BHS girls get a lesson in self defense

BELCHERTOWN – A group of 35 female
Belchertown High School students faced off
with grown men in simulated attacks during a
Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class at the
school last week – preparing them if a situation
were to arise for real.
Physical Education teacher and RAD
instructor Alison Tripp started the simulation
by stoking up the girls – getting them in the
right frame of mind to take on an attacker.
The 35 girls formed a circle around Tripp and
as she yelled out commands they’d follow her
and yell in an overpowering tone “NO” or
“STAY BACK.”
Belchertown Chief of Police Fran Fox,
who originally started the program at the high
school in 2000, said the class doesn’t teach
the girls how to fight, but teaches them to be
more aware of their surroundings – as well as
defend themselves.
“The school department decided to offer
the course as a credit program to the young
ladies instead of a gym class,” said Fox, adding
that the skills learned in the RAD class
are ones that one can carry with them for their
life. “We don’t teach them to fight – we teach
them to be aware of their surroundings and to

violence, are making a different in their
community this week by donating books
covering a range of domestic violence
and sexual assault issues to five public
libraries.

may be down in the Pioneer Valley, but the
demands on the emergency food network
just keep going up. More local people are
using food pantries and using them long
term, so now, more than ever, the annual
Belchertown CAN! food drive is helping to
meet an urgent need.
This year’s event will take place on
Saturday, Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Volunteers will collect non-perishable goods
and cash donations at three Belchertown
markets: Stop & Shop, 45 Federal St.;

Domestic abuse survivors pay it forward
the Domestic Abuse Support Group in
Belchertown chose to donate books to
libraries in the area as a way to “pay it
forward” to their communities.
“These women wanted to take action
with what they have learned,” said

important to them, so they wanted to

Debate on
solar panels
at NESFI
continues

BELCHERTOWN – The debate
over the pros and cons of building several
solar arrays on a parcel of land near
Jackson Street continued during a public
hearing hosted last week by the Planning
Board.
Several weeks ago, The New England
Small Farms Institute submitted a proposal
to the Planning Board to build solar
arrays on a 5.5-acre hayfield that it leases
from the Department of Agriculture on
Jackson St. The plan is to build solar
panels capable of producing energy, but
still keeping the land usable for agricultural
purposes.
“This has been a hayfield for decades,
it is in active agriculture and gets mowed
several times a year, it is a field that will

Hampshire Council secures
Community Transformation Grant
REGION - The Hampshire Council of Governments,
in partnership with the towns of Amherst, Belchertown,
Northampton and Williamsburg, was awarded a $60,000
multi-year Community Transformation Grant. The funding
comes from the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS) and will be administered by the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH).
The grants are designed to take a prevention-based
approach to improving health and wellness in cities and
towns across Massachusetts.
“This investment expands local health services and will
help prevent illness,” said Senator John Kerry.
“This critical funding will synchronize and focus wellness
efforts that a wide variety of groups are engaged in
here in Hampshire County,” said Todd Ford, executive
director of the Council. “By doing so, we will assist cities
and towns in the development of local policies that bridge
the gap between the promotion of wellness as a concept
and the one the ground reality of providing residents access

A key focus of both awards is an expansion of the Mass
in Motion Municipal Wellness and Leadership Program,
which works at the local level to support policy and environmental
change to reduce obesity, improve nutrition,
and promote active living. The program is one component
of the groundbreaking Mass in Motion statewide
anti-obesity initiative implemented by the Patrick-Murray
Administration in January 2009.
The nationwide Community Transformation Grants
program was created by HHS through funding provided
by the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care law.
Overall, HHS has awarded approximately $103 million in
prevention grants to 61 states and communities, reaching
more than 120 million Americans.

Sleigh Rally set for Feb. 4
at Old Sturbridge Village
STURBRIDGE – Belchertown residents
will be among dozens of sleigh drivers
competing in the second annual Antique
Sleigh Rally at Old Sturbridge Village on
Sat. Feb. 4. Antique horse-drawn sleighs
– many of them 80 to 120 years old – will
converge on the Village for the sleigh rally,
which will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature
drivers competing in a variety of categories,
including the popular “Sleigh Dog”
and “Currier & Ives” divisions. The event
is open to the public and free with museum

Belchertown residents participating
include Jim and Maryann Chevalier and
Lydia and Onna Downey. At last year’s

Hope’s Place to hold
second simple supper
BELCHERTOWN – On Tuesday, Jan. 24, Hope United
Methodist Church will be having their second “Hope’s
Place Simple Supper” at 6 p.m. in Fellowship Hall in
the church. The church is located on Main Street on the

the at-large seat on the Historic District Commission. This
commission has regulatory control over new construction,
reconstruction, alterations, movements and demolition of
all exterior architectural features of buildings and structures
with the Historic District which are visible from any public

announces vacancy
BELCHERTOWN - The recently vacated
position of assessor will be appointed in
accordance with the provisions outlined in
MGL Chapter 41, Section 11 by a joint
appointment of the Board of Assessors and
Board of Selectmen. The appointed individual
will fill the seat and shall perform duties
of the office until the next annual election on
May 21. The applicant must be a registered
voter in the Town of Belchertown.
In accordance with MGL Chapter 59,
Section 21, the Assessors shall assess all
tax duly certified to them and perform all
necessary duties as defined in MGL Chapter
59. Some of the duties include the classification
and valuation of all real and personal
property along with setting the tax rate each
fiscal year.

St. Francis Cubs tour
Turley Publications
PALMER – The St. Francis Pack 507 Cub Scouts had
a busy month this past December, closing it out with
a “Go See It” to Turley Publications on Water Street
in Palmer. The requirement was one of the last before
some Cubs earn the rank of Tiger at the next Pack meeting
at the end of this month.
The Cubs toured the facility and learned what it takes
to put together, publish and distribute a newspaper. They
even had a chance to see some newspapers roll through
the presses and then receive one “hot of the press.”
Their tour guide for the event was Vice President of
Publishing Doug Turley, who gave the Cubs an inside
look at the pre-press area, graphics department, presses
and paper room. One stop along the way was at a giant
scale. The pack and siblings weighed in at 687 pounds.

could make a difference in the life
of another. As one donor, you can
help more than 50 people in need
of organs or tissue, according to Dr.
George Lipkowitz, medical director,
Transplant Division, Baystate
Medical Center.
Even though hundreds of thousands
of people have provided the
gift of life through a commitment to
organ donation, there is still a critical
need for organ, tissue, marrow and
blood donation. More than 112,000
people are on the nation’s organ
transplant waiting list and, on average,
18 patients die each day while
awaiting an organ.
Making your wishes known is easy.

donor card or indicate their wishes
on their driver’s license or register

HOUSE BURNS AT TURKEY HILL
“The 14-room homestead on the
farm owned by Jewell H. Knight
of Wellesley Hills, formerly of this
town, in the Turkey Hill district, and
occupied by William T. H. Tucker
and family, was burned to the ground
Friday morning in a fire fanned by a
brisk wind.

a call from a neighboring farm, but
were able only to save the barn and
outbuildings.

been achieved with 100 million organ,
eye and tissue donors being registered
in the United States. On average, nearly
8 million people join a state donor
registry each year, with a majority (97
percent) joining through state departments
of motor vehicles.
However, because the number of
transplant patients continues to rise,
there is still a critical need for organ,
tissue, marrow and blood donation.
As a result, a new national goal has
been set to register 20 million additional
donors by the end of 2012.
While great strides have been
made in educating the public about
deceased donations, there are many
factors contributing to a decline in
available organs, especially kidneys,
as a more safety-conscious public
results in fewer accidental deaths.

