Editor’s Letter 

Celebrating our 100th issue! 

Hello! Welcome to the February 

half term edition of Primary Times 

in Essex. Whilst still enjoying being 

cosy inside, there is no doubt now 

that the days are drawing out and 

the sun is shining just a little more brightly. 

The outdoors is beckoning and our thoughts 

are turning to what to do and where to go. We’ve 

found lots of fabulous ideas for things to do with your family, 

both during half term as well in the weeks leading up to Easter. 

The Primary Times Star Awards have been presented to the 

worthy winners - thank you to all our many readers who voted. 

Essex is full of an amazing breadth of places to visit, it is a great 

place to live and work and bring up a family. See page 6 for the 

results and inspiration for a day out with your children. 

It is also something of a tradition that in February we publish 

our ‘Pull-Out Party Guide’. Whenever your child’s birthday is in the 

year, keep hold of this magazine and refer back to it when you 

are looking for inspiration and something a little bit different to 

mark your celebration. 

We have our own celebration this issue – it’s our 100th issue! 

Back in the summer of 2000, we decided to set up a magazine 

from the family farm near Braintree in the heart of rural Essex. The 

idea was to produce a free publication, made available through 

schools and libraries which would give parents of primary school 

children information on ‘what’s on, where to go’ in Essex. 

17 years and 100 issues on, the magazine has grown 

massively. Schools from every corner of Essex now receive and 

distribute Primary Times seven times a year. Our own children 

grew up with the magazine and it was very much part of school 

life seeing Primary Times coming home in the book bag before 

each holiday. 

We know that Primary Times is enjoyed and referred to again 

and again and we get a lot of great feedback from our readers. 

We would like to thank the hard-working staff at all our schools 

throughout Essex who make sure that the magazine gets home to 

the parents and carers. 

Our next issue is out 20th March in 

schools and libraries throughout Essex.

An Essex Big Weekend in store for 2017! 

– Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd April 

Visit Essex is getting county-wide tourism businesses to donate FREE tickets as 

part of this year’s English Tourism Week celebrations, and will launch the first ever 

Essex BIG Weekend! 

Essex has some amazing things to see and do, and hundreds of free tickets to 

attractions will be available to the county’s residents via an online ballot, which will 

open on 16th February and close on 10th March 2017. Every resident aged over 

18 can apply for up to two tickets for their chosen attraction. Attractions that are 

already free to enter will be offering a range of extras such as refreshments and

Could you design a maize maze? 

The Original Great Maze is looking forward 

to another aMAZing summer season, but 

this year they are asking Essex primary 

school children to get involved. The Maze 

Master, PJ Carter, is on a hunt of his own, 

searching for a design that can be used 

for the 2017 maize maze at Blake House 

Craft Centre, near Braintree. 

The winning entry will receive £50, 

plus £100 for their school and free entry 

to the maze for their class! All you need 

to do is submit a clear, monochrome 

line drawing of an image that you think 

represents rural farming life, drawn onto 

A4 landscape paper. The closing date is 

Friday 31st March 2017. 

PJ says: “The Maze has proved to be 

popular with many people travelling long 

distances every year to ‘get lost’. I will 

make the winning design into a new 

challenge for you to walk and solve. Come

Jump Street is now in 

Colchester AND Chelmsford! 

In addition to Jump Street Colchester, there is now also 

Jump Street Chelmsford, a new 64,000 square foot 

trampoline park on the Dukes Park estate in Chelmsford, 

which triumphantly opened to the public in December. 

Jump Street Chelmsford offers one of the world’s 

largest Clip’n Climb centres, containing over 30 different 

climbs including three Extreme Challenges: ‘Vertical Drop 

Slide’, ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Leap of Faith’. Plus, two 

trampoline dodgeball courts, a wipeout machine, Olympic 

trampolines with a dedicated area for trampoline tuition, 

a slam dunk area, a giant inflatable bag with two runway 

trampolines and an enormous free jump area. Plus, a 

Ninja Warrior course will open imminently. 

