Many of our readers have expressed an
interest in knowing more about ‘Cruelty
Free Fashion’, so we did some research
and found that this issue is polarizing
the fashion industry.
Animal testing is a controversial safety
measure used by many manufacturers
of personal-care and household
products. The intent is to avoid injury to
humans (and the associated lawsuits) by
first testing the safety of new products
on animals. As a consequence, millions
of animals — usually rabbits, guinea pigs,
rats and mice — are forced to experience
experimental products in ways that
humans may use and misuse them. For
instance, to check for adverse reactions
to a new suntan lotion, a laboratory
technician might drip the lotion into a
rabbit's eyes or force the rabbit to ingest
the entire contents of a bottle of suntan
lotion, to simulate what a curious human
toddler might do. As part of the
experiments, most of the laboratory
animals are killed so that scientists can
study their internal organs to check for
the impact of a product's chemicals.

Super Girl
As one of our Feature Models For
February, Koa-Marie’s story helps
models realize that there really
are no limits to having a diverse
modeling/ entertainment resume.

We think it’s pretty special when a
person accomplishes many of their goals
by the age of 27; has taken chances and
created for herself a diverse,
entertainment resume. And being
beautiful and working out regularly
doesn’t hurt either. We found someone
that fits the bill, Koa-Marie Turner, and
asked her to tell us her story:
an African American family. It made me
feel very accomplished that they would
cast me despite the fact that I wasn't
African American; and being on stage,
live, in a full-length role was a great
experience!
I got married and had a beautiful
daughter, Shania-Kaylee. And I also
“I was born on Nov. 10, 1981 in
Binghamton, NY, but I moved to Chicago,
IL when I was 5 years old. I was a quiet,
and shy child, until the 4th grade when I
did my first play in school and the acting
bug bit me. My first role was the Queen
of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland and I
still remember walking around shouting
"off with there heads"! After that I
concentrated on acting. I took acting
lessons at the Illinois Theater Center with
Etel Billings for several years.
I began modeling at the age of 12. I
started by doing photo shoots and
competing in beauty pageants. I had
done quite a few by the time that I
graduated high school at the age of 16. I
was always a very determined person
and very much an overachiever.
After I graduated high school, I took
some time off before going to college. I
concentrated more on working out, and I
was still in front of a camera modeling. I
did two plays for TRT Productions and
one of those plays was with the African
Americans Speakers Association. It was
called ‘This Bitter Cup’ and I played
Laura. This part meant alot to me
because I played the daughter in law in
Lisa Sharpe
started college. I also have two sons,
Tristan and Keithan. I got divorced but
worked hard as a mom and a student and
graduated college with a 4.0 GPA with a
dual degree in theater and science. So
it’s clear that being a model does not
mean that you can’t be smart or have a
family! And conveying that message to
other models makes me feel good.
When I turned 25, I started to pick
everything back up – modeling and
acting – only this time I decided to start
wrestling as well. I grew up watching pro

them twice, once in LA and once in
Chicago. Some of the photos have
been released and some are still
waiting to be released. It was
professional and I am glad I did it.

wanted to be in the show! I trained as a
wrestler at Ohio Valley Wrestling in
Louisville, KY. I work for many leagues:
the Galli wrestling league,
Underground Wrestling,
CLPW Wrestling, Stars and
Stripes Wrestling and
Windy City Wrestling.I am
also pursuing a contract
with the WWE. I also
know the business side. I
can wrestle, referee, or
manage a wrestler
outside the ring.
I am now 27 and I have
accomplished quite a few
of my goals. I have also
been on the cover of 2
Wheel Tuner magazine.
And I even accomplished
my dream of posing for Playboy in 2008. I
sent in pics and the editor emailed me a
week later and asked me to go to a
casting call. So I signed up for the casting
call in Chicago. And I have now posed for

life and in my career I don't like to be put
in a box. I like to do or try anything that I
want to. I’ve done a wide variety of
modeling; Playboy, glamour, fashion,
runways, commercial, promos, trade
shows, editorial and fitness. If I have a
notion to do it, I will!

In acting, I have done all sorts
of things also! I have done
stage, commercials, TV pilots,
music videos. I even play two
characters (Daredolls)
regularly for DynaHunk
Productions. The show is

I play Minx and I have for over a
year now; and I play Pinx who
debuted in November 2008.
In the last two years I have
accomplished a lot. And I know it
is from not being in a box and
willing to try anything. I check
casting calls daily and apply to
those that interest me. I also
have a strong determination to
succeed in anything that I want
to do! I have become a firm
believer in the power of the
Secret and the Law of Attraction!
And that if you have a dream and
you believe that you can
accomplish that dream, despite
anything, then that is exactly
what you will do. Anyone can
accomplish anything they want if
they believe that they can.

