Once there was an orchard unlike the others.
This orchard was angry
and the Apples were bad.
Every morning the Apples unmade their beds
and lined up for the Farmers.
The Apples had to be bad
if they wanted to make for good Cider.
So the Farmers taught the Apples to be bad.
And the Apples loved being bad.
And that was good.
But time went by.
And one day the Apples came to the Farmers and said,
“We don’t want to be Cider.
We want to be plucked by children
and held in their hands and be happy.”
But the Farmers replied, “You are too bad to be eaten.”
And so the Apples turned good.
And they stopped smashing the windows.
And started fixing them.
And they stopped graffitiing the barns.
And started cleaning them.
And they stopped throwing themselves at the Farmers.
And started presenting their polished skins.
This made the Farmers shake with rage.
And they said, “The Cider has turned to juice.
We can’t make our bold Cider without your bad,
Apples.”
But the Apples replied,
“You pluck us off the tree,
you tear our cores out,
you crush us,
then you throw us away.
Our life is fruitless. What is our meaning?”
But the Farmers had no answers.

And after a long time
the Farmers felt desperate.
So they went to the Cidery.
And they grabbed the bottles of Cider.
And they brought them to the Apples.
“Come Apples! Taste your purpose!” cried the Farmers.
But the Apples did not come.
The Apples did not want to taste themselves.
“How can you truly know unless you try?”
asked the Farmers.
This made the Apples stop.
This made the Apples think.
“Do it. Try you.”
And so the Apples tried themselves.
And the Apples understood. They were good.
They were really good.
They were the best gift known to fruitkind.
“We must be bad if we’re to be good.” said the Apples.
And the Apples grasped their purpose.
And the Apples knew that to be good
they must love to be bad.
