message from the
board chair
As my year as Chair of the Board of Directors of the United
Way, serving Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington
comes to a close I look back and reflect on how fortunate I
am to be able to volunteer with such a wonderful organization
as our United Way.
As a community we celebrated a fourth consecutive
successful campaign, this one pushing us over the 2 million-dollar
mark in contributions. What an incredible milestone!
On behalf of the board of directors, sincere thanks to Glen
Wood and his cabinet, the many community volunteers, our
tireless United Way staff, as well as all our contributors.
Our increased campaign revenues translated to many existing
agencies receiving much needed additional funding, and
the introduction of several new member agencies under the
United Way umbrella. Way to Go, Kingston!
As a board, we also supported two exciting new initiatives
that strengthen our commitment to community capacity
building. Success By 6 supports services for children from
birth to age six, their parents and caregivers. 211 is the
new 3 digit phone number that will connect community residents
with government and social services.
It has been an honour and a privilege to chair the Board
through this past year and I look forward to a continued
relationship in the years to come. There is nothing more
worthwhile than volunteering and more so when one is
associated with an organization that is so successful in its
commitment to enhancing the organized capacity of our
community to care for one another.
message from the
president
Working for the United Way in KFL&A is both a privilege and a
huge responsibility. It's a privilege because I get to work with the
most amazing team of volunteers and staff, knowing that we make
a difference every day of the year. It's a huge responsibility
because the mission of the United Way is such an extensive one -
helping to build the capacity of a community. We do this through
fundraising, community building and supporting the voluntary sector
in many ways.
The United Way continues to grow. This year, we raised over 2
million dollars, a significant milestone in our community's history.
Thanks to a caring and generous community, we have seen significant
growth, a 38% increase over a four-year period. Glen Wood,
2002 Campaign Chair, and his team of community volunteers
cheerfully took our campaign to its highest level yet.
We are fortunate, in this community, to have a dedicated group of
volunteers who put in many hours reviewing our funding applications.
They invest time and emotion to make recommendations
that will strengthen our network of services.
As our community's needs change, our United Way has responded.
We’ve expanded our support to include agencies that provide critical
services to the homeless, youth in crisis, the hungry, those in
need and many people who occasionally need a hand up.
In 2002, we started working on Success By 6, a United Way initiative
that supports services for children 0-6 years, their parents and
caregivers. As we all know, anything we can do to facilitate early
development will benefit our community in the future.
We will also be working this year on 211 - providing an easy to
recall 3 digit number with trained referral agents, who will connect
community residents with government and social services.
I'd like to thank our Board Chair, Valerie Mallen, our Board of
Directors for their leadership, our campaign and allocations volunteers
for their enthusiasm and commitment, our community agencies
for their hard work and dedication and, last but not least, our
tireless overworked staff who are an inspiration to me. Thank you!
message from the
2002 campaign
cabinet chair
The 2002 Campaign was a resounding success! The
$2,030,000 donated will sustain and grow the many
programs so necessary to our community.
There are many reasons for our achievement:
A wonderful cabinet - "the dream team"
Five loaned representatives
An experienced, energetic, committed staff
Enthusiastic, engaged, supported volunteers
Full support of organizations and media
A caring community
We built on the success of the campaigns that went
before us - the leadership, the positive energy, the
growth in every category. We engaged the expertise
of other communities. We made a plan and we executed!
I am honoured to have been associated with this wonderful
group of people, who together, delivered such
remarkable results. I am proud of their contribution to
our community and I truly believe we have grown the
platform for future successes.
Thank you Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and
message from the
treasurer
It has been a banner year for the United Way and it has
been a pleasure serving as treasurer with such a dynamic
and enthusiastic team of staff and volunteers. Our results
this year are tangible evidence of that enthusiasm.
We again have made great progress not only in Campaign
results but getting more of these dollars to work in the community.
While we are marginally in excess of our budgeted
expenses, the board made conscious decisions to provide
seed money to increase capacity in the community through a
number of new initiatives, such as 211 and Success By 6. To
this end we utilized a small portion of our contingency to
fund these worthwhile programs.
Great care is taken for financial planning and following up to
reduce pledge loss; so that all pledges made that are available
for collection get collected.
We have been able to increase allocations yet again this year
to member and non-member agencies while still maintaining
a strong operation with as little expense as possible.
Thanks to the staff, volunteers and a very caring community
for an outstanding year and we look forward to another successful
year in 2003.
Success By 6
of KFL&A
Success By 6 is a United Way co-ordinated initiative
dedicated to giving children ages 0-6 the foundation
they need to get a good start in life. It recognizes the
importance of taking care of young children and making
them a priority.
The Success By 6 Council of Partners and Committees
include representatives from private businesses, government,
religious groups, educators, neighbours and
parents. Together, these community representatives
are combining resources and developing key strategies
to invest in our children.
Recent brain research proves what we have known all
along: that every child needs a safe, nurturing environment
filled with stimulation and interaction to grow
into a confident and productive adult.
We know that when children receive the right nutrition,
nurturing and care in the first six years, the results can
be tremendous. As they grow into healthy teens and
adults, they are less likely to drop out of school, use
drugs, have health problems or become involved in
crime. $1 invested early in prevention programs will
save our community $6-7 in intervention programs.
Success By 6 brings together the people who care
about children the most. It’s a team effort that’s
important to our community’s health, an excellent
long-term investment in our future and a way to contribute
to the development of a child.
Together, we can help all children
succeed for life.
message from
labour
The Kingston District Labour Council congratulates Glen Wood,
his many volunteers and the staff of The United Way on this
year's successful campaign. We feel that Glen has truly earned
his title of "The Two Million Dollar Man". Special thanks go to
our Labour Liaison on the cabinet Bruce Elder.
Labour programs have been implemented again with the addition
to the United Way Staff of a new Labour Staff
Representative. Darlene Medhurst was hired last May and has
been working hard on updating union contacts throughout our
area, working on her first campaign, recruiting labour volunteers
for committees and starting the Union Counselling
Program. Darlene has been a long time union activist in CUPE
(Canadian Union of Public Employees) and comes to us with a
lot of knowledge and experience. As a result of her work the
Union donations for the last campaign increased substantially
and she tells me that she has even greater plans for this year.
The Labour and Community Services Committee has met at
regular intervals all year planning strategies for the campaign
and giving support to the cabinet and staff.
I want to mention that Glen, Darlene and myself completed a
tour of all 31 United Way agencies which was a very rewarding
experience. I encourage everyone, if they have a chance, to
visit an agency and see firsthand the great work that is being
done in our community with your United Way dollars.
In closing, I want to say the labour community is looking forward
to this years campaign and I know that together we can
make it a success.