Both parks offer a range of activities and events for 

all ages throughout the school holidays and half term,

Both the Chelmsford and Colchester parks offer Jump 

Tots sessions for under-fives, birthday parties, dodgeball 

tournaments, themed nights and a range of fitness 

classes, although there is a reduced timetable during the

Get involved in 

British Science Week: 

10th-19th March 2017 

If you’re looking for innovative ways to 

educate and inspire children, look no 

further than British Science Week (BSW). 

Run by the British Science Association 

(BSA), it’s a national celebration of 

science, technology, engineering and 

maths - featuring events and activities 

across the UK which anyone can attend. 

Primary schools, children and families 

are an important part of BSW. There 

are free activity packs full of inspiring 

ideas for the classroom or at home. 

The theme for this year is “Change”, 

encouraging young people to investigate 

changes happening in the world 

around us and the changes they can 

make to have a positive impact on 

the future. The primary school pack 

contains lots of engaging activities and 

can be downloaded from the website. 

Pupils can also enter the annual poster 

competition. New for primary schools 

in 2017 is Demo Day on 16th March, 

which aims to inspire teachers and 

technicians to explore new concepts, 

provoke discussions and generate 

excitement with science demonstrations.

I spy the 

first signs of 

Spring! 

We all know that fresh air is important 

and associated with so many health 

benefits; from helping provide a daily 

dosage of vitamin D, which helps assist in bone 

strength, to the exercise of playing outdoors 

helping to ward off obesity. And sometimes, a 

good blast of fresh air is just perfect to magic 

away the winter blues! 

Despite knowing the science of what’s best for 

us, sometimes we need that little gentle push 

to help us leave the comfort of the couch. 

This time of year is particularly exciting with the 

end of winter in sight and each day bringing 

new signs that spring is just around the corner. 

You may be lucky, and not even need to move 

from your bed to hear one of the first signs of 

spring. In February, as the days start to get 

longer, you’ll start to notice the increasing 

chorus of bird song at dawn with the robin, 

song thrush, blackbird, and great tits being 

some of the first birds to welcome in the 

spring. Natural food supplies may still be short 

for birds so putting out fat balls for the garden 

birds is still important. As male birds start to 

mark their territory ready for mating and 

nesting, February is a perfect time of year to 

put up nesting boxes in your garden. 

For other sights of spring, you don’t need to 

venture too far with gardens, nearby parks or 

nature reserves all being perfect places to start 

noticing the first signs of spring. 

Leap-frog into spring 

If you’re lucky enough to have a pond in your 

garden, then February is the time to start 

looking out for some hoppy frog action. As the 

days become warmer, frogs will start to come 

out of their hibernation deep down in the silt at 

the bottom of ponds, in compost heaps or 

under logs, decking or sheds. Frogs will head 

to the water to breed. They lay their spawn in 

still, fresh water, anywhere from small ponds, 

slow flowing streams to larger reservoirs and 

lakes. Keep a look out for the bubble-like 

spawn in shallow streams, ponds and boggy 

areas near where you live. 

Snowdrops, tea and cake 

In your garden one of the first flowering plants, 

and many people’s favourite, is likely to be the 

snowdrop. The snowdrop, also known as 

‘flower of hope’, is distinctive with its beautiful 

white bell-shaped flower. A stunning display of 

snowdrops can often be found in woodlands, 

gardens, parks and they often adorn the 

verges of roads and churchyards. Many 

churches, gardens and historic properties 

around the UK advertise ‘Snowdrop teas’ in 

February serving delicious homemade cakes 

and steaming hot mugs of tea. Keep a look out 

where you live for this perfect combination! 

7 spots of spring 

Another sure sign of spring in the garden is a 

visit from the 7-spot ladybird. The 7-spot 

ladybird is a gardener’s best friend as they are 

a natural pest control and can eat up to 5,000 

aphids in their year-long life. The best way to 

attract ladybirds to your garden is to provide 

plenty of pollen food for them with pollen-rich 

plants including dill, parsley and thyme. 

Valentine courtship dances 

With so much activity, this time of year is 

perfect for introducing children to birdwatching. 

