preserve and document the particular
techniques of Vietnamese embroidery works.
The same approach has been taken with
studying embroidery techniques such as crossstitch,
Jacobean embroidery, Tambour
embroidery, Cretan crochet, and others.
Hoi An Embroidery Story
2014-2015
The design is a combination of traditional folk motifs which tent to go in ancient stories
such like "Vinh quy bái tổ" (A successful man come back to his hometown, proudly
bringing back home her newly wed woman, and followers...), "Chợ phố" - town market,
or the scene of wedding on the boat...; plus my designs that inspired by my very first
impression of Hoi An as its own citizen: the favorite buildings or corners, festival of boat
racing with joyful men, street food vendors, young girls in áo dài after school time... The
colors, as a channel to express my emotion, therefore is fully alive and happy.
Then all the embroidered pieces are appliqué-ed on to a big hand-weaved fabric with the
dimension of 3mx30cm.
In order to follow the tradition of northern old
type embroidery, especially how to embroider
the faces, I have to actually "walk the miles",
track back to one of the 3 biggest embroidery
craft villages where.. no one do the
embroidery anymore, find the very old artisans
who can tell me how to do it properly. Lucky
me they're touched by my passion toward this
work and happy to pass all the knowledge so
that I can keep the tradition. Even my
neighbor next door to the atelier is from an
embroidery craft village and I talk to them
many times, like a small pupil, sometimes
they're impressed by a girl with such big love
to embroidery. By working on this project, I
built many bridges, was supported by many
interesting people, and therefore learn a lot. It
is very meaningful to me.
