldest because he's very
calm, he's very understanding and he doesn't
get angry over everything, he knows how to
manage situations, I think Lanre is just cool like
that.
When you say Lanre is nice and that
sometimes you wish he was the eldest, does
it mean that AY was more strict than Lanre?
I wouldn't say AY was very strict, it was more like
I am in a
relationship
and I am
happy,
hopefully
this year
we should
tie the knot
a tradition for your elder ones to be very
strict, because just like your teacher in
school, he wants the best for you that's
why he's strict. It's not like he woke up
from his house one day and say 'oh this
student, I'm going to frustrate you', it's
because he wants the best for you so AY
wanted the best for us, he wanted us to
achieve greatness. In my family, AY was
the first person that started the
entertainment business, AY being strict
was necessary because he has been
able to help us in achieving our goals.
Way back in Delta State, I was an artist, I
paint and sketch, AY realised that he had
a younger brother that had his own
goals, he wants to be a painter and he's
very creative. Lanre on his own was a
photographer and he learnt that from AY,
so AY being strict is him just wanting us
to be something in life. Many times he
will come back home and be like 'Yomi
hold this 10K, hold this 5K, hold this 3K
but that's not enough, AY was able to
push us, to achieve our goals. AY was
the one that forced me to come to Lagos.
After school, when I graduated, AY said, '
Yomi move to Lagos, you have this talent
that people are craving for in Lagos,
people like what you do, move to Lagos'.
I said 'bros, Warri things dey happen oh',
I was working with my Warri lifestyle,
then I had like 10 to 15 thousand in my
account, I was a big boy, I was very ok in
Warri. But AY pushed me, he said 'Yomi
you have to move to Lagos', it became
an issue in the family. That was how I
moved to Lagos, the day I moved to
Lagos, I had an experience, the car
broke down on the road at Ore, I left
Warri around 6am and got to Lagos
around 11pm, to tell you how frustrating it
was. I was like 'can you imagine, God
does not want you to come to Lagos', but
all is history now and I thank God.
Yomi Casual, your fashion brand, will
be 10 years this year, how has the
journey been for you?
I'm so excited that I'll be 10 years this
year, I feels just like yesterday when I
started this and here I am today, people
are celebrating me, this gives me so
much joy, I'm excited. We are 10 years
now already, we plan to have a very big
concert and it's extremely different from
the regular shows we see like Lagos
Fashion Week and the others. I'm
trying to set up an event that's going to
make an impact. On that day, we are
going to have 10 upcoming designers,
put them on the spot to showcase their
designs, and the winner goes home
with a car. Apart from that we will be
showcasing five of our collection, from
the Polo collection to the traditional
wears, to the T-shirt, to the ladies
collection wears. On that day, we will
also be unveiling our kids collection so
it's going to be a very big evening. So
far, so good, we have some sponsors
that are coming in already so it's going
to be a big event at the Federal Palace
Hotel.
Was Fashion Designing your first
choice from the onset?
When I look back at my life, way back
from Delta State, if anyone had told me
that I would be a fashion designer, I'll
have said it's not possible because,
way back to 2003, 2004, you can't
really say you want to be a designer
because your parents will spank the
hell out of you. You can't confidently
say that you want to be a tailor
because nobody celebrated that art.
For me, it was all a mistake, my elder
sister mistakenly filled 'fashion
designing and clothing technology' in
my JAMB form. That was how I found
myself in fashion, it was very
frustrating, trust me I won't even
sugarcoat it that it was nice. The
beginning was very rough, in my class,
there were like 50 girls and just 5 guys
and we were working with just brown
papers and needles. You know how
frustrating that can be, at some point I
said 'what am I doing here, this is not
what I want to be'. It was so bad that
when I go home on holidays and my
friends say 'Yomi I hear say you don
get admission, what are you studying in
school', I will say I'm studying arts, I
won't say I'm studying fashion because
it was very embarrassing. But I thank
God because of where I am today.
