Applied Biostratigraphy
and Sequence Stratigraphy
in Oil Exploration and
Development
Executing and Integrating
an Analytical Program

‘Where Oil is First Found is in the
Minds of Men’ Wallace E Pratt
‘Oil can also be found in new sedimentary basins
or in old basins but with new ideas but it is rarely
found in old basins with old ideas’. But carrying
this one step further oil can be found in old basins
using sometimes old data to generate new ideas.
Many oil and gas companies have legacy
biostratigraphical data that in the hey day for this
scientific application was routinely gathered on all
new exploration wells and most appraisal wells
and has since been buried sometimes stratified in
oil company libraries and repositories to be
replaced by new software programs offering
whizzy and compelling visualizations that although
keeping the companies up and current with the
latest technological edge do not provide a
replacement for hard scientific data.
Often biostratigraphical data is acquired through
contract service companies who provide reports
on their findings. These reports follow a standard
format providing the ascribed age,
palaeoenvironment with a brief description of the
microfossil assemblages and then place the
studied section with the use of biozonations into a
chronostratigraphy.
The transition is often lost in then how to use this
data optimally in the exploration, appraisal and
development process. As ‘no man is an island’
biostratigraphical data lying their resplendent on
its own will never provide those new ideas, it has
to be fully integrated with all the other geological
and seismic data to provide the vital key to help
unlock those new reserves.
In these cost conscious times for the oil
and gas industry why should a manager
throw what remains of much reduced
budgets at software packages and
new but expensive and sometimes
unproven downhole logging tools when
the real treasure trove to finding
those replacement reserves is there in
the data that he already has.
But how are these new ideas unlocked?
Avada Oil and Gas is running an online
course on Applied Biostratigraphy
in Oil Exploration and Development which
is a guide on how to optimally integrate
this data and also how to use it towards a
high-resolution sequence stratigraphy.
This course will be available from April 3 rd 2017.
If new biostratigraphical data is required
then it also provides an understanding and
the necessary knowledge of how to plan for
a cost effective analytical program to get the
very most for the very least outlay. It is time
to re-invigorate your exploration methodology
and get the most out of what you have, to
generate those new ideas that keep you ahead
of the competition.
Remember ‘the present is the key to the past’.
Take what you have now and reinvent it.
Create those new ideas that will find that
new oil in whatever basin new or old that
is the focus of the company’s endeavours.
Applied Biostratigraphy & Sequence Stratigraphy in Oil Exploration & Development

Applied Biostratigraphy & Sequence Stratigraphy in Exploration & Development,
Available Online From April 3 rd 2017
This course provides the key to optimizing the use and the integration of biostratigraphical data with real
working examples from Africa and SE Asia.
Company Benefits

Optimum use of biostratigraphical data that is often acquired by a company but not fully utilized.
Planning of biostratigraphical analyses and programs for best results at a minimum cost.
Higher resolution reservoir correlations from exploration through to development situations (flow unit
correlations for static models).
Sequence and then facies interpretations and better reservoir prediction capabilities after integration with
the seismic.
This leads to new play definitions and ultimately to new lead and prospect determination.
Rejuvenation of mature exploration areas with new ideas to find missed oil accumulations.
Generation of new exploration plays and concepts for wildcat drilling.
This course will provide the necessary technical knowhow for the individual to feel comfortable with the
utilization and the integration of biostratigraphical data into their everyday work flows. This will aid their
efforts in both the exploration for new hydrocarbons and in the development of existing fields.
Personal Impact

The individual will gain a practical working knowledge of different biostratigraphical techniques.
An understanding of how to plan and optimize a biostratigraphical program from which microfossils to
process for, to optimum sample spacing.
How to use best use biostratigraphical data in well to well correlations.
How to identify the pitfalls in the use of biostratigraphical data and therefore to optimize its use in
sediments of different ages and in different palaeoenvironments.
How to use biostratigraphical data to identify sequences and sequence boundaries and how to integrate it
with other geological and seismic data.
How to use biostratigraphical data for new play definitions in exploration areas and how also it can be used
for facies interpretations and reservoir correlations in appraisal and development situations.
