Venha descobrir a tradição dos tapetes de flores, este inolvidável
cartaz turístico de Vila do Conde, resultante do bairrismo
de um povo e de dias consecutivos de árduo e afincado
trabalho, transmitido de geração em geração.
O processo inicia-se com a recolha dos arbustos (buxo e
murta), uma vez que são plantas mais resistentes, seguind-se
a apanha dos pampilos, deixando para último a apanha das
hortênsias, das rosas e outras flores, dada a sua fragilidade.
Após a recolha das várias espécies de flores, passam à fase
em que as pessoas se reúnem para, pacientemente, desfolharem
as flores e cortarem o funcho.
O ponto alto da preparação dos tapetes de flores é, sem
dúvida, a noite da sua elaboração. As equipas de cada uma
das ruas reúnem-se, organizam-se e começam a preencher as
formas. Cada um dos tapetes começa a dar cor e brilho às ruas
que aguardam, ansiosas, pelo resultado final… este é um
trabalho que se estende ao longo de toda a noite.
Quando a cidade acorda, já as ruas do núcleo histórico e zona
ribeirinha estão cobertas com milhares de flores, que se complementam
entre si.
Durante o Dia de Corpo de Deus, milhares de pessoas acorrem
a Vila do Conde para verem mais uma vez os tradicionais
Tapetes de Flores, parte integrante do património cultural
desta terra e resultado de uma arte que está presente nas
mãos dos vilacondenses.
Aproveite também para festejar os santos populares. Em Vila
do Conde, o padroeiro é São João, cuja imagem se venera na
quinhentista Igreja Matriz e esta é uma festa com profundas
raízes na tradição popular e com ligações multisseculares ao
Convento de Santa Clara.

To visit Vila do Conde is to enjoy the beaches, the rurality of
its parishes, the hospitality of its people, is to know the
archaeological legacy, the beauty and grandeur of its monumentality
and its history, the hallmark of the contemporary
architecture, the gastronomic variety, the handicraft tradition,
the beauty of the landscape, the fauna and the flora, the
events, …
Come and discover the tradition of the flower carpets, this
unforgettable tourist attraction of Vila do Conde, born out of
a localism of a people and of consecutive days of arduous
work, transmitted from generation to generation.
The process begins with the gathering of shrubs (boxwood
and myrtle), since they are more resistant plants, followed by
the picking of pampili and only later of hydrangeas, roses and
other flowers, given their fragility.
After gathering the various species of flowers, they proceed
to the phase in which the locals come together to patiently
defoliate the flowers and cut the fennel.
The high point of the preparation of the flower carpets is,
without a doubt, the night of its preparation. The teams of
each of the streets get together, organize themselves and
start to fill out the molds. Each of the carpets begins to colour
and sparkle the streets that anxiously await for the final
result… this is a work that goes on all night.
When the city awakes, the streets of the historical centre and
riverside area are covered with thousands of flowers that
complement each other.
During Corpus Christi Day, thousands of people flock to Vila
do Conde to once again see the traditional Flower Carpets, an
integral part of the cultural heritage of this land and the result
of an art that is present in the hands of the inhabitants of Vila
do Conde.
Take the chance to celebrate the popular saints. In Vila do
Conde, the patron saint is St. John the Baptist, whose image
is worshipped in the 16th century Mother Church and this is a
festivity deeply rooted in popular tradition and with centuries
old connections to the Convent of Saint Claire.
