A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF
IN OUR OWN VOICES, INC.
Tandra R. LaGrone
In Our Own Voices (IOOV), is
exceedingly excited to host
the 2017 Say It Loud Black &
Latino Gay Pride, a celebration of Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Transgender people of color (LGBT
POC) communities. It is a chance for LGBT POC,
families, friends and allies to come together in
unity to celebrate freedom, strength, and talent.
Through this unique event, IOOV provides an
opportunity to acknowledge and recognize the
diversity of over 5,700 LGBT POC community
members and their contributions to the LGBT
community at large. As an organization that seeks
to promote the health and well being of LGBT
people of color, we understand the importance
of creating and having validating safe spaces
that foster positive socialization and access to
resources. LGBT POC are often neglected and
underserved. Black & Latino Gay Pride offers the
Capital Region a safe space for the LGBT POC
communities to say, "We are here and We are
PROUD to be who We are!" So if this is your first
Black & Latino Gay Pride, "Welcome." If not, we are
happy to have your continued support. Visit the
TAÍNA ASILI Y LA BANDA REBELDE
Taína Asili is a Puerto Rican singer, songwriter, bandleader and
activist carrying on the tradition of her ancestors, fusing past and
present struggles into one soulful and defiant voice.
Residing in Albany, NY, she performs her social justice songs as
a solo artist, and also with her eight-piece band, Taína Asili y la
Banda Rebelde, performing at venues, festivals, conferences
and political events across the globe. Taína Asili’s voice exudes
strength of Spirit, filling listeners with the fervor for freedom and
inspiring audiences to dance to the rhythm of rebellion. During
Taína Asili’s 20-year career of creating music for social change she
has toured the country many times, toured Europe from Ireland
to Germany, and has performed in Canada, Mexico, and Puerto
Rico. Taína Asili has performed at many well-known festivals and
venues, sharing the stage with renowned artists and activists such as Talib Kweli, Cornel West, Ursula
Rucker, Sonia Sanchez, Tom Morello, Paula Cole, Jello Biafra, and The Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars.
ROBIN S.
In the years since turning worldwide dance floors and pop radio airwaves upside down with the massive
smash "Show Me Love," Robin has traveled an enlightening journey toward heightened self-awareness
and creative maturity. After working on her song writing for several years, she began recruiting a sterling
array of producers and tunesmiths that includes Bryce Wilson, Tony Moran, Wayne Cohen and Shepard
Solomon, King Britt and John Wicks, Eric "E-Smoove" Miller, Darrin Whittington, and Steve Dubin who
guided Robin on her hotly anticipated second album, From Now On (Big Beat/Atlantic, 1997).
“I feel as if I’m soaring on these songs,” the singer says with pride. She is inspired to take flight by a deftly
mined musical environment that transcends the traditional boundaries of dance music. “From Now On”,
succeeds in delivering the credible grooves of underground club culture, while also showcasing fine live
musicians, who bring soulful warmth to every one of the album’s songs. “There is no match for the
experience of singing with a band. It’s nourishment to the soul for every singer.” After all, you can’t feel
the funk with a computer-generated guitar.”
SATURDAY - JUNE 10
FESTIVAL HEADLINERS
MIMI GONZALEZ has been rocking the mic at Prides and protests to cruises and
festivals since before being gay was spelled with three letters. She
welcomes everyone in the acronym of GLBTEtc through her fierce politics of
inclusion. Her life-long agitation and activism is expressed in print through
queer and diversity and inclusion magazines and as a stand-up comic on
nationally televised shows. She’s been called “one of the funniest comics in
NYC” according to Backstage Magazine and Provincetown Magazine says she’s
“Funny, sexy, sharp, positive…Mimi Gonzalez is a comic, life-affirming force.”Her
most recent creative venture is pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills
College in Oakland, California. She values the individual voice and our need to
express ourselves. Writing has served that for her throughout her life and she’s
committed to bringing that to the community having actively participated in and conducting writing workshops
since 2014.
LOLA JANE
Zariah Lola Wisky (born February 19, 1994), a singer/songwriter from Bronx,
NY, known by her professional name Lola Jane, is an upcoming pop-R&B
artist. Singing for as long as she can remember, Jane wrote her first song over
two years ago and hasn’t stopped ever since. She started off posting clips
on her social media site (Instagram), which later lead to singing at live music
venues such as Nuyorican Poets Cafe, The Bowery Electric, Flatiron Hotel and
American Beauty. Grammy Nominated producer, Pedro “SP” Polanco, says,
“Jane has a unique voice. It is full of soul”. She has released four original tracks
onto YouTube, Soundcloud and all digital stores. She is looking to release her
EP at the end of the summer of 2017.
DJ JEMINII
Born and raised in NYC, Dj Jeminii began Djing at an early age. Growing up in a house
where music was always being played helped develop an ear for music. Hearing old
and new music definitely gave Dj Jeminii a great apprecitation for music. When Dj
Jeminii started out he had help from The Original Spindarella (formally of Salt n Pepa),
as well as local Dj’s from NY. Over the last few years Dj Jeminii played many different
kind of events. Such as Pride NYC on top of a float, one of the after parties from the
Jay Z concert at Yankee Stadium, Video Release events, Openings of Stores and Fitness
Centers, College events, New Year Parties at The Dugout across from Yankee Stadium,
and more. Some of the locations include New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, Florida just to name a few. Dj Jeminii
mixes have been features on Chill Lover Radio, Promodj’s.com, ITunes, Housemixes.com and more. Dj Jeminii had
been an affiliate of Chill Lover Radio since 2011. The Chill Lover Radio family has definitely been a big influence on
his career being able to utilize the wealth of knowledge from people that had been there is a gift in itself.
ALEX SOPHIA
Alex Sophia, born August 5, 2002, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Alex
has Mexican, Egyptian, Polynesian, and Anglo-Saxon heritage, resulting in a unique
blend of cultural awareness. Alex, was born in Tucson, Arizona and later moved to
the Capital Region of New York State where she lives with her dads and siblings. Alex
began singing and performing in her elementary school at talent shows, quickly
receiving recognition and requests for more performances. Music was a language
that made sense to her like nothing ever had. Alex can play the piano, the guitar,
the ukulele, the cello, and the violin. Alex’s love for music is a major focus in her life.
After working with a songwriter on one song, Alex learned how to express her own
emotions through song. Alex now writes the lyrics and music to her own songs and
performs most of the instrumental tracks for the production of those songs. Being
a child of mixed heritage in such an ethnocentric school resulted in severe bullying
for Alex. Alex has been able to channel her hurt about being bullied and her anger
toward the bullies into her music as a form of therapy and an exercise in tolerance.
Originally from Rockaway Beach Queens NY; Royelle has been Influenced by music
all of her life. She has been dancing on stages, and has been in and out of recording
artists and bands that would help cultivate her sound today. Royelle has done shows
up and down the east coast from NYC, Nyack, Gloversville, Saratoga, Albany, Rochester
all the way to Middletown NY. She's also opened up for up and coming industry artists
like Troy Ave. Last summer, she performed with Candela at the Annual National Puerto
Rican Day Parade in NYC; along with performing for seasoned music executives like
"Love and HipHop's" Rich Dollaz who crowned her best new artist from the 518 out
of a 30 man line up. With that being said, she was the only female participant in that
lineup. Royelle has done numerous radio interviews, charity events for domestic
violence and LGBT equality. She has been featured on RudeBoy and Rochester
Woman's Magazine, UGHH Blog and has collaborated with international producers.