Fashion has become something you
can brag about, I thank God for the
likes of Mudi, Dacover, they created
that platform for us and I was also able
to rebrand the fashion industry. Now we
have a lot of youths that boldly say they
want to be fashion designers after
school, some of them even have
Masters degree. This is because the
likes of us have been able to create an
impact in the fashion industry and they
respect us so much. I keep telling
everybody that you can have that same
respect that's given to Doctors and
Lawyers and you can even get more.
I've been in an event where there were
different professors and they were
making recognitions and my name was
mentioned first. I said to myself 'look at
this small tailor'. So, fashion is now a
real business, it's a real profession one
can embrace.
It has always been David Beckham, I love
that guys so much, brotherly love though, not
that 'kind' of love. I like his style, and he's one
celebrity that has been able to make an
impact in the world. He retired years ago, yet
till now he's still getting endorsements, that's
means he's still impactful in several ways. He
doesn't really have anything going on right
now, yet there are so many brands coming in
to endorse him. I am not so sure of what
those brands saw in him, but what I see is
greatness. I know with David Beckham, I can
achieve so much greatness and impact in the
world, so I can't wait to clothe him.
We know you are in a relationship, when
will you be walking down the aisle?
Yes I'm in a relationship and I'm very happy.
Hopefully this year we should tie the knot, we
should walk down the aisle. It gives me so
much joy and satisfaction that I'm going to
end up with her because she represents
everything I want. I've never been married but
I know so much on marriage based on the
things I've seen so far. My friends are married
and I've been able to grab one or two things
from their marriage. My girlfriend makes me
happy and that's the number one thing in a
marriage. I'm in no position to tell anyone
about marriage but this is what I feel: if you
want to get married, get married to someone
that makes you happy. My girlfriend makes
me happy, she also makes me sad as well
but that's two things. It's a different thing if a
girl just makes you sad, when all you can
think about her is just sad things. My girl
makes me happy and sad and I've been able
to combine both together. I'm not really all
about just getting married because this girl is
pretty or because she has a good physique
that can drive you crazy, but I'm doing so
because she's homely, she's respectful, she's
gracious, she's beautiful, she's warm, and
she's that proper definition of a 21st century
wife.
I heard your dad was a disciplinarian and
also a loving father, what fun memories do
you have of him?
I have alot to say about my dad. He's the best
dad in the whole world and I'm not just saying
this because he's my dad. I've learnt alot from
him as a man, I and my siblings all have a lot
to say about my dad. He was a very strict
man, and he was strict for a good cause. I do
not keep late nights, when I'm out, once it's
12am, something just tells me ' Yomi it's 12,
you need to start going home'. My dad is not
here, I lost him when I was 13 and now I'm 32
but till this moment I still feel my dad is
waiting at home with a cane to beat the hell
out of me. So I've been able to control myself
when I'm out, even when I'm with my friends,
when I'm talking or when I'm drinking, or even
with my staffs, they say I'm too uptight, that I
try to make everything intact, I'm that kind of
guy. I'm uptight, I'm extremely neat and I
learnt that from my dad. My dad irons his
underwear after washing it, he makes sure
that everything is properly ironed, from the
curtains to the bedspreads so I learnt all of
that from him. My girl knows this, when she
came to my house, everything was intact and
she said 'do we still have men like this'. I
learnt all of these qualities from my dad, may
his soul rest in peace.
JACK THE RIPPER
MEN THAT ROCKS RIPPED DENIM JEANS
Story by Oluwatobi Ogidiolu
WWW.MEDIAROOMHUB.COM
For every adventurous stylish men, ripped
clothing is no doubt a daring way of
making a bold statement. It is a trend that
has sustained itself in the fashion purview. Tot
up numbers of years, ripped jeans has
considerably been in vogue from the 80's to 90's
and also moving down to the Y2K ladder (ripped
jeans are the hot new denim trend now because
of their fashionable elegance and
sophistication). Most men uses hot styled
ripped jeans to expresses their poise and
deportment while some do it with a conscious
choice, this which is contrary to the belief that
only the poor wear ripped clothes. If you want to
have a new feel of your ripped denim style, rock
it with a distressed effect T-shirt, you will have
your urbanity mode on. Of all the craziest things
we do for fashion, paying handsomely for holes
in our denims can actually top the list of fashion
for decades to come.
