Cultural Landscapes – What is a Cultural Landscape?
Cultural Landscapes are
part of our legacy, they
tell the story of our
history and evolving
relationship with the
land, and understanding
them deepens our
awareness of sense of
place and cultural
identity
Hole-in-the-Rock Trail
Project Overview & Goals
The Hole In the Rock Trail is a Mormon
pioneer route that forged a passage
through over 200 miles of wilderness
land in southeastern Utah during the
autumn and winter of 1879.
In partnership with the National Park
Service and the University of Colorado, the
historic and cultural significance
of the trail and its special places
and stories is being documented
through a Cultural Landscape Report.
Project Overview & Goals
"And these young people would
realize the difficulty and how these
pioneers had done these really,
really hard things. And then that was
translated into the fact that they have
had experiences in their lives – life is
hard – and they if they realized their
pioneer heritage had done things
that were difficult, they too could do
the hard things."
Hole-in-the-Rock Trail
Project Overview & Goals
“In my view, that trail
represents sacred ground.
Really sanctified by the
sacrifice of these people who
literally gave everything that
they had, short of their lives, to
do what they did. And there is
a spirit I think associated with
places like that.”
