Hopedale Girl Scout Troop #71010
Earns Silver Award
Members of Cadette Troop
#71010 were awarded the Silver
Award this past week by
Girl Scouts of Central & Western
Massachusetts. The Silver
Award is the highest award a
Girl Scout Cadette can earn.
Each girl must complete the
“Amaze” Journey which was
about relationships , bullying
and socal media. They had to
also spend 50 hours on a service
project that helped solve
a problem in their community.
They faced challenges and certain
obstacles throughout the
project, but these girls showed
leadership, determination, organizational
skills and dedicated
themselves to help improve their
community.
Inspired by a sewing class
they took at Maria’s Sews
Alot, they brainstormed and
researched ideas for a community
service project where they
The Voice of Your Community
could use the sewing skills they
learned. They decided to teach
some “Home Economics”, a
course which is no longer a
course offered in the Hopedale
Schools.
They reached out to the Bancroft
Library’s children’s librarian
Elaine Kraimer to schedule
sewing workshops for girl scout
troops and young girls in the
community. The worshops included
instructions on how to
thread a machine and how to
make a pillowcase out of 1 yard
of fabric. Each girl in the troop
would bring their own sewing
machine and supplies to the li-
Pack 1 Hopedale recently
made a trip to Battleship Cove,
in Fall River, Massachusetts, to
explore the worlds’ largest collection
of historic U.S. naval ships.
After touring the battleship Massachusetts,
destroyer Joseph P.
Kennedy Jr., and PT Boats 617 &
796, the scouts, their parents, and
adult leaders spent the very chilly
night of March 11 on board
the famous USS Massachusetts.
Scouts from the Tiger, Wolf, Webelos
I, and Webelos II dens had
a great time exploring the ship
and experiencing history firsthand
including the opportunity
to sleep in authentic sailor’s quarters.
currently raising funds to donate
a sewing machine for members
of the library that would like to
continue to practice sewing .
Kelsey Grillo, Jaiden Miller
and Kayla O’Loughlin called
their project Pediatric Pillowcase
Project and donated the pillow
cases to the pediatric patients at
Milford Regional Hospital.
Alexandra McCall, Edda
Phillips & Vivian Staheli called
their project the Ledges Sewing
Project and donated the cases
to the residents of the Ledges in
Hopedale over the holidays. The
staff of the Ledges were very impressed
and requested another
project to make privacy catheter
bag covers for the residents who
travel in wheelchairs.
Their goal was to bring some
cheer and color into their hospital
and resident rooms.
Using an iPhone the group
worked together to direct and
film an instructional video showing
the steps to thread the machine
Lasers and the Eye
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Lasers can be very useful in treating
many eye problems. From helping
patients eliminate the need for
glasses to cosmetic procedures of
the eyelids, lasers have been very
valuable in performing bladeless eye
surgery while producing precise and
safe outcomes.
The world of eye surgery was
revolutionized when in 1946, a German
Ophthalmologist used the first
laser to treat the retina. Laser is light
amplified by stimulated emission of
radiation. This produces photons
acting in synchrony, with high power
and precision.
Health risks from the use of laser
pointers
Lasers can be very helpful as a
bladeless surgical device, but a note
of caution: Laser pointers in handheld,
pen-like devices that project
a beam of laser light are rapidly
replacing the traditional wooden
pointers used by lecturers during
presentations. However, these pointers
can be misused, for example, by
students in classrooms or by children
at home, and this has generated
safety concerns. There have been
reports of temporary blindness,
disorientation and headaches by
Cosmetic & Family Dentistry
Relaxed Friendly Atmosphere
Mother’s Day
Special
bus drivers, airline pilots, police and
teachers. Manufacturers are now
using similar low powered laser devices
in toys. Never look at a laser
pointer and never point it at someone.
Serious eye injury (sometimes
permanent) can result.
Laser use in Diabetes
In some cases of diabetic eye
disease, small blebs can form on the
blood vessels of the retina. These
can later cause bleeding and blurry
vision. An Argon Laser can be helpful
in treating these blebs. The same
laser can treat the entire retina in a
scatter fashion when more proliferation
of abnormal blood vessels is
noted.
Laser use in Glaucoma
The laser can be used in a focused
beam of light to treat the
drainage angle of the eye. This
surgery makes it easier for fluid to
flow out of the front part of the eye,
decreasing pressure in the eye. Two
types of laser eye surgery exist to
open up the drainage angle of the
eye: Argon laser trabeculoplasty and
selective laser trabeculoplasty.