INTERVIEW
CONCIERGE
...blogging is not just a hobby,
this has become a full time job.
Lifestyle blogger and popular YouTuber, Yemisi Odusanya,
known by all as Sisi Yemmie is a young woman that has
been a source of inspiration to many bloggers in Nigeria.
From relocating to Nigeria, to quitting her job to focus on
blogging full time, Sisi Yemmie has shown that hardwork
and determination pays on the long run. The mother of one
talks to Mediaroomhub about blogging, marriage and
motherhood.
How did you come about the
name 'Sisi Yemmie'?
My husband and I were thinking
of a nickname that would
resonate with Nigerians and
would describe me, we
brainstormed and agreed that
SISI was symbolic for a
young/trendy lady and I just
added 'YEMMIE' to specify which
SISI.
Before you started
sisiyemmie.com, what were
you doing?
I was a postgraduate student in
the UK. I was studying for my
Masters at The University of
Birmingham, so blogging was a
hobby that I started then, just for
fun.
How did you create the 'Sisi
Yemmie' brand?
Initially it didn't start as
SISIYEMMIE, it was
GISTDOTCOM and all I did then
was share funny stories of my
experiences, after a while I saw
the need to expand my niche, I
wanted to create more content.
So in 2013/2014 I changed my
blog name to SISIYEMMIE
because it was easier to explain
that SISIYEMMIE was everything
that I was. That was how the
SISIYEMMIE brand started, as
time goes by I tweak the brand to
suit what phase of life I'm in.
How have you been able to
carve a special niche for
yourself in the Nigerian
blogging industry?
I have, I believe I have carved a
lifestyle niche for myself. I have
many interests; food,
relationships, career, beauty,
family and more, so it made
sense to bring it all together
since I could not choose one.
Right now I'm tilting towards food
& recipes, everything else comes
after.
How has marriage and
motherhood come to play in
the contents of your vlogs?
It is inevitable that marriage and
motherhood would be involved.
Many people discovered my
brand when my husband and I
won "My Big Nigerian Wedding"
in 2013, so we had followers
from the publicity. This spilled
over when I got pregnant and
became a mom. The transition
was seamless and I have found
an effective way of carrying my
family along in my vlog because,
a lot of my experience which I
share come from my family, all
the recipes have been tasted
and approved by the hubby
before they get published.
We see alot of cooking in your
vlogs, have you always loved
cooking as a person?
It is interesting that I do not
really "enjoy" cooking, I LOVE
eating good food and I realised
early that to eat good food every
time you need to know how to
cook what will satisfy your
craving. This is why I started
sharing my recipes. If I loved
cooking so much, perhaps I
would be a caterer by now.
How have you been able to
juggle marriage, motherhood
and blogging since you are
basically the only one that
creates content for your blog?
It is not easy to strike a balance.
I take things one day at a time.
My husband is understanding
and supportive of what I do,
which is the most important
factor. So when we both need to
compromise, we do.
What was the turning point for
you as a blogger in terms of
cash flow?
A: That was in 2014 when I was
the online ambassador for
MAGGI Nigeria. I sent out my
first big invoice (I was afraid
while sending it), and I was
surprised to get my first big pay
check. In that moment I realised,
blogging is not just a hobby, this
can become a full time job!
I believe the
blogging industry
needs to be more
professional in
their approach. I
get a lot of
feedbacks when I
tell people that I
am a blogger; they
would immediately
assume I was an
entertainment/goss
ip blogger because
that is all most of
them know and
that is what a lot of
Nigerian bloggers
do
WWW.MEDIAROOMHUB.COM
If you were not blogging,
what will you be doing?
have asked myself about this
so many times, and I still have
no clue what I will be doing. I
studied Mass Communication
and International Diplomacy,
perhaps I would have been
working in a field relating to
what I studied. At some point I
considered doing HR, but that
was a long time ago.
