Illustrious Potentate John H. Gailey
Welcome to Spring???
According to the calendar we are supposed to be
in the season of Spring but it sure did not seem like it on April
1st. Despite the snowstorm, Basket Bingo was a huge success!
Great job by the many who worked hard on this annual event.
That same evening, AROK Chapter of the Daughter of the Nile
installed Heather Mayo as their new Queen. We wish Queen
Heather a most successful year.
Have you heard that a Circus was in town? The 64th
presentation of the Kora Shrine Circus started on April 14
in Lewiston and finished in Augusta on April 22nd. Thanks
to all the Nobles and their ladies for the help they gave
throughout the week. Without you it would have been a real
struggle. It was great to see the tigers and elephants back in
the program.
Rounding out April activities was the Concert in the Park
sponsored by the Kora Band. Always a nice afternoon of music by
various musical groups. That same evening there was a Painting
Party held in the Oasis as a fundraiser for the Cycle Corps.
May ushers in Grand Lodge meetings on May1-3 in
Northport and a Stamp ‘in Up Party scheduled the evening of
May 12 in the Oasis. Please check you Kora Konnections and
the last Sands for more details. Reservations can be made with
Kate in the office. Finally, the Potentate and First Lady will be
on their trip to South Dakota May19-25 with 40 Nobles, wives,
and friends.
Candidates! Candidates! Candidates! We need candidates
to make our Summer Ceremonial (June 10) a memorable
event. Please get their applications into the office as soon as
possible. Also, don’t forget to sign up with Kate for meals that
weekend. Please refer to the information in this Sands and or
Spring Sands for details. We are looking forward to a great time
in Skowhegan. Parade steps off at 10:00 am.
July is the time for our Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic
at Thornton Academy in Saco on July 15th. In addition to
the game there are plans to include a community and Shrine
parade and a Walk for Love earlier in the day. This is a big
hospital fundraiser so your support is important to its success.
Now to the NSA Field Days in Ottawa August 17-20. Hopefully
you have made a room reservation by now. If not, call the office
and let us work with you securing one. The information for
meals and schedule of events is published within this Sands.
Looking forward to a great time in Canada.
We will finish up August with our Kora Ride In, another
hospital fundraiser. Please mark the date – August 26 on your
calendar. There will motorcycles, ATV’s, Classic Cars and many
vendors available for your pleasure.
I would like to take a minute to share a thought with those
Nobles who have not paid their dues this year. I know in our
busy lives we tend to forget things and it might be our dues. I
am encouraging all Nobles who have not paid their dues for
2017 to please do so by July 1st. I have picked July 1st because I
have been told that Imperial will be sending out the 2018 dues
letters in August. I don’t want to see anyone in double jeopardy.
Your First Lady and I look forward to spending many great
times with you as we go about our Shrine business and activities
this year. Have a safe summer.
MEMBERSHIP RAMBLINGS
By Sonny Jutras, Membership Chairman
As we quickly approach mid-year, we have already had
many great events at Kora. The installation of Kora
Officers In January with a new twist. Unit Directors were installed
at the same time as the Divan officers. What a great idea. If we
are to move into the future, we need to adapt to change.
Robbie Burns night in February, this was an awesome night
put on by the Highlanders.
Also in February was the Kora Family and Friends Valentines
party. This event was great and well attended. The kids (and
adults) had a great time.
The Kora Business Meeting in March was also very well
attended, and a great meal was had by all.
As I write this, we are coming into Circus week. We hope to
later report, an awesome Circus. We have all the ingredients
needed to accomplish this, even the weather looks good.
There is much fun yet to come; the Summer Ceremonial in
Skowhegan, the Ride-in at Twitchels Airport with Membership
Appreciation included for this fun day and the Northeast
Shrine Association Meeting in Ottawa.
DISPATCH FROM THE
CELESTIAL LODGE
By Joseph Woodbury, Chaplain
In the previous issue of the Sands, we were introduced to
the Regius Poem also known as the Halliwell Manuscript.
It is the oldest known surviving Masonic document. Scholars
have determined that it was written at some time between 1390
and 1425 AD. It is a 794 line poem written in ornate calligraphy
over 64 vellum pages. It was given the name “Regius” for it was
once the property of the Royal Library in England. (Regius, adj.
belonging to the king.) It was transcribed by James Halliwell
in 1840 who was the first in the speculative era to recognize it
as a Masonic document hence the name Halliwell Manuscript.