If you wrap up warm, and take a 

flask of warming hot chocolate or soup with 

you to your local wetland centre, river or lake, 

you may be lucky enough to see our feathered 

friends celebrating a bit of Valentine love in 

February. The most fascinating courtship dance 

comes from the Great Crested Grebe. The 

grebe is easily noticed by its long sharp bill, 

orange head plumage, black and orange facial 

ruffs and distinctive crest which is a vital part of 

the courtship display. A number of phases of 

the courtship are recognized including the 

‘discovery ceremony’, ‘headshaking’, ‘penguin 

dance’ (where they raise themselves upright 

from the water and stand chest to chest) ‘fish 

offering’ (offering a beak full of water weed to 

each other), and then... you might want to 

avert your child’s eyes and declare it’s time to 

move on! 

The heron displays a similarly impressive 

courtship to look out for. During the male’s 

courtship dance he stretches his neck upwards 

and then lowers it over his back, with his 

prominent bill pointing upwards. 

Spring into action 

So shake off those wintery cobwebs, and 

spring into action this February half term. 

Many organisation and attractions are offering 

outdoor classes, workshops and activities to 

keep children occupied and help them learn 

more about the greatness of the outdoors. 

For some free fun, try out some of the National 

Trust 50 Things Spring Time Adventures 

including ‘set up a snail race’, ‘spot the lambs’ 

and ‘smell the wild garlic’. 

If your little ones need to stretch their legs and 

go wild after their winter hibernation, then grab 

your wellies and head to one of The Wetland 

Trust’s 9 Wetland Centres around the UK 

where they are hosting the National Puddle 

Jumping Championship this February half term.

Cook up a treat for Pancake Day! 

Some people like to keep it simple, with just a squeeze of lemon and a 

sprinkle of sugar, whilst others prefer to indulge with lashings of toppings or a 

sophisticated savoury approach. Whatever your style - grab your trusty frying 

pan and get ready to flip homemade pancakes this coming Shrove Tuesday! 

What and when is Shrove Tuesday? 

This year, Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day 

as it’s known in the UK, falls on Tuesday 28th 

February. Shrove Tuesday is the traditional 

feast day before the start of Lent on Ash 

Wednesday. Lent - the 40 days leading up to 

Easter - is marked by fasting, from both food 

and festivities, and is a season of reflection and 

preparation before the celebrations of Easter. 

Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of 

shriving. In shriving, a person confesses their 

sins and receives absolution for them. Shrove 

Tuesday is a day to clean the soul but also a 

day of celebration whilst embracing the last 

chance to feast before Lent. 

Why do we eat pancakes on 

Shrove Tuesday? 

The custom of eating pancakes on Shrove 

Tuesday comes from the tradition of using 

up rich foods, such as eggs, milk and sugar, 

on the eve of Lent. During Lent, people 

eat plainer food and refrain from food and 

treats associated with pleasure. The filling of 

pancakes can be either sweet or savoury. To 

go with the tradition of using up ingredients, 

it can be the perfect opportunity to clear out 

the baking cupboard, and stuff your pancakes 

with the contents of those half-finished packs 

of mini marshmallows, chocolate drops and 

hundreds-and-thousands to create a sweet 

extravaganza! 

What’s the origin of Pancake Races? 

Pancake races are thought to have begun in 

1444 in Olney in Buckinghamshire. The story 

goes, that a woman of Olney was so busy 

making pancakes that she completely lost 

track of the time, and on hearing the church’s 

shriving bell, went running to the church in her 

apron, still clutching her frying pan! The Olney 

pancake race is now world famous and other 

towns across the UK have followed holding 

their own pancake races. Pancake races today 

are often for charity with local businesses 

competing against one another. 

Celebrating around the world 

Around the world, Shrove Tuesday is 

celebrated in many different ways. In 

Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island off the 

coast of Canada, pancakes are made, but 

instead of edible fillings, small gifts are hidden 

inside. Children delight at discovering the 

objects, which are intended to be divinatory. 

So, for example, the child who receives a coin 

will be wealthy and a nail indicates that they 

will become or marry a carpenter. Remember 

to warn the recipient that the pancakes aren’t 

edible if you’re going to try this at home! In 

many countries Shrove Tuesday is known as 

‘Mardi Gras’, the French for ‘Fat Tuesday’, the 

last day of ‘fat eating’ before the start of fasting 

for Lent. Most of us know ‘Mardi Gras’ for its 

more popular meaning as carnival day, and 

will have seen the colourful street processions 

and flamboyant fancy dress costumes of 

the world famous Rio de Janeiro Carnival in 

Brazil. Venice also celebrates carnival in style. 

