SIMPLY SALAD FUSEABLES
(FUSEABLE VEGETABLES )
Creating “Fuseables” is a recent technology where
several different varieties and/or species are ‘moulded’
together into one ‘pellet’ resembling a large seed. This
pellet may contain 3 to 5 seeds ( in some cases more).
There are currently two types of pellets, one pellet
is formed with a very fine clay (like talcum powder)
and you can’t actually see the seeds, the other pellets
use a slightly different compound in which you can
often see some of the seed. Both pellets achieve the
same result – a fantastic and unique ‘fusion of foliage’
of the different plants as the seeds germinate and
begin to grow. This uniqueness cannot be achieved
by transplanting individual varieties. It is important to
keep the seed raising media well watered to allow the
pellet coating to break down.
SIMPLY SALAD FUSEABLES
Supplied as multi-species, multi-pellet with 3 or more
seedlings per pellet. Can be grown in 10-15cm pots and
bowls. Easy to produce with a very quick crop time.
Multi-pellets are efficient to sow in plugs or direct to the
final container, ensuring a well-balanced mix with one
sowing. Sowing directly into the final container can cut
a week or more off the crop time. Plug crop time: 2 to 3
weeks. Plug to finish: 2 to 4 weeks. Height: 30cm.
that the Babyleaf version only needs to be blanched for
sweeter taste than its larger counterpart. There is a lot
What is the difference between “Determinate” and
“Indeterminate” tomatoes?
Determinate varieties of tomatoes, also called “bush”
tomatoes, are varieties that are bred to grow to a
compact height (approx 1 metre). They stop growing
when fruit sets on the terminal or top bud and ripen
all their crop at, or near, the same time (usually over
a 2 week period), and then die. They may require a
limited amount of caging and/or staking for support.
Determinate varieties should NOT be pruned or have
laterals removed, as this severely reduces the crop.
Indeterminate varieties of tomatoes are also called
“Vining” tomatoes. They will grow and produce fruit
until killed by frost and can reach heights of up to
2 metres. They will bloom, set new fruit and ripen
fruit all at the same time throughout the growing
season. They require substantial caging and/or staking
for support. Pruning and the removal of laterals is
practiced by many, but is not mandatory. Due to the
need for substantial support and the size of the plants,
Indeterminate varieties are not usually recommended
as container plants.
TOMATOES [DETERMINATE = DWARF]
Approx seeds per gram 250-300
ENTERPRISE Maturity 75 days. Fruit globe shaped;
TOMATOES HEIRLOOM (Solanum lycopersicon)
Approx seeds per gram 250-300
The definition of the use of the word heirloom to
describe plants is highly debated. One school of
thought places an age or date point on the cultivars.
For instance, one school says that the seeds must be
over 100 years old, others 50 years, and others prefer
the date of 1945 which marks the end of World War II
and roughly the beginning of widespread hybrid use by
growers and seed companies or industrial agriculture.
Another way of defining heirloom cultivars is to use the
definition of the word “heirloom” in its truest sense.
Under interpretation, a true heirloom is a cultivar that
has been nurtured, selected, and handed down from
one family member to another for many generations.
Heirloom Marriage
We have heard many comments that Heirloom varieties
have better flavour. While this can be debated, what
cannot be debated is that generally Heirloom varieties
offer poor vigour, poor disease resistance and poor
yields compared to F1 Hybrid Tomatoes. There is
nothing “bad” about an F1 Hybrid, they simply have
controlled cross of pollen from one parent to another
(ie the bee basically gets replaced by a paint brush!).
The Heirloom Marriage varieties are a match made in
Tomato Heaven! – a cross between two Heirlooms to
create a tomato that is much higher yielding and earlier
maturing than their Heirloom parents. They keep all
their flavour and have fewer blemishes!
Some say “One of the best flavoured black tomatoes in
the world!” Fruits turn an “almost” black colour when
ripe. Descriptions such as “they look almost rotten”
and “elegant” have been used to describe Black Krim.
Regardless of how it looks, people do agree that it has a
slightly smoky, sweet taste, totally unique to the variety.