Interestingly, he was not a Mason himself. The author of the
poem is unknown but is suspected to have been a priest who
transcribed it from an earlier copy.
The poem begins by tracing Masonry from Euclid in
Egypt to medieval England. It follows with 15 Articles for the
Master Mason, 15 points for the Apprentice, and concludes
with instructions on good manners. Personally, I would not
recommend that you read it for no other reason than I do
not wish to be fact checked. However, if you fancy yourself a
Shakespearean scholar, have plenty of free time, and have
trouble sleeping at night, then by all means, Google it and enjoy.
The 15 Articles for the Master Mason contain directives
for the operative Mason (the Master Mason must make sure
that the foundation of the building is well laid) as well as for
the speculative Mason (the Master Mason must care about
his fellows’ souls). The speculative portion must have been
troubling for our friend Butch as he grappled with the purpose
for it. We can imagine a conversation that he must have had
with the Worshipful Master.
Butch: Worshipful Master, I implore you for further light.
WM: What seems to be troubling you, Butch?
Butch: I have learned from sacred scripture that not
only does a Mason have to have good masonry skills but also
impeccable integrity and manners, too. If a Mason can erect a
solid structure suitable for its intended purpose, what difference
does his character make?
WM: Butch, I envision that there will come a day when
technology will advance to such a degree to render our craft
obsolete. Structures will be made out of materials we cannot
even fathom and erected in methods that we today would deem
unbelievable. The labors of our future brethren will be lighter
than our own. Without skill, character will be all they have left.
Butch: But Worshipful, without honest, hard work, future
generations will become soft, lazy, ignorant, and succumb to drink.
WM: Sighing. I fear you may be right.
Butch: What will the name be given to such vile, despicable,
slothful, effeminate men who are rude, crude, and socially
unacceptable?
WM: Why “Highlanders”, of course.
Suddenly, it seemed so clear to Butch. The warmth of the
wisdom of the master flushed his face as he gave the due guard
from the rear of alter and retired.
So let that be a lesson to each and every noble: that one
must internalize the teachings of our ancient Constitutions and
Charges for if not, he may just end up wearing a skirt.
Some members may not be aware of the presence of
local shrine clubs in Koraland. Shrine clubs for years
have been a way to further extend the fellowship of our
fraternity. Clubs are localized to certain communities,
making it more convenient for our nobles and their
ladies to gather and socialize on a more frequent basis.
Membership is open to any noble; you are welcome to
join any shrine club you wish regardless of your home
location. Shrine clubs generally meet in the Fall, Winter
and Spring, moving functions outside for the summer
months. Membership is extended to brand new nobles
KORA SANDS SPRING 2017
July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month.
The following is a reflection from a Shriners Hospitals for
Children — Boston parent whose daughter was born with cleft
lip and palate.
BOSTON HOSPITAL HAPPENINGS
Kara’s Story
By Ethel Dow, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston parent
I was 34 weeks pregnant when doctors told me there was a
possibility my baby would be born with both cleft lip and palate.
This news came as huge shock. The condition does not run on
either side of the family and my older daughter was not born
with either cleft lip or palate. A few weeks later, beautiful Kara
was born and the doctors’ concerns were confirmed.
Kara’s father and I found Shriners Hospitals for Children —
Boston through an acquaintance in our town whose children
had seen Dr. Lewis. I made an appointment, had a consultation
and left our first visit feeling completely comfortable placing
my daughter’s care in his hands.
This was just the beginning of Kara’s journey. We have been
going to the Boston Shriners Hospital since Kara was six weeks
old. Today she is a happy, healthy nine-year-old. We have a
great love for all the staff, all the nurses in the clinic and on the
recovery floor, and Susie the medical photographer. The nurses
who have cared for Kara take care of her like she is their own
daughter. As a mom, I cannot thank them enough.
Kara’s journey at Shriners Hospital has also brought new
friends. She became best of friends with one of her “roommates,”
keeping in touch often.
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston is a special place,
not just because of the great care Kara has received, but because
of the tremendous support we have all received.
Girl comes to Boston for treatment of burn injuries – gains so much more!