Laser use in after cataract surgery
The lens capsule is the thin bag
that holds the intraocular lens implant
in position after cataract surgery.
This capsule becomes clouded
in about 25% of cataract surgery
patients. This causes blurry vision
and is also known as secondary
cataract. A YAG laser can create a
small opening in the center of the
capsule, allowing light to enter the
eye through a central clear area.
The procedure is painless, requires
no anesthesia, and has very little risk.
Laser use in Laser Vision Correction
An excimer laser can be used to
correct a variety of refractive errors
of the eye, from nearsightedness to
farsightedness and astigmatism. This
type of laser is extremely precise. It
creates targeted removal of tissue to
reshape the cornea, which reorients
the light in the correct place inside
the eye.
Laser use in cosmetic eye lid surgery
Eyelid surgery, also known
as blepharoplasty, is designed to rejuvenate
baggy or droopy eyelids
and to restore youthful eyes. The
laser provides excellent precision for
this procedure. Since the laser seals
small blood vessels, there is very little
bleeding during surgery. As a result,
bruising and swelling are kept to a
Laser use in Macular Degeneration
In selected cases of wet macular
degeneration, a photodynamic
procedure can be helpful: A laser
in combination of a light- sensitive
medicine target the abnormal bleeding
blood vessels to block them.
Laser use in cataract surgery
The laser has revolutionized
cataract surgery, allowing for a completely
blade-free procedure. In
addition to producing precise cuts
needed for surgery, the laser used
in bladeless cataract surgery breaks
up and softens the cloudy cataract
so there is less ultrasound needed to
remove the cataract. Less ultrasound
delivered inside the eye translates
into less energy used in the eye and
clearer corneas, which in turn help
producing better vision on the first
day after the surgery. The same laser
is able to treat astigmatism during
the cataract procedure, producing a
better chance for being glasses-free
after the surgery.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
we use state-of-the-art laser technology
to treat a variety of eye problems.
Dr. Kaldawy was the first to
offer bladeless laser cataract surgery
in the area and among the first in
New England. The top 5 eye hospitals
in the country offer bladeless
femtosecond laser cataract surgery.
We offer the same. We are proud to
bring this technology locally. Laser
technology can help us take care of
your eyes including no blade laser
cataract surgery. This technology is
now offered in our offices and closer
to home. For more details, see our ad
on the front page.

Its May Programming
Warm days and longer evenings! What could be better than that?
Beginning Birding: Wednesdays,
May 3, May 10, May 17,
and field trip May 20 from 6
to 7:30 p.m. Birding is one of
the fastest growing pastimes in
the U.S. Birds are spectacularly
beautiful and make for very interesting
subjects to study. Our
four primary objectives will be
to learn the skills to identify the
birds on sight, to recognize the
association between birds and
their preferred habitat, to hone
our skills of observation and finally
to learn to recognize birds
by their calls and songs. No experience
necessary, just a bit of
interest and enthusiasm. Each
evening class will start with a 30
– 40 minute birding session outside
in various habitats. A portion
of the final class will focus
on optics, guidebooks, and some
reliable birding destinations. Fee:
$60m/ $72nm
Tiny Trekkers: Saturdays,
4th Grade Boys
Basketball Finish the
Season Strong
The 4th grade boys basketball
team went 7-4 in the division
A league for their age
group. They finished 2nd in the
division, losing the league championship
game to eventual state
champion Sturbridge. After
the league championship game,
they went on to play in the State
Tournament in Foxboro, MA.
The boys finished 3rd, losing
their semi-final game by 1 point
to Bellingham. “The boys consistently
improved each week and
played as a team. They should
be extremely proud of their accomplishments
in their first season
of travel basketball,” boasts
Coach Grant Deppe. The team
is looking forward to next year!
Hopedale Girls Tennis Team Keeps Building Tradition
By KEN HAMWEY
Staff Sports Writer
The Hopedale High girls tennis
team knows how to get results.
Consider the last four years.
The Blue Raiders have won
the last three Dual Valley Conference
championships and have
captured the last two Central
Mass. titles. They’ve been to the
tournament four times and finished
as state runners-up the last
two years, bowing to Martha’s
Vineyard twice.
Last year, the girls finished
13-3 in the regular season, then
posted a 4-1 record in the playoffs,
ending the 2016 campaign
with a 17-4 overall record. What
was remarkable about those
numbers was the teams average
age. It was 14½ and yet the
girls came up one match shy of a
state crown.
