Welcome
A warm
to the
Experience
Devon 2017
guide.
Welcome to Devon, home to some of England’s most diverse
and beautiful natural landscapes. In between the drama of the
rugged North Devon coastline and the beautiful golden beaches
of South Devon, are no less than 5 areas of Outstanding Natural
Beauty, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO Geopark, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site and two National Parks, possibly
the most famous of which is Dartmoor with over 350 square
miles to explore.
The famous historic cities of Exeter, founded by the Romans
in AD 50, and Plymouth, where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail
for North America on the Mayflower in 1620, are both full of
heritage attractions and cultural experiences. Along with superb
shopping from main high street retailers and independents, and
a renowned food and drink scene unique to each city, they are
must visit destinations whilst in Devon.
The English Riviera is one of England’s top seaside resorts,
famed for its fantastically warm micro-climate and exotic palm
trees. It has more attractions than any other resort in the UK
and is also a Global Geopark. The area in between here and
Plymouth is known as the South Hams, and features one of the
most beautiful stretches of coastline in the UK. You’ll discover a
strong rural and maritime heritage here, along with top quality
local food including the famous South Devon Crab.
North Devon has its own unique character, with the rugged
beauty of Exmoor National Park opening up to the spectacular
scenery of the North Atlantic and some excellent surfing spots.
It is also home to many stately homes, with their glorious
grounds, through to the steep cobbled street and deep blue
harbour in the timeless village of Clovelly.
With so much to offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice – just don’t
leave without sampling a traditional Devonshire cream tea
(clotted cream first, then jam on top!).
EATING OUT
Landscape creates communities, and the diverse terrain
of Dartmoor National Park is home to some of the best
local produce in the UK. Almost everything about this last
wilderness has been decreed by its terrain; from the hardy
cattle grazing all year on the high moors, to the mineral-rich
Dartmoor spring water from the soft verdant valleys.
We love our food on Dartmoor - and so we should. We pride
ourselves on supplying some of the finest produce in the
world. Our rolling wild landscape reflects freshness, quality
and variety. Fresh and local are two words you’ll often hear to
describe the food available here today.
We’re also pretty good at cooking. Having great ingredients
helps, but on Dartmoor you’ll discover innovative cookery by
award-winning chefs using quality local produce.
Our producers sell at farmer’s markets, as well as in local
shops and farm-gate sales. Wherever you visit on Dartmoor
unique landscape still being used today in our humane
EXETER
The history
of Exeter
is rich and
long
Exeter
2
Founded by the Romans in AD50, the history of Exeter
is rich and long, evident in its stunning architecture and
heritage visitor attractions.
As you’d expect from a city with a 2,000 year history,
Exeter has much to show off, and the city’s Royal Albert
Memorial Museum (RAMM) is a good place to start.
Housed in a beautiful Victorian building, the museum
takes visitors on a voyage of discovery from pre-history to
the present day through 16 galleries of displays. Discover
Exeter throughout the ages then travel the world through
the vast array of global collections.
At the heart of the city lies Exeter Cathedral, one of the
finest examples of Decorated Gothic architecture in the
country. It lays claim to the longest stretch of unbroken
Gothic vaulting in the world. Cathedral Yard is dotted with
cafes and restaurants in which to sit and appreciate the
Cathedral’s impressive West Front.
Explore beneath Exeter’s streets through a remarkable
network of subterranean passages, constructed in
medieval times to bring fresh drinking water into the city
from springs outside the city walls. Exeter’s Underground
Passages survive largely intact and can be visited on a
guided tour – an experience not for the claustrophobic!
Find out more about the history of Exeter on a free guided
tour with the city’s prestigious Red Coat Guides. Tours run
daily throughout the year and there is no need to book –
just turn up.
The city’s compact size makes it the perfect shopping
destination – a great choice of shops can be found
within easy walking distance from each other. Browse
large department stores such as John Lewis in the main
shopping areas of Princesshay and the High Street,
or head to the Castle and West Quarters for quirky
independents and vintage clothing, tucked away in
interesting arcades.
Head to the Quayside to watch the world go by from
one of the waterside pubs or cafés, or hire a bike or
canoe to explore the Exeter Ship Canal. The south west’s
largest indoor climbing wall can also be found here, in the
Quayside’s Old Electricity Building, providing a majestic
arena in which to climb.
Exeter’s position on the River Exe lead to great wealth
in the 17th and 18th centuries, largely due to the woollen
cloth trade. In 1680 the Custom House was constructed
on the Quayside, a beautiful building renowned for its
sweeping staircase and ornate plaster ceilings. Today it is a
visitor centre, bringing the history of the Quayside to life.
Exeter’s location surrounded by lush farmland and close to
many miles of Devon coastline makes it a melting pot for
top chefs to create gastronomic delights from fresh, local
ingredients. The choice of eateries here is vast, putting it
firmly on the map as one of the foodie capitals of South
catch the waves yourself, check out Croyde Surf
Academy that aims to teach people to surf regardless
of age and ability.
There are lots of amazing accommodation options no
matter if you’re travelling alone, with your partner or
as a family! The Imperial Hotel sits in the square on
Barnstaple, close to Green Lanes Shopping Centre and
In the wetter weather (inevitable in the UK) there
North Devon and Exmoor. The Milky Way (Clovelly)
popular with all of the family. Barnstaple’s
new facility, Air Extreme, has an impressive 40
DEVON’S PROTECTED LANDSCAPES
Devon’s
Internationally
unique geology,
ecology and
Landscapes
Devon’s natural landscape is one of great beauty, with much of
it internationally recognised for its unique geology, ecology and
wildlife. With five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, two
UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a World Biosphere and a UNESCO
Global Geopark, there is something for everyone.
Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks are perhaps the most
famously recognised landscapes, located in South and North
Devon. Covering vast areas of Devon these wild landscapes have
long been drawing in visitors for their wild beauty and far-reaching
views. Whilst not far from each other, the sceneries of these two
National Parks vary enormously. Exmoor sits on the spectacular
North Devon coastline, with the highest sea cliffs in England
offering dramatic views out to the Atlantic. It was designated
Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve in 2011. Dartmoor
is inland and larger, covering 368 square miles made up of open
moorland, lofty granite tors, woodland and quiet villages.
1
Reaching to the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor and via the sea
to Lundy Island, the North Devon Biosphere Reserve is one of just
six Biosphere Reserves in the UK. UNESCO recognised the diverse
and connect with the wide range of diverse
natural beauty of the Biosphere on foot, by
bike, via easy access routes and even with audio
The East Devon coastline is designated a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of
its geological significance. Known as the Jurassic
Coast, it showcases perfectly the Earth’s history
going back over 250 million years. Discover more
about this fascinating coastline at the Seaton
Jurassic visitor centre. Further south, the English
Riviera has been designated a Global Geopark,
in recognition of its rich geological, historical and
cultural heritage. The highest concentration of
Blue Flag beaches in England, combined with the
English Rivera’s fantastically warm microclimate
means there is plenty of opportunity to get out
on the water and discover the incredible geology
and marine life here.
National Park
STRADDLING THE BOUNDARY OF SOMERSET AND DEVON, EXMOOR NATIONAL PARK IS
RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE FINEST LANDSCAPES IN THE UK.
Whether you are looking for a place to walk,
followed by a drink in a country pub, adrenalin
pumping activities or just somewhere to chill and
admire the views – you’ll find plenty to enjoy in
Exmoor National Park.
Straddling the boundary of Somerset and Devon,
Exmoor National Park is recognised as one of the
finest landscapes in the UK. Its deep wooded
valleys, high cliffs, wide open moorland and clear
streams provide inspiration and enjoyment to both
locals and visitors. The farms and villages that have
developed over hundreds of years combine to
create a rich landscape that belies the National
Park’s relatively small size of 267 square miles
(693 square kms).
Exmoor is also an amazing place to marvel at the
wonders of the night sky and in recognition of its
dark skies and the work that the National Park is
doing to keep them that way, Exmoor was
designated Europe’s first International Dark Sky
Reserve in autumn 2011.
Exmoor National Park supports a fascinating variety
of wildlife including herds of wild red deer and free
living Exmoor ponies, rich lichen communities, rare
fritillary butterflies, bats and other species
uncommon in southern Britain.
Exmoor National Park Authority works with others to
protect the special qualities of the National Park. It also
provides a number of services from planning and
conservation to high quality visitor information and
maintaining Exmoor’s excellent network of
waymarked footpaths and bridleways.
2
The amazing Lynmouth Pavilion is well worth a visit
and is home to the National Park Centre.
The Pavilion has a mix of high tech and more
traditional exhibits with everything from a huge touch
screen table and iPads to a traditional seaside photo
board. There are also National Park Centres in Dulverton
and the medieval village of Dunster with displays related
to the local area – you can also hire a telescope to get an
even better view of Exmoor’s starry skies.
ACTIVITIES IN DEVON
1
Activities
in Devon
In Devon
we love the
great outdoors
and it’s easy
to see why
2
The natural landscape here is one of diversity and breathtaking scenery.
From a leisurely walk or cycle through tranquil countryside to exhilarating
coastal adventures, there is something for everyone.
Blow away the cobwebs on Dartmoor National Park, the ultimate outdoor
playground! Hike between lofty granite tors and enjoy miles of traffic free
cycling. Don’t mind getting wet?... the River Dart has some of the UK’s
best mid-grade white water for canoeing and kayaking, or have a go at
something new, like gorge scrambling or wild swimming.
Devon is blessed with two dramatically different coastlines. The north
coast bears the brunt of the Atlantic swells so you’ll find some of the best
surfing beaches in the country here, whilst the south Devon
waters of the English Channel are calmer, and ideal for
swimming, boating and paddle boarding. For the
ultimate adrenalin-rush, explore Devon’s rocky coastline on
a coasteering expedition - scramble over rocks and jump
from great heights into the sea to explore secluded deep
sea caves! Join an experienced instructor from one of the
many adventure centres operating on both coastlines.
Back on dry-land, over 150 miles of National Cycle Network
criss-cross the Devon countryside, so whatever your ability,
one of the best ways to explore Devon has to be by bike.
Follow the 26 mile purpose-built Exe Estuary Trail along
the path of the River Exe as it winds its way from the city
of Exeter through historic maritime towns and villages out
to sea at Exmouth and Dawlish. Train and ferry links mean
smaller sections of this mainly flat, family-friendly route can
be easily explored.
Mountain bikers can descend through Devon’s forests on
hand crafted trails, such as those at Haldon Forest Park
near Exeter, or tackle the challenging inclines and dramatic
descents of Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks.
With mile upon mile of wide open space in Devon, there
are far too many activities to mention here, so go to
www.visitdevon.co.uk to start planning your adventure.
