Welcome Note from Dean
Welcome to the Faculty of Management and Economics
(FaME) of Tomas Bata University in Zlín (TBU).
FaME is at present a respected faculty focused on economic
and managerial education that offers degree programmes
in English at all levels of study. Among fundamental
principles, which the Faculty follows and we are proud of,
is having a high standard of practical training within tuition,
project teaching, close cooperation with practice, or
the importance of research and development
and cooperation with scientific institutions.
Moreover, the Faculty puts a great emphasis
on personal development of students and an
individual approach not only during tuition.
At present, almost 3,000 students study
at our Faculty and more than 10 per cent of
these are foreign students coming from more
than 30 countries around the world. We believe
that the international experience enables students
to gain necessary knowledge and skills to attain
competitive advantage not only for their future career
but also for their personal development.
The Faculty of Management and Economics belongs among
the three most active faculties of economics in the Czech
Republic regarding internationalization. Student and teacher
mobilities and their development, the high-quality degree
programmes we offer in English, double degree programmes,
international projects, joint research projects, short-term
courses, etc. are among our top priorities. The Faculty has
already been taking part in various international projects, among
others prestigious projects of governmental scholarships,
Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus+, Horizon 2020, CEEPUS and other
educational and research programmes. International
scientific research cooperation belongs among the
main priorities of the Faculty, too.
Besides high-quality studies offered by the
Faculty, our aim is to provide students with the
most appropriate background and facilities
during their stay. The University has its own hall
of residence, refectory, modern library, but also
a sports club, which the students can join. There
is also a student organization called Buddy System
Zlín that takes care of our foreign students and organizes
numerous activities for them every week. Zlín as a university
city offers the students many leisure time activities as well as
a wide range of cultural events.
At the Faculty, we strive to fulfil Tomas Bata’s motto:
‘Think globally, act locally.’

Tomas Bata University in Zlín
Tomas Bata University in Zlín (TBU) is a progressive and modern
university which lays strong emphasis on internationalization and R&D
activities following the current trends of higher education in the world.
The University is named after the founder of the shoe industry in Zlín
and the world-renowned entrepreneur Tomas Bata (1876 – 1932) who
played a significant role in the transformation of life in the town of Zlin
as well as in the whole Czech Republic, and of its economy as well.
With a current student population of more than 10,700, TBU ranks
among medium-sized Czech universities. TBU is comprised of six
faculties offering to students the possibility to study technology,
economics, management, natural sciences, informatics, humanities,
health care, logistics and arts. Students at all levels of education
are provided with modern facilities aimed to support their personal
development and skills. During the classes, strong emphasis is put not
only on the theoretical part but also on the practical part of studies.
The University lays great emphasis on the
development of internationalization. Every year
hundreds of international students from more than
40 countries worldwide study at TBU, creating
a valuable environment for intercultural interaction,
knowledge sharing and an enriching experience
for all. Furthermore, R&D activities carried out in
cooperation with universities and R&D institutions
from the Czech Republic as well as from all over the
world are of great importance to the University.
In 2012, a prestigious certificate – ECTS Label – was
awarded to TBU by the European Commission. The
ECTS Label is the most significant European certificate
awarded in the sphere of tertiary education and is
recognized as a proof of high quality of the relevant
higher education institution.

Faculty of Management and Economics
The Faculty of Management and Economics is
a modern educational and scientific institution that
ranks among top economic faculties in the Czech
Republic. The FaME was established as the second
oldest faculty of Tomas Bata University in Zlín in 1995
and with student population of almost 3,000, the
FaME is the largest faculty at TBU.
The Faculty educates and prepares students to
become professionals in various economic fields:
• accounting and taxes
• finance
• management and marketing
• enterprise economics
• industrial engineering
• quality and production control
• health care management
• design management
• public sector administration
and regional development
One of the key factors determining long-term success of our Faculty is
the historical tradition and importance of Tomas Bata as well as the
development of his uniquely Czech and world-recognized conception
of management, enterprise economics, and the integration of
enterprise and social education. The FaME organizes different events
related to Tomas Bata’s heritage for students, academic staff and
companies. The Faculty also participates in various activities organized
by the Tomas Bata Foundation.
Students at all levels of education are provided with modern facilities
in order to advance their personal development and increase the
employability of the Faculty’s graduates. At the Faculty strong
emphasis is put on close cooperation with businesses in different
economic fields and public organisations. Students have a large
number of opportunities to apply their theoretical knowledge into
practice during their studies, for example practical trainings, working
on their Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis in cooperation with companies
and other institutions, discussions and seminars with professionals and
experts from business sphere, or participation in different projects.
The FaME demonstrates not only a commitment to high
level of quality at all levels of studies, but also puts strong
emphasis on R&D activities that are carried out in close
cooperation with enterprises and institutions within the
region and worldwide. The scientific research areas are
focused mainly on performance of enterprises, public
sector institutions, clusters and regions, knowledge
management, corporate social responsibility and
management in health care.
The FaME is also a member of a prestigious group of three
Czech universities that are allowed to admit students
from developing countries to their degree programmes
accredited in English within the projects of governmental
scholarships. The International Week, which is
organized for international partners at TBU every year,
belongs among other significant international activities. It
gives them a great opportunity to visit the University, the
town of Zlín, meet Czech students during the lectures and
broaden and strengthen the cooperation with the Faculty.

