Stettler town awards tenders

opposed to the project, Dave Grover
and Ernie Gendre, both expressed
wishes to reconsider the design of the
shop.
Grover contended
that the
county needs to
build something
“more fiscally
responsible”,
while Gendre
took issue with
the project contractor,
Scott
Builders.
Both Nixon and
Coun. James
Nibourg
responded to
Gendre’s query
about how
council decided
on Scott Builders,
over other contractors
that bid
on the project.
“It was a 4 - 3
vote,” stated
Nixon.
“This council
decided to go with
Scott,” responded
Nibourg.
Grover also
wanted gravel
testing done on
any land the
county might
want to sell. CAO

some of the
parcels have
already been
tested but any
that haven’t could
be tested prior to
being sold.

Two out of three tenders were
awarded by Stettler Town council at
their July 5 regular meeting.
The town had budgeted for $130,000
towards a new ice resurfacer. Two bids
came in, both well under the amount
budgeted.
Industrial Machine bid $98,685 with
a four month delivery time and Big
Hill Services bid $106,978 with an 11
month delivery time.
Council awarded the tender to
Industrial Machine.
Bids to replace two heating, ventilation
and air conditioning units (HVAC)
for the Stettler Recreation Centre came
in at nearly one third the amount
Bring back options
Council requested that administration
bring back all options for funding
the construction for the July 13
meeting as well as whether any of the
existing tenders will have to be retendered
because of delays.

The project had a budget of $140,000,
but the bid from Keith’s Refrigeration
came in at $49,750 plus tax to replace
both units and Action Plumbing bid
$48,660 plus tax for both units. The
tender was awarded to Action
Plumbing. One bid that came in more
than double the budgeted amount was
for a winged power take off pull behind
mower.
Only $10,000 was budgeted for the
mower but the only bidder was Bill’s
Farm Supplies for $23,900 plus tax.
Council defeated a motion to approve
awarding the tender in favour of
researching other options for purchasing
the mower or putting off the
purchase until next year.

Development down
Building permit activity to the end of
June was down substantially from this
time last year.
Total building permits to June 30
were slightly over $1.8 million compared
to $6.1 million last year. The
largest drop was in residential construction
at only 19 per cent of 2015’s
total. Commercial construction was
slightly higher at 21 per cent.
Proclamation
After a proposal from Coun.
Malcolm Fischer and agreement from
the rest of council, Mayor Dick
Richards proclaimed July 8 as
Collector Car Appreciation Day in
Stettler.
The day of recognition was first
started in the United States on July 9,
2010 with annual dates chosen each following
year.