Fortunately, I have very
supportive kids, family and
friends (especially my parents). I also remember to always be myself and you never
see me doing anything that I don't want to do or that I am not comfortable with. In
this business you should have a good head on your shoulders and know your
limitations. In all, it’s been great and I can’t wait to go for it again – to see what’s in
store for me in the future.

Chris Schortgen is
22 years old half
Japanese and half
Belgian-American.
He grew up in
virginia beach and
just graduated
from Virginia
Commonwealth
University with a
degree in
Homeland Security
and Emergency
Preparedness.
Chris was planning
working for the
government then
randomly got into
modeling and
figured it was a
great way to see
the world, meet
some new people
and do things he's
never done.
Simple. Look good,
take care of
yourself and start
modeling. What's
there not to like?
In the future, says
he'd love to get
into more
commercials and
maybe get into
acting. Why not? He would also love to travel and 'hit up' all the great surf spots the world has
got to offer. He would also like to try to get his music out there eventually and meet some guys
that want to jam out. For people like Chris, it seems easy. We'll see what happens this season and
let the journey begin.

Susan Cowles is
part of a photographic
team with her husband
Larry that makes up
Eastvale Photography. A
hobby turned business;
Susan went from
Amateur to Pro in 4
short years. She went to
a photographic
conference with her
husband, sat in on a few
Photoshop classes and
participated in a model shoot with a
borrowed camera. She was hooked.
Taking classes and graduating from Tri
Community Photo Center photography
became her life. While Eastvale
Photography does family portraits, seniors
and most of the other work done by a
studio, they specialize in Beauty Portraits
tending toward the high fashion side.
Susan says, “I still get a wave of excitement
every time I am about to perform my magic
and turn the lady next door into a beautiful
creature and I produce an image that she
wants to show to everyone she knows.”
She has developed a look and feel to her
photographs that draw customers to her by
word of mouth. Her scarf pictures have
developed into a sort of trademark image
that is done for every customer. Susan even
had one lady from North Carolina that was

give this a shot. I started to test with
different photographers in the city and I
quickly learned that I needed to loose
about 20lbs! I started working out and
from there I started shopping my book
around to the bigger agencies. To my
surprise, I got rejected from all of the top
agencies!! But I didn't let this discourage
me....I kept free-lancing with other smaller
agencies..and building my book and
getting work with them.
In 2007, my hard work was finally starting
to show more consistently. I started
booking nationwide commercials such as
Burlington Coat Factory and Van Heusen
and I did a Nike Campaign which
It all started back in 2005 when I
decided I wanted to venture off and try
something new. I was about to enter
my senior year of college at NCCU in
Durham, North Carolina, but in my
heart I had other dreams. Modeling
first started off as just an idea. Who
wouldn't want to get paid to take
pictures and travel?!? I started doing
my research and I learned that there is
so much more to modeling than that.
I moved to New York expecting to stay
for just that summer or maybe even a
semester, but I got picked up by R&L
Models and decided I should really

consisted of a commercial, a double page
spread in GQ magazine, and billboards in
South Africa and the UK. So far in my
career, I've done a lot of catalog work for
Macy's, Target, Sears, Kmart, I've appeared
on the Martha Stewart show, did an
editorial spread for DNR magazine, and a
Nivea ad just to name a few of my
accomplishments.
In March of 2008, I decided to walk into
Ford one day and got picked up on spot! I
signed with the Lifestyle division of Ford
Models. So far things are going great! I've
had a lot of direct bookings and done some
pretty amazing jobs.
In March of this year, I just launched my
own website www.modelclue.com, created
specifically to reach out to aspiring models,
photographers, makeup artist etc to allow
them to network with each other and learn
first hand the good and bad of the fashion
industry. My goal is to teach and inform
people on the things I wish I knew starting
out.
My advice to anyone wanting to get
involved in this industry would be to do
your research first! Study the game...know
your market. Keep at it no matter what
other people say...find out for yourself. And
always stay true to yourself..don't
compromise for NOTHING and don't settle
for anything. In this industry a lot of people
think models can be bought with a "price"
meaning compromising things that you
don't want to do just to get ahead. But at
the end of the day It's just not that serious!
Never sell yourself short....

