About the University of Pretoria
3
UP is a leading research university in
South Africa and one of the largest in
the country. The University has seven
campuses as well as a number of
other sites of operation, such as the
Pretoria Academic Hospital. Central
administration is located at the
Hatfield Campus.
The University of Pretoria offers more
than 1 800 academic programmes
in two of the official languages,
namely Afrikaans and English. (Some
programmes and modules are offered
only in English.)
In 1996, the University of Pretoria
became the university with the highest
research output in South Africa and
we have maintained this status. The
University of Pretoria celebrated its
Centenary in 2008.
The academic programmes of the
University are offered in nine faculties,
as well as a business school. The
faculties comprise a total of 140
departments and 85 centres, institutes
and bureaus. UP is at the forefront of
tertiary education in the country and
collaborates with world-class partners
to ensure continued excellence in
Considering the University of Pretoria?
The University of Pretoria is a multifaculty
research-intensive university
with campuses in Pretoria, its
surrounds, and in the country’s
economic hub, Johannesburg. The
University is conveniently situated
in close proximity to government
departments and major research
entities in Pretoria, including the
National Research Foundation (NRF)
and the Council for Scientific and
Industrial Research (CSIR).
The University provides an
environment that is stimulating,
intellectually challenging and
conducive to optimising teaching and
learning. The approach to education
is holistic. Through participation in
the wide range of campus activities
and societies focusing on sports, arts
and culture, students become wellrounded
citizens.
As one of South Africa’s oldest and
most prestigious institutions of higher
education, the University of Pretoria
provides a refreshing mix of academic
tradition and progressive vision. The
latter is brought to life by means of
world-class research that results in
positive, tangible contributions to both
local and global communities.
Welcome Message
Dear Principals, Coaches
and Participants
I wish to extend warmest greetings to everybody attending the National All
Girls Festival 2017 being held in our capital city, Pretoria, also affectionately
known as the Jacaranda City. This year we are celebrating the 18th
anniversary of the National All Girls Festival. During the past 17 years,
girls from all over the country have come together at some of our finest
schools to compete in various sporting and cultural codes. Although the
competition element is ever-present, the essential character of the festival
has not changed. In essence the festival brings together young people from
all walks of life, creates opportunities to build new friendships and fosters a
better understanding of unity in diversity. We learn to respect our differences
yet celebrate the unique privilege of being girls in public single-sex schools.
The planning committee of the 2017 festival wanted a theme that our
Generation Z learners can specifically relate to. Every All Girls Festival that
I have attended over the past 10 years has had its own special touch and
this year’s will be no exception. After long deliberation, we decided on
Beyond# as our theme. Since we are hosting the 18th festival, we thought it
appropriate to give it a brand new look. Bearing in mind that, at the age of
18, our girls move beyond the safety and security of the school environment
towards a future where they are expected to take a huge leap of faith into
an exciting but uncertain world, was what served as inspiration behind our
choice of this year’s theme.
Beyond# embraces the opportunity that technology has provided in bringing
people closer by means of communication regardless of the distance
separating them. An app has been developed enabling all to follow the
events of the day from anywhere in South Africa. Participants can, by means
of their posts via Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, contribute in a positive way
towards the character of the Festival this year. Families and friends who
cannot travel to Pretoria will be able to experience what is happening at the
event thanks to modern technology. We urge you to assist us in establishing
something very special for future festivals as it is our desire to pass this App on
to hosting schools for use in the years to come. We hereby open a window
of possibilities for future festivals. I am excited about this development and
sincerely hope that you will find joy in using it.
Hosting an event of this magnitude would not have been possible without
sponsors. We are therefore privileged and grateful to have the University of
Pretoria as our main sponsor this year. Thanks to their contribution we can
host an exciting festival that will blow you Beyond#. We will also have the
All Girls’ Festival 2017 Program

5
Vice Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, Prof Cheryl de la Rey addressing
us at the closing ceremony. From the word go she and her team have come
on board and walked the extra mile to assist us in investing in our youth. We
also wish to thank Mrs Karen Du Toit, Principal of Pretoria High School for Girls
and her staff for their kind assistance and the use of their facilities for the
duration of the festival.
Furthermore a Beyond#-charity-campaign will run concurrently during the
festival. Should you for some reason not eat all the food from the lunch or
dinner packs, it will be donated to a charity organisation that feeds the
homeless in the inner city of Pretoria. We thank you in advance for showing
your compassion and support by not throwing food in rubbish bins, but rather
placing it in the bags provided. It will be, Beyond#-awesome!
