Message from the Chair
December, 2008
The SCU accounting department continues to grow and improve the
quality of its programs. This past June, we graduated 148 Accounting
majors and our first Accounting and Information Systems major. This
was the largest Accounting Department graduating class in the history
of Santa Clara University. We are now the third largest major in the
entire University. In addition, our Certificate of Advanced Accounting
Proficiency (CAAP) program granted approximately 100 certificates of
completion (see page 4).
To help the department with our increasing enrollments, we were very
fortunate to be able to hire two new, tenure-track faculty, Haidan Li
Jim Sepe
and Siqi Li. These new faculty are featured on page 2. The Ph.D. market
in accounting is extremely tight with demand significantly outpacing supply. The hiring of two
highly qualified individuals in one year in this market is a testament to the quality of our program.
Our Accounting Department Advisory Board continues to provide critical counsel to the department
(see page 8). Board members provide us with advice on curriculum and other matters affecting
our department and our students and they also help us with fund raising. In appreciation of
all that the Board has done for us, in October of 2008, we celebrated the 20-year anniversary of
the Board with a reception and dinner for all current and past Advisory Board members. The
event was held in the lobby of our brand new business school building, Lucas Hall. Board members
were given tours of both the new building and the new University Library. If any of you
would like to tour either of these facilities, give me a call and I would be happy to show you
around. Lucas Hall, a state-of-the-art facility, certainly improves the quality of education we provide
to our students (see page 6).
I would like to acknowledge the excellent work of Mike Calegari during his four-year tenure as
chair of the department. Mike did a great job. The typical length of service of a department chair
is three years, but Mike did such a terrific job that he was asked to serve an additional year. Sabbatical
leaves and other faculty commitments created a one-year gap in the chairmanship of the
department and I agreed to step in for the year. Susan Parker will begin her three-year tour of
duty beginning in the fall of 2009.
One of Mike’s many contributions was an overhaul and update to our department’s website. Everything
you want to know about our department and its programs can be found at http://
www.scu.edu/business/accounting.
In closing, I would like to thank all of you who contribute your time and financial support to our
program. This support is critical to our ability to attract and keep high quality faculty. For our
alums, you have reason to be proud of your alma mater. The SCU accounting program is commonly
regarded as one of the top three in the State of California and is one of only five programs
in the State accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Two New Faculty Join the Accounting Department
The Accounting Department is pleased to welcome two new faculty members,
Haidan Li and Siqi Li.
THE ACCOUNTANT
Haidan received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.
She also has an M.A. in Economics from Rutgers and a B.S. in Economics
from Zhongshan University. Haidan worked as an auditor for
Lee Seng Chan & Co. in Singapore. She joins the accounting department
from the University of Iowa, where she taught for five
years. Her primary teaching interest is financial accounting, and she
began her career at SCU by teaching Accounting 11, the introductory
undergraduate financial accounting course. She is pleased to be teaching
small classes that allow for greater student involvement and participation.
Haidan’s research interests lie in financial accounting and reporting, corporate governance and
stock-based compensation. Her work has been published in Contemporary Accounting Research,
the Journal of Law and Economics and Review of Accounting Studies.
Haidan (whose name means the sea and the sun) and her husband Ying Shi have two daughters,
Julie (27 months) and Lily (6 months). In their spare time, Haidan and Ying enjoy spending
time with their children, swimming, biking, and traveling. Haidan and Ying were attracted
to the culture and diversity in the Silicon Valley and are pleased to leave Iowa and it’s brutal
winters behind. The Silicon Valley is also a good place for Ying to pursue his career in the
semiconductor industry.
Siqi Li recently completed her doctoral work at the University of
Southern California. She also holds degrees from the University of
California at San Diego’s Graduate School of International Relations
and Beijing’s Central University of Finance and Economics.
Her research interests include accounting information in global
capital markets, corporate governance and financial disclosure.
Siqi’s work has been published in the Review of Quantitative Finance
and Accounting. She has also co-written a student case that
is included in the INSEAD Case Series.
Siqi’s husband, Peng Wang, is a corporate attorney with Wilson,
Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati in Palo Alto. Peng is a graduate of the Law School of Washington
University at St. Louis. Siqi and Peng met as classmates at the University of California at
San Diego and married in 2005.
In their spare time, Siqi and Peng enjoy playing poker and tennis, as well as something called
the Mafia Game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_(party_game)). The Mafia game involves
role playing, psychology, and agency theory. She plans to introduce the game to the accounting
department at its next party. Siqi was attracted to SCU because of the beautiful campus,
positive research and teaching environment, and supportive faculty.