institutions in Europe and in the world.

accredited in Czech or English which enable students
to obtain the Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree.

the TBU Summer School, focusing on different economic and
management fields.

International students can choose from

The programme is designed mainly to introduce students to basic theoretical
and general knowledge in various fields of business management. Students
have the option to focus on specific aspects of economic and managerial
practices, such as enterprise economics, management, marketing,
accounting and taxes, production control and management, finance,
and banking, among others. Graduates from this programme possess the
requisite knowledge that enables them to work in industrial enterprises,
trading companies and financial institutions.
FOLLOW-UP MASTER’S PROGRAMMES IN ENGLISH

Economics and Management
Degree course: Management and Marketing
This degree course introduces students to the areas of enterprise
competitiveness, new trends in marketing, new approaches to
managerial development, intercultural diversity of education
in European cyberspace, commercial law, and differences in the
perception of advertising between the lay public and expert and
cooperation management. Applicants for this degree course from
the developing countries may ask for government scholarship.
Degree course: Business Administration
The degree course in Business Administration is designed to offer
students the opportunity to acquire new knowledge in corporate
management, managerial accounting, project management,
controlling, logistics and other related disciplines. The aim is to
equip students with problem-solving skills to enable them to
respond to challenges in the real business environment.
Economic Policy and Administration
Degree course: Finance
This degree course involves core theoretical and methodological
course units focused on finance, students are also trained to
practically apply the theoretical knowledge in the field of finance.
The degree course includes professional training focused on gaining
general knowledge of specific financial management disciplines
and skills, corporate finance, money and capital markets,
public finance, international accounting (IAS/IFRS), taxation, tax
consulting and auditing from the perspective of domestic and
foreign environment.
DOCTORAL PROGRAMMES IN ENGLISH

In this doctoral course, particular emphasis is laid
on the methodology of research activities including
the extension of some professional presumptions.
Students can conduct research and specialize in
management, enterprise economics, marketing,
production and technology rationalization. Within this

Not only students, but also academic, research and administrative

two- or three-week summer courses in different economic
fields. In addition, participants are also provided with
very interesting programme including the opportunity
to attend various cultural events, to get acquainted with
Czech culture and traditions and to discover Zlín and its

Erasmus+
The aim of the project within the programme Erasmus+
called “Pilot project: Entrepreneurship education for
University students” is to prepare methodology supporting
business activities of students during their University
studies. The expected outputs of this two-year project (2016-
2018) will be, except the above-mentioned methodology
of entrepreneurship education, case studies based
on implementation of this methodology, the evaluation
tool in order to assess students skills connected with
doing business and so-called BarCamp “Entrepreneurship”
or an open conference of young entrepreneurs. In
the academic year 2017/2018, TBU students will be offered
the courses of Business Academy 1 and 2.
Horizon 2020
The FaME participates in the project entitled “Social Sciences and
Humanities for Advancing Policy in European Energy (SHAPE-
ENERGY)”. The project has received funding from the EU for two
years (2017-2019), and is co-ordinated by the Global Sustainability
Institute, Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge, UK).
CEEPUS Programme
A Central European exchange programme implemented
by higher education institutions in Central and South East
Europe provides an opportunity for student and academic
staff mobility. The Faculty is an active member of the
CEEPUS programmes - Rural Tourism Programs Network
(CIII-SK-0505-00-1516).
International Projects
Currently, the FaME participates in the following prestigious projects.
Erasmus Mundus
The Faculty of Management and Economics participates in two Erasmus
Mundus partnership projects that foster internationalization, support
student and academic staff mobility from Asia to the European Union
and from the European Union to Asia, promote research, inter and
intra-university cooperation and cultural awareness. A multidisciplinary
consortium of partners focuses on Bachelor’s, Master’s, doctoral,
postdoctoral students and academic staff who can benefit from
special learning, research and teaching facilities available at the partner
institutions. The projects financially support short-term mobility
(exchange students or academic staff), the minimum duration of which
is one month, but also long-term degree programmes up to 3 years.
Students or academic staff from all over the world can participate in the
Erasmus Mundus projects.