Leading up to Shrove Tuesday Venice 

bursts into life with partying, dancing 

and people dressed in elaborate 

costumes and masks attending 

the famous Venetian masquerade 

balls in the great palaces lining 

the Grand Canal in the centre of 

Venice. 

So banish those winter blues 

with the carnival spirit this 

Shrove Tuesday. Pump 

up the volume of some 

samba beats, get the 

family together and 

cook up a treat! 

Easy Pancake Recipe 

To make approximately 8 pancakes 

you will need... 

100g plain flour 

2 eggs • 300ml milk 

1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil, 

plus a little extra for frying 

Method 

Sieve the flour and a pinch of salt into 

a bowl and make a well in the centre. 

Crack the eggs into the well. 

Add 50ml milk and 1 tbsp oil. 

Whisk gradually bringing the flour into 

the eggs, milk and oil until a smooth, 

thick paste. Keep adding more milk 

and whisking until the mixture is the 

consistency of slightly thick single cream. 

Heat the pan with a little oil over a 

moderate heat. 

Ladle some batter into the pan, tilting 

the pan to move the mixture around for 

a thin and even layer. 

The pancake should turn golden 

underneath after about 30 secs and 

will be ready to turn. 

Ease a fish slice under the pancake, 

then quickly lift and flip it over. 

Fillings to try 

A quick squeeze of lemon and 

a sprinkle of sugar 

Lashings of chocolate spread, 

banana or a dollop of cream 

For a savoury pancake, a combination of 

cheese, onions, and tomatoes 

works well

sure how I would cope in their situations, but all of them are 

entertaining for us to read about. Hope you enjoy

imagine (not that they had ever imagined any!) No amount of 

curling up and pretending nothing was happening could stop 

it and they start to take notice when it appears these pirates 

know what happened to their parents. This is the first in an 

hilarious new series, ‘The Unintentional Adventures of the 

Bland Sisters’, with two weird and wonderful main characters. 

Anything could happen, and a lot does! You won’t be able to 

guess where it will lead. I can’t wait to see what happens to 

them next! Medium length novel. 

Me and Mister P - Maria Farrer (Oxford, £6.99) 

Arthur just wants a normal family, but his brother Liam 

has many dislikes, especially change, and is often an 

embarrassment to Arthur. He feels his parents give Liam 

too much attention leaving him out. But life gets even 

stranger for him with the arrival of Mister P — a polar 

bear who just turns up on his doorstep with a suitcase 

with Arthur’s address on a label. After a few initial 

disasters Mister P settles into the family. He is very helpful (in his own 

hilarious way) and even Liam gets to like and trust him. This starts to revive 

Arthur’s old jealousy, but Mister P shows him he can be friends with both 

brothers. In fact, he shows Arthur it is better to look for positive aspects 

rather than concentrating on the negative and Arthur starts to see Liam in 

a different light. This is a very entertaining, thought provoking read with an 

endearing character and many laugh aloud moments. Fair size print and 

lots of pictures for newly developing readers and fun to share. 

The Pudding Problem - Joe Berger 

(Simon & Schuster, £6.99) 

Simon can’t seem to stop lying, even though his family knows 

this and never believes him anyway. He ‘stretches the truth’ to 

avoid getting into trouble, but ironically that usually ends up 

getting him into more trouble. As his problems escalate out of 

control he needs help. His grandpa offers to help on condition he tells 

everyone the truth. So he does... or almost. Sometimes telling the whole truth 

can be the cause of more problems. This is a very entertaining fi rst book in 

a new series, ‘Lyttle Lies’, with a likable main character who is very skilled in 

making problems for himself. It is partly told in graphic novel form making it 

a help for reluctant or struggling readers.

Glumps and Peebles have very different 

temperaments. Peebles are much more out 

going, which one Glump envied. He lived alone

she could just sit and think like a glump. Overhearing her, the 

Glump invited her into his cave. They became friends and each 

was able to help the other fulfill their desire to enjoy each other’s 

pursuits. This is a touching , thought provoking picture book with 

vivid illustrations. It is told in rhyme with a few sentences on each 

page helping new readers.