‘Texas Girl’

Veronica Tharmalingam is the kind of person who
accomplishes things in a seemingly effortless fashion. She is a
natural beauty who is smart and insightful; and she has a
unique and, thankfully, unfinished story to tell.
Veronica was born in the southern part of India and is very
proud of her heritage. About India, Veronica says, “India is a
country where love is the essence of life. Its a place where you
can see people leading happy lives, despite their lack of means,
which I believe is due to their strong family values, and also
their spirit to live life to the fullest (carpe diem), on a daily basis
like tomorrow doesn't exist. I go there once a year. This is
almost a ritual because I have this need to restore myself at
least once a year in my homeland!”
She grew up in India until the age of 13, when she and her
mother and elder brother moved to France. Her mother and
father had become separated and her mother had always
wanted to live in Paris. While living in Paris and at the age of 14,
she had a ‘close
encounter’ with
Marcelo Rubi
the modeling world. One of her mom’s friends
wanted her to join their agency in Paris. Veronica
says she was not at all interested in becoming a
model at the time, so she refused.
Veronica’s dad is a mechanical engineer and
her mother runs a welfare association for women
and children; so it is no surprise that Veronica has
the right background and work ethic to be an
accomplished student. She received her Indian
baccalaureate (science specialization) before she
was 16 with an “A” average. She then entered
Toulouse University in southwest France to study
medicine. She wanted to move to Sydney Australia
to continue her studies there, so she took the
GMSAT exam (Australian entrance exam for
Medicine) and was the youngest candidate of that
year's batch. After passing the exam, she moved
back to Paris for work.
As Veronica was interviewing, she was spotted
in the street by a model scout. She was still not
interested but realized that this was a fast way to

gain money for her studies, so she
accepted. Her initial aim was to
pay off her bills, help her family
and finance her studies, Soon,
Veronica started to truly enjoy
modeling and felt very lucky to
work with great people, without
falling into some of the traps
young models encounter!
In the beginning, she
worked mostly for local emerging
fashion designers, then she started
to do ads for brands like DDP

street wear, Adidas, L'Oreal, Wella, Schwarzkopf,
Morgan,Diesel, etc. As a model, Veronica has
worked mostly in Europe (France, Belgium, Sweden,
UK, Spain) and India.
Most models would relish the opportunity for
work, internationally, for major clients. But for
Veronica this was just a beginning. While modeling,
again she was spotted on the street, but this time by
the President of the Miss Asia France committee who
stopped her and asked if she would like to participate
in a beauty contest. The goal was to elect a female
model to represent Asian culture and diversity in
France. Veronica says, “I thought it could be fun, so I
participated along with 300 other girls from all over
France. I enjoyed the contest, but did not take part to
win. I took part for the new experience, which was a
shift from my modeling work. Imagine my surprise
when the judges announced me as the winner of the
crown!”
“During my tenure, I represented Asia in France
in different events, one of which was to co-present
the opening ceremony of The Asian Film Festival with
the Mayor of Deauville (western coast of France,
town which also holds the annual American Film
Festival). I was subsequently contacted through my
website www.veronica.book.fr by the leading
supermarket retailer in France with a peculiar
request: They wanted me to participate in Tour de
France, for which they were a major sponsor. I was

Paris (Forum des Halles).
Modeling was taking up a lot of
time and so Veronica decided to
transfer out of Medicine. She was in
contact with two girl friends who
wanted to start a girls band. Veronica
liked the idea of being able to apply
my traditional values in a more
modern format, so she agreed.
Veronica connected the girls with a
producer she knew. Veronica says “He
loved the idea and added another
member to complete our band: that's
how Texas Girls (a mix between the
Spice Girls and the Pussycat Dolls)
was born - a blond, a brunet, a red
head and an Indian! We signed with
EMI and recorded our first single,
which reached the top 50 French
very surprised by the request, because they never hired
dark-skinned models. They explained to me that they were
trying to reach out to 'contemporary France''. I accepted.
I was the first person from India to do it! The adventure
lasted a month and during which I was on prime-time TV
every evening giving out the
winning jersey to the best
climbers of that day's event.
It was great!”
After Veronica’s tenure
as Miss Asia France, she
returned to full-time
modeling. She was featured
at 2008 Paris Fashion Week,
as well as worked on some
ads for international and
local magazines like Elle,
Miss Ebene, Lady Caprice
and others. Recently, she
was featured in a photo
exhibition in Paris called

charts. We also did several gigs in France, local TV shows,
and had interviews by magazines like FHM and Public. We
are now recording our second single!
And Veronica is by no means finished! She’s currently
working on multiple projects, continuing modeling and will
featured in next month's issue of Marie Claire. She was also
chosen to do a French feature length film this summer. She
is also applying her experience in beauty contests and
modeling as the coach for the participants of this year's
Miss India France. Her objectives are to do more acting,
and she is looking for opportunities and representation in
the USA where she believes there is a bigger market for
ethnic models.
We think Veronica has got what it takes and that she’s
going to be a valuable model that clients will want when
she comes to the states!