You may be wondering if Haidan and Siqi are related – Li is one of the most common surnames
in China, and they just happen to share it.
O. Robert Anderson Award Recipient
Lauren Russi
Class of 2008
The Professor O. Robert Anderson Award was established
in 1973 to fund an accounting award given annually
to the accounting major judged outstanding in scholarship,
leadership, and service by the faculty of the department. It
is the most prestigious award for accounting students at
SCU. The 2008 recipient of the Professor O. Robert
Anderson Award is Lauren Russi.
Lauren grew up in Lafayette, California, in a family atmosphere
that mixed sports and accounting. Her grandfather,
Jim Russi (SCU Class of 1960), was an All-American
basketball player at SCU who was drafted by the St Louis
Hawks to play in the NBA. Instead, he decided to join the
accounting firm of Kasch, Lautze & Lautze because he felt that he would be better off
becoming a CPA. Jim went on to have a successful career as an entrepreneur and was later
elected to the SCU Sports Hall of Fame. Lauren’s father, Jack Russi, was an All-
American basketball player at Bishop O’Dowd whose career ended with a knee injury at
UC Berkeley. Jack also majored in accounting.
Lauren played basketball throughout her youth, eventually becoming the team captain of
the Carondelet High School Basketball team that won the California State Basketball
championship in 2004. During these years, she often attended basketball camps designed
primarily for boys. Her frustration with these camps led her to create a basketball camp
exclusively for young girls. In her sophomore year at Carondelet, Lauren and her younger
sister organized the “Bay Area Skill and Drill Basketball Camp” for girls in junior high
school. The camp was an immediate success and Lauren scheduled several sessions during
the summer and holidays when she was not attending school. Over time, the two sisters
were able to donate over $10,000 to the West Diablo CYO from net proceeds generated
by the camp.
Lauren decided to switch some of her attention to accounting after working as an intern
for several years at Armanino McKenna in San Ramon. Her academic record at SCU was
exemplary. She graduated summa cum laude in 2008 with a cumulative GPA of 3.97.
During the summer of 2007, Lauren interned at Ernst & Young in Palo Alto and after
graduation she joined E & Y on a full-time basis.
There are many outstanding students at Santa Clara University. The professors selected
Lauren as the standout accounting student both for her academic achievement, positive
spirit, and the leadership, marketing, and management skills she displayed in her development
of the basketball camp. Lauren intends to continue coaching basketball and will continue
to be a role model for young athletes who wish to make a difference in the community.
THE ACCOUNTANT
Growing Demand for the CAAP Program
In today’s economy, many individuals currently in the workforce are seeking either a career change or career enhancement
by obtaining knowledge in the accounting area. The Certificate in Advanced Accounting Proficiency (CAAP) Program at
Santa Clara University continues to attract students interested in improving their accounting knowledge, completing the unit
requirements to sit for the CPA exam, or facilitating a shift in careers. The program has become a superior alternative continuing
education program that meets this growing demand. Students must have earned a bachelor’s degree before applying
to the program.
The CAAP program provides accounting knowledge equivalent to the knowledge gained by our undergraduate accounting
majors in their junior and senior years. We now offer two intensive formats for obtaining this knowledge. The Summer
CAAP program is an accelerated eleven-week program that begins in June and ends in late August. Students attend classes
each weekday for four hours. Classes are not offered on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays. Students can attend either a morning
session (9:30am – 1:30 pm) or an afternoon session (3:30pm - 7:30pm). In our academic year program, students attend
classes on Saturdays beginning in October and ending in May. Classes start at 9:00am and end at 6:00 pm with a one-hour
lunch break.
The program content consists of six courses offered in an intimate learning environment with high-quality faculty. For those
who have not taken any prior accounting courses or for those who need to refresh their understanding of basic accounting, we
offer an optional introductory course prior to the start of the main program. Completion of the main program and the introductory
class provide students with the necessary units to sit for the CPA exam. There are additional requirements to take the
California CPA Exam. Information about the CPA exam can be found at: http://www.dca.ca.gov/cba.
Additional information for both CAAP programs is available at the program’s webpage, http://www.scu.edu/business/edc/
programs/caap.cfm, or you can call the Accounting Department at (408) 554-4578.
Winter Meet the Firms
Internship Opportunities for the Junior Business Students
The first Winter Meet the Firms (WMTF) event, designed to facilitate internship opportunities for junior accounting and
other majors, took place on Friday, January 18, 2008. The event was held in Benson Center's Mission Room on the SCU
campus.