What are the challenges
you've faced as a blogger?
My challenges are mostly
environmental and technical
issues. I'm a self-taught
videographer and
photographer so it is
expensive to get quality
equipment. With vlogging, I get
a lot of generator noise that
make my videos quite noisy,
but I am about to sort that out.
Also I struggle sometimes with
uploading my content because
of slow internet when I live. All
these challenges I will
overcome in a short while.
What do you think of the
Nigerian blogging industry
and what advice do you
have for young bloggers?
I have been blogging for
almost 7 years and I only
began blogging full time in
2015. I have experienced a lot
of evolution in the industry,
from not making money to
seeing how profitable blogging
can be. I believe the blogging
industry needs to be more
professional in their approach.
I get a lot of feedbacks when I
tell people that I am a blogger;
they would immediately
assume I was an
entertainment/gossip blogger
because that is all most of
them know and that is what a
lot of Nigerian bloggers do. We
need more bloggers in other
niches: tech, beauty, faith, and
more. Nigerian bloggers need
to understand that there is
more to explore in the world of
blogging and we have not
even scratched the surface.
Story by Olalekan Adeola
i had just made it halfway down
a quiet street in Lekki when
something caught my eyes. A
Mercedes C300 stood few
blocks away. I moved closer as
it beckoned. A mischievous
smile creeps through the
corner of my lips as I peeped
through the glass. How lucky
could I get? I sighted the car
key firmly seated in the ignition.
"What a careless owner, it's my
lucky day. This would be my
easiest car theft ever." I thought
to myself.
I took a quick glance around to
be sure no one was in sight. I
hopped into the car and started
the engine. Almost as the
engine came alive, the car
audio system turned up
automatically. "Hello Marcus, I
see you have arrived. Check
the brown envelope on the
back seat for the location of
your next target. I am
mornitoring your every move",
the thick male voice said.
Before I could find my voice the
audio system turned off.
For a moment it felt like I just
woke up from a nightmare. I
turned to the back seat, reached
out for the brown envelope
placed beside a briefcase. The
content of the envelope was a
picture of a middle-aged innocent
looking lady. On the other side of
the picture was written "Gloria
Adams". I dragged the suitcase
closer and opened. Fear gripped
me to the bones as I saw a well
arranged set of pistol and
silencer.
With the speed of 'bolt', I dashed
out of the vehicle without even
turning o ffthe engine. That
afternoon I made my fastest run
ever. Into one corner I veered,
then I stopped behind a fence to
take time out to breath. I
wondered who the lady was and
why they wanted her dead. I
opened the Facebook app on my
phone to search for her name.
Luckily I found a profile with the
picture matching the one I saw.
Dropping a message was a
waste of time because her last
post was about 4 months ago. I
found her phone number from
the 'about' section and dialed.
The calls were connecting, but
she wasn't picking up. I peeped
from behind the fence and the
car was gone. My heart skipped
a beat. Again and again I dialed.
UBA CEO AWARDS 2017
AN ENCHANTING NIGHT
Story by Seyi Akindunbi
Eko Hotel and Suites was filled with different
dignitaries and personalities on the 8th of April
2017. Staffs, customers and friends of Africa’s
global bank walked onto a well laid red carpet,
ushering them into what turned out to be an
unforgettable and interesting evening. It is a
special evening with the sole purpose of
celebrating the bank’s staff that have
performed exceptionally in the outgoing
financial year. It is a tradition that the bank has
maintained since 2008 and this was the ninth
edition since its inception.
