and high-perform<strong>in</strong>g German eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
is. Both modern, established enterprises and<br />
young, aspir<strong>in</strong>g companies – <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g several<br />
real »hidden champions« – represent <strong>the</strong> diversity<br />
of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong>, characterized<br />

biggest trade volume <strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong>. Products from<br />
Berl<strong>in</strong> are highly regarded <strong>in</strong>ternationally too.<br />
In 2016 Berl<strong>in</strong>’s mechanical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g companies<br />
recorded <strong>the</strong> highest export quota <strong>in</strong><br />
Eastern Germany, with more than 67 percent.<br />

There is hardly ano<strong>the</strong>r sector <strong>in</strong> which research<br />
and development are so pronounced. In<br />
a nationwide comparison, Berl<strong>in</strong> companies<br />
have even seen an above-average rise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
<strong>in</strong>novation activities over <strong>the</strong> last years.<br />
A recent study by <strong>the</strong> Technologiestiftung Berl<strong>in</strong><br />
shows that <strong>the</strong> revenue generated from new<br />
products <strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong> is well above <strong>the</strong> nationwide<br />
average. This highlights that Berl<strong>in</strong> is an attractive<br />
location for pioneer<strong>in</strong>g ideas, <strong>in</strong> particular<br />
with regard to <strong>the</strong> opportunity for <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
collaboration.<br />
Thereby <strong>the</strong> companies benefit from <strong>the</strong> tradition-steeped<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for eng<strong>in</strong>eers as well as<br />
<strong>the</strong> powerful academic and research landscape.<br />
