Annual Report 2007: 

Thank you for helping make the Foundation’s 40th Anniversary year a memorable 

one. This past year we officially celebrated 40 years of “helping students to open doors 

to their futures with financial aid, scholarships and educational resources.” We celebrate 

40 years of individual, corporate, business and foundation commitments to our important 

mission. We are most grateful to each and every donor who has made this possible. 

During the past 12 months, we successfully completed our historic Community 

Investment Campaign. Not only did we meet our initial goal of $3 million, we exceeded 

it by more than $555,000! This was made possible by an amazing $1 million gift from 

The Robert Wood Johnson 1962 Charitable Trust. This two-part gift consisted of a 

$500,000 outright gift for student scholarships and a second $500,000 challenge. The 

Trust agreed to match all new gifts to the Campaign between October and the end 

of December 2006! This challenge empowered alumni, faculty, staff, and community 

supporters to make many new or additional Campaign commitments. We wish to 

express our sincere gratitude to the Johnson family for their generosity, leadership, 

vision and historic commitment to Middlesex County College and the Foundation. 

We have increased visibility of the Foundation’s mission via the web, print and 

digital media. Our redesigned Foundation web site received over 45,000 hits to date. 

Our site now includes a special “thank you” video to Johnson & Johnson for their 

historic support of the College and Foundation mission. Furthermore, our site provides 

prospective donors who have an interest in making a planned gift the information and 

tools necessary to help them decide which method best meets their personal financial 

and philanthropic goals. We are grateful to the members of our Legacy Society who 

have chosen to make major planned gift commitments to ensure the continuation and 

growth of the Foundation’s mission. To date, gifts of bequests, insurance, trusts and gift 

annuities promised to the Foundation total nearly $800,000. 

The Foundation’s mission became better known and supported as a result of the 

Community Investment Campaign. This year, we will be building on our success by 

using the tried and true methods that helped us surpass our campaign goal. You will 

begin to hear about our Annual Campaign, whose theme is “Empowering Dreams.” 

Our goal is to award 1,000 or more scholarships to deserving Middlesex County College 

students in perpetuity by the end of 2010. To do this we need to broaden the base of 

those who believe in our mission and will make annual gift commitments. If you are 

reading this annual report, it is likely that you are already an annual supporter. If so, 

you know the satisfaction that comes with helping our students achieve their academic

and career dreams. Thank you for your generosity. Middlesex County College offers its 

students a quality and affordable higher education. The Foundation and its supporters work 

to make it easier for deserving students to attend and complete their academic program or 

degree. 

Together we are making an amazing difference in the lives of Middlesex County 

College students. Together over the past 40 years, we have distributed $7,726,000 in 

scholarship awards to 10,772 deserving students. Together we have changed forever the 

lives of many students, 70% of whom were the first in their families to access a college 

education. None of this would have been achievable without the generous support of 

those corporations, foundations, businesses and individuals who have invested in their 

futures. Together we have changed their lives and that of their families while providing 

the communities in which they reside with a well educated and informed workforce and 

citizenry. Imagine what we can accomplish together over the next 40 years! Due to limited 

funds, only 60 percent of students who need financial assistance to attend Middlesex 

County College are able to receive it. There is so much more left for us to do together. 

Thanks for all you have done and will do in the future to help deserving Middlesex County 

College students reach their full potential.

We are proud to report that in our 40th Anniversary year, 2006/2007, Middlesex 

County College Foundation achieved unprecedented success. Our mission of “Helping 

students open doors to their futures with financial aid, scholarships and educational 

resources” was advanced via the strong finish of our Community Investment Campaign 

and the generosity of both new and loyal supporters. Together, these contributors have 

given generously to ensure deserving Middlesex County College students have the 

financial resources necessary to help achieve their academic goals. These donors are 

truly Empowering Dreams. 