As usual, it lived up to its reputation as a night of
glamour and glitz as bankers partied and
celebrated with colleagues that were awarded
event which was tagged ‘The Journey’ was
aimed at celebrating UBA’s rich history as one
of the biggest and dominant banks through the
ages from its inception in 1949. Ace compere,
governors present at the event as well as the
Senate President gave Mohammed $5000,
$10,000 and N5m respectively bringing the
total to about N11m. Ekweremadu also
Foundation. He's an entrepreneur, economist, and
philanthropist. His foundation is dedicated to the
advancement of business leadership and entrepreneurship
across Africa.
His foundation has aided the development of the African
economy with programmes like: 'The Tony Elumelu
Entrepreneurship Programme' (TEEP), 'Tony and Awele
Elumelu Prize', 'Africapitalism Institute', and 'The Elumelu
Nigerian Empowerment Fund'. Each program in one way or
the other has helped fund a business, empower
entrepreneurs, encourage a youth, and sustain a
community.
Tony Elumelu also organises an annual awards called 'UBA
CEO Awards' where UBA staffs all over the world are
appreciated for their hardwork.
Tony Elumelu is indeed a visionary leader, a pacesetter and
a role model to African youths.
The Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (“TEEP”)
is the flagship entrepreneurship programme of the
Foundation with the purpose of identifying, over a period of
10 years, 10,000 African startups and entrepreneurs with
ideas that have the potential to succeed; support the growth
of these businesses through business training, mentoring,
access to seed capital funding, information and
membership of their respective founders and/or owners
(entrepreneurs), into the TEEP Africa-wide alumni network
and; to create businesses that can generate at least
1,000,000 new jobs and contribute at least $10 billion in
new revenues across Africa over the next 10 years. This
shall be achieved through the selection of 1,000 businesses
annually to participate in a holistic 12 month programme;
The Entrepreneurship foundation has been able to train
2000 already and are already on their way to training and
empowering the next 1000. It is of note that all
entrepreneurs spread across all countries of the continent
According to Dr Etiobhio Samuel Osemudiamen, who
studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Benin
“Tony Elumelu is the most fore sighted billionaire in Africa.
He's fertilising embryos today which would become well
formed fetuses at the time of delivery. The
Entrepreneurship platform is one of the most organized I've
seen. The mentors provided are world class from various
countries of the world and the vigorous master classes, you
can't get it else well. I think Other multi billion companies
and individuals should key into this vision and lift Africa to
the citadel of greatness and relevance through the
empowerment of aspiring entrepreneurs”
He is also a beneficiary of Tony Elumelu entrepreneurship
programme. Dr Etiobhio is also a painter.
BIGBROTHER NAIJA
Martin Mabutho
General Manager, Sales & Marketing
Story by Azuka Ogujiuba
agos, Nigeria; 9 April, 2017: After 11 weeks of
Lintrigues, tension, suspense, and a fiercely
contested competition, Efe has emerged winner of
the Big Brother Naija reality TV show, beating 11 other
contenders.
Having surmounted all the hurdles and polled a
whopping 57.61% of the overall votes, Efe has become a
proud winner of N25m and an SUV courtesy MultiChoice
Nigeria.
The show, which lasted 11 weeks, was aimed at
identifying, nurturing, and promoting young talent to a
wide range of viewers which cut across the African
continent. After a 10 year hiatus, the show was
repackaged to give more Nigerian youth the opportunity
to showcase their talent to the world. The year's edition
was hosted by former Big Brother Nigeria housemate,
Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.
Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria John Ugbe,
speaking on the show's finale said: "We are particularly
excited about the fresh talent the Big Brother Naija
platform has birthed. The buzz generated by the show
has demonstrated its success as a platform that seeks to
create stars and promote the spirit of entrepreneurship of
the Nigerian youth."
"We commend all the housemates for their excellent
showing, endurance and determination." Citing the fame
and fortune that the BBNaija platform provides, Ugbe
further urged all the housemates to take a cue from the
positive examples of past housemates such as Ebuka
Obi-Uchendu, Gideon Okeke, Katung Aduwak among
others, in carving a niche for themselves in Nigeria's
evolving entertainment industry.