making a difference in someone’s life
The fire was apparently caused
by a defective chimney and broke
out in the upper part of the two-story
struc ture. Mrs. Tucker discovered
the fire and woke her husband, who
works nights at the Monsanto Company.
Without delaying to dress, he
ran to the Bobowiec farm for help,
but the house so quickly filled with
smoke that all they could save was
a small amount of clothing, thrown
out a window -- and two kittens. The
re mainder was a total loss, there being
no insurance. Besides the loss of all
household goods, the fire destroyed a
large quantity of canned goods which
Mrs. Tucker had put up, also recently
purchased potatoes and ten pounds
of sugar, the latter not very easily
replaced these days. The six children
were all at school at the time of the
fire.
The building was partly covered by
insurance.
The place is a well-known landmark.
The earliest known owner was
Joseph R. Gould, father of Hen ry R.
by becoming a living kidney donor,
offering a child or adult in western
Massachusetts an alternative to waiting
on the national transplant list
for a kidney from a deceased donor.
Those altruistic donors will be donating
one of their two healthy kidneys,
and after the transplant surgery will
resume normal, active lives.
There are several benefits for a
patient who receives a kidney from
a living donor, including a higher
success rate, a better genetic match
which lessens the risk of rejection,
and the transplant surgery can be
scheduled at a time that is convenient
for both the donor and the recipient.
Deciding whether you want to be a
living kidney donor involves careful
consideration. All potential donors
must be in good health and before
being accepted as a living donor will
undergo a number of medical tests
by the transplant team to make sure
they are a suitable candidate. Living
kidney donors must be over the age
of 18 and have a blood type that is
compatible with that of the recipient.

Weapons modernization
enhances the horrors of war
Dear Editor:
My dad was a veteran of WWII of which he made two
combat jumps being enlisted in the 101st airborne division.
I recall him telling me that they often fired their rifles
at the enemy in hopes of keeping them at bay, or in other
words, keeping some distance between them. He also was
explicit in saying he hoped he did not hurt anyone. And
house-to-house combat was something that he wanted to
avoid.
My point is today’s soldiers have at their disposal highly
sophisticated weaponry which allows them to see the
effect of the actions taken first hand. Night vision goggles
and powerful scopes bring the war up-close and personal.
And much of the missions in these latest Mid Eastern conflicts
require dwelling-to-dwelling intrusions. No war is a
cakewalk but modern weapons leave little doubt about the
results and therefore magnifying negative traumatic feelings
the combatant encounters.
Maybe our implements of destruction have out-paced
our ability to reconcile the behavior of war with our wanting
for compassion among our fellow man.

I’m very pleased to see this addressed in our local paper
as a reminder to citizens of our community. Recently,
while traveling between Belchertown and Granby on 202
I was nearly rear-ended by a woman who was texting and
driving. She left skid marks on the road from her last minute
braking to avoid hitting me. I swerved onto the shoulder
to get out of her way when I heard the tires skiding. I
was shaken and furious - I was driving my four-year-old to
daycare when this happened!
Are we really willing to hurt others- children included,
or change someone’s life forever, just to send someone an
“OMG!” or status update? Is that REALLY worth it?

The merger will allow the Sentinel to
expand its local news and advertising coverage
as well as increase circulation.
For the past eight years the Sentinel has
been published at the Quabbin Printing Co.,
Inc. facilities in Belchertown. Computer
typesetting was adopted by the paper last
spring. The new move to the Palmer plant
will improve all aspects of the production
of the paper as well as making use of the
printing equipment for commercial jobs.
The art, photography and circulation facilities
will also be of great benefit in supporting
the Belchertown plant.
In commenting upon the merger, Tom
Turley stated, ‘This move can only prove
beneficial to the advertisers and readers
of the Sentinel. Pete Dearness will continue
to have complete independent control
over the editorial and news content of the
Sentinel. We hope to assist in the expansion
and increased circulation of this wellestablished
Belchertown weekly.’
The Sentinel was started in 1915 by
Lewis B.H. Blackmer who began commercial
work in 1903. Peter M. Dearness,
editor since 1964 stated, ‘JoAnne and I are
more than satisfied that this move is a very
good move for Belchertown, The Sentinel
and its readers and advertisers. The modern
and expanded facilities of the Palmer plant
will allow us to accomplish many of the
ideas that we were not able to ac complish
without additional mechanical and personnel

DISCUSS GROWTH PROBLEMS
“Faced with the burgeoning problems
of wall-to-wall houses, schools with split
sessions, and water polluted from their
own sewers, many once small communities
have cried “Enough!” Strict zoning
laws and building codes have forced the
builders to spread out in ever-widening
circles from the cities.
Now they have reached Belchertown.
With low land values, archaic zoning
laws, no master plan, it is a town divided
against itself into little sections, and
in short, is a sitting duck. Granted there
are sixty square miles to develop, but the
developments are crowded into small
areas, chosen not for a good location but
because someone wants to realize a profit
on a certain parcel of land.
Facing this problem ten to twenty years
later than most of the surrounding communities,
we are in the unique position
of learning from the others’ mistakes. A
master plan is being considered, but will
come too late to prevent most of the problems
presented by the coming sub-divisions.
Zoning by-laws must protect the
town in the interim.
Two opposing views -- one of strict
controls with a Board of Review to pass
on sub-divisions, and the other of general
controls based on a natural selection
of business and residential zones -
- were described by David Sussman and
John Sullivan at the January meeting of
the Com munity Action Organization.
Both men agreed that all individuals of
the community must become involved in
planning for the future of the town.”

anthropologist to speak at STCC
SPRINGFIELD - Susan Darlington, of
Belchertown, professor of anthropology
and Asian studies at Hampshire College,
will speak at Springfield Technical
Community College (STCC) as part
of its Ovations Series on Wednesday,
Feb. 22 at 10:10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
in the Scibelli Theatre. The sciencebased
discussion, Mainstreaming Ritual:
The Evolution of the Thai Buddhist
Environmental Movement, also will
include Darlington’s insights into religion
and social activism.
Darlington has spent years studying
the work of Buddhist monks in Thailand
who are engaged in rural development
and environmental conservation. The
outcome of this research is her forthcoming
book, The Ordination of a Tree: The
Thai Buddhist Environmental Movement
(SUNY Press).