This lively late afternoon and evening of networking brought together 70 students, 12 firms and over 50 professionals from
accounting firms and corporations in the Silicon Valley area who were looking to fill summer internship positions at their
firms. In attendance were not only recruiters from the various firms, but many alumni of Santa Clara University. A recruiting
and networking event like this provides students the opportunity for an in-depth conversation with a recruiter or alum,
something that is difficult to do at a career fair.
Kudos to all the students who attended the event! They were well prepared and impressed the recruiters. If your firm was
not able to attend last year’s event, please join us for our second annual WMTF. We are looking forward to hosting the
event again on Wednesday, January 21, 2009.

Yongtae Kim Awarded Tenure
Page 5
Congratulations to Yongtae Kim for earning tenure and being promoted to Associate Professor
this past spring. Yongtae joined the accounting faculty in the fall of 2001, after obtaining
B.A. and M.A. degrees in Business Administration at Sogang University, Korea, and his Ph.D
in accounting at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Before entering the Ph.D. program
at SUNY Buffalo, Yongtae worked for KPMG Korea for three years and received his
Certified Public Accountant and Certified Tax Accountant designations in Korea.
Much of Yongtae’s early research was in the area of examining opportunistic financial reporting.
More recently, he has included in his research agenda the issues of voluntary disclosures,
the role of accounting information in credit markets and private companies, analysts’ earnings
and cash flow forecasts, and the mechanisms of equity offerings. With 14 publications, six
working papers, and additional works in progress, Yongtae’s research has been prodigious and
has significantly contributed to our understanding of the behaviors of players in our capital
markets. Yongtae teaches both financial and managerial accounting at the graduate and undergraduate levels. This fall quarter
he is teaching the combined financial and managerial accounting course in the weekend MBA program. He has been a
great colleague in the Accounting Department and Business School. This past year he chaired our successful recruiting efforts
and served on the EMBA task force to retool that program’s curriculum. This year he is serving as President of the Korea-American
accounting Professors Association.
Yongtae and his wife, Misook, live with their eight year old son, Ian, in the Cambrian area of San Jose. Their interests include
dining out and traveling. Congratulations to Yongtae!

The Leavey School Moves to Lucas Hall
In June, a decade-old dream was realized when the faculty of the Leavey School of Business
moved from Kenna and St. Joseph Halls into the new Lucas Hall. The $49 million
building was formally dedicated on September 14 by Fr. Locatelli.
The building has been named in honor of Donald L. Lucas, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist
whose leadership has included stints on the boards of directors of National Semiconductor,
Oracle, Cadence Design Systems, Macromedia, and several others. Mr. Lucas donated
the initial $15 million to help launch the building’s capital campaign.
Alumni who remember walking down the cramped third floor corridor of Kenna Hall with
the row of classrooms on one side and the faculty offices on the other side will be pleasantly
surprised by the layout of the new building. Lucas Hall has three floors containing 86,000
square feet – two-and-a-half-times the size of Kenna, and contains 12 classrooms, including
two designated for executive education, 102 faculty offices, 16 team project rooms, 6 large
executive conference rooms, a 100-seat seminar room, a business services center, and a
1,200 square foot café!
In addition, each classroom, conference room and team project room has full videoconferencing
capabilities, and each classroom has stare-of-the-art presentation capabilities. Wireless
internet access is available throughout the building, as well as on the surrounding
grounds.
Corporate contributions played a major role in the capital campaign (as the building was
100% privately funded), with the accounting firms leading the way. In fact, during his dedication
speech, Fr. Locatelli acknowledged this generosity and singled out the accounting
firms for special recognition. A simple walk though Lucas Hall shows tangible evidence of
that generosity. There is the Deloitte & Touche Undergraduate Business Programs Suite, the
Ernst & Young Accounting Classroom, and the PricewaterhouseCoopers Classroom and the
KPMG Classroom.

Alumna of the Year
Kristine (Tina) Caratan
At the May, 2008 Accounting Awards Banquet, the Accounting Department named Tina Caratan,
Class of 1974, as its 2008 Alumna of the Year. Popular and outspoken on almost every issue, Tina is a
role model for our current students, alumni, and alumnae.
Page 7
Tina grew up in La Mesa, California. Her parents were immigrants from Croatia (former Yugoslavia).
Her father, Kristo, for whom Tina was named, was an entrepreneurial
farmer, growing table grapes, pole tomatoes and
string beans. Her mother, Slava, was a homemaker. Tina has
two older sisters – Mary and Margaret, who live in Los Angeles
and Seattle, respectively.
