and that led to my big break," he recalls. Registering some success after obtaining professionals to help him with messaging and imaging to appropriate audiences and the market, Ganje aimed at continual improvement. And then the sighting of a Hummer: "A conversation with a friend about breaking into the cash loan business led to whom I could approach as an investor,” he explains. “There was a yellow Hummer H2 about town and I inquired about who owned it. I finally landed on Jagdish Shah's doorstep. He listened but was not much interested. Even so, he gave me something greater than investment - mentorship." Shah is the miracle mogul who came from India in 1993 and set up Botswana’s biggest distribution company, CA Sales and Distribution, that employs over 1 000 people. According to Investor Magazine, his web of investments range from properties, IT businesses and dividend income to advertising, health and fitness and other private businesses. It is said the tycoon’s investments are so vast and diverse that it is difficult to determine his net worth. It is this man who took Ganje by the hand to show him the way. "I never asked for money,” says Ganje. “Just guidance. And that created mutual respect that is now 10 years strong. Jagdish is quite a generous man with his time. Despite being my mentor, he only became a shareholder in H&G much later." The magic formula of Ganje and the man increasingly known as ‘The Shah’ has seen H&G become an African multinational with a presence in the continent’s leading economies of South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, as well as in Zambia. “We will continue to grow our footprint," Ganje says with a quiet confidence. "We are the only indigenous ad agency that is growing at this rate and we intend to become the leading player wherever we go.” To that end, H&G will take advantage of existing synergies in certain countries. The company is on the verge of concluding a deal to acquire a Kenyan ad agency that has operations in five other countries along the Horn of Africa. Ganje enthuses: “I’m very excited about this Kenya deal because it will enable us to become probably the largest advertising agency on the continent.” The brands under H&G care are among the largest on the continent and beyond. These include ubiquitous names like Coca-Cola, Unilever, Emirates and Samsung. “Shoprite, who were my first client when the business started, continue to be with us in our African odyssey,” he says. But what is the future of advertising in Africa? “Digital technology,” the answer comes like a reflex. “Print is not dead yet; not in Africa. But the superhighway of digital technology lies ahead and is beckoning. Africa cannot afford to ignore the rise of digital marketing. That is why we have invested in a digital agency in Pretoria, South Africa.” He answers a question about his advice to budding entrepreneurs in a manner that reveals the awe with which he regards Shah. “Be in good company,” he says in clear reference to his mentor. “It is important to remember that passion alone will not carry your dreams. In my evolution as an entrepreneur, I have ensured that I’m never the smartest person in the room. Passion has to be matched with knowledge and skill. That is why I get the best accountants and the best HR people, among others.” But he warns against the blunder of asking mentors for money: “This is a grave mistake that a lot of young people make,” says Ganje. “Your mentor is there to guide you and not to give you money. It discourages successful people to mentor others when mentors are asked to invest in the business. Let that happen by itself.” He reveals that he has his sights trained on technology as his target for diversification because “technology is the next frontier of growth”. That is where I’m looking to increasingly invest.” But what is the aim in end? “In my view, money is no longer of such importance,” says Ganje, now a philosopher. “I have all I need: I have food to eat, clothes to wear, a house to live in. I’m okay. My ambition is not be a billionaire or anything like that. My purpose is to make an impact.” 14 www.inbusiness.co.bw | Issue 12 | 2017

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE A Degree in Information Technology or its equivalence. 5 years hands on experience. Must have knowledge on various software applications, serves and operating systems.