DAR announces energy and
environment grant for $930k
SOUTH HADLEY – In late December,
the Massachusetts Department of
Agricultural Resources (DAR) awarded
67 grants totaling $930,000 to enable
Massachusetts farmers to install renewable
energy systems, improve energy efficiency,
and to increase compatibility between
agricultural practices and protection of the
state’s natural resources. Four farms, located
within Hadley and South Hadley, were
awarded an amount totaling $66,250.
“I am very proud of the thriving agricultural
community in the Second Hampshire
District,” said State Rep. John W. Scibak.
“These grants will provide additional opportunities
to preserve our natural resources and
create jobs that support a range of projects
and boost the local economy. I congratulate
and offer my sincere appreciation to each of
the grant recipients.”
The grants were awarded through the
DAR’s Agricultural Environmental
Enhancement Program (AEEP) and
the Agricultural Energy Grant Program
(ENER). These programs are two of several
within DAR’s Division of Agricultural
Conservation and Technical Assistance
(DACTA), whose mission is to enhance
the viability of agricultural enterprises and
safeguard natural resources through preservation,
environmental stewardship, technol-
ogy, technical assistance and education.
Since 2009, the ENER grant program
has funded 89 projects statewide, providing
growers and producers more than $1.2
million to address energy issues on their
farms. These grants fund projects such as
solar photovoltaic systems for vegetable
and orchard operations, variable speed vacuum
pumps for dairies, reverse osmosis
machines for maple syrup operations, and
thermal blankets for greenhouses
“Helping our farmers adopt new energy
efficient methods protects our environment,
reduces energy use and cuts long-term
energy costs for the agricultural industry,”
said Energy and Environmental Secretary
Richard K. Sullivan Jr., whose office
includes DAR. “I applaud the efforts of
today’s recipients who are partners in our
progress toward a clean energy future.”
The AEEP grant program funds practices
that improve water and air quality and promote
water conservation. Farmers selected
to participate are reimbursed for the
approved costs of materials up to $30,000.
Since 1999, AEEP has funded 387 projects
statewide, providing growers and producers
approximately $4.5 million to address
environmental concerns on their farms.

Family Network
NORTHAMPTON - The Puzzle of Parenting, a free
workshop series designed for parents, grandparents and
guardians of children from birth to kindergarten age continues
at the Palmer/Monson Family Network in Three Rivers
on Tuesdays, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 with “At Your Wit’s End?
Responding to Challenging Behaviors.”
This two-session workshop offers parents, grandparents
and guardians of toddlers and preschool-aged children a
variety of strategies for managing children’s behaviors. The
expanded format provides new perspectives for understanding
behavior, strategies for responding more effectively, and
rich opportunities for discussion about the specific challenges
parents and caregivers face.
A different parenting workshop is scheduled at the
Palmer/Monson Family Network each month through May.
The Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 workshops on responding to challenging
behaviors will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the
Family Network, which is located at 4 Springfield St. in
Three Rivers, across from the Three Rivers Common. Free
childcare is available with advance registration.
Local parents helped select the workshop topics for this
parenting series. The March 21 topic at the Palmer/Monson
Family Network will be “You Showed Each Other What?
Typical Sexuality Development of Preschool Children,” and
will also be held from 6 to 8 p.m. There is no charge for any
of The Puzzle of Parenting workshops. 413.570.3061 is the

Workshops in this series are also offered in Belchertown,
Easthampton, Hatfield, Monson, South Hadley, Ware and
Warren, and free childcare is available at most locations.
Many topics are scheduled at multiple locations so families

as they wish, in any community. More information

NORTHAMPTON - The Collaborative for Educational
Services (formerly the Hampshire Educational Collaborative)
offers free information sessions from 4 to 5 p.m. on the
first Friday of each month. “First Friday” drop-in sessions
are designed to answer questions about educator licensure
and assist prospective educators in mapping a path to
attaining career goals. The next session will be held on Feb.
3 at the Collaborative’s main office at 97 Hawley Street,
Northampton.
The Collaborative is also excited to announce that the CES
Licensure Programs is now partnering with the UMassFive
College Federal Credit Union to provide loans to students
enrolled in the Licensure Programs. Financing is also available
for those pursuing advanced graduate credit through
CES’s higher education partner, Fitchburg State University.
In western Massachusetts, the Collaborative offers Educator
Licensure courses year round in Northampton, Holyoke, and

LOWELL - A Belchertown resident was
among scholarship recipients at UMass
Lowell who recently participated in a
gala event held as part of the university’s
Celebration of Philanthropy.
The first-ever Legacy of Giving luncheon
at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference
Center brought together the generous donors
who have established scholarship funds at
the university and the students who receive
help through those funds.
Junior Hayleigh Walker is among more
than 440 students this year being assisted by
one of the more than 220 endowed scholarships
at the university. Students at UMass
Lowell were awarded nearly $825,000
through endowed scholarships during the
last academic year.
The event gave students the opportunity
to a say personal thank-you to donors and
the benefactors had a chance to meet those
who personally benefit from their generosity.
Many of the donors are alumni of the
university, who remember how important a
helping hand is during college years; others
are faculty and staff who work on campus

GRANBY – The Granby Public
Library is gearing up for its Granby
Waste Reduction Program to be held on
Saturday, Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to noon.

upon the start of a new Waste Reduction
Program (February 2012). Landfill

GARDENER’S CHECKLIST

* Relive the good old days; think nasturtium. This old favorite provides colorful, non-stop blossoms
all summer. Keep in mind that nasturtiums don’t transplant well, so sow (I couldn’t resist
that pairing of words) nasturtiums directly into garden soils in late May. However, I think nasturtiums
are best grown in hanging baskets. In this case, direct sow the seeds into soil-filled
baskets no later than the second week of April to have flowering baskets for Memorial Day.
* Propagate rex begonia by snipping an older but healthy-looking leaf or two from the parent
plant. Use a utility knife or single-edge razor blade to cut off the leaf petiole. Notice that the
leaf veins radiate out from the base of the leaf where the petiole was attached. Cut the leaf into
V-shaped sections so that each resulting piece has a vein running down the middle. Dip the
tip of each V section into a rooting powder (available at garden centers) and stick the section
into a pot filled with coarse sand, leaving the top half of leaf tissue exposed. Be patient! It will
take at least 10 to 16 weeks before the leaf sections root and produce a small plant ready for
potting. Also, try taking leaf cuttings from African violets, snake plant, and gloxinias.
*Stay with shrub roses that are grown from cuttings rather than grafts if planning to add roses
to your landscape this spring. Shrub roses are hardier and require less maintenance than hybrid
or grafted roses. One of the best of the newer shrub roses are those called “Knockout” roses.
*Freeze or dehydrate garlic remaining in storage if some of the bulbs are showing signs of
shriveling and the cloves are turning brown. To freeze garlic, simply chop up the peeled cloves
and put them into ice cube trays in the freezer. The same can be done with onions and leeks;
no blanching is required. We use a commercial electric dehydrator to dry sliced cloves of
garlic, as well as onions. The health-benefitting natural chemicals in garlic are best preserved
by freezing or dehydrating as opposed to pickling.
*Be sure to include culinary herbs as you compile your seed list. Fresh and dried herbs are another
of the food items whose supermarket price seems to have sky-rocketed. Herbs are easy
to grow, either in the garden or in pots which can be kept going indoors through the winter.
* I have to be careful not to get so caught up in studying seed and plant catalogs, dreaming
of the gardens to be, and compiling seed lists that I am not prepared to start the indoor
seeding phase of this year’s gardens. In fact, I’ll be starting some seeds (e.g., sweet Spanish
onions, celery) very soon. That means the old light bulbs in my fluorescent fixtures need to be
replaced, sterile germination mixes need to be purchased, and seed flats and containers need
to be washed and sterilized. The latter I do by soaking the washed containers in a solution
of one part household bleach to nine parts of water. These are then rinsed in clear water. I
also wipe down the propagation bench and surrounding area with the bleach solution. The
most important lesson I’ve learned from many years of starting my own seedlings indoors is:
“Keep it clean.”

that the transformation of The
Lord Jeffery Inn is now complete
and that the Inn is officially open
to the public.
For more than 80 years, The
Lord Jeffery Inn has been an integral
part of Amherst and the surrounding

features 49 state-of-the-art
guestrooms, including three king,
three queen and two double/double
suites. The Inn has added a
2,360-square foot ballroom along
with a tented garden area that can
accommodate up to a 40’ x 80’