Esterlina’s story
By Hilary Smith-Chong, DPT, PCS, staff physical therapist, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston
Esterlina arrived in Boston this past fall from the
Dominican Republic, for treatment of a severe burn injuries,
but was able to receive so much more. Esterlina was 6 years
old when she was injured and started her treatment here.
She had full thickness burns to her abdomen and both legs
from her dress catching fire. It was reported that she had
developmental delays and that she was not able to speak. She
was scared and not able to communicate her wants and needs
to the staff. Over time, her team was able to build a rapport
with her and found ways to communicate through gestures
and pointing. She only had three words in her vocabulary,
but had a persistent spirit and positive energy.
Esterlina needed to be in the hospital for several months
as she underwent skin grafting and serial casting to treat her
burn injuries and contractures (a condition of shortening and
hardening of muscles, tendons or other tissue, often leading to
deformity and rigidity of joints.) As the relationship between
Esterlina, her mother and the Shriners Hospital staff grew, her
team discovered that Esterlina had perforated eardrums. Her
team began to suspect that Esterlina’s communication issues
were the result of hearing loss caused by ear infections she had
as an infant. Once Esterlina’s burn injuries were stable, the
team worked to have her seen by the experts at Massachusetts
Eye and Ear.
At Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Esterlina was seen by an
otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) who diagnosed
her with moderate hearing loss in both ears and recommended
that she receive hearing aids. She was able to receive hearing
aids through the Curing Kids Fund. According to their website,
the Curing Kids Fund uses donations to “fund research and
treatment for children with conditions that affect vision and
hearing and other debilitating disorders of the eyes, ears, nose,
throat, head and neck.”
Esterlina’s hearing aids opened up the world of sound
to her. She was able to receive speech and language therapy
at Massachusetts General Hospital while she also received
rehabilitation services at Shriners Hospital for her burn
injuries. One day while waiting for her during one of her final
appointments with the doctor at Shriners Hospitals for Children
— Boston, there was a small string quartet playing for patients
in the waiting room. This was the first time Esterlina had heard
live music with her new hearing aids. Esterlina was ecstatic and
had a smile from ear to ear. One of the players allowed her to
play his cello. The crowd surrounding her all had tears in their
SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL HAPPENINGS
Springfield Shriners Hospital Initiates New Sports Health and Medicine Program
Shriners Hospitals for
Children® — Springfield
recently launched a monthly
Sports Health and Medicine
clinic focusing on training,
injury prevention and the care
of children and adolescents
with sports injuries. As the only
pediatric orthopaedic experts
in western Massachusetts, the
medical staff is excited about
expanding services to the
Dr. Martinez- Silvestrini
area’s athletic population.
Dr. Julio Martinez- Silvestrini, who is heading up the program
is board certified in sports medicine and has more than 14 years
of experience treating sports and musculoskeletal injuries at
Baystate Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
As a former athlete, Dr. Martinez- Silvestrini understands
the urgency and passion of sports participants. As a trained
physician, he also maintains perspective on the need for
recovery and complete healing of the injured patient. Sports
injuries are unique in that athletes desire to return to the court
or field quickly and safely.
Dr. Martinez-Silvestrini has extensive experience with
nonsurgical care of injuries related to the performing arts,
exercise and athletics. He received his medical degree from the
University of Puerto Rico, and completed his physical medicine
and rehabilitation residency through Puerto Rico University
Hospital. In addition, he completed a sports medicine
fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is
also a diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Martinez-Silvestrini holds the Sports Health and Medicine
Clinic on the first Friday of every month at the Springfield
Shriners Hospital. The patients have access to ancillary services
such as physical and occupational therapy, bracing (including
custom-built orthotics), a state-of-the-art motion analysis center
and, if necessary, early referral for surgical evaluation.
KORA SANDS SPRING 2017
Meet Luis
I grew up with a
particular challenge that
is present in 1 out of every
400 births; I was born with
Pectus Excavatum (PE).
As I grew up I noticed my
chest was very different
than my friends’, which
at first made me selfconscious
and shy about
showing my chest in
public.
After a growth spurt I
kept noticing that I could
not tolerate exercise like all
of my friends did. One day
in gym class, I was playing
basketball and suddenly
started feeling dizzy and
winded, and I fainted.
