Hali'a Aloha
2016-2017
University of
Hawai’i at Hilo
Todd Shumway
Jim Mellon
As we look back over a year full of adventure, excitement, and new
friends, I want to congratulate all of you for having the courage, energy,
and adventurous spirit to leave the comforts of home behind for a
year in paradise. Paradise turned out to be a quiet, wet, little town in
the middle of the ocean, but I hope Hilo’s unique environment helped
you improve your English, pick up new skills, make lasting friends,
and learn about yourself. A year spent living abroad will enrich you
for the rest of your life and leave memories that will stay with you like
no others.
I speak for all of us at the Center for Global Education and Exchange
in saying we appreciate having been part of this memorable
experience. Your enthusiasm for your new life in Hilo kept us excited
about our work, and the time that we spent with you on excursions,
in our office, and on campus was always interesting and memorable.
So I have one request. When you return home, take some of the aloha
spirit you found in Hawaii and share it ...
and as you share your aloha, remember us
in Hilo.
Aloha and a hui hou (until we meet again),

Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area is a large park and sandy beach on the Big
Island of Hawaii. The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is also located adjacent to the beach. Hāpuna
(literally, “spring” or “pool” in Hawaiian) is popular with residents and visitors. This is one of a few other
white sand beaches on the west coast of the Big Island. The few others include Kua Bay (Manini’owali
Beach), Kauna’oa Bay, known as Mauna Kea Beach, and Samuel M. Spencer Beach Park. It was named
the Best Beach in America by Florida International University professor Stephen Leatherman, known
as “Dr Beach”, in 1993.
By Alan L
Mauna Kea (traditional Hawaiian name:
Mauna a Wākea) is a dormant volcano on the
island of Hawaii. Standing 4,205 m (13,796 ft)
above sea level, its peak is the highest point
in the U.S. state of Hawaii. Further, because
the Hawaiian Islands slope so deep into the
sea, Mauna Kea is exceptionally prominent,
with a dry prominence calculated at 9,330 m
(30,610 ft). It is cupped by the deep Hawaiian
Trough, which has led some
authorities to call it the tallest (as opposed to
highest) mountain in the world, as measured
from base to peak.
Ancient Hawaiians living on the slopes of
Mauna Kea relied on its extensive forests for
food, and quarried the dense volcano-glacial
basalts on its flanks for tool production.
With its high altitude, dry environment, and
stable airflow, Mauna Kea’s summit is one of
the best sites in the world for astronomical
observation, and one of the most
controversial.
In Hawaiian mythology, Poli’ahu is one of the four goddesses
of snow, all enemies of Pele. She was thought to reside on
Mauna Kea, which if measured from the seafloor is the world's
tallest mountain.
The summits of the five volcanoes of Hawaii are
revered as sacred mountains; and Mauna Kea’s
summit, the highest, is the most sacred. For this
reason, a kapu (ancient Hawaiian law) restricted
visitor rights to high-ranking tribal chiefs.
Hawaiians associated elements of their
natural environment with particular deities. In
Hawaiian mythology, the sky father Wākea
marries the earth mother Papa, giving birth to
the Hawaiian Islands. In many of these
genealogical myths, Mauna Kea is portrayed as
the pair’s first-born son. The summit of Mauna
Kea was seen as the “region of the gods”, a place
where benevolent spirits reside. Poli’ahu, deity
of snow, also resides there. In Hawaiian, Mauna
Kea means “white mountain”, a reference to its
summit, which is usually snow-capped in winter.
The mountain’s name has been shortened from
it’s original, traditional Hawaiian name: Mauna a
Wākea (“Mountain of Wākea”).
Kua Bay - Manini’owali Beach
Manini’owali Beach at Kua Bay, part of Kekaha
Kai State Park, is another of the very pretty
Hawaii Big Island beaches, with fine white
sand that slopes gently to the beautiful clear
turquoise water. The swimming here is
awesome when the ocean is calm, and there
can be some decent snorkeling along the
rocky outcroppings at either end of the beach.
Hina
Hina is mostly
described as a very
attractive, smart,
beautiful, determined
young woman pursued by
men and other creatures.
Hina becomes tired of
living in the crowd, flees
to the moon, and eventually
becomes goddess of
it.
Waiānuenue
Rainbow (Waiānuenue) Falls is a waterfall located in Hilo, Hawaii. It is 80 ft (24 m) tall and almost 100
ft (30 m) in diameter. The falls are part of the Hawai’i State Parks.
Known in the Hawaiian language as Waiānuenue (literally “rainbow water”),the falls flows over a
natural lava cave, the mythological home to Hina, an ancient Hawaiian goddess. Rainbow Falls
derives its name from the fact that, on sunny mornings around 10AM, rainbows can be seen in the
mist thrown up by the waterfall.
Akaka Falls, a 422 feet (129 m) tall waterfall. Akaka in the
Hawaiian language means “A rent, split, chink, separation; to
crack, split, scale”. Local folklore describes a stone here called
Pōhaku a Pele that, when struck by a branch of lehua āpane,
will call the sky to darken and rain to fall. Lehua āpane or ōhia
āpane is an ōhia tree (Metrosideros polymorpha) with dark red
blossoms. Akaka Falls is located on Kolekole Stream. A large
stone in the stream about 70 feet (21 m) upstream of the falls
is called Pōhaku o Kāloa.
Kealakekua Bay is located on the Kona coast of the island
of Hawai’i about 12 miles (19 km) south of Kailua-Kona. Settled
over a thousand years ago, the surrounding area contains many
archeological and historical sites such as religious temples, and
was listed in the National Register of Historic Places listings on the
island of Hawaii in 1973 as the Kealakekua Bay Historical District.
The bay is a marine life conservation district, a popular destination
for kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling.
Kīlauea is a currently hyperactive shield volcano in the Hawaiian
Islands, and the most active of the five volcanoes that together
form the island of Hawai’i, and, perhaps, the most active volcano
on earth. Kīlauea means “spewing” or “much spreading” in the
Hawaiian language, referring to its frequent outpouring of lava.
Historically, the five volcanoes on the island were considered s
acred by the Hawaiian people, and in Hawaiian mythology
Kīlauea’s Halemaumau Crater served as the body and home of Pele,
goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes.