In June 2011, the Massachusetts Historical Commission
announced that it had voted and approved the expansion
of the boundaries of the Amherst Central Historic

Jeffery Inn. This vote was the first step in recognizing the

on the National Historic Registry along with such
notable community landmarks as the Emily Dickinson

Josh Lynch, a 17-yearold
Ware High School Senior,
has been playing soccer for
as long as he can remember.
A true athlete, he also enjoys
playing basketball and baseball.
Josh plans to pursue an
education in criminal justice
and plans to play college
soccer as well.
During a recent game,
Josh Lynch Josh sustained a severe
hamstring tear. Hamstring
injuries are common in sports such as soccer; a game
whose physiological demands include sprinting with
speed and power.
The injury landed Josh in the BMLH Emergency
Room and an overnight admission to the hospital. With
a strong work ethic and a determination to return to the
game, Josh worked with the Rehab team to return to the
field.
The physical therapists at BMLH helped this outstanding
student athlete recover by offering therapy that
helped him regain the strength necessary to ensure a
safe and successful return to his favorite game. Not only
did Josh return to the game before the season’s end but
he also scored a goal his first game back!
John Dyjak, of Warren,
is well known for his vibrant
personality, kind heart and a
zest for life. Spending much
of his time giving to others,
Dyjak, retired Principal of the
West Brookfield Elementary
school, was recently recognized
in his hometown as
Citizen of the year.
His many favorite activi-

serves as President of the Rural Improvement
Committee, an active group of citizens that works to
complete projects to better the community. Well known
for annually preparing and serving a Polish Dinner for
nearly 100 West Brookfield Senior Citizens complete
with a Polka dance or two, Dyjak works and plays hard.
But with hard work and play occasional injuries
occur. And each time Dyjak has looked to the experts in
the Baystate Mary Lane Hospital Rehabilitation team to
get him back in the game of life. Over the years several
injuries including a rotator cuff tear, and a fall during a
energetic game of tennis are among the reasons Dyjak
has come back to visit the Rehabilitation staff.

catch rival
Orioles for
upset win

BELCHERTOWN - It was a classic.
And in unforgettable form, sophomore
standout guard Corey Baker converted
a pair of killer three-point field
goals to spark Granby to a 63-58 upset
victory over Belchertown in Bi-County
League action Thursday.
Granby (6-2) led it virtually the entire
game, utilizing a pair of defensivelysparked
rallies to gain a working margin.
The 8-2 Orioles lost their second
consecutive game.
Fighting off an off-shooting night, the
Orioles star capped a furious 15-3 rally
with a long 3-pointer to knot the game,
58-58.
However, on the ensuing possession,
Baker countered, coming off of a screen
to answer with another three.
It ultimately gave the Rams the victory.
After Belchertown had taken an early
4-3 lead, Aaron Gaj and Tyler Ellard
(18 points) sparked a 15-6 rally to give
the Rams the lead and a surge of confidence.
It forced the Orioles into an
uncharacteristic flurry of turnovers and
with its team caught in a transition game
it didn’t necessarily covet, Belchertown
also retreated into an unfamiliar defensive
strategy.
With Mike Tommila fighting foul
trouble, Belchertown abandoned its fiery
man-to-man defense for a 2-3 zone.
It wouldn’t work.
“It was something we tried but it
didn’t do the job,” said Eric Adzima.
“They were shooting the ball too effectively.”
Zach Parsons (24 points, 15
rebounds) played a superb game. But
it only served to bring out the best of
Granby’s frontcourt players. Gaj and
Ellard were key factors. They worked
especially hard to close off passing
lanes to Parsons and drew Tommila into
foul trouble. They then also went back
to the offensive and defensive boards to
give the Rams excellent scoring opportunities.

BELCHERTOWN - After it had fallen
to a season-low 1-5 record, Belchertown
refused to concede anything in girls basketball.
And it came back to the defense. The latest
example: Belchertown scored its most
important win of the season on Thursday
with a crucial Bi-County East victory over
Cathedral, 39-23.
The Orioles best defensive effort of the
season limited the Panthers to single digit
scoring in three of the four quarters played.
It was no accident perhaps that the
player coach Jason Woodcock called
“our best athlete,” Jillian Lund stood out.

pulled away, winning the fourth quarter,
16-5, for the win.
It was a 2-0 week which included another
win at McCann Tech, 49-30. The Orioles
have now evened their record at 5-5. Once
again, they could become a major factor for
playoff consideration.
The tournament is still six weeks away.
But for this rebuilding team, this recent
stretch of solid cohesive basketball has provided
hope.

HOLYOKE – There have been very few strategies successful
enough to stop the states most prolific division 3A
hockey team over the last three years.
Three Western Mass titles and two state championships
later, the Agawam Brownies may have briefly solved South
Hadley’s dominance.
The Tigers, who were known as the Knights before moving
from Holyoke to South Hadley this season, celebrated
a banner-raising on Saturday before trouncing Chicopee
10-3. The Tigers also beat Central 7-0 last week.
But against the Brownies, a team South Hadley beat 3-2
earlier this season and knocked off twice in the postseason
over the last two years, the Tigers could only net one goal.
Agawam survived a dominant offensive attack by the
South Hadley in the first period and slowed the game down
with a hard hitting, chippie affair at a packed and electric
Fitzpatrick Arena on Wednesday.
Both teams combined for 25 penalties, most of which
came in the second and third period as the game had no
flow for the final two periods.
The result was a game-tying power play goal by
Agawam’s Cam Rivest early in the third. Joe Mercandante
earned the assist.
Agawam became the first team to hand the Tigers anything
but a win with a 1-1 tie. The Tigers slipped to 7-0-1
overall while the Brownies improved to 5-3-1 this season.
The Brownies simply turned a hockey game into more
of a boxing match. And the Tigers fell into the trap.

Lady Gaels fall to Palmer

CHICOPEE – For the past several years,
the Holyoke Catholic girls basketball has
started slowly and then come on strongly
as the season progressed. This year that
scenario seems to have taken a bit of a
reversal. After winning their first three
games, the Lady Gaels dropped the net
four and with a 55-36 loss to Palmer this
week, they fell below .500 as the season
approaches the midpoint.
They were playing well for the first 5:00
of the game and held a 10-6 lead. Then
Palmer came alive. The Lady Panthers ran
off 11 straight points to end the first quarter
to lead 17-10 and then added another seven
in the first 3:30 of the second quarter. The
game had gotten away from Catholic in
a hurry. They still trailed by seven at the
break. Scoring just 13 points in the second
half, the Lady Gaels were unable to make
any headway and lost by 19 points.
Logan Smith had four of the Gaels first
six points as she played well under the
basket and along with baskets by Danielle
Easton and Melissa Laflamme, the Catholic
had an 8-4 lead. Palmer got its points
on two free throws by Karyce Welch and
basket by Morrissa Heilman. After a pair
of free throws by Katie Klejna, the Lady
Panthers took over. Welch hit a three to
close the gap to one. Alyssa Darling then
scored three baskets in a minute, to coming
within 5 seconds of one another. Heilman
scored at the buzzer to make it a 17-10
game.
Alyssa Jasak started the second quarter
part of the run a minute in and her basket
was followed by a trey from Halie Laviolette.
The Gaels finally got on the board after more
than 4:00 on a three by Kieran Ramsey. That
was the beginning of a Gaels’ run that seemingly
got them back into the game. There
were baskets by Kyra Robins, LaFlamme and
Easton along with two Ramsey free throws
offset only by a Palmer free throws and the
score was 25-21. Welch answered that with a
three and Darling followed to make it a ninepoint
game. Laflamme got a putback in the
closing seconds and it was 30-23 going into
the half.
Easton opened the second half with a
basket, but he response was a Welch three.
The teams traded baskets with Robins scoring
three times and Welch hitting another
from beyond the arc. When Taylor Dupuis
scored on a layup and free throw to end
the third quarter, Palmer had it lead up to
43-32.
They had another quarter opening run to
start the fourth, scoring the first 10 points,
Laviolette had four, Dupuis three to give
them a 20-point lead with just under 4:00
to go. The teams traded points the rest of
the way.