It wasn’t until my junior year in high school that I discovered
I had PE. In health class, one of my friends brought to my
teacher’s attention that my chest was sunken. He was a doctor
and explained what PE was and that it could be corrected. He also
told me that he volunteered at a hospital in the United States who
came to the Dominican Republic every year to evaluate kids with
orthopaedic problems like me. He was referring to the amazing
Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield, Massachusetts.
When I arrived at Shriners Hospital, I received nothing but
exceptional loving care from everyone. From the volunteer
drivers and the person in charge of the front desk to the
amazing hospital nurses and doctors, all treated me with the
upmost respect, love and care anyone could ever wish for.
After my surgery in 2011, I stayed in the hospital for 6 days.
My amazing, loving and caring nurses, Chris, Cindy, Carol and
Rene, made sure that I felt as comfortable as possible at all times.
When I returned to the hospital three years later for
my second surgery, the care was as exceptional as I had
remembered. Everyone remembered me as if I was there the
day before. I truly have the most wonderful memories from this
entire experience.
I graduated in the fall of 2016, and I am a civil engineer. I also
teach English as a second language at a school in the Dominican
Republic. Thanks to the amazing work of the Springfield
Shriners Hospital team, I am able to live a healthy life, exercise
regularly, and even go out for a 5km run from time to time.
I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to Sandra Morales,
Luz Garcia, my amazing surgeon Dr. Stanley Konefal, Jessie
Hagerman, and all of the amazing nurses who took care of me
like family. That is what you become once you go to Shriners
Hospital, family.
Meet Taylor: Nothing will ever slow her down
In June 2008, we were expecting our second child, when I
went in for a routine ultrasound. I knew in my heart I was having
another girl and couldn’t wait to get home to tell my husband.
The next few hours changed our lives forever. I learned that
ultrasounds are for more than just confirming due dates and
the baby’s gender. It was that day I understood where the old
saying “10 fingers and 10 toes” came from. The ultrasound
revealed that a blood clot stopped our baby girl’s arm from
forming. She was going to be born with one hand.
As I mourned the loss of 5 tiny fingers, I feared what other
people’s perceptions of her would be and the struggles she
would face. I wondered if we would be able to ride ATV’s as a
family. I wondered if she would be able to tie her own shoes.
In the following weeks I lived online. I found and spoke with
a prosthetics company close to home. For a brief moment, my
silly worries were put to rest when I saw their President (a lefty
just like our baby girl) riding his motorcycle. I proceeded to
call our insurance company, found out they would not cover
prosthetics and wondered what we were going to do to get the
services our daughter needed.
Thanks to word of mouth, almost 200 miles away from me,
a member of the Kora Shriners told my mother about Shriners
Hospitals for Children.
When we made our first trip to the Springfield Shriners
Hospital, nothing could have prepared me for the moment we
stepped inside. The staff eagerly awaits your arrival and they
make sure that your child’s visit is more like a day at the park.
Taylor received her first “Armie” when she was 4 months
old and it was love at first sight. We look forward to her upper
extremity clinic visits. They give Taylor a chance to be around
other kids like her and all of them are perfect just as she is.
Taylor is currently 8 years old. She participates in a wide
variety of sports: soccer, cheerleading, gymnastics and her
favorite sport baseball! She loves art, and has won a handful
of awards for her pieces. She also enjoys snowboarding and
snowshoeing, driving her snowmobile and ATV, swimming,
snorkeling, fishing, water tubing, riding her bike and hiking. If
it’s outdoors, chances are she does it and loves it. She never lets
anything hold her back.
As time progressed, all the fears I once had for her were
completely replaced with joy.
Worth the trip
By Sarah Durgin, M.H.S., PA-C
How far would you
travel to obtain the best
care for your child?
Since December 2010,
Jason and his parents
have traveled more than
13,500 miles over the
course of 61 trips from
their home in the capital
region of New York to
Shriners Hospitals for
Children —Springfield
all to receive care for
Jason’s club feet.
Finding a New
Approach – Clubfoot is
a congenital condition,
present at birth, in which
the foot is twisted out of
shape or position. Jason
– currently 7 years old – was born with bilateral club feet that
were initially treated by a local orthopaedist. By the time Jason
was 5 months old, however, the physician realized he had no
further options to care for this complex condition – Jason
needed specialized pediatric care. At his parents’ request, Jason
was referred to the Springfield Shriners Hospital.
