PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE
With our May issue, I would like to take the
opportunity to thank the many Granby
families who have graced the cover of
Granby Living Magazine these past months.
Our family features have shown the diverse makeup
of the town and the interesting neighbors who make
Granby a great place to raise a family. A sincere thanks
to all of our featured families who have graciously
shared their stories with us all.
If you would like to be a featured family, or know of a
family who would be great to profile, please contact me
or our content coordinator, Bruce Deckert bdeckert@
bestversionmedia.com.
This month’s featured family is the McCartneys. A chance meeting at an aunt’s house
has led to 25 years of marriage and the raising of two great kids who really appreciate
growing up in Granby.
Also, this month in our Saluting Our First Responders feature, we profile Deputy
Chief Tim Weber, a volunteer firefighter with the Lost Acres Fire Department. Each
month we seek to honor the individual men and women who serve as first responders
in town. Thanks to you all.
Now that the weather is getting warmer, it’s time to get out and enjoy the great
outdoors. Check out Granby’s Casual Bikers group in our Events Calendar. They
sponsor wonderful scenic bike rides in surrounding towns and all over Connecticut.
While thinking about getting outdoors, why not take a hike with the family at the
McLean Game Refuge? It’s truly one of Granby’s recreational gems.
I’ll close with my familiar encouragement to patronize the advertising sponsors
who make Granby Living possible. Next time you need a product or service, call one of
our advertisers, and tell them you saw them in Granby Living.
Enjoy the spring!
Sincerely,
FAMILY FEATURE
By Bruce Deckert
The McCartney Family Photography by Amy Geigner
From House-sitting to a Home in Granby
Who needs Match.com?
While millions utilize online dating sites today, Ken and
Tracey McCartney’s vehicle for meeting, dating and getting
married was simpler — and clearly low-tech.
When they met in the summer of 1991, the World Wide Web was
barely a gleam in Bill Gates’ eye. So what was their meet-and-greet secret?
House-sitting.
“I met Ken while I was house-sitting for my aunt in Simsbury,” Tracey
says.
Ken explains that Tracey’s aunt “was a longtime customer of mine.”
Ken founded Grass Helper Inc., a lawn care company based in Granby,
when he was in high school — and he owns and manages it to this day.
Tracey is now his business partner.
They were married in November 1994 and moved into a brand-new
house in Granby.
“We built our home in Granby,” Tracey says. “Ken had a growing
business in the Farmington Valley and we thought it would be a great
place to raise a family. We bought a piece of property and designed and
built our home.”
The McCartneys have lived in town ever since.
“Raising two kids in a small town was great,” Tracey says, “because
you knew anywhere they went or if they ever needed anything, there
was always someone to count on. I also appreciate knowing everyone in
the stores, banks, post office and most restaurants. You usually run into
someone you know anywhere in town.”
Ken, 51, appreciates the “rural setting” of Granby. “We love our
neighborhood,” he says.
Born in Broomall, Pennsylvania, Ken moved to Simsbury in 1976. He
lived there until moving to Granby with Tracey after they were married
in ’94.
Tracey, 50, was born in Colchester, Connecticut, and went to the
University of Maine, where she studied animal science. After college she
moved to the Boston area, where she worked in various animal hospitals.
She returned to Connecticut in 1991 ... and soon found herself housesitting
for her aunt. The rest, as they say, is history.
Two key components of this couple’s history are their children, who
both graduated from Granby Memorial High School: Katie (Class of
2014) and Jack (2015).
“Ken had a growing business in
the Farmington Valley and we
thought [Granby] would be a
great place to raise a family.”
— Tracey McCartney
4 GRANBY LIVING

“After leaving town to attend
college I realized what an
amazing town it is to grow up in.”
— Katie McCartney
Katie, 20, attends West Chester University in Pennsylvania and is about
to finish her junior year. She is working toward a Bachelor of Science in
Education (Special Education, Grades 7-12).
Jack, 19, attends the University of New Hampshire, where he is a civil
engineering major finishing his sophomore year.
“I enjoy the small-town atmosphere in Granby,” Jack says. “It’s nice
having an unlimited amount of hiking trails in McLean [Game Refuge].”
An upside of his neighborhood, he says, is that “I like how I can just
walk to my friends’ houses who live in my general area. Great location.
Only about a two-minute drive from the center of town.”
A downside of small-town life, he observes, is that “there is really
nothing to do on the weekends in Granby. It would be nice if they got
some more restaurants or entertainment.”
Ken concurs, saying, “I would like to see a more active downtown area
— more restaurants.”
Tracey adds that the town could benefit from having “more places to
go on a weekend night, especially for the kids.”
On the other hand, Katie says that going away to school gave her a new
perspective on growing up in a small town.