The time has come for all participants to join us in making history. AHMP is
eagerly awaiting your arrival. We trust that the opening ceremony will ignite
a truly festive tone that will prevail for the duration of the festival and will
leave you Beyond#-blown-away.
Enjoy the competition, but bear in mind the words of Mike Marshall, “Victory is
in the quality of the competition, not just the final score”. Sometimes we learn
more from defeat than in receiving the gold medal. We do, hoever, expect
from those competing with us to give only their best in aiming to win. The All
Girls Festival is characterised as an event where good clean sportsmanship
has always prevailed. May we again experience this throughout the 2017
festival and play fair. Even if you do not win the debate or a game, earn
the respect of your peers by being worthy opponents and accepting the
outcome. We are also looking forward to view the art work that will be
displayed at the closing ceremony and to listen to the orchestras and mass
serenade group that will be performing then. The winning short film created
by the Drama participants will also be viewed at the closing. Make an effort
to visit the mouth-watering Beyond The Plate Competition as it promises to
be particularly interesting.
May you leave Pretoria with a smile on your face and a heart filled with love
and joy. We wish you Beyond#-success in your future endeavours and thank
you for your contribution towards the 2017 Festival. I leave you with the words
of the late Maya Angelou: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and
liking how you do it”.
Tournament Rules
1. Teams will be divided in 2 groups and play each other in a round robin format within each group.
After the group stage there will be cross-over matches to determine the final positions.
2. The overall winner will be the school with the highest number of points after the cross-over
matches but if a school is unbeaten throughout the competition that school will be the winner
even if another school has more points. In the event of a tie between the schools in the group
stage, the result of the match between the two schools will determine the winner. If this match
was a tie, the points in the games will be counted to determine the winner. In case of a 3-way
tie, the results against the schools not involved in the tie will be eliminated first and if there is still a
tie, points in the games will be counted. In the unlikely event that there is still a tie the winner will
be determined by a coin toss.
3. No changes are to be made to the playing order as given in at the managers’ meeting.
4. If a player sits out or is injured, order moves up and the reserve plays at #4. Reserves (number 5’s)
will play friendly matches in each fixture, their points won’t count.
5. The order of play will be 5,3,4,2,1.
6. Players are required to mark and referee the match on their own, the winner is the referee.
7. The marking order will be 1, 5, 3, 4, 2.
Tournament Rules
1. There are 16 teams competing initially in a round robin – 4 pools of 4 teams (schools) per group.
2. Each round robin tie will consist out of 4 singles matches and 2 doubles matches.
3. Singles as well as doubles matches will consist of a ‘Proset’ in the round robin phase.
4. Every round robin tie must be completed.
5. One point will be allocated for each game won. No bonus points will be allocated.
6. After completion of the round robin phase, the top 2 teams in each group will qualify to compete
for positions 1 to 8. The teams that are 3rd and 4th will similarly compete for positions 9 to 16 for the
tournament.
7. When 2 teams in a group have an equal score after the round robin phase, the team who won
the head to head tie in the round robin will be the leading team. Should the head to head score
also be even, then the team who won the nr.1 doubles pair match will be the winners. When
more than 2 teams have equal points, the relevant team’s points against each other will be taken
in consideration.
8. Singles matches in the play-out stage consist of the best of 3 tie-breaker sets (with the 3rd set
starting on 2-2).
9. No let rule will be applicable. When the serve touches the net and then bounces in, the point
continues. In this case, any player will be allowed to hit the ball.
10. No add rule will be applicable. On a deuce score the receiver can choose the side to which the
opponent must serve.
11. In the play-out stage ties will be played until there is a result (in other words the first team to win 4
matches). In the case of equal matches, the sets and then the games will be counted to
determine the winner. In the rare case of points still being equal, the team who won the nr.1
doubles pair match will be the winners.
12. Players will be nominated in order of merit prior to the start of the tournament. The nomination
list will be completed at the team managers’ meeting. The order is to be held throughout the
tournament. In the event of a player being rested or injured, the rest of the players will move up
one position.
13. A reserve player can be used for singles and/or doubles.
14. In the event of a player being injured during a singles match, the injured player will need to forfeit
the match. The reserve player can take the injured player’s place in the doubles match, if needed.
15. Singles as well as doubles pairings are to be nominated before the start of the tie.
16. Players who are not ready to play within 15 minutes after play is set to commence, will forfeit the
match (after the committee took the circumstances into account).
17. The team mentioned first in the order of play is to collect the balls from the tournament desk and
return them again after completion of the match.
18. 8 Balls will be allocated for each tie in the round robin phase (two balls per singles). The same
balls used in the singles will be used for the doubles matches. In the play-out phase 12 balls will be
used per tie (3 balls per singles).
