Litynski to showcase all she can be at West Point

Drew Litynski’s track and
field career has turned from
“just for fun” to Division I.
When the senior jumper
joined the Porters track team
last year, she was simply trying
something new. Little did
she know a year later, she
would be signing her National
Letter of Intent with West
Point, Army. In fact, this time
last year, Division I was an
unfamiliar term to her.
“It’s a big step into competing
DI,” she said. “I didn’t
even know what DI was until
last year, so it’s really awesome.
I definitely was thinking
about — before I thought
about college — going into
the military. West Point is the
perfect combination.”
While Litynski’s progress
might seem like quite the
leap, she has shown talent
from the very start.
The seasoned cheerleader
was already well-versed in the
art of jumping — but vertically,
not horizontal. When she
joined the Porters, she decided
to test her skills in the long
jump, but before long assistant
coach Regan Cronholm
suggested the triple jump.
“I was like, ‘What is that?
I don’t think I can do that.’
I tried it one day, and I just
fell in love with it,” Litynski
said. “It’s fun. It’s hard on
your body, but it’s fun.”
Though she started the
2016 season on JV, Litynski’s
consistent top finishes
quickly bumped her up to
varsity, and she continued to
flourish. She finished third in
conference, fifth at sectionals
and 11th at the Illinois
High School Association
Class 3A Finals, hitting a
personal-best distance of 37
feet, 6.5 inches.
Litynski picked up right
where she left off this year,
recording three first-place
finishes through the indoor
and young outdoor seasons.
She reached new heights at
the conference indoor meet
March 18, hitting a personal-best
distance of 37 feet,
7 inches to finish second.
The senior leaper has two
first-place finishes to start
the outdoor season, the most
recent coming April 15 at the
Argo Girls Invitational.
“What I’m most proud
of is how far she’s come
in such a short amount of
time,” Lockport coach Joe
Kravitz said. “I’m glad she
has this opportunity, and
having track be the source of
that is [awesome].”