Both teams traded terrific chances in
the fist period but the Tigers had the better
opportunities. South Hadley, which put 36
shots on Cory Pinkham, received production
from its top line with less than 20 seconds
left in the first period.
Spencer Nawrocki scored from Doug
Sattler and Chris Menard as the Tigers took
a 1-0 lead after the first period.
But things changed quickly in the second.
Agawam and South Hadley had twoman
advantages on the power play. It
seemed every time a player came out of the
box someone else went in. And at times,
the penalty box was full of players from
each side.
Both coaches barked at the referees, who
were trying to control a hard-hitting game
that may have produced a few injuries, at
least some bumps and bruises.
The second period yielded over 10 penalties.
Menard and Sattler both had solid
chances later in the period, but Pinkham,
who stopped 35 shots, was terrific in net.
Yet there was no flow. The Tigers
couldn’t really play the grind out game that
has led to so much success. The game was
simply too slow due to the constant stops
for penalties. This favored Agawam, which

In other action, the Gaels fell hard to
Sabis, 76-22, as they fell behind 19-2 after
one and 40-5 at the half. They were never
in this game. Robins had eight to lead the
way. Holyoke Catholic rebounded somewhat
with a 33-25 win over St. Joseph’s.
Klejna had five of the team’s nine points
and they opened up a seven-point lead.
LaFlamme had 13 points to lead the way.

The second period went scoreless and the
Brownies finally took advantage of a power
play opportunity early in the third.
The third period proved worse. Even
more penalties and stoppages and a few
scrums saw more players in the penalty
box.
Both teams had power play chances,
including Agawam’s with about 4:00 left.
But the Tigers defense played well in front
of Devin Hoagland, who only needed 23
saves in net to keep his team in contention
for the win.
The best chance for South Hadley to win
came when Menard found Jeff Beauregard
in the high slot. The junior defenseman
ripped a shot on goal but Pinkham turned
away that chance. Hoagland made a relatively
easy save on the final shot of the
game.
Agawam charged the net and some
punches were thrown at the end, leaving
many to imagine what will come down the
road if these two teams meet in the post
season.
South Hadley hosts Turners Falls on
Monday afternoon before traveling to
Westfield to meet St. Mary.
Agawam will meet Ludlow and
Greenfield in the coming week.

half by Renaissance

CHICOPEE – The boys basketball
game between Holyoke Catholic and
Renaissance was played as if it was two
games. The Gaels led throughout the
entire first half and took a 10-point lead
into the break.
The second half was the complete
opposite, as the Phoenix caught up by the
end of the third, and then they took the
lead early in the fourth and won going
away, by a 64-53 score.
With Nate Powers edging ever closer to
the 1,000-point mark, it was all Catholic
in the first half. He came into the game
needing 54 points and got 12 in the first
quarter alone. His scoring pace slowed
down, but he wound up with 33 on the
night and needs just 35 to achieve the
milestone.
The Gaels came out of the gate with
a three just forty seconds in by Aiden
Sullivan. Less than a minute later, Powers
got his first points of the night on a
layup. Holyoke Catholic had a 5-0 lead.
Renaissance scored the next eight points
over a two-minute stretch. That ended
with a game-tying three by Powers to make
it 8-8 with 3:30 to go. Powers scored two
more baskets in the next minute to give
Catholic a four-point lead. A five-point
run put the Phoenix back in front, before
Powers three regained a 15-13 advantage
for the Gaels just before the buzzer.
Holyoke Catholic scored the first seven
points of the second quarter, and when
Sullivan hit a three it was 22-13. Powers
answered a Renaissance basket with a
three and the Gaels led by 10. The teams
would trade points over the final 5:30 as
John McCoy had four and Powers another
basket to end the half. The score was
31-21.
He made it a 12-point lead with a pair
of free throws to begin the second half.
After the Phoenix scored six in a row,
Jeff Laprade and Joe Kos got back-toback
baskets and then Powers answered
a Renaissance free throw with a jumper
to make it an 11-point game with 3:33
to play before the break. The Phoenix
would then score the next 10 points to
close it to one point at the half.
When Renaissance opened the fourth
quarter, with two treys, they had scored
16 unanswered points and had a five-point
lead. Kass got two of them back, but
the Phoenix responded with another 12
points in the first 3:00 of the fourth. Over
9:00, Renaissance had scored 28 of 30
points and led in the game 56-41. Powers
stopped that run, but for the reminder
of the game the teams would effectively
trade points, leaving the Phoenix with an
11-point victory.
In addition to Powers 33 points, Kass
had 10, eight coming in the second half.
Powers 33 points leaves him needing 21
points and he can easily get that in the
Gaels next game at Gateway on Jan. 13.
If he is still short at that time, Catholic
returns home to face South Hadley on
Jan. 18.

“We’ve played hard from the start of the
season,” said the coach. “We started the
season off slow but truthfully, we were in
every ballgame. The younger players have
come on and the seniors (Jessica Karrasch,
Jess Burke) have shown great leadership.”
Kopacz has been the main anchor of the
team from the start of the season, a terrific
center who is averaging close to a doubledouble
in points and rebounds. It included a
career-high 19-rebound effort against Ware.
But Lund’s return from a respiratory illness
(which sidelined her for two of the
team’s losses) has been a key. Lund is an
important player on the wing and as mentioned,
plays excellent defense.
Against McCann, Tea’ Spellacy scored
a game-high 15 points and Kopacz and
Jillian Cavanuagh won the inside battle
against the Hornets’ very good swing player,
Mary Nguyen in the victory over the
Hornets, 49-30.
Kopacz had 10 points and 13 rebounds
and Cavanaugh added 11 boards.
Cavanaugh’s emergence of late has also
factored into the Orioles’ win-streak, which
has now reached four.