Tina Caratan receiving the “Alumna of the Year”
award from Greg Vlahos, PWC Partner &
Accounting Department Advisory Board President
Tina attended Our Lady of Peace – an all girl’s preparatory
school – for her first 12 years of schooling. By the ninth
grade, she decided that she wanted to attend SCU. Her sister,
Margaret, had graduated from Gonzaga and she used to
come home from college with what Tina believed were “lots
of cool ideas.” Because of her interest in the U.S. space program,
Tina started her academic career at SCU as a math
major. She later switched to accounting after her roommate
convinced her that it would be a good career for a female.
In the early 1970s, however, there were relatively few fe-
males in accounting. She graduated without a job, but soon found a position with a small national CPA
firm called Lester Witte & Company. Over the next 27 years she worked for several CPA firms, eventually
becoming a partner in two small firms in San Francisco. She continued to stay in touch with SCU,
chairing its San Francisco alumni chapter in the 1980s and serving on the SCU alumni board. In January
2001, she rejoined Moss Adams to lead their Not-For-Profit practice in Northern California. She soon
began to work with Santa Clara University’s accounting department and joined the department’s Advisory
Board in 2004.
In 1987, Tina began serving on the California State Board of Accountancy Qualifications Committee, an
appointment that lasted 15 years. During her leadership years as chair of the Committee, she redesigned
the Form E (experience) form and argued that the Board should head toward a two tiered system in licensing
– which was later approved. In 1999, she was the American Woman’s Society of CPAs representative
to Beta Alpha Psi’s Advisory Forum. Her involvement with Beta Alpha Psi grew over time,
and she later assumed the role of vice-chair of the Forum in August 2005 and chair of the Forum in August
2006. Her term ended in August 2008.
Tina’s four years at SCU were “fabulous.” Many of her closest friends are SCU graduates and have been
friends since they were students. “Attending SCU in the early 1970s was vastly different than today,”
recalls Tina. “The good Jesuits were concerned that having more than 30% females would ruin the
school. Being in a school and a major that was predominately male was an experience. We were there
during the lottery draft for Vietnam. We studied hard and likely drank too much beer! But in the end
we came out okay and have led successful lives and careers.”
We congratulate Tina Caratan for her successful career, service to the profession and continuous involvement
with Santa Clara University.

The Accounting Association
The SCU Accounting Association (SCUAA) is a student-run organization that provides undergraduate accounting majors with professional
and social activities designed to stimulate and develop the skills and relationships essential to an accounting career. Last March
2008, Accounting majors elected four junior and four senior officers to lead the organization. Junior officers who were elected, are
Brittanie Bailor, Alyssa Lee, Matthew Leong, and Jessica Tuan. The senior officers elected are as follows:
James Stark
Kristen Yoon
Stacy Yano
Sheri Lee
THE ACCOUNTANT
I am from Darien, Illinois, which is a western suburb of Chicago. I attended high school at Benet Academy.
Much of my free time is spent dealing with sports in some manner, whether it is playing them, checking up on
my fantasy sports teams or tuning into Sports Center to see how the White Sox, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks
fared. I am an avid viewer of the Food Network, Jeopardy, Monday Night Football, South Park and The Price is
Right. In addition, I love playing spider solitaire.
This upcoming summer, I am going to be interning with KPMG in Chicago. Following my internship, I plan to
attend a one-year Master of Science in Accountancy program at a university in the Chicago area.
The most rewarding part of being an Accounting Association officer is helping to guide students on their career
paths. It is definitely a daunting and difficult task at first in regards to meeting and socializing with professionals.
During my tenure as an officer, I hope that I was helpful to other students in answering their questions.
I was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. My family decided to move to California during freshman year of high
school. I attended Prospect High School in Saratoga, California. During my high school years, it seems like I
spent most of my time learning and enhancing my English language skills. I enjoy playing piano and violin, so I
spent a lot of my time playing for my school string orchestra.
Last summer, I interned at Deloitte & Touche in their San Jose office. I really enjoyed my internship experience,
and I decided to work at Deloitte after graduation. I especially liked working in a team environment and commuting
to different client sites which always added a little excitement to my job as I was able to meet new team
members and new client personnel.
I enjoy being a Senior Officer of the Accounting Association because I can help students while I am doing event
planning, something that is fun for me. While working at the LSB Alumni Relations office for the past three
years, I learned various event planning and organizing skills. I am glad that I was able to bring these skills to the
Accounting Association events. I hope that students find our events helpful in making career decisions.
I grew up in Palo Alto, CA and graduated from Palo Alto High School. I decided to major in accounting for the
exposure it provides to all aspects of business. Especially in audit, you may work with other departments such as
finance or operations, and you can really learn how businesses operate. I am also working towards a minor in
English because having good written and oral communication skills are important. So far, I have enjoyed my
experience at SCU because of all the great opportunities I have had.
