HAMPSHIRE SCHOOL GAMES 2017
Energise Me organises the Level 3
Hampshire School Games, a multi-sport
competition that takes place every year
providing schools competition for young
people aged 7 to 16.
The School Games is a unique opportunity
to motivate and inspire millions of young
people across the country to take part in
more competitive school sport.
The Games are designed to build on the magic of London
2012 to enable every school and child to participate in
competitive sport, including meaningful opportunities for
disabled youngsters. Schools will compete locally in Level 2
competitions organised by a Local School Games organiser.
Winners will go through to represent their area at the Level 3
School Games in Aldershot on Thursday 29 June
(Primary Schools) and Friday 30 June (Secondary Schools).
The Games is backed by National Lottery funding through
Sport England. It is fully inclusive and increases the
opportunities for young people to take part in sport
throughout the year, offering some young people their
first taste of county-wide competition.
MEDAL DESIGN COMPETITION
As part of the Hampshire School Games cultural offer,
earlier in the year the Local Organising Committee (LOC)
for the Hampshire School Games held a design a medal
competition which will be made into the medals that will
be presented to Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winning
teams this year.
There were literally hundreds of entries and we are
delighted to announce the selected winning medal came
from a Year 4 pupil at North Waltham Primary School,
Basingstoke.
CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Over 170 athletes from Year 5 and Year 6 took part in the recent HSAA
U12 cross country championships which were held on Tuesday 7
March at Down Grange sports complex in Basingstoke.
The championship which is only in its
second year, allows selected athletes
the opportunity to compete against
other students from across Hampshire
representing their local School Games
Network.
There were some outstanding individual performances
across the championship races, resulting in a number of
Year 6 athletes (girls and boys) being selected to represent
Hampshire at the forthcoming Schools Inter Counties U13/
U14 competition later in March being staged in Reigate,
Surrey. A massive thank you to all SGO’s, athletes, parents
and schools for supporting this event which was a massive
success. We wish all athletes competing at the inter
counties good luck.
AREA(S) OF GOOD PRACTICE:
• Specialist Gymnastics and Dance teaching for every year
group once a week during class teacher’s PPA time.
• Establishing links with a wide number of sports clubs both
in and outside school. This led to more clubs and sporting
activities being offered to pupils before and after school.
• Raising the profile of sport in school and delivering
varied CPD to teachers.
• Increasing competitive opportunities both inside and
outside of school.
• Creating an inclusive environment where all children
are challenged and encouraged to have a go!
WHAT PRIORITY AREAS WERE IDENTIFIED?
• All pupils in school – The need to raise the profile of
sport in school was high, for both pupils and teachers.
CPD and competitive opportunities needed to be
provided to those who asked for it and needed it.
• To work collaboratively and in partnership with local
schools and sporting organisations.
HOW WAS IT IDENTIFIED?
• An audit of staff skills highlighted a need to up skill
staff and to also build confidence.
• Need to raise the quality of PE teaching in school.
• Desire to target the less active pupils.
• Need to create inclusive competitive opportunities
both in and outside school, where all children were
given a chance.
WHAT WERE THE INTENDED OUTCOMES?
• For all teachers to feel confident in delivering high quality
PE lessons, even in those where they felt less confident
previously. This would then lead to all children having
access to high quality PE teaching.
• To create an inclusive and dynamic programme of sport,
both inside and outside school, where all children would
feel encouraged to participate.
WHAT PROVISIONS WERE PUT IN PLACE?
• Children from all 12 classes apply to be Sports Prefects.
These children, alongside the School Sports Crew,
support in lessons and during competitive events.
• Inter-house competitions regularly held across a variety
of different sports.
• Links were built upon and more local competitions were
entered, which resulted in us achieving a 2nd place finish
in Tri-Golf at the 2016 Hampshire School Games.
• Coaches and specialist students from local colleges were
bought in to support curriculum delivery, after school clubs
and to deliver CPD to teachers.
• Strong relationships have been built with other local
schools through the delivery of CPD. Staff were able to
be covered in school to attend these sessions, then apply
their knowledge to their own teaching.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR US?
• We will continue to provide CPD throughout the course of
the year, as this has led to teachers having greater interest,
motivation and confidence when delivering PE in school.
• We will continue to provide opportunities for pupils to
participate in competitive sport competitions, both inside
and outside of school, as we have seen a large increase in
this since we started to promote it more in school.
Saints Foundation delivered an ‘Anti
Bullying Festival’ on Friday 18 November
2016, at Woodlands Community College as
part of anti-bullying week, which involved
running a football festival that focused on
values to actively combat bullying; respect,
equality and fair play were the focus areas.
As such, the rules and points system of this festival reflected
these values and differed to that of a normal football festival
(Please find the rules opposite).
The schools involved were Bassett Green Primary School,
Ludlow Junior School and Townhill Junior School, who are
part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme that
is delivered by Saints Foundation, and funded through the
Premier League Charitable Fund.