Empowering Dreams at Middlesex County College speaks to the likelihood that a 

scholarship recipient may be the first in his family to access a college education. Having 

achieved a degree, these students will be more likely to send their own children to 

college. Empowering Dreams describes the effect of a scholarship for a single mother 

or as a career-changer working to improve his/her quality of life through education. It 

also describes the affect scholarship support has on students like Namema Amendi, 

an immigrant from Kenya. His dream was to come to the United States and receive 

a medical education in order to assist the many people he witnessed suffering from 

diseases like malaria, AIDS, and typhoid in the neighborhood of his youth. A Foundation 

scholarship helped him graduate with honors this past May. His Middlesex County 

College education helped him to qualify for another prestigious scholarship which is 

allowing him to continue as a pre-med student at Columbia this fall. By empowering 

his dreams, Foundation donors have created a ripple effect to strengthen the community 

as a whole. Imagine the many lives Namema will touch because he was, through the help 

of a Foundation scholarship, able to pursue his dream of a medical education. 

Between July 2006 and June 2007, 20 new named scholarships were established 

with the Foundation. This brings the total named scholarships to 90, representing the 

largest number of named scholarship funds among the 21 community colleges in 

New Jersey. The criteria used to select a recipient is as diverse as the College’s degree 

program and its student population. 

In addition to the named scholarship funds, (see list on next page) general 

contributions to the Foundation allow for additional scholarships to be awarded 

to the students with the greatest financial need. In all, more than 620 scholars had their 

dreams empowered through Foundation scholarship assistance in academic year 

2006 – 2007. But that’s not all —

General contributions and endowment earnings also allow the Foundation to fund 

key educational programs and benefit every single Middlesex County College student. 

In 2006 – 2007, Foundation grants supported a faculty lecture series, a special Library 

program for English as a Second Language, a pilot program using electronic portfolios 

to assess student progress, and the College Alumni Magazine, Middlesex Now.

The Foundation extends grateful appreciation to the benefactors listed in this 

report for significantly advancing our mission and making great things happen on campus 

during the past year. Some other highlights of the past year include: 

The annual Community Celebration, held October 5, 2006, hosted by the 

Foundation Board of Directors, recognized scholarship benefactors and major 

contributors. The Community Celebration is an opportunity for benefactors to meet and 

congratulate recipients and for recipients to thank their benefactors. Over 135 guests 

attended the 2006 event. During the evening, Campaign Co-Chairs, Gerald M. Ostrov 

and John V. Visceglia announced a $1 million commitment from the Robert Wood 

Johnson 1962 Charitable Trust to the Community Investment Campaign. 

The Trust’s gift consisted of two very important parts — $500,000 for general 

endowed scholarship support and a $500,000 dollar for dollar challenge for every 

new commitment made to the Campaign by December 31, 2006. 

Response to the Trust’s challenge was both enthusiastic and broad-based. As a 

result, the Community Investment Campaign exceeded its original $3 million goal by 

more than $555,000. More than 362 contributors from all segments of the community — 

individual supporters, college alumni, corporations, foundations, campus community 

and community organizations joined together to ensure a historic success. The 

Campaign came to an exciting close as scheduled on December 31, 2006. 

The success of the Community Investment Campaign also made it possible for 

the Foundation to provide grants to support important College programs that impact 

students. Beneficiaries of these grants totaling $500,000 include: faculty support, 

College Library, College Urban Centers in New Brunswick and Perth Amboy and 

Minority Student Affairs. 

A Campaign Victory Celebration was held on February 2, 2007. Contributors 

representing the entire community: alumni, board members, faculty, staff, corporations, 

foundations and friends joined to toast the Campaign’s success. Guests were greeted 

under a large “Thank You” banner to lavish hors d’oeuvres, decadent desserts, and 

champagne. Campaign Co-Chairman John V. Visceglia expressed his sincere appreciation 

to all whose generosity and efforts made this historic milestone possible. An added 

highlight of the evening was an exceptional art auction of works donated by Middlesex 

County College students, alumni and faculty. An original oil painting, commissioned by 

the Foundation to commemorate the Campaign, was presented to Middlesex County 

College President, Dr. Joann La Perla-Morales, in recognition of the nearly $100,000 in

the Campaign. Limited edition lithographs of the painting, signed and authenticated 

by artist Frank McGinley were presented to the Campaign’s leadership donors. 