When first seen there, Jason’s feet were very irritated from
prior casting. The expert staff at the Springfield Shriners
Hospital recommended a period out of casts to allow the skin
and feet to recover.
After the break, David Drvaric, M.D., and Physician
Assistant Sarah Durgin, M.H.S., P.A.-C., began casting again,
using the Ponseti method. In this nonsurgical approach,
gentle manipulation is used to stretch contracted ligaments,
repositioning the foot in stages through a series of casts that
are changed weekly. This method gradually straightens the foot
into the correct position.
Jason’s left foot responded well, without the need for a
tenotomy, or surgery to lengthen the heel cord. The procedure
was necessary for the right foot, however, to allow Jason’s foot
to be flat on the ground when he walked. Jason’s feet were
also placed in special shoes
connected by a bar; these were
worn every night to maintain
the corrected position of the
feet.
Further Treatment
Three years later, Jason’s
feet had a recurrence and two
additional episodes of casting
were required to stretch out his
heel cords. Jason was also given
custom braces to wear. These
were made on-site in the Pediatric
Orthotic and Prosthetic Service
department at the Springfield
Shriners Hospital.
In the past several years,
Jason has received additional
treatment at the hospital.
Most recently, in April 2016,
Jason had surgery on his right
foot to adjust the muscles and
tendons. He is now doing
quite well, but his care team
will continue to monitor Jason
as he grows to make sure his
feet are aligned and pain-free.
When asked whether all the
travel was worth it to receive
this care for Jason, his mother
answered, “Every mile.”
To All Nobles who are interested in starting an atv/utv/side by side unit within Kora Shrine.
I am looking to see how many people will be willing to be part of
a unit which will use atv/utv/side by side cars for the benefit of Kora
Shrine.
Term car means any atv/utv/side by side or any vehicle used in
the unit.
These cars will be used in parades and demonstrations to help raise money for our temple and
our children at our children’s hospitals.
People need to own their own car and or have one donated to them or to the temple to use.
Once there is deemed that there is enough people interested in forming a unit we will reply via email, text or phone
(email is preferred, but not necessary) to setup a meeting.
Once the unit gets formed we will then work on the by-laws of the unit.
Please respond with your name, email and phone number so that we may contact you if there is enough people interested
in creating a unit.
Please add Kora ATV to the subject line so I know what it’s all about.
Ceremonial. I hope to see you as part of the white water rafting
trip on Friday June 9th, I am certain this will be a fun filled
day. As you know by now, we will be based at the Showhegan
Fair Gounds and I am encouraging all Kora members, even if
you are not spending the weekend, to come to Showhegan for
Saturday the 10th. Be on the sideline to show your support
for the newest members of Kora and the Unit members as they
parade on the streets.
On July 15 th we be in Saco for the Annual Lobster Bowl
Football Game at Thorton Academy Field. We plan to do what
we have in the past with Unit members going on the field.
As always, the Football Committee can use help and I would
encourage anyone who can to call or e-mail Asst. Raban Brian
Robbin and let him know where you can help. This will be
the second year that there will be a Walk for Love to support
Shriners Hospital. This is a one mile walk beginning and ending
at Waterhouse Field.
In August we have two big events the Northeast ShrineFall
Field Dayin Ottawa, Canada. Hope you have planned to join
us on the memorable trip. As many of you may have heard,
in Ottawa some Kora members will be initiated into the
Shriner International Hillybillies. There will be much more
coming in the next edition of the Kora Sands or through Kora
Connections. If you are interested in this group please contact
me or Outer Guard Chris Desoto to discuss the next steps in
the formation of this club and hopefully at some point become
a Unit of Kora Shrine. Another club that has started is the Kora
Brewmasters Cub. I want to thank Captain of the Guard Steve
Peterson for his work in getting this club up & running and
receiving their charter.
The second be event will be on August on the 26th we
will return to Turner to the annual Kora Kare Ride- In and
Barbeque Competition. I want to give a shout out to Noble
John Hutchins who is working on the creation of a ATV Club
within Kora Shrine. I suspect that many ATV riders within Kora
will be participating in the event. I know that John has some
plans for other rides and to participte in parades. John is a
member of the Aides Corp stop by and talk with him about his
ideas.