I decided to become a Senior Officer because I loved being a Junior Representative last year, and I like being
involved with the association, department, and student body.
Last summer I interned at Deloitte in San Francisco in audit, and I have accepted a full-time position with them
after graduation.
I am from South San Francisco, CA where I attended Mercy High School. The things that I really enjoyed about
my high school were the small class sizes, the teachers knowing all of our names and the supportive community
that we had. I chose to come to SCU mainly because it had all of these qualities, a great academic program, an
array of extracurricular activities and it was located in the heart of Silicon Valley.
Going into my senior year, I can honestly say that I would not change a single thing about my college experience.
I have had so many great opportunities to participate in a variety of activities, from playing intramural softball, to
being a desk receptionist in the Unity RLC, to being a Junior Rep/Senior Officer for the Accounting Association
and much more. I decided to become a Senior Officer because I wanted to give back to the community and help
guide accounting students, like my mentors did for me. This past summer, I interned with Ernst & Young in San
Jose and I plan on working with them after I graduate.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Case Competition
Page 13
For the past four years, Santa Clara University accounting students have participated in the PWC Case
Competition. The competition is designed to give students exposure to real world accounting/auditing
issues. It enables students to learn how the theory of business is applied in a real-world situation and to
understand that every decision has consequences. It also provides students with an opportunity to test
their critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills against hundreds of the best accounting students
from top schools around the country.
The competition was announced to all the business students in September. The orientation meeting took
place on campus on October 10, 2008. At the meeting, twenty-two teams were formed and each team
received a copy of the assigned case. The case dealt with the problem of meeting growing customer demand
faced by a leading energy company, Perpetual Energy Group (a fictitious company).
In the case environment, most of the U.S.-based energy providers such as Perpetual Energy Group are
experiencing difficulties meeting customer demand. Given these recent and sometimes persistent problems,
as well as concerns about the impacts of energy consumption on air, water, and other natural resources,
the teams were given two options to consider that might meet both the company’s short-term
and long-term demand requirements.
On October 24, 2008, each team had 12 minutes to present their proposal in front of a panel of PWC
partners and managers. After the presentation, the panel asked questions for another 12 minutes. The top
two teams with the best presentation won $1,000. All team presentations were recorded on video. The
video of the first place SCU team was sent to a PWC committee that reviews the videos of the winning
teams from all participating universities. That committee will select the top five videos. The winning
teams will receive $10,000 and a trip to New York City.
Accounting Information Night
Sharks, Oakland A’s, SF Giants tickets, digital cameras, iPods, an Adobe Creative Suite, and all kinds of gift packages
were just some of the prizes raffled off to students at Accounting Information Night, held on February 20,
2008. The purpose of the evening was to provide students with an introduction to possible career paths in the accounting
profession and insights into the life of a professional accountant.
Lewis Chew, CFO of National Semiconductor (SCU class of 1984), served as the moderator of the event. His enthusiasm
and sense of humor totally dispelled the “dull, boring” reputation accountants have acquired in literature
and movies. Selin Gurses (Assurance Senior Manager, PricewaterhouseCoopers), Simon Lee (Tax Partner, Moss
Adams), Jeff Osorio (CFO, Solaicx), Francis Santiago (Manager, KPMG), and Loire White (Senior Manager, Armanino
McKenna) served as panelists for the event. Each panelist described his or her organization and a “day in
the life of an accountant” in their respective positions.
Students were provided with cards on which to write questions before and throughout the discussion. They asked
questions about the number of hours spent at work, salaries at entry level positions, salaries five years out and ten
years out, promotion possibilities, the relative merits of working for a “Big 4” versus a smaller firm, travel requirements,
moving out of a purely accounting setting, getting an advanced degree (law or an MBA), the requirements
for CPA licensure in California, the importance of having a minor in your academic program, and the difference
between a major in finance and a major in accounting. The panelists answered the questions with charm, grace, and
humor.
After the panelists’ presentations and the question and answer period, students had the opportunity to interact with
the accounting professionals in attendance. Sixty-five professionals from many organizations, including Abbott,
Stringham, & Lynch, Protiviti, Armanino McKenna, Burr, Pilger, and Mayer, Lautze & Lautze, Ernst & Young,
PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Ireland San Fillipo, Deloitte, Grant Thornton, McGladrey & Pullen, WTAS,
Moss Adams, Adobe, Gallina, and National Semiconductor were present.
The faculty and students express their deepest gratitude to the panelists and professional volunteers who took the
time to inform our students about the accounting profession. If you would like to participate in our next Accounting
Information Night, scheduled for March 2009, please let us know.
