Hush!” said one of the tall girls, waving a finger at her chubby friend. “Ah speakin’ trut’!” the girl called Tammi responded. “An’ who you to shush me! You don’ pay taxes fuh dis mout’!” “Respect yuhself den, gyul,” spat the taller girl, cutting an eye at Tammi. “You sound like one of dem jametes, sellin’ dey bodies when de tourist boats reach. You soundin’ jus like skettel trash.” Tammi sucked teet. “Wellll, ah jus’ sayin’ what all yuh tinkin,” she said, rolling her head with each word. “Jeez-an-ages! Hush yuh mouts! Petra done reach!” The Face Dancer turned to greet the new arrival. “Hey Petra! We gonna go up de road with Legacy. Yuh coming?” “No. I…I’m goin’ home!” “Petra!” Tammi shouted, nudging her way through the taller girls, dragging a now not-too-reluctant Denmark by the belt. “Look mih fren’. He a Yankee.” Tammi gazed admiringly at Denmark. Petra cast an icy gaze at the Yankee who had obviously beguiled an easily impressed Tammi. For the most part, Yankee men left her less than impressed. And she especially had little regard for the Yankees who came to Trinidad for carnival. They usually showed little respect for the island, thinking that it was one big whorehouse. Her eyes inspected the paint on the Yankee’s face and arms. “Humph,” she said softly. “Typical tourist,” she said under her breath. She rolled her eyes at his dark trousers, hard sole black leather shoes and red polo shirt. Didn’t anybody tell this Yankee how to dress for carnival? Usually foreigners loved their shorts and sandals and sleeveless shirts, or no shirt. When the Yankee smiled and nodded, Petra turned away abruptly. “Come Tammi!” she said, grabbing the chubby’s girl arm. “Leh we chat!” “Now? But ah thought yuh leavin’! Tammi’s eyes darted back and forth between her ‘catch’ and Petra’s tight grip on her arm. “Yes. I’m leaving,” she said tightening her grip on her friend, “but come, let’s chat first. Come walk wit’ me down de road.” Petra watched impatiently as her friend unpeeled herself from the Yankee, allowing her hands to slowly glide down his muscular arms. She frowned as naïve little Tammi puckered her mouth and blew the Yankee a kiss. “Now! Tammi! Leh we go!” In under a minute Denmark was alone. All of the girls had merged into the sea of shining bodies like a river flowing into the sea. Behind him, the jiggling, jumping, gyrating hordes of Legacy were
about to overtake him. He was in the middle of the avenue and the first wave of muscled men and scantily dressed women skirted him on both sides. He searched for the two young ladies but the entire street was a whirl of spinning colors. He couldn’t tell one person from the other. What was their names? The little fresh one was Tammi. He was sure of that. But he couldn’t remember the name of the other one. The one with those pretty eyes. Denmark whistled. She is one coldblooded sister. She looked at me like I was spit. Denmark chucked. Far in the distance, he saw two more taxis flash by. Okay, Denmark, he said to himself. That’s over. Let’s try to find that Normandie Hotel. In two days, we have work to do. “Look at de ass in de road! He about to dead!” This time he didn’t hesitate. He ran across the avenue.