BUCCANEERS
Brandan Roberts, President and Scribe
Wow! As I write this, the 64 th annual Shrine Circus has
already started in Lewiston. What a great way to start the spring
off as the last of the snow melts away and the warmer weather
sets in. For a while there it almost looked as if we’d be trudging
around in a foot of snow wearing our buccaneer outfits! The
Circus is kick-starting the year for the Buccaneers as we gear up
for the events and parades that will make up our summer. Now
is the perfect time to join our crew so you can be involved in
all the fun. We’re a family-orientated unit that enjoys meeting
and greeting the children attending the Circus as well as
various parades across Maine dressed up as friendly pirates. If
interested, contact any of the Buccaneers and we will be glad to
send you information and an application! We hope to see you
soon!
FLAG UNIT
by Bruce Fifield, Director/Scribe
Dear Nobles and Ladies,
We trust you have all had a wonderful winter and early
spring! As flowers bloom and trees turn green, Crazy Cops are
gearing up for another busy parade season with bundles of
anticipation. We are in the process of building two new carts,
courtesy of Able Power Rooter of Lewiston and Triple A Foam
of Greene. Another sponsor for a third new cart is also in the
works. Additionally, Crazy Cops are getting excited for the
upcoming Summer Ceremonial events in Skowhegan and the
NSA Fall Field Days events in Ottawa. We would like to welcome
our newest member, Jon Lizotte Jr., to our unit. Have a safe,
joyful summer season!
Congratulations to Illustrious John H. Gailey, our newly
elected Potenate and his lovely First Lady Phyllis. We look
forward to a great year and are here to support you and your
missions and stand ready to assist in any way we can.
As always, we are looking for new members who would
like to join our proud Flag Unit. Our roster is down to eleven
members, of which only upward to eight of us are able to march
at any given parade.
Our Treasurer Larry Grady has given notice that he can
no longer continue in this position because of health issues.
We are in hopes that a current member will be willing to step
forward and take over this role. This will be addressed at our
yearly meeting on Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Union Masonic
Hall at 7PM.
We will continue to do the good work we do as Shriners.
FUNSTERS
by Adam ‘Simba’ Tanguay, Director
Well it’s the start of our busy season for the funsters, starting
with the circus. So far the shows appear to be going well. We
have had a good turn out by our members and I am hoping that
it continues for the rest of the performances.
We also have been receiving parade requests and getting
ready to perform for the those communities. We will be having
a work day soon to get our train clean and ready as well.
We hope to see our shrine families on the side of our parade
and can’t wait to participate.
GREETERS
By Craig Rubner, Scribe
The Greeters recently gathered together at DaVincis’, for
a late winter dinner get together. We had a great turnout and
it was fun to see our Nobles and their Ladies circulating and
catching up with everyone. Of special note, it was good to see
Dwinal and Aaron there. Pop and Norma Gilbert were there
too. We all got to sing Happy Birthday to Pop. Congratulations
and best wishes for many more!
On March 16 th Crawford Perry, Tom Ray and Fred Bockus
visited with Lady Ellie Gove, widow of a former Greeter. She
was very moved when they presented her with a certificate for
the 100 Million Dollar Club in memory of her late husband
Roy Gove. The club was established with the goal of raising
100 Million Dollars for the Shriners Hospitals endowment fund
through gifts or bequests of $100 or more.
By the time this comes out in the next Sands the Circus
will have come and gone and Spring will be in full bloom.
Hopefully all of us were able to get out and support the shows.
The Summer Ceremonial in Skowhegan, East/West Football
Game and Kora Kare for Kids Ride-in are all coming up soon.
The Greeters need everyone’s help to do our part and make
these events successful. If you know a Brother or Noble who
would be a good fit for the Greeters encourage them to come
and meet with us or help out at one of our events.
I recently spoke with Crawford and during our discussion
he mentioned that at the East/West Football Game another
group will be taking over the 50/50 raffle. This will help us to
better fulfill our duties at the gates, and also give my legs a break
from hiking up and down the stands with the kids. It’s been fun
working with the DeMolay boys and Rainbow Girls. Seeing such
a great bunch of kids supporting the Shrine Hospitals and at
the same time getting out and showcasing their organizations
has been very rewarding.
Having fun helping Kids is one of our mottoes. So,
don’t forget that there are several Greeter events coming up.