She agrees with the assessment that Granby lacks nightlife and
entertainment options compared to bigger municipalities. “But after
leaving town to attend college,” she says, “I realized what an amazing
town it is to grow up in. It’s small and there are a lot of outdoor activity
opportunities for someone like me who likes to hike.”
She adds, “I thought Granby schools were excellent.”
Katie competed on the GMHS diving team and was a competitive
gymnast for 12 years until an injury ended her career.
Jack played baseball at GMHS, and after high school he and some
teammates formed a team that played in the Simsbury Men’s League. He
is also an avid Wiffle Ball player.
“All through high school my friends and I had a summer Wiffle Ball
league,” he says. “Captains would draft teams at the beginning of the
summer and we had 20-game seasons. At one point we had five teams
involved with almost 40 kids. Every game we would keep stats and post
them on our website.”
Yes, Jack and his friends share the bond of die-hard Wiffle Ball players
everywhere.
Meanwhile, on the music front, Ken and Jack are both guitarists in
separate bands.
The McCartneys have spent most of their summer weekends at their
family beach house in Old Lyme, Connecticut. “Katie and Jack have never
really known anything different in the summer,” Ken says. “Since they
were 3 and 2 we have been every weekend at Point O' Woods [beach
association]. They have grown up with the families there. And we are all
one big family.”
To keep family ties strong, Ken favors the approach of “respecting and
making time for each other — and above all, laugh.”
Tracey echoes that sentiment. “Talk to each other and enjoy each
other,” she says. “And laugh!”
More than a quarter century later, the McCartneys can smile — and
laugh — at the serendipity of the house-sitting assignment that brought
them together.
Granby Connection
My family and I have lived in Granby since 1997.
Other Places of Service as First Responder
Marlborough, Connecticut
What motivated you to serve as a first responder?
I grew up around fire trucks as my dad was a firefighter. It’s always been a big part of my life.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your work as a first responder?
I really enjoy helping people. A lot of times, we’re encountering people who are having really bad
days — sometimes the worst day of their lives. Being able to help them, no matter how much or
how little, gives me a lot of satisfaction.
Would you like to share a brief story related to your work as a first responder?
I’ve been to a lot of memorable calls over the years, ranging from bad fires/accidents to the
unusual (rescuing ducklings from a storm drain). But I think the best memories are associated
with the fire prevention activities that I did for a number of years.
My favorite part of that was talking to the kids about what colors fire trucks are (they should
all be red, in my opinion). I would always tell the kids that if the trucks weren’t red, then they
should be sent back as they weren’t ripe yet...
Family Info
My wife, Suzanne, has always been supportive of my work in the fire department. When
we bought our first house, it was a requirement for me that the town have a volunteer fire
department I could join.
I have three children: a daughter, Jordan, a senior at Granby Memorial High School; a son, Drew,
a GMHS freshman who this year joined the Lost Acres Fire Department cadet program; and a
daughter, Abbigail, who is in sixth grade.
EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR
Doctors are Prescribing Newest
Health Trend: Yoga Therapy
By Kristal Fiorentino
Despite the age-old divide between alternative healing and traditional
medicine, Western doctors seem to be coming around to a concept that
wellness enthusiasts have known for years: yoga heals.
Yoga therapy has caught the attention of today’s Western medical
professionals, researchers and physicians — and they’ve begun
prescribing yoga therapy just as they would a pharmaceutical medication.
According to an article published by The Huffington Post last year,
yoga therapy is now recognized as a clinically viable treatment, with
established programs at major health-care centers across the nation.
Therapeutic yoga has grown more accepted by traditional medicine
mostly due to the amount of clinical research on the subject. As of last
year, over 500 medical research reports had been published on yoga
therapy, including randomized, controlled, double-blind studies proving
its positive effects on patients.
Yoga therapy has been documented to provide relief from many
conditions, including anxiety, back pain, insomnia and depression,
and can reduce an individual’s risk of hypertension and cardiovascular
disease. It has also been proven to ease the side effects of aggressive
cancer treatments.
The International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) has worked
hard to establish yoga as an esteemed and medically recognized therapy,
and the association is responsible for implementing rigorous certification
standards impacting both schools and practitioners worldwide. Currently,
there are over 3,400 accredited members of IAYT hailing from over 48
countries, having graduated from one of the 130 certified institutions
located around the globe.
So, due to the intense certification requirements, you can bet you’re not
going to get therapeutic yoga at any old yoga studio, and we’re not talking
about vigorous vinyasa that facilitates healing, from simple breathing
exercises, physical postures and diet adjustments, to guided imagery and
meditation.