In a key stretch when Granby expanded
a 32-28 lead to 50-40, Gaj and Villard
accounted for six field goals and five
boards. “Not only were (Gaj and Villard)
defending well, they were strong off of the
offensive boards, too,” noted Sheehan.
It was interesting. Last season, Granby
came on strong at the end of the year
as Baker, Gaj and Villard grew increasingly
confident under the stewardship of
now departed senior, Clayton Sapowsky.
Sapowsky became the first 1,000-point
scorer in school history. It’s a classic case
of committee scoring, now.
“They packed it in,” said acting coach
Bob Beauregard, the team’s respected
JV coach filling in for coach Claude
Humphrey. “We didn’t do a good enough
job reading it.”
Humphrey was suspended for one game
as a result of a heated argument with officials
after the defeat in Palmer on Jan. 6.
Of course, Baker’s shooting from the
perimeter provided a powerful punch. His
three at the halftime buzzer gave the team
a serious boost heading into the late stages.
It triggered the aforementioned 18-12 surge

“It was difficult,” said the junior star.
“We’re just used to having coach Humphrey
there. Coach (Bob) Beauregard did an
excellent job, but it was different.”
The Orioles were surprised by the Rams
ceaseless energy, but responded. Paced
by the wing play of Chris Ladd (through
held to five points, Ladd contributed eight
rebounds and six steals), Belchertown
fought its way back into it before halftime.
It set up the first of Baker’s two crucial
field goals.
The Orioles had tied it twice before the
intermission, once on a spectacular offensive
rebound by Parsons, 25-25 and then on
another by Ladd. But then at the buzzer,
Baker evaded a defender with a ball fake
and converted a long three-point field goal
and a 30-26 halftime lead.
Afterward, Sheehan smiled. “Any shot
we hit is a big one,” he noted. “Corey is a
special player, a sophomore who is a leader
on our team.”
Sparked by the way they had responded
to the Orioles’ own rally, Granby flew
after the intermission. Andy Gifford, who
played a sensational all-court game, ignited
a five-point run after Belchertown had narrowed
the lead to two. That gave the Rams
a 39-34 advantage.
They then extended it out to a game-high
55-43 lead at the 7:07 mark of the fourth
quarter.
“They forced us into turnovers,” said
Beauregard. “We turned the ball over and
we weren’t able to move the ball side to
side the way we usually do. We fought
back however and I give our kids credit for
that.”
“We knew that Granby would come in
here fired up,” said Ladd. “They had a
good gameplan against us, getting Mike
“Jillian (Cavanaugh) has helped out a
lot,” said the coach. “We can go to her
when we need more of a contribution from
our ‘4’ or ‘5’ spots. The team has done a
great job, collectively. Even when we had
been losing, they never gave in to it. Their
attitude has been positive.”
Spellacy of course has been a revelation.
A freshman who was seeing her first varsity
action of any sort this season, Tea’ had
to play more minutes than expected early
because an injury to Burke.
But she came in with an oncourt swagger.
Spellacy scored career highs in four
straight games, including the 15 against
McCann Tech.
Belchertown hosted Holyoke Catholic
this week before a crucial Bi-County East
clash with Palmer. Before the year began,
the coach felt that Palmer had to be regarded
as one of the favorites to get out of the
league and into a higher seed. But with its
resurgence, the Orioles now also have to
be regarded as a contender. It’s a matchup
between Palmer’s prolific backcourt of
Alyssa Darling and Halie Laviolette and
Belchertown’s balance. The winner moves
into first place in the league with seven
games remaining.
to give the Rams a 50-40 lead. But the ball
movement and Baker’s freedom beyond
the arc was set up by the Rams’ strategy,
alluded to by Sheehan.
“We wanted to spread (Belchertown)
out,” said the Rams coach. “We know how
good they are defensively. The idea was
to take it to the rack and then if it wasn’t
available, to kick it out.”
It was then that Baker, a sophomore, was
able to convert his decisive 3-point field
goals.
Granby had the upper hand virtually
throughout and, said Chris Ladd, it played
a factor. “At the beginning, we played
flat,” he said. “When we didn’t play hard,
it was hard to come back.”
Granby headed into a Hoophall finale
Monday against St. Joseph’s.
Belchertown had work to do, suffering its
second consecutive loss after right straight
wins to open the season.
“It’s at a point where you find out what
you’re made of,” Parsons said. “We just
have to go back to practice and work even
harder.”

into foul trouble. What happened was that
we fell too far behind. It took its toll.”
Utilizing a press and its will to win,
Belchertown fought its way back. Tyler
Verville (nine points, nine assists) and
Parsons led the rally. Then, with just 1:40
remaining, Ladd tied it with a catch-and–
shoot 3-pointer from the left wing.
“I felt it,” noted Ladd. “Even if I was
shooting bas the rest of the night, it felt
good.”
With the gym the loudest of the night,
Granby responded. Sheehan had used
a timeout before to set up a play inside,
but shunned it now. The guards worked a
weave outside and it ended u in the hands
of Baker. Tied at 58-58, the sophomore
guard unleashed a long three from the right
point. It went in, without touching the rim.
“We played together all night,” said
Baker. “We played to our potential. I came
off of a screen and got an open look. It just
went in.”
With the pressure on in these final seconds,
it was left to the Rams’ inside players
to seal the triumph. The Orioles had an
open look inside, but Gaj soared over from
the weakside to block it.
“This was such a great win for us,” said
Baker. “We knew how Belchertown is. We
go it done.”
“This is so rewarding,” said Sheehan.
“We haven’t played that well in this gym
for a long time. It’s strange. With all of
the great performances we had from Corey,
Aaron, Andy and Tyler, I also give a lot of
the credit to our bench players. Even the
guys who didn’t get into the game helped
out to an incredible extent. They were off
the bench cheering our every move. It was
truly a team effort.”

Pioneers initial tryouts a success

with turnout and talent
LUDLOW – With the initial tryouts nearly complete,
the response has been better than expected. The
Pioneers were able to take advantage of the exceptional
weather and completed an outdoor session at Lusitano
Stadium.
“By having an outdoor session this allowed us to
evaluate more talent and see what the players could
bring to the table on a regulation field. We can only see
a small portion of the skills in an indoor session,” commented
General Manager Greg Kolodziey.
The Pioneers were able to see over 50 players over
the course of the two sessions.
Players traveled from all over New England to show
off their abilities for the Pioneers coaching staff. “We
are fortunate that former players of the Pioneers are
assistant or head coaches of teams throughout New
England and their ability to recommend quality players
from their programs to potentially play for the Pioneers
is exciting. They really care about the success of the
Pioneers,” stated new head coach Federico Molinari.

Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame Committee has made their
Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame selections for 2012.
This class was chosen from many outstanding individuals
who were championed by family, friends, fellow athletes
and coaches. As a member of our first Hall of Fame
class, these candidates stood out among all alumni from
HCHS and our four founding schools (St. Jerome’s, Holy
Rosary, Sacred Heart and Precious Blood), creating a lasting
impression on our Hall of Fame Committee.

Meaghan Sullivan had f14 rebounds for Granby. The
Rams, who encountered Monson’s pressing game, had
taken an early 13-9 lead. But the Mustangs quickly retaliated
and had leads of seven points in the second quarter.
But Granby battled back to draw within one point at the
half, 23-22.
“We’ve been able to get a lot of contributions from different
players,” said the coach. “This was a game in which
we needed everyone.”
In the second half, it appeared that the 6-4 Mustangs
would be able to pull away. Paced by Kate Sweeney (15
points) and Jamie Knochel (eight) and its entire roster in
the scoring column, the Mustangs went ahead by as many
as 10 points early in the fourth quarter.
However, the Rams battled back. They were able to
force the overtime sessions on key field goals by Menard,
Alyssa Boardway and Sullivan.
“We’ve had so many players step up for us during this
stretch,” said the coach. “They’ve matured a lot. Last
year, I don’t think we would have been able to withstand
the pressure. Monson’s an excellent basketball team.
They’ve been through a lot of games like this.”
In contrast, the Lady Rams, who had come on late in the
season a year ago, now have found more ways to win dur-
nized as an outstanding, even extraordinary, athlete who
exemplified the HCHS tradition of sportsmanship and
meritorious service to the athletic program, and to the
enduring legacy of Holyoke Catholic sports.

