The key to contouring, especially for beginners, is that less is definitely more. It’s always easier to
reapply than it is to correct.
1. Always do your makeup in natural light to avoid overapplication.
2. Invest in a good bronzer that is going to make you look like a sun-kissed goddess as
opposed to just dirty and muddy.
3. The brush is twice as important—make sure it has the right tip to ensure a smooth and
precise line every time.
4. Don’t be afraid to hold a pencil at the angle you want to contour and sweep the brush
around it—even professionals need stencils.
If you want to look like you've come back from a month-long holiday in the Bahamas, take that
holiday. Fake tans are too tricky and volatile. You're more likely to look like an Orangutan. Worse,
you could get caught in the rain or it may start to bleed under the heat. Streaking orange is not a
good look, girl.
If you must fake a tan, the first step in achieving a natural glow is to get the preparation right.
1. Exfoliate your skin and remove all the dead cells that the fake tan could cling to and turn
patchy.
2. Invest in a good, hydrating moisturiser and cover those stubborn dry areas such as elbows,
knees, and ankles. This will help the tan glide on effortlessly and, just like before, not collect
in dry, dark patches.
3. Apply the tan up and down your body in circular motions using a tanning mitt—don’t forget
the mitt, otherwise, you will end up with tell-tale signs all over your palms.
4. And it goes without saying, don’t buy just any old tan—spend some time doing your
homework and finding a good self-tanner that will help you get the colour you want. Try an
instant, wash-off tan a few days before and see how you like the colour. Or, maybe opt for a
gradual tanner that you can monitor as you go along.
Lipstick Fails
Thanks (or, no thanks) to the rise of beauty bloggers and vloggers, we’ve all become a lot more
ambitious with our lipstick application these days. This means over-lining our lips to create the
illusion of a fuller pout; it also means experimenting with ombre lips where we use three or four
different shades of the same colour at one time. This is great in theory, but in practice, it’s a whole
different ball game.
1. Prepare the lips with a good moisturiser.
2. Line them well (this means outside the lip as well as on the actual lips themselves, as the
liner helps the lipstick, you know, stick).
3. Pop your finger inside your mouth after application to prevent it from transferring onto your
teeth.
We don’t even know where to start… we all want to make an effort with our hair and try something
different, but it’s so easy to get it wrong. Do you want to go for an effortless "I just threw my hair up
like this" style that won’t make your date feel like you’ve spent the entire day at the salon? Of
course, you do. And the messy bun is the perfect way to get that message across. Unfortunately, a
messy bun ends up being just that… messy. Disastrous, even.
Our suggestion? Give the hair some texture, as working with a smooth and straight head of hair is
inevitably going to be harder and flyaways will be your worst nightmare. The same goes for the
increasingly popular messy half up bun.
1. The trick here is to tame those stray hairs with a good gel or wax.
2. Finish off with a strong hairspray.
3. Use bobby pins smartly but sparingly to achieve your dream shape.
To get volume:
1. Prep the hair using all the right products first—volumising shampoos, conditioners, mousses,
the lot.
2. Don’t be afraid of a little teasing at the roots, but don’t go overboard.
3. You don’t need to spend money on a celebrity blow-out every time; blow dry your own hair
upside down and with the nozzle facing upwards as opposed to downwards.
Percy Reed Hairspray, £12; Aveda Pure Abundance Volumising hair spray, £16.50;
Percy Reed Shampoo, £14; Percy Reed Conditioner, £16;
Neal & Wlf Elevate Volumizing Lotion, £8.75;
Lanza Healing Style Sculpt Dry Clay, £18.95; Babyliss Curling Wand Pro Styler, £20
Smokey Raccoon Eyes
Smokey eye equals sexy eye, right? Well, yes, when it's done correctly. You need to blend, blend,
blend again, and blend ‘til you can blend no more. Then blend one last time, just for good
measure.
Also, invest in a good brush and smokey eye palette that's already packed with complementary
shades.
1. Don’t just go in with the black eyeshadow and hope for the best. Use other colours in the
inner and outer corners, and blend with a darker hue to create that perfect smoke.
2. Black liner, be it pencil or liquid, will help your smokey eye come to life.
3. Also, a powerful mascara is a good way to finish off.
4. Use a final spritz of setting spray to seal your hard work in place and you’re good to go!