During the festival Kelvin Davis (Ex-Southampton FC
Goalkeeper) met and spoke with participants, as well
as being interviewed by the club’s media team.
The media team were able to capture the positive
atmosphere at the festival, and were able to publicise
this through social media and sharing pictures from
the day with the participating schools. Players responded
extremely well to the values and could explain the
definitions of the values and how they can relate to them
in school. Please feel free to use and adapt the rules
below for any festivals you may run in your school.
06 07
RULES
• 6 a-side (8 players per team).
• 10 minute games.
• Kit, shin pads and appropriate footwear must
be worn (3G pitch).
• Each team played each other once: –
1 normal game, 1 game where you can pick the
rules of the game and, 1 game where the rules
of the game have been picked by the opposition.
• After each game each team will be awarded
points for the result (3 points for winning,
2 points for drawing, and 1 point for participating).
• How well they followed the rules of the game
(normal rules, own rules, or opposition rules).
• The constructive feedback given to the opposing
team (What Went Well, Even Better If, 2 and a wish).

THE PE SUITE
THE GOLDEN MILE
Energise Me are working in partnership with Hampshire School
Nurses, School Games Organisers and Local Authorities on a
county wide project, The Golden Mile, in 2017.
The Golden Mile is a safe, simple and
measurable health & physical activity
initiative accessible to all pupils regardless
of age or ability.
A fresh and innovative teaching resource
developed from within Hampshire,
The PE Suite challenges children to a
greater depth of physical literacy.
Aiming to empower all teachers to lead and facilitate
outstanding PE, the resource features an online library
of over 500 high quality video demonstrations covering
key physical skills and activities across the primary
PE curriculum.
What makes The PE Suite different is the principle of using
children to lead children’s learning. An annual subscription
starts from just £295 for school wide access and is
supported by a range of CPD options.
To subscribe or find out more please contact
info@thepesuite.com, call 02392 989285 or
visit www.thepesuite.com
Through the Golden Mile we aim to increase the amount of
time each day pupils from Hampshire and IOW are active in
schools by walking, jogging or running around a measured
distance (the Golden Mile Track) within the safety of the
school grounds. By participating in the Golden Mile project
schools will not only provide their pupils with greater access
to physical activity, but they will also see the wider gains
of regular activity with improved health benefits, improved
classroom behaviour and concentration levels, teamwork
and leadership.
There will be no cost for Hampshire and IOW schools
to sign up to the Golden Mile Project, we just ask that
each school has a named co-ordinator who can attend
a training session and be a champion in their school.
The concept is simple, but it is highly effective as any
school and any pupil can take part. Free Golden Mile
monitor t-shirts and resources will be distributed to
schools who have signed up and attended training.
“THE INTRODUCTION OF THE GOLDEN MILE HAS
BEEN A VERY POSITIVE ONE AT OUR SCHOOL.
AS IT IS SO EASY TO MANAGE - THERE HAS
BEEN FAR MORE ENGAGEMENT TO OTHER
PROVISIONS THAT WE HAVE PREVIOUSLY TRIED.”
CONTEXT
The overall quality of PE is already exceptional.
WHAT WAS THE INTENDED PRIORITY?
• Keep the majority of children stimulated, motivated
and continually learning new things.
• Engage the children identified as less active or in
need of support and enable them to achieve a
higher standard of physical literacy.
WHAT WERE THE INTENDED OUTCOMES?
• Improve the breadth and depth of the curriculum.
WHAT PROVISIONS WHERE PUT IN PLACE?
• The Golden Mile was introduced for all children.
• The PE Suite was used to provide CPD for staff
and facilitate high quality modelling in PE lessons.
• New curriculum units such as dance, new games and
advanced gymnastics were introduced using The PE
Suite to facilitate learning.
• Special ‘Fit Club’ was set up for children identified
as less active.
IMPACT
• The children have been inspired by the demonstrations.
• The use of technology excites and engages children.
• Staff feel confident and motivated about PE lessons.
BADMINTON ENGLAND
NEW SCHOOLS OFFER
New for 2017, the awesome foursome who form the Racket Pack
will become familiar names over the coming months as Badminton
England embarks on a mission to revolutionise the delivery of
badminton to primary school aged children.
Launched at the YONEX All England, The Racket Pack is set to give children
aged five to eleven the chance to learn the basics of badminton in fun, bitesize
modules and collect all the skills needed to emulate their favourite character.
Sessions can be delivered during both curriculum and extra-curricular time with a clear link to the local badminton
club and community. While delivery will predominantly take place in the school setting, it has been designed to be
used by clubs and leisure centres as well.
And regardless of if they play in primary schools or junior clubs and leisure facilities across the country, youngsters
will be able to track their Racket Pack credentials against an award scheme using their Racket Pack passport,
in order to support retention into adolescence.
So whether a child is destined to become the next Chris or Gabby Adcock, or just a badminton enthusiast
for life, The Racket Pack will provide the early pathway for their development within the biggest racket sport
on the planet.
The Racket Pack is now available to deliver. Interested?