Amy Wersted, who’s been the
Blue Raiders coach during this
dynamic four-year run, could be
directing another ultra-successful
squad because this season’s contingent
returns all of last year’s
players. And, even more amazing,
there are still no seniors on
the roster.
Youth usually translates to a
lack of experience but in Hopedale’s
case it’s a plus.
“We are young but we’ve
got players with tourney experience,’’
said Wersted, who works
as a tennis instructor. “Many of
our girls also play tennis out of
season.’’
This year’s team has an array
of other strengths. “We’re cohesive,’’
Wersted said. “Team
chemistry is fantastic and our
style is to play smart, intelligent
tennis. We don’t rely on power,
we stress good placement. The
girls also have talent, utilizing
drop shots and good top spin.
Our depth is another asset. We
have girls who’ve competed in
varsity matches as seventh and
eighth graders.’’
Consistency is a word Wersted
uses often and it’s an area
where she continually aims for
improvement. Another element
that she emphasizes is footwork.
“Footwork is very important,’’
she noted. “Players should always
be moving. I don’t want my
players competing as if they’re
stuck in cement.’’
This season, opponents will
discover they’re in for some
Hopedale coach Amy Wersted is flanked by her top singles players —
Jennie Holland, left, and Megan McLellan.
tough sledding when they face
Hopedale’s first and second singles
players. Sophomore Aimee
Figgins plays No. 1 and junior
Megan McLellan is in the second
slot. Both were DVC all-stars
last year and Figgins was voted
the circuit’s No. 1 singles players
while McLellan got the nod
for the No. 2 ranking. Figgins is
a four-year varsity player while
McLellan is a five-year veteran.
“Aimee is like a backboard,’’
said Wersted. “Whatever shots
come at her get returned. She’s
smart, covers the court well and
uses top spin. Her patience is excellent
and she’s got great mental
toughness.’’
McLellan is a co-captain and
Wersted not only likes her leadership
style, but also her ability.
“Megan has a very welcoming
style and she leads by example
and also by being vocal,’’ Wersted
said. “She’s another smart
player who competes very well
at the net. She’s patient and has
a winning mentality. She could
also play first singles.’’
Junior Brittany Dupuis, a
four-year veteran, will see action
at third singles. “Brittany is
consistent, good at the net and
has power,’’ Wersted said. “And,
she’s excellent at wearing down
her opponent and she could also
play second singles.
Junior co-captain Jennie
Holland and freshman Maddie
Laprade will compete at first
doubles. “Jennie is a perky and
spunky leader who keeps team
morale high,’’ Wersted emphasized.
“She’s phenomenal at the
net, uses power, has a great slice
serve and is a fine all-around
player. Maddie played volleyball
and she’s good a spiking the ball.
Her serve is excellent and at the
net she’s a force to be reckoned
with. She has a very calming disposition.’’
The second doubles
team will feature juniors Missy
Davis and Rachel Szemethy.
“Missy hits with power and is
an animal at the net,’’ Wersted
said. “Her serve is good and she’s
consistent. I like her encouraging
style as a double partner — she’s
always cheering her teammate.
Rachel is one of our most consistent
players. She’s got a great
back-hand, is a good net player,
and her reflexes are outstanding.’’
Wersted has depth at doubles
and can call on eight-grader
Katelynn Brunt, who competed
in four varsity matches last
year, or eighth-grader Madison
Deppe.
“Katelynn covers the court
very well and has great instincts,’’
Wersted said. “A finesse player,
her placements are good, she’s
consistent and she backs up her
partner very well.
Madison compiled a 4-0 record
as a seventh-grader last
year. She does what it takes to
win. She’s determined, consistent,
and very capable at returning
shots.’’
Wersted, whose Blue Raiders
were 2-0 at Local Town Pages
deadline, has some goals for the
season. She wants her players to
improve daily, play smart tennis
and improve on last year’s
record. As for winning another
DVC title and getting back to
the state tourney, she’s content
to focus on “smart tennis’’ that
hopefully will lead to another
Central Mass. crown. “We’ve
won two straight Central Mass.
championships and it would be
nice to make it three,’’ she said.
The Blue Raiders again are a
young squad that has depth and
experience on its side. Another
season of success likely will unfold
because the squad is focused,
committed and devoted to the
task at hand.