Research at FaME
The Faculty lays great emphasis on research activities carried
out in close cooperation with enterprises and institutions
within the region and worldwide. The Faculty is a unique
place, where the finest academic minds can discuss their
thoughts and the current trends in their spheres of expertise
and also interact with the professionals from different
business spheres of expertise and with students.

FaME participates in a number of research projects funded
by the European Commission (Horizon 2020), the Grant
Agency of the Czech Republic, the Technology Agency of the
Czech Republic, the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic,
the European Social Fund, the University Development
Fund and many more. Moreover, international scientific
cooperation in research projects is one of the major priorities
of the Faculty, too.

This international conference is organized by the Faculty in
spring every two years and provides a great opportunity for
experts from the academic world as well as representatives
of companies, governmental organizations or international
institutions to meet. All accepted papers are published in the
proceedings, and may later be approved for inclusion in the
Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index
database (2011, 2013 and 2015 Conference Proceedings have
been included in the Web of Science).
The Faculty of Management and Economics regularly
organizes an International Conference on Finance
and Economics in cooperation with Ton Duc Thang
University in Vietnam.
International Conference for Ph.D. Students
and Young Researchers

The annual international conference is mainly focused on
doctoral students and young researchers. The main aim
of this conference is to connect young researchers with
the finest academic minds to discuss their research topics.
This conference gives a great base for finding common
research topics and creation of joint research projects.
The Faculty publishes a scientific periodical – Journal
of Competitiveness – that offers results of basic and
applied economic research of domestic and international
authors in the English language. The journal concentrates
on the fields of competitiveness of individual companies,
clusters of companies, regions or national economics
from different points of view. Articles focused on
microeconomics, management, marketing, personnel,
financial management as well as problems of national
economy and regions or other economic subjects
connected with competitiveness are welcome. Further

The Faculty organizes the annual SVOČ competition
(Competition for the Best Student Research and
Professional Work) to give students an opportunity
to explore the world of scientific research in order to
enable them to develop innovative ideas in the sphere
of economics and business. Furthermore, projects
aimed at monitoring the performance of talented
students and working with them have recently been
implemented at the Faculty.

Extracurricular Activities
Teaching and Learning Facilities
University Library
The University Library is located in the new University
Centre designed by Prof. Eva Jiřičná, a world-renowned
architect. Almost 100,000 books, hundreds of magazines,
around 25,000 e-periodicals, and approximately
60 databases are important information resources
provided by the University Library. Computers as well
as connections providing Internet access for laptop users
are available in the Library. A copier and a printer can be
found on every floor. Students can also use special rooms
intended for group study.
The TBU Library is listed on the prestigious website
www.librarybuildings.info among the 64 best
contemporary European libraries. Thanks to its huge
book and periodicals’ collections and other facilities, it
can be compared to other highly rated university libraries
all over the world. The University Library is open to all
students, subject to a simple registration procedure.
University Hall of Residence
Student accommodation is available in the TBU Halls of Residence
in fully equipped single and double rooms with a kitchenette and
full sanitary facilities. The rooms have Internet connections and
all buildings offer computer rooms with Internet access. There are
also TV rooms, student computer rooms, laundry rooms/drying
rooms, etc. All buildings of the University Halls of Residence are
located within easy walking distance of other University buildings.
Catering
Catering services are available for students and staff in two
Refectories and one Restaurant. Students and staff can choose
from no less than nine different meals every day, including
vegetarian dishes. Students can also buy snacks and drinks in the
Cafeteria. The food provided in the Refectories, Restaurant and
Cafeteria is prepared with equipment of high standard; hence, the
meals served are healthy and of good quality. Students can use
their Student ID Card to buy meals at a reduced price.
Buddy System Zlín
The members of the student organization Buddy System Zlín are
ready to welcome international students at the University and
help them feel like home in Zlín. Buddy System Zlín is a group
of enthusiastic students of all TBU faculties, who will contact
international students and provide them with relevant information
before their arrival and during their stay, especially during the
first few days. They also organize various events for international
students, including trips, sports activities, meetings, movie nights
and cultural evenings during the academic year. Buddy System
Zlín can be proud of being a member of the International Erasmus
Student Network that facilitates the study and social life of foreign
students not only in the Czech Republic.

