Is social media preventing us from
taking truly relaxing vacations? It
seems that more and more,
people pick their vacation in terms
of what they can post to social
media. But at what price?
Facebook is the main social platform for
posting vacation pictures. 52%
surveyed stated their friend’s photos
inspired their own travel plans. 76%
surveyed admitted to posting their
vacation photos to social networks. [1]

"I have friends that pick
their vacation locations
based on the potential
quality of the pictures
they will be able to
post while on vacation."
38% of children under 2
years old have used mobile
devices and the very same
[2]
children are over-exposed on
social media by their parents
and even have a digital
footprint before they are born
[5]
In fact, this is age of
the selfies and
social over-exposure
“Writers across disciplines observe that
people create more digital photographs
out of a perceived need to share them”[3]
It is no wonder society
would rather post the
daisies, than stop to
smell them.
Vacations are chosen for their
photo opportunities, rather
than a destination that will
ease the stresses that often ail
us [4]
Taking a good book or two
on vacation is often an
after-thought, but leaving
the house without a
mobile is unthinkable... [7]
…we opt for vacations
that will make friends
jealous or envious [6]
How many likes can we
obtain for being on
vacation, while those
back home are working?
As it seems all our leisure time is
spent on posing, and of what we can
post to make others feel envious.
“We’re born, we live for a brief
instant, and we die. It’s been
happening for a long time.
Technology is not changing it
much – if at all.” —Steve Jobs
Studies indicate some mobile
device owners check their
devices every 6.5 minutes [8]
Some social media
users will post about
their pets up to 6
times a week [9]
Rather than truly taking in
what nature has to offer
And taking the window of
opportunity to smelling those
daisies
How much of the simple
pleasures in life are people losing
out on as they primarily focus on
creating life experiences simply
to advocate them online?
Do put your phone away for a few hours and enjoy your vacation. Forget about
social media, forget about do’s and don’ts of posting pictures on social media.
Buy a fruity drink, stick your toes in the sand, and don’t take a picture of it.
- Christopher Muther, Boston Globe [10]
Vacations should be taken to get
away from the hustle of everyday
life and photographed with the
memory of our minds, not for the
possibility of, ephemeral, likes
Tempt yourself…