ing their winning streak. In this one, Boardway converted
a key field goal to get the team into the overtime.
The game was tied 44-44 at the end of regulation and
knotted again at 48-48 at the end of the first OT.
“It’s been different for Alyssa,” said the coach of the
team’s senior captain. “She’s had to do so much for our
team the last three years, including leading us in scoring.
But this year, we’ve had a number of different players step
up. Noelle has played extremely well; Brianna Mercier,
Kiley Baran and Rebecca Sapoukey have all played an
important role.
“Rebecca has played great for us. She’s given us a real
boost up front, and taken the pressure off of Alyssa. It’s
been sort of an adjustment for (Alyssa). But she’s come on
late for us and has been an excellent leader.”
In addition, Sullivan, the team’s leading scorer, and
Brooke Labrie, the team’s point guard, have continued to
give the team star-quality performances all year.
“Meaghan’s our leading scorer,” said the coach of the
5’10” freshman small forward. “But people don’t realize
that she’s an excellent rebounder.”
He added, “And though Brooke doesn’t always score
(against the Mustangs, Sullivan had 10 and Labrie six),
she does do many other things: Her understanding of the
game, her passing, and her defense are indispensable to our
team. We wouldn’t where we are without Brooke.”
This is another telling week for Granby with their game
against the 9-1 Indians.
Falcons make
donations to
youth hockey

SPRINGFIELD –The Springfield Falcons Hockey Club
is very proud of its support of youth hockey in the Greater
Springfield area. The Falcons have supported the Greater
Springfield Youth Hockey League over the past 18 years
through various player visits to youth hockey practices,
monetary donations and premier sponsorship of postseason
playoffs and championships.
The Falcons are very excited and very proud to present
USA Hockey ONEGOAL hockey equipment sets to
four GSL associations. These ONEGOAL equipment sets
contain the basic equipment needed for any youngster who
might be interested in learning how to play the game of
hockey. Our four GSL associations have quality Learn to
Skate programs and these ONEGOAL equipment sets will
now allow youngsters, in the communities that these associations
represent, the opportunity to try out the game of
hockey at a minimal cost.
The Falcons recently made a special presentation at
one of their home games with the four local youth hockey
associations, Falcons’ Senior Vice President Bob Oliver
and Falcons players Wade MacLeod and Cody Goloubef.

BLA signups continue
BELCHERTOWN - The Belchertown Lacrosse
Association (BLA) Board is excited to announce that
spring registration is open. Children from first grade
through eighth grade in Belchertown and surrounding
towns that do not have lacrosse programs are encouraged
to register. All forms are available online at
belchertownlacrosse.org.
To continue to encourage younger children to try
this fast-growing sport, the Board voted to again waive
BLA fees for the Initiation/Learn to Play (first and second
grades) coed level as well as the Bantam (third and
fourth grades) girls level. In order to pay for additional
equipment, field fees, referee fees and other required
expenses, the Board voted to increase all other BLA fees.
For the 2012 season, the BLA fee for Senior and
Junior levels is $120 and Bantam boys level is $105.
A US Lacrosse fee of $25 is required for all levels.
Game scheduling is due to start in mid-February, and
the season begins in late March/early April.
BLA is planning various fundraising activities this year,
including the annual car wash and cash calendars. Website
sponsorships for local businesses are available for $100.

be confident in their self.”
He said the course includes education hours as well
as hands-on training. He said there are five components
to the course including the educational aspect, teaching
them to make their own decisions, depend on one self,
self-realization and personal power.
“If they had to, they could,” he said.
Last week was the final simulation in which the
girls used what they learned throughout the semester
to fight off an attacker, or two or three, in some simulations.
The attackers were played by Belchertown Police
Officers as well as two Chicopee physical education
teachers/RAD instructors, Alex Efstratios and Mel
Sasser.
“It’s so worth while for these girls,” said Sasser.
Junior Kierra Krzcuik said she signed up for the
course because she thought having the skills taught was
a good idea. She said just knowing she could protect
herself made a big difference.
“I have definitely learned a lot,” she said. “I think this
would be helpful for a lot of people.”
Katlyn Nobre, a senior, said following one of her
simulated attacks, “It was crazy. It felt really real.”
Nobre said she “absolutely feels prepared” if an
attack were to happen. She said it was important for her
to take the course because she will be going off to college
next year and wants to be able to protect herself.
“I figured I need some kind of empowerment,” she
said.

continue to be in agriculture that will have crops growing on
it,” said Jonathan Spiegel, who is on the NESFI board.
According Spiegel, this site could serve as an example to
farmers throughout the northeast who need a way to make
their land more profitable, without sacrificing their focus on
farming. He said that this solar array project will have major
benefits not just to NESFI, but for all farmers who can enable
more clean energy without sacrificing their land.
There has been a lot of opposition in Belchertown to this
project. On Monday, Dec. 11 the Board of the Selectmen
unanimously voted to recommend that the Planning Board
deny the site plan proposal.
The major issue that numerous residents, many of whom
appeared at the public hearing, have with the proposed arrays
is the location of the hayfield they will be built on, which is
near many privately owned homes. Several citizens at the
hearing argued that this project involves placing what is essentially
an industrial complex in a residential neighborhood.
“Is this a rural community or an industrial park?” asked one
concerned citizen.
One of the greatest concerns that has been brought up
repeatedly is the impact that arrays will have on the view of
the area’s natural beauty. There is a range of mountains and
vistas that overlook the area, and residents are worried that
the arrays will be an eyesore. Abutters also expressed fears
the solar arrays may lower property values.
Spiegel responded to these concerns by explaining that
the array will hardly be visible to those driving up Jackson
St. until they reach the Department of Public Works Garage,
when a corner will become visible. The arrays will be partially
visible on George Hannum Street and Hamilton Street,
but it will not have nearly as much impact on the view as
residents may believe.
NESFI Director Judy Gillam said there are plans to have an
outside company draft a model that will show a roadside view
of what the arrays will look like to people driving along the
road. She said this will be completed in approximately four
to six weeks and she feels that this will alleviate many of the
concerns.
As for the obstructions to the abutter’s view of the vista,
Spiegel told the crowd at the hearing that NESFI plans to
work individually with each property owner to ensure that
there is proper natural screening installed.
Despite these assurances, many members of the crowd
were still opposed to the plans. Melissa Desautels, who was
one of the citizens who attended the hearing, said that there
has never been a project of this size and type located so close
to a residential neighborhood.
Residents at the hearing brought up fears about the health
concerns living near the arrays could cause, since it technically
emits electromagnetic fields. Spiegel responded by stating
that numerous studies including one conducted by goodcompany.com,
showed no discernible link between low-level
magnetic fields and adverse health issues.
Furthermore, he stated that this project will produce very few
EMF’s and that a person will absorb more radiation by standing
next to their toaster oven. He told the crowd that once the arrays
are completely they will not cause any health issues.
The counterargument that was brought up during the hearing
is that research 25 years from now may prove that living
in close proximity to a solar plant is bad for a person’s health,
but by then it may be too late.
Legally, NESFI’s plans are considered what Planning
Board Chairman George Synan called a “by-right project.”
This means the Planning Board can’t deny the site plan based
on whether or not it is popular. It must approve the plans
unless it finds that the project poses a threat to the health,
safety and welfare of the community.
“We can’t deny the proposal just because we don’t like it,”
said Synan.
The phrase “health, safety and welfare,” is where the grey
area looms. The Planning Board must consider whether or
not the issues that residents opposed to the project brought up
are serious enough to warrant denying the project. It is not the
Planning Board’s job to determine whether building the array
is a good idea, only to review the site plan and determine if it
is harmful.
There will certainly be a much more discussion on this
topic as both sides will continue to research and refine their
points. The public hearing was scheduled to be continued on
Feb. 28 at Lawrence Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m.