University Sports
Tomas Bata University in Zlín has its own sports centre located in the
building of the Faculty of Applied Informatics. There are 2 gyms and
a fitness centre. Students who join the University Sports Club can use
these facilities at any time during the whole week. Students can take
part in any of the organized activities (e.g. aerobics, body-building,
spinning, cycling, swimming, inline skating, football, floorball,
volleyball, softball, skiing, basketball, tennis, table-tennis, hiking,
climbing, soccer, taekwondo and squash). Moreover, the Rector’s
Sports Day is held annually; students and staff have the opportunity
to compete in various indoor and outdoor sports disciplines.
Entertainment
Several cultural events are held annually at TBU
in Zlín, among them the Gala Ball, organized
traditionally by students of the Faculty of Multimedia
Communications, the Christmas Tree Lighting Up
Ceremony, Christmas Party, and Rag Day - a traditional
parade of young people marching through the town
wearing masks and fancy dress costumes, with
concerts featuring performers of various musical
styles, TBU Freshmen Welcome Party, Researchers’
Night, BusFest, Culturea and many more. Another
popular event held at TBU in Zlín is the Miss Academia
beauty contest. The traditional student competition
aims at selecting the number one female university
student in the Czech Republic.
Zlín has always had a rich cultural heritage. Two
traditional town institutions include the Theatre
and the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra.
There are also many other entertainment options
such as the 14|15 Bata Institute, Malá Scéna theatre,
and dozens of private galleries, folklore ensembles,
modern rock clubs, cinemas, art agencies and
nice cafés. Visitors can also try out boating on the
Bata Canal. Zlín also holds several prestigious
sports events, e.g. the Barum Rally - European Rally
Championship, which runs through the town and its
surroundings during summer.

Living in the Town of Zlín
The Czech Republic (Česká republika in Czech) is a landlocked
country in Central Europe. It is often said that the Czech Republic is
located in the ‘heart of Europe’ and this unique location makes the
country accessible from major European cities. It shares borders with
Germany in the west, Poland in the north, Slovakia in the east and
Austria in the south. The capital city, located in the north central part of
the country, is Prague. Nowadays, the Czech Republic is a democratic
country based on the parliamentary system and it is a member of the
European Union, the Schengen Area, the United Nations, NATO, and
many other significant international organizations and institutions.
Administratively, the Czech Republic is divided into 14 regions. One of
these regions is Zlín which is located near the Slovakia borders.
The Zlín Region has approximately 760,000 inhabitants and the town
of Zlín is its administrative centre. The town lies in a mild climatic area
of south-eastern Moravia (approximately 300km far from Prague
and 100km far from Brno). The town of Zlín is known as the birthplace
of the founder of the colossal Bata Shoe Empire, Tomas Bata (1876-
1932), and a place where his company flourished in the first half of the
20th century.
First-time visitors to Zlín are greatly impressed by
its beauty, greenery and the friendly environment.
Zlín spreads out across the Dřevnice River valley, and
a walk through the town is an unforgettable experience
that leaves pleasant memories in the visitors’ minds.
The advantage of the town is its layout, because
all important places, buildings and institutions are
located within easy walking distance. The green areas
in the centre as well as in the closest surroundings
offer lots of possibilities to relax, to do sports or to
spend a great day avoiding noise and air pollution.
Moreover, people who are interested in culture will
certainly appreciate many exhibitions, theatre, the
philharmonic orchestra and various events organized
also by our students. The town of Zlín also fascinates
its visitors with its unique functionalist architecture.
Even though the town has a relatively small size,
there are lots of possibilities for everyday activities.
In addition, the large number of students makes Zlín
a university town full of young people.