Debie-Rise emerged the third runner up, TBoss the
second runner up and Bisola the first runner up.
There were other wins for the night. TBoss won the least
time in all Payporte games, while Bisola carted away the
prize for having the best ONE campaign presentation for
the education of the girl-child. TBoss was presented with
a N500, 000 cheque and Bisola will join the ONE
Campaign team in New York City for the girl-child
education at the United Nations.
The grand finale was quite exciting as the live audience
and viewers were treated to music from two of Nigeria's
biggest music stars: 2Baba and Tiwa Savage who
performed her latest single “All Over”.
Eyo Bassey one of the
CEOs in Nigeria. In his late thirties, Bassey has indeed built a brand and
organization, having offices in China, UK, United States etc.
Payporte was the headline sponsor of the just concluded Big Brother Naija
show. The show which started on the 22nd of January 2017 and ended on the
9th of April 2017 was the most talked about show during the three month
period it lasted and Payporte was at the center of everything.
Payporte was intrinsically involved with Big Brother Naija and this was
obvious in some of the activities that went on in the house. For example,
housemates were given outfits by Payporte for their parties on Saturdays,
also Payporte organized the Friday Night Games and gave shopping
vouchers to some housemates that won the game.
Before the show was concluded, Payporte also made two of the already
evicted housemates (Uriel and Soma) ambassadors; Uriel models the plus
size female clothing while Soma models the male clothing.
Payporte was a huge part of the success that the Big Brother Naija season
two was. They shined the light on the show and inadvertently shined the light
on the brand.
Payporte also sponsored the Olori Wuraola 'Give Back Concert' which held in
March. 'AY Live', one of the biggest annual comedy shows in Nigeria is also
sponsored this year by Payporte. Kudos to Eyo Bassey for being innovative
and for being supportive of the Nigerian entertainment industry. We also
heard that Mr Eyo Bassey has plan to build a Big Brother Naija House in
Nigeria in the nearest future.
TOURISM DIARY
#MySAExperience:
Liz Osho
Days in South Africa's Western Cape
8Province - From Harley Davidson rides,
Helicopter rides, taking walks with real
life Elephants and so much more.
South African Tourism West Africa welcomed
top celebrities on an 8 day tour to South Africa
to explore the beautiful sceneries and rich
culture of the country. The fun-filled, eight-day
experience focused on the Western Cape
Province. From helicopter rides to elephant
rides, the trip was indeed activity filled and
memorable.
The guests that were taken on the trip, this
time around, included Richard Mofe Damijo,
John Dumelo, Francis Doku, Seyi Shay, Arese
Ugwu, Bolanle Olukanni and Idia Aisien.
The journey began with the South African
Airways flight which the Nigerian and
Ghanaian group boarded from Lagos and
Accra respectively. The flight which lasted only
6 hours was smooth and comfortable so that
by the time the guests landed in from O.R.
Tambo International airport. From the airport
they took a short 15 mins ride on the Gautrain
where they enjoyed breakfast and the finest
hospitality at the Maslow hotel, Santon.
Refreshed and ready to take on the adventure,
they returned to Johannesbury Airprt to board
their connecting 1hr45mins flight to George
situated in the Western Cape Province of
South Africa.
Upon arrival, their activity filled week began.
Guests received the 5 Star experience at the
Simpola Golf and Country estate, a rare
natural beauty (whom by the way have a world
class Spa which the guests enjoyed) The first
activity in Knysna was at the Bergsig Game
farm where the guests boarded helicopters
and went on private helicopter rides where
they got to see a panoramic view of the
beautiful city. From an altitude of over 8000ft
over sea level, the guests were able to
view the greenery, mountains and
animals.
Next up, the guests got to visit the Nyaru
game lodge situated in the heart of
garden route a mere, 30 minute drive
from the George airport. The Nyaru
game lodge provides a traditional
restaurant that comes complete with a
fireplace. The crew got the opportunity of
enjoying the authentic African bush
breakfast on the outdoor deck against
nature's very own picturesque backdrop.