Sore back? Don’t be surprised if you end up focusing on your knees,
eyesight and digestion too. Yoga therapists are trained to focus on
the patient as a whole. Because the yoga therapist works to treat the
body, mind and spirit simultaneously, therapeutic yoga has the power
to gradually strengthen the interconnected systems in your body
(cardiovascular, nervous system, respiratory, etc.) that influence one
another more than you might realize.
Certified yoga therapists today can be found working in hospitals,
outpatient clinics, physical therapy offices, oncology departments
and private practice. While some of the treatment focus is on the
body’s physical mechanics, therapists often integrate Ayurvedic
dietary principles into a patient’s treatment, along with spiritual and
psychological health practices.
If you think yoga therapy might be a good treatment option for
you, you can find more information and resources and access local
practitioners on the International Association of Yoga Therapy website
(www.iayt.org).
BUSINESS PROFILE
Beacon Mechanical Shines Light on Customer Service
ByBruce Deckert
Keith and Patti Riggott and their son Nick founded Beacon
Mechanical Service in 2002. They are proud Granby residents and are
happy to have created their top-notch service company right here in
town.
Keith’s father, Clifford Riggott, owned and operated a full-service
heating company that served the commercial and industrial marketplace.
Keith joined him and learned the ins and outs of the heating and cooling
industry. Later, Beacon was launched to focus on the needs of the
residential marketplace.
“We based the company originally on serving the seven surrounding
towns, but our customer base has grown,” Keith says. “Now we cover
much of north-central Connecticut and parts of western Massachusetts.
The business has grown from a handful of people to a full-service
company employing more than 30.”
Patti adds, “No matter how big we get, we maintain our roots locally
and always strive to provide the best service we can to our friends and
neighbors.”
Granby Living Magazine caught up with the Riggotts recently to talk
about their business...
Company slogan:
Your guiding light in heating, cooling, plumbing and fuel oil.
What brought you into this line of work?
Our family has been involved in the HVAC business for many years.
It was our desire to build a residential service company that provides a
higher level of service to our local communities.
What has been your biggest inspiration?
Family is our biggest inspiration. We are a family-owned business. We
work with other family businesses, employ people who are working to
take care of their families, and service families throughout our area.
What do you enjoy most about the business?
Our enjoyment comes from when we are able to help someone in need.
Whether it’s getting a customer’s heat back on, taking care of a plumbing
issue, or helping them save on their utility bills with the installation of
high-efficiency equipment — our joy is in servicing our valued customers.
What are some challenges you face, and how are you able to meet those
challenges?
The biggest challenge is the ever-changing technology. We meet those
challenges by constantly training our people. We have great relationships
with the various manufacturers’ representatives. This affords us the
opportunity to get in-depth training as new products come into the
market.
GRANBY HISTORY
This Month in
Granby History
By Ken Kuhl
GRANBY
May 1802 — The Granby pound
officers report that farm animals
had been recovered after escaping
their farms.
The Granby Town Record recorded
the following:
Taken up by the Subschriber on the 23rd Day of May Last abay
Horse about Six years old 13 or 14 hands high with awhite Spot in his
forehead Shod befroe taken up by Alexander Griswold Jur
Samuel Benjain Ear mark halpeny Cutt the under Side of the Right Ear
Entred 31 May 1802
A poundkeeper (or poundmaster) was a local government official
responsible for the feeding and care of stray livestock such as cattle,
hogs, horses, sheep and geese. The poundmaster was tasked with
impounding livestock that were loose in the village.
Wayward animals were brought to the pound by the poundmaster,
constables or private citizens. The pound was typically a centrally
located, stone-fenced enclosure. One such structure can be seen at
Old Sturbridge Village.
The poundmaster would attempt to notify the owner, who could pay
a fine and any associated fees and claim the animal. If unclaimed,
the animals would be sold at auction. More valuable livestock could
require longer periods of public notification before an auction.
Fees included the fee for the poundmaster plus daily feeding costs of
the animals, the fees of any fence viewers involved in the case, and
any property damages assessed by the fence viewer.
In Connecticut, the fence viewer was a duty assigned as needed to
a selectmen or other official. Fence viewers used their judgment to
determine whether a fence was sufficient and equivalent to the type of
fence required by statute.
May 19, 1802 — The Legion of Honor (Légion d'Honneur) is created
by Napoleon Bonaparte, giving him a tool comparable to the orders
his courtiers busy with matters of etiquette and protocol.
Q: How will I know if I need a coach, a therapist, a
self-help book, or a stiff drink?
A: While I’m always up for the occasional stiff drink and
good book, I think your money is better spent on the others, and
your results will be longer lasting! If you’re looking to process
events and memories from your past, you’re better off choosing
a therapist. If you are ready to focus on the future and quit
repeating old patterns, habits or conditioning, a coach is your
best bet. Good luck and cheers ;)
