They were especially proud to have been selected by McLaren Construction to carry out a refurbishment project at Herbal House, a magnificent building set over 10 floors located in Farringdon and Clerkenwell, the heart of London’s creative district. Over 500 tonnes of structural steelwork and architectural metalwork was used to sustain and modernise this iconic building, whilst maintaining its unique architecture and character. The extensive structural works included the upwards extension of the existing building by two storeys from level 5 to roof, the construction of a new ground floor, six new lift cores and the strengthening of the existing structure. The works also consisted of supplying and installing temporary steelwork, over 2500 m² of new metal decking and the on-site painting of intumescent coating to all new steelwork. deadlines imposed by constant evolving design changes; all of which were overcome because ASME Engineering is not only a proactive company but also a highly competent and reactive company with a very positive attitude both on and off site. Further logistical challenges included the scheduling of road closures and mobile cranes which carefully had to manoeuvre 10 meter long plate girders, each weighing 5 tonne. A spider crane was also lifted and utilised at roof level to assist in the construction of this new extension, which took precise planning as the works had to be executed in tandem with the installation of other core areas of the job. Site teams often worked 7 days a week, alongside McLaren’s team to deliver this project on time, on budget and above all safely, whilst overcoming all the usual challenges associated with refurbishing such old historic buildings, amongst the everyday hustle and bustle of London’s thriving city. ASME’s project team worked very closely with Watermans engineers to overcome the unpredictable challenges uncovered as the existing structure was exposed. One such challenge was the tight