Knysna is the perfect spot to truly get
away from it all
The next day, the group went on a visit to
a small town called Knysna located along
South Africa's famed garden route. The
town is most famous for its oyster festival,
warm people and the most magnificent
views from Leisure Isle to the Knysna
Heads. The guests' first activity on arrival
involved a power boat ride through the
Knysna heads and down the Knsyna
estuary! The Knysna waters are cool and
clean making it a safe spot for speed
boating.
On their last day in the beautiful city of
George, the guests visited the Elephant
Sanctuary located at Crags, Plettenberg
Bay! The guests enjoyed a very intimate
experience with the elephants as they
rode the elephants taking in the view
once again at an extended height. This
time around, at the height of over 3,3m
Arese Ugwu
Kola Olasushi & sheyi Shay
Richard Mofe-Damijo
which is the height of an average
African elephant. Some of the
guests also went on walks with the
elephants leading them by their
trunks.
On their last night in George, the
guests were treated to dinner on a
boat cruise where they set sail on
the calm Knysna Lagoon.
Champagne, cocktails mixed with
seafood and yummy cuisine was
the order of the day as they looked
forward to what would be a new
adventure in the city of Capetown
the next day.
The anticipation for what was to
come was built on the 50mins flight
to Capetown from George and the
guests looked on in anticipation to
what Cape Town had to offer. The
first activity the guests embarked
upon was to explore Robben Island
which they visited by boat! Guests
got the opportunity to intimately
experience a segment in the life of
one of Africa's biggest legends and
Nobel Peace prize Laureate,
Nelson Mandela. They got the
privilege of being inside what was
his prison cell for 18 of his 21year
sentence. They got to see the tally
marks he made inside the cell as
that was his way of keeping record
of his time in prison. He counted
the days stroke by stroke for all his
18 years of imprisonment in the
cell.
Outside the cell, they were
introduced to the limestone quarry
where Mandela and the other cell
mates had to break cement
manually with sledge hammers
every day for the duration of his
imprisonment. It was a bitter sweet
moment as the guests gained
increased respect and admiration
for the African Icon.
Vroom vroom! It was adventure
time once more for the crew. In
grand style, they rode on Harley
Davidson bikes from Signal Hill to
the wine lands located in Groot
constantia Landgoed estate. Here,
they were introduced to the process
of Wine making. Founded in 1685,
It Groot Constantia is one of South
Africa's oldest wine farms and a
part of Cape Town's big 7 top
attractions! Here, the guests
enjoyed the offerings of history,
culture and of course, the unique
blend of centuries old, ultrapremium
cool climate wines.
No visit to Capetown is complete
without a visit to the iconic
landmark which also serves as one
of the World's seven wonders. If
you guessed Table Mountain, you
certainly guessed right. Sitting at a
height of over 3,653ft, the guests
were treated to cable rides to the
top of mountain as they watched on
in amazement at the breath taking view of
the entire city of Capetown! From the
infinitely laid green landscape to the
vineyards and surrounding mountains and
hill tops the guests were held spell-bound.
The 2-day Cape Town Jazz Festival was in
session while the guests were in the
mother city of Cape Town so they got the
privilege of attending the festival. This
festival plays host to thousands of Jazz
lovers across the globe every year with
world class acts performing on stage. The
smooth rhythm and blues from renowned
acts such as Nomfundo Xaluva, Mango
groove, Digable planets, Andra day,
Camillo Lombard and a host of many more
ended their last night in the Western Cape
Province.
No one gets tried of cruises, the group
managed to add in another water
adventure with a relaxing cruise. Sweet
dreams are made of these: sun, food,
good music, good vibes, relaxation!
It was a bitter-sweet exit as the guests
ended their tour knowing that this was only
the beginning of more adventures to come.
From family visits to bringing friends and
spouses, they all vowed to return with their
loved ones as there are so many more
activities available in the beautiful country.
The accessibility and affordability that
South Africa presents also helped seal the
deal!