In addition to the Shrine events listed in Sands, members of
the Unit are looking into a day at the Maine State Museum
and then going to the Red Barn. An email about the Cabbage
Island Lobster feed trip was recently sent out and sounds like a
lot of fun. See you at Kora!
KARTS
by Dan Guilmette, Scribe
Greetings Fellow Nobles and Kora Kart fans! Its spring time
and we are getting the itch... The itch to get those karts out and
make kids smile. By now the circus will have passed and The
Kart unit will be getting things ready for the parade season. We
hope you all had a chance to help make this year’s Kora Shrine
Circus a success, we all enjoyed pitching in where we could.
In February, Noble Matt Ouellette and myself took a road
trip and headed to Georgia to pick up a new trailer for our unit.
I wish I had a great story to tell with many trials and tribulations
that happened along the way, but it was a pretty uneventful trip.
24 hrs straight down, a night’s sleep, picking up the trailer, and
24 hrs straight back. The only thing I will add here is that if you
ever find yourself travelling through Jessup Georgia, plug your
nose, you’ll thank me later…
KORA SANDS SPRING 2017
A few karts are being worked on now, getting some
much needed maintenance and updates. Nobles
Jaison Hall and Bernie Fortin have worked to give our
kart shields a fresh new look and boy don’t they shine!
On April 29 th , the unit will be having a spring get-together at
Amici’s Cucina, an Italian restaurant in Waterville. This was
a great opportunity for us to get together, socialize and just
have fun before the busy summer sets in. Summer ceremonial
should be coming right up and is an exciting time as it marks
the start of our parade season. If there are any new nobles
that are looking to join a fun and exciting unit, just search for
the yellow shirts. We are pretty visible at any Shrine event or
parade. Of course you can always get in touch with our unit
director Chris Bartsch (861-2772) or our Secretary Jaison Hall
(446-3576).
LEGION OF HONOR
by Bob Maxfield, Scribe
On April 2, 2017 the Legion of Honor was at the Portland
Jetport to welcome home another Honor Flight. There were
five Legionnaires standing tall next to the Coast Guard and the
Marines. Definitely have to say we looked sharp! There were
about 30 Veterans on board the plane. It was a mixed group this
time. There were WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Veterans. They
were all happy to see us when they arrived. What impressed
everyone the most was the gentleman who was wearing a hat
that said: WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was there to help
greet everyone who came off the plane. Talk about a hero. He
just blew us away.
MOTOR CORPS
by Kevin T. Cole, Scribe
We’re all getting our cars out for the parade season. Let’s
all remember that, even though vehicles with antique plates
don’t require a Maine annual safety inspection, they should be
checked thoroughly by a qualified mechanic before heading
for our first parade. We are here to help kids, not to put them
at risk.
If you haven’t already done so, please provide a copy of
your driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance card to
Secretary Lee Wright. If you have acquired a vehicle that has
not yet been inspected by the unit, please arrange for this to
happen before driving it to a parade.
As of this writing, our meeting at 12:30 on April 30 at Bray’s
Brew Pub in Naples hasn’t yet happened. If you receive this issue
prior to that date, please plan to attend. The next meeting, at
which spouses are invited, will be held on Memorial Day at the
Clambake in Pine Point between the two parades.
The first parade will be in Brunswick/Topsham. Please be
sure to arrive early, as the Topsham police likely will close off
access to the lineup area at 8:00 A. M. The second one will be
in Old Orchard Beach. Target lineup time is noon. If we arrive
at the Clambake promptly at eleven when its doors open, we’ll
have time to eat and make it to the lineup on time.
This year looks like it will be a good one for the Motor
Corps. We plan on having a strong presence at many parades
and hope to participate in the Northeast Shrine Association
Field Days in Ottowa in August. Members, we need to make
our reservations for NESA now and discuss whether we want to
convoy to Ottowa.
As always, Nobles, if you have an antique, a convertible or
a specialty vehicle and you’re interested in joining the Motor
Corps, please let us know. We’d love to have you!
See you on the highway!
RENEGADES
by Tim Beals, Scribe
Spring has sprung and parade season is here! The Renegades
are looking forward to our 41st year of delighting crowds all
over Maine. We have anywhere from 12-15 parades to prepare
for, so it’ll be a busy spring and summer.