Indeterminate.
HEIRLOOM RED PEAR
Like Yellow Pear (listed below) except, as its name
suggests… its red! Plants like to spread out.
HEIRLOOM SAN MARZANO TALL
Used by the experts for pasta sauces and juices. The
fruit is much earlier and more productive than other
open pollinated varieties. San Marzano also has less
seeds than other Italian tomato varieties.
HEIRLOOM YELLOW PEAR
Everyone will love this late 1800’s variety. The mildflavoured
fruit hangs in clusters like grapes. Sweet and
low in acid. Great for adding colour and unusual shade
DORMANCIES
Some seeds contain dormancies which inhibit
germination. The process we recommend to overcome
these dormancies is listed in our catalogue as
“Germination Method”. To encourage even and rapid
germination we recommend this treatment is carried
out prior to sowing.
SYMBOL
DS
FS
MS
S
SW
HW
KEY TO GERMINATION
METHOD (SEED TREATMENT)
Sow seed direct from packet and keep
moist until germinated.
Fresh seed – sow on receipt. Seed
marked FS cannot be stored, it must be
sown on receipt.
Seed marked MS is perishable and
cannot be dry stored. After collection
and cleaning we place seed in cold
moist storage and dispatch packed in
moist sawdust. On receipt of this seed
it should be placed in cold stratification
until spring when it will be ready to
plant. Seed received after spring should
be sown on receipt.
Cold stratify for number of days
specified (eg S 28 = Stratify for 28 days).
Water soak overnight, spread seed
between layers of wet absorbent paper,
seal in a plastic bag with plenty of air
space. Keep moist in refrigerator at 2-5°C
for 28 days.
Warm stratify for number of days
specified. Prepare seed as for cold
stratification but keep moist at 20-30°C
Pour boiling water over seed, leave to
cool and soak for 24 hours. Sow the seed
that has swollen. Repeat the process for
the remaining seed. Some species with
very hard seed coats may require several
treatments before they will respond.
Scarification with sandpaper before
treatment may be beneficial in speeding
up the process in some species.
All cultural and descriptive information, advice and
recommendations are given as a general guide only.
If there is any doubt about a method, please contact
Egmont Seeds for further assistance.
CULTURE GUIDE – GROWING INFORMATION
We endeavour to advise where we can, the cultural
information in relation to our seed lines offered,
however sometimes it is just not possible. For those
items that do have this information, it is listed in the
table at the beginning of the species. Below is the detail
for each germination number method that is mentioned
throughout the catalogue. This information is offered
as a guide only, if you have success using a variation
to the information provided, obviously common sense
should prevail..... If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it!
GERMINATION METHODS
Seeds that require light to germinate –
Apply a light sprinkle of fine vermiculite to
maintain a uniform moisture level. (Vermiculite
allows the light to penetrate). Wet media prior
to seeding as this helps avoid washing fine
seeds down into the media.
Seeds that require dark to germinate –
These seeds should be covered by a mixture
of fine vermiculite and germination media. The
cover should be the approximate diameter
of the seed. Once 60-70% of the seeds have
germinated, place in light to avoid stretching
the seedlings.
Seeds requiring a light cover, or no specific
treatment – Sow seeds as close to the surface
of the media as possible. Lightly cover the
seeds with fine vermiculite to maintain a
uniform moisture level.
Seeds that require cold to germinate – Sow
seeds and place in a germination chamber
between 18-22°C for 14-21 days. Reduce the
temperature to between 0-4°C for 21-35 days.
After chilling time, increase the temperature to
between 16-20°C to complete germination.
Seeds that require pre-soaking to
germinate – Soak seeds in luke warm water
for 24 hours before sowing. Change water
often to remove toxins. Cover the seeds with
germination media and fine vermiculite.
Primula acaulis – Primula elatior – Primula
vulgaris (Primula / Polyanthus) – Sow
seeds and place in a germination chamber
between 18-20°C for 20-28 days. Later reduce
temperature to 16-17°C to prevent stretching
in the seed tray. Primula are very sensitive to
moisture stress. Keep media moist to the touch
but not saturated.