Thank you to all who participated in the unprecedented success of the Campaign. 

Your support will be empowering dreams and providing resources to help Middlesex 

County College students for years to come. 

The success of the Community Investment Campaign will continue through a 

renewed emphasis on the Annual Campaign in the coming year. It is hoped that new 

supporters who were inspired to help our students during the campaign will continue 

to assist Middlesex County College students through regular annual gifts. A particular 

point of pride is the number of Alumni contributors who joined in the initiative. Their 

participation is a strong endorsement of the College’s success in providing a quality, 

accessible education to a diverse student body and to provide life long learning for the 

community. Alumni comprised the largest group of campaign donors, demonstrating 

their strong belief in alma mater. The Foundation continued to receive generous gifts 

to its Annual Campaign in 2006 – 2007. 

Foundation events add sparkle and enjoyment to our fund raising efforts each year. 

The 24th Annual Scholarship Golf Classic was held on September 18, 2006. More than 

85 golfers and luncheon guests enjoyed a beautiful day on the links. Contests provided 

great fun and impressive play throughout the day. The big winners were our students — 

more than $44,500 was raised. Chairman Brian Legg and a dedicated committee are 

already working to “Beat their Best” in 2007. A new venue, special prizes, new contests, 

and special recognition of an outstanding Foundation founder are planned for the 25th 

Anniversary Outing to be held on September 17, 2007 at Colonia Country Club. 

The 38th Annual Scholarship Ball was held at the County’s newest address for 

elegance in New Brunswick, The Heldrich, on April 28th. The Provident Bank Foundation 

received the evening’s award in recognition of their outstanding support of Middlesex 

students and quality education in the community. The Provident Bank Foundation, 

President Paul Pantozzi, surprised a delighted audience by announcing that The

Provident Bank Foundation would fund an additional scholarship in honor of 

John P. Mulkerin. Mr. Mulkerin is a member of both the College and the bank’s Board 

of Trustees and is former Chairman of the Middlesex County College Foundation. 

The impact of his personal leadership is evident at the Foundation and other worthy 

organizations he supports. This new endowed scholarship in his name will ensure that 

his legacy of support to deserving Middlesex County College students continues. 

While Ball guests danced the night away, they also anticipated the results of a 

diamond raffle and extensive selection of silent auction items. Event Chairperson, 

Barbara Bernard, was gracious in expressing her gratitude to all who assisted in 

creating a memorable evening. The Ball raised more than $142,000 in support of 

the Foundation’s mission. 

Corporate Mission Partners helped to ensure that Foundation initiatives start 

off on a successful track each year. These Partners provide early support for the Golf 

Classic, Scholarship Ball, Annual Campaign, and Community Celebration. Their pro-active 

leadership demonstrates a strong belief in our students and the Foundation’s ability 

to inspire the community to invest in helping students to achieve their academic and 

career goals. 

Henry David Thoreau stated, "If you have built castles in the air, your work is not 

lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." Foundation 

contributors give Middlesex County College students the resources needed to obtain 

a quality education. That education provides the foundation for their dreams. Thank you 

for your support during the past year. Thank you for your belief in our students’ abilities.

IN MEMORY 

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of two long-time 

Foundation leaders: Dr. Sidney Danzis and John C. Kenny. Dr. Sidney Danzis, husband 

of former Middlesex County College President Dr. Rose Channing, was founder and 

retired chairperson of Middlesex County College’s Dental Hygiene Program. John C. 

Kenny, husband of Ann Kenny, was a long time Middlesex County College Professor. 

Both men were active and inspirational Foundation Directors whose dedication to the 

futures of Middlesex County College students was always demonstrated through their 

words and actions. We will miss their wit and wisdom, leadership and service; but 

mostly the pleasure of their friendship. We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to 

their wives and their families.