We’re always looking for new recruits to squeeze into
the Jeeps, and to enjoy fellowship and hospitality after the
parades. If you want to join an active, family-friendly unit, give
us a try!
KORA SANDS SPRING 2017
SECOND SECTION
by Jim Hennemann, Scribe
Spring has sprung and the snow banks have retreated for
another year. I only wish the fish bit as well as the black flies. As
things green up, people seem to cheer up. Mud season should
be done by the time this goes to print and it will be safe to walk
in your door yard without wearing waders. Speaking of waders,
I got The Wife a pair of them at the store with the frilly clothes
that are usually made up of see through fabric. Not sure how
warm they are to fish with since there is no fabric between the
thighs but they sure look good on her! Thank goodness that
fuzzy night gown can go back in the closet.
Back to business now. The Circus turnout from the 2nd
Section was great. You guys kicked butt. Thank you, it was a
nice problem to have when there were more guys than jobs.
Hopefully we made some money, the show was a good one. I
think I need to drop a few pounds. The guy with the elephants
kept trying to put the saddle on me between shows. I thought
about taking a ride, but the elephant would have none of it as
she gave me that look I usually only get from the Mrs……you
know the one she gave me a minute ago when she read the
previous paragraph.
Summer Ceremonial and Northeast Field Days are coming
fast….Sign up now.
It is also never too early to think about the Auction on
Oct 21st. We have lots of goodies already lined up for sale
including a Doll and Figurine Collection of over 50 pieces that
was donated. It has Cabbage Patch Dolls, Disney, Hummel,
Danbury Mint and lots more. Talk it up, and bring friends
before Mike Bolduc buys the whole lot.
Be alert for Brothers in need…..some are too proud
to ask for help. Take time to smell the roses and enjoy the
Summer. God speed, I will try to do better next time…….
The Feztival of Trees Committee continues to work and
meet monthly as we prepare for another sucessful year. The
committee wants to welcome Lady Becky Knox who has taken
over as Coordinator of Fish Pond prizes/area. We also want
to welcome Noble Tom Campbell who will be working on
coporate sponsorships. Another new member of the Committee
is Greeter Director Crawford Perry. If you are interested in
becoming a member of this committee please see Noble Bernie
McAllister or Noble Mark Dublois.
The committee also continues to work with the City of
Lewiston to help evaluate the parking problems. A request for
the use of the Oak Street Parking Garage has been submitted.
The use of that garage and through the help of a vehicle from
the Mini Racers and drivers from Cycle Corps we were able to
transported 100s of people to and from the parking garage
during last years Feztival. As we move closer to the Feztival, we
will give you information on parking that will help us reduce
the congestion around the Shrine during the Feztival.
The Raffle Room will be again be under the leadership of
Tom Budek and his Lady Trudi. They are working to make this
year another success. If you have time this summer to work on
a homemade item for the Raffle Room, please contact Noble
Tom Budek at 754-2276. This summer would be a great time to
work on one of
those items that make our raffle room a place to win a
specialty crafted item.
The committee has receive calls from around the United
States over the last couple of months. Our latest have been from
Philadelphia and Milwaukee. Both Shrine Temples are excited
about the possiblities that there Temple may be able to create
a FEZTIVAL.
This committee continues working to enhance the success
each year, with yours continued support we know that we can
by Rick Hersom, Vice-President
The twenty-eight annul
Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl
Classic is now in full swing.
The annual team meeting was
held April 2 nd at KORA Temple
with eighty-eight players and
forty –two cheerleaders. All
ready to help raise money in
support of Shriners Hospital
for Children .These players,
cheerleaders and their
respected coaches take a
week out of their summer to help us support our local shrine
hospitals.
We were honored with two outstanding Shriners Hospitals
for Children patients who told of their history of care and
encouraged the participants to help their cause. First there was
Mahlon Schneck, from Yarmounth who is a double amputee
and a patient at our Springfield Hospital and second was Leigh
Dittman, a well-known patient from Tampa Fla who at the
age of sixteen has raised over one million dollars for Shriners
Hospitals.
Special thanks to the Androscoggin Shrine Club, The
Second Section and all the Nobles who helped with this year’s
team meeting. Nobles please help us support KORA’s largest
hospital fund raiser by purchasing your tickets weather you
are able to use them or not. Tickets that are purchased and
returned are given to local youth groups to attend the game.