Sports
Hopedale Softball Poised for another Tournament Run
Over the past three years, the
Hopedale varsity softball team
has accumulated a standout
regular season record of 49-10
while consistently earning qualifying
bids to play in the Division
3 Central District Tournament.
Having made it to the Semi Final
round in the 2013 and 2014 seasons,
the Blue Raiders were finally
able to capture their first
District Title in nineteen years in
the 2015 season.
Last year, Hopedale recorded
another successful regular season
amassing a 16-3 record and
earning the top seed in the tournament.
However, a disappointing
loss in the first round ended
the season prematurely. Heading
into the 2017 season, Head
Coach Shanna Lathrop and this
year’s squad look to avenge that
tournament loss by putting together
another solid regular season
that gets them back into the
tournament for another run.
Hopedale only lost two girls
to graduation, so the team is in
a relatively good position coming
into the 2017 season. Returning
are last year’s battery mates of
senior pitcher Julia Alberto and
sophomore catcher Taylor Goldstein.
Alberto enters her second
year as the team’s starting pitcher
and one of the team’s captains,
while Goldstein takes her position
behind the plate with a year
of varsity experience now behind
her.
“Julia has a lot of different
pitches that keep hitters off balance;
it’s probably her biggest
asset,” the Lathrop said. “Taylor
calls most of the game herself
which is quite impressive for a
sophomore. I like to get involved
with the play calling, but being
the only coach there is so much
going on I can’t always do it so
having her there is great.”
The infield is led by Senior
captain Katie Koller who begins
her fourth year in the varsity
starting line-up and her third
year as the team’s third baseman.
Katie is recognized as being a
smart athlete whose play at the
hot corner is both solid and consistent.
At the plate, she does
a real good job of driving the
ball and moving runners along.
Koller also serves as the team’s
secondary pitcher.
Another senior captain who
Lathrop will look to help carry
the team is Jordan Wilson, who
is one of the team’s power hitters
having batted in the four and five
spots last season. She will be relied
upon to continue to provide
the team with extra base hits on
a regular basis.
The outfield is anchored by
returning center fielder Kathleen
Maloney who is quick and can
effectively read the ball off the
bat. At the plate, the sophomore
has the ability to play small ball,
but does possess power to hit the
ball. The rest of the outfield play
is made up of senior Julia Holt
and senior captain Catherine
Clement
Heading into the 2017 season,
Coach Lathrop sees her team
captains’ (Alberto, Koller, Wilson
and Clement) ability to deliver
their expertise on the field as
being the key to having another
successful campaign in a tough
Dual Valley Conference.
“Our main goal is to take
control of the league and capture
another title (Hopedale
won the Dual Valley Conference
Championship in 2015 and
tied with Nipmuc last year), said
Lathrop. “Once that is complete
we should be playing good ball
as we enter the tournament and
this year should be a different
outcome.”
Last spring after earning that
top seed in the Division 3 Central
Tournament Hopedale fell on
hard times mainly due to the fact
that the majority of the squad
didn’t have that tournament experience.
The only remaining
players from the 2015 District
Title team are Katie Koller and
Jordan Wilson.
“We’re still a young team, but
they have worked hard and dedicated
themselves to winning,” the
Lathrop said. “Last year we had
three freshman playing fulltime
with no real experience, this year
as sophomores they do which
puts us in a much better place.”
Hopedale is once again hoping
to have a successful campaign
within the DVC and ride that
wave into the tournament; this
year with a much better experience.
Hopedale 6th Grade Boys Earn a Spot In State
Small Town Tourneyment
Hopedale 6th Grade Boys
travel basketball team had another
stellar season. The team
finished the season with a record
of 9 wins and 2 losses and qualified
for the playoffs in highest division
in the league.
In the quarter finals of the
playoffs, Hopedale defeated an
up and coming team from Spencer.
Earlier in the season, Spencer
shocked our boys by handing
Hopedale only their third defeat
in two years of league play.
For the third year in a row,
our Hopedale Boys advanced
to the league championship
game. Hopedale has won it all
the past two seasons. Unfortunately,
Hopedale lost a hard
fought game against their arch
rivals from Douglas.
A second place finish earned
Hopedale one of six spots in
the State Small Town Tournament.
It wasn’t Hopedale’s
weekend. The competition was
of the highest caliber. Hopedale
played some very close games but
came up short.
It is a remarkable feat for
Hopedale, one of the smallest
towns in the state, to compete at
the highest level of youth basketball.