According to the Western Mass Food
Bank, more people are using soup kitchens
and food pantries for the first time.
“We’re seeing two to 10 new families
every week,” said Tracey Levy, program
director of the Amherst Survival Center,
one beneficiary of the CAN! event.
In addition, folks who haven’t needed
food assistance for two or three years are
coming back, according to the Food Bank.
Traditionally, families turned to the emergency
food network just till they could get
back on their feet. Now, however, relying
on food pantries is the “new normal” for a
lot of people.
But isn’t unemployment down? Yes, but
the need for food assistance is based on the
kinds of jobs people are getting, said Levy.
Many have part-time or minimum-wage
positions. Someone making $10 an hour
is “counted as working,” she said, but cannot
support a family and is not eligible for
other assistance.
All proceeds from the CAN! drive will
go to the three Belchertown food pantries,
located at the United Church of Christ, St.

Freechild said the support group took
an inventory of titles based on what they
had found helpful themselves and other
basic books they found helpful.
“They wanted everyone to have access
to these titles,” said Freechild, adding that
going to the library to read them is an
excellent option for such a sensitive issue.
With limited funding the group decided
to pool their own friends and family for
the money needed to purchase the books.
“They realized that everyone they knew
would want to contribute to the cause,”
said Freechild. “They found a creative
way to make it happen and went with it.”
Freechild said education and awareness
is the first step toward safety and healing.
“As survivors, these women noted the
crucial role that written materials about
domestic abuse had played in their own
processes of freeing themselves from
abuse,” she said. “ So, they decided
that they wanted to make it easier for
other people to access books about these
issues by increasing up-to-date resources
on domestic violence and sexual assault

One survivor in the group explained her
involvement in this project saying, “I’m
doing this so people who are in the situation
I was stuck in for years can know that
there is a way out.”
Freechild said it is important for victims
of domestic abuse to not feel alone. She
said by reading others’ stories, it helps
“break the sense of aloneness.”

Responding to the pantries’ requests for
more high-protein foods, CAN! is urging
supporters to donate tuna, salmon, peanut
butter, and canned soups and stews.
Canned fruits and vegetables, toiletries,
paper goods and pet food also are welcome.
All items should be in non-glass
packaging.
The three town pantries also have been
receiving an average of 400 pounds of food
a month through an ongoing drive supported
by Stop & Shop. Shoppers can drop
items in two bins at the front of the store
or purchase special boxes or bags of food
prepared by the retailer.
Donations typically drop at this time of
year, said Bob Livingston, a CAN! volunteer
who coordinates the ongoing drive.
There is a big surge during the holidays,
but that food is gone by now and the pantries’
shelves need replenishment.
Belchertown CAN! is a nonpartisan
group of individuals and businesses that
formed in December 2008 in response to
a national call for public service. It is not
affiliated with any political or religious
organization.

have learned from their own experiences to
empower others to insist on healthy, abusefree
relationships,” said Freechild. “They
are so committed to doing whatever they
can to make sure that others, especially
younger people, know that they do not
have to suffer in silence.”
The Domestic Abuse Support Group
in Belchertown meets at the Belchertown
United Church of Christ, which has generously
provided meeting space, a group
facilitator, and other supportive resources
for the group. The group is open to survivors
of domestic abuse from all surrounding

with twin great grandchildren, Jacob and

Three brothers, Kenneth, Richard and
Robert have predeceased her and many
nieces and nephews on the Hatch side of
the family will also miss her. Surviving
relatives are scattered across the country.

loved riding and showing the horses and
cattle her father bred, imported and traded.
She also participated in the family’s dairy
business by raising and showing prizewinning
dairy cattle, exhibiting at Eastern
States Exposition and as far as Ormstown,
Quebec. Marion happily took her last trail
ride with her daughter at the age of 82. In
later years she enjoyed sewing, gardening
and entertaining family at their home
in Belchertown. Services will be private,
and Marion will be laid to rest in Island
Pond Cemetery, Ludlow, MA with her husband,
James. In lieu of flowers, donations
to the Lewy Body Dementia Association
made in her name are appreciated. Beers

Live frog exhibit opens with family activities January Events at
Wistariahurst Museum
SPRINGFIELD – A day of family activities will mark
the opening of the special “exh-ribit” Frogs: A Chorus of
Colors at the Springfield Science Museum on Saturday,
Jan. 21. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
and are free with museum admission unless noted.
Special exhibits
• Frogs: A Chorus of Colors brings visitors into the colorful,
sound-filled world of frogs. Fifteen different habitats
filled with rock ledges, live plants and waterfalls are home
to a variety of frogs from around the world. The exhibit
also includes videos of frogs in the wild, recorded frog
calls, and interactive stations that reveal fascinating frog
facts. ($5 special exhibition fee for all visitors ages 3 and
up in addition to museum admission.)
• Old Masters to Monet: Three Centuries of French
Painting, 50 masterpieces that provide a comprehensive
history of French art with paintings by Monet, Degas,
Renoir, Pissarro, Van Gogh and other artists, many of
whom are also represented in the permanent collections of
the D’Amour Museum. (There is a special exhibition fee
of $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12-17 in addition
to museum admission to view Old Masters to Monet.
Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a paying
adult.)
A combination ticket to see both special exhibits is
$12.50 for adults; $7.50 for children ages 12-17; and $5
for children 3-11.
Performances
• “The Frog Prince” by the Pumpernickel Puppets, 1
p.m. - Young Prince Tad has been teasing the forest creatures
so a magic tree turns him into a frog to teach him a
lesson. Along the way he meets a princess who could turn
him back with a kiss.
• Teaching Creatures presents “Hooray for Herps”, 10:45
a.m. to 12:45 p.m. - A live animal demonstration with both
reptiles and amphibians.

• Hands-on art activity – Color your own frog, 10:30

January Gallery Exhibition—
Matt Evald Johnson: Recent Figurations
Matt Johnson is inspired by the urban/industrial scene,
which supplies him with subject, materials, processes
and narrative. Johnson’s recent work being shown in
the carved steel gallery is an assemblage and manipulation
of raw material. These materials used for the
sculpture in Recent Figurations have been reclaimed
from the urban and industrial environments that record
some of the history of their previous lives. Johnson,
who works alone and without heavy equipment, relies
on his physical labor to produce work that merges grace
and brutality, producing unexpected objects. Johnson’s
work has been shown throughout New England and the
Northeast. Works are on view in the gallery through
January. Admission to the gallery $3.
Learn the techniques of telling a fascinating tale at
Wistariahurst Museum during this inspiring workshop!
Activities include viewing examples of portraits painted
several decades ago, and learning the different ways
artists and family members used to tell the story of a
family. Scouts will discover how to figure out the story
behind a picture and apply their own ancestral details
when creating a portrait of their family. Reservations are
required. $7 per scout
Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. - “The Skinner Family Gift
to Holyoke; 100 Years Young”
The Skinner Chapel at the United Congregational
Church will celebrate its centennial in February. In 1909
the Skinner Chapel cornerstone was laid as an addition
to the Second Congregational Church. The chapel was
dedicated to “The Glory of God and the loving memory
of William and Sarah E. Skinner” in 1912. Join church
historian Rev. Art Stanley as he shares the story about
this Skinner Family Gift to Holyoke and reveals the
remarkable and beautiful architecture contained within
