WRT 110 Academic Writing I [3]<br />
Introduces students to the complex practices of writing, reading,<br />
and thinking required in many university courses. Students learn<br />
to approach writing as a process of invention, crafting, revising, and<br />
editing. The course also emphasizes the rhetorical aspects of writing,<br />
such as audience, arrangement, and academic conventions. Students<br />
learn to read diverse texts critically by practicing close-reading<br />
strategies, such as highlighting, annotating, and double-entry note<br />
taking. Students should become more confident and competent at<br />
understanding the positions of others as well as asserting their own<br />
informed perspectives. Designated sections of the course require<br />
additional work on basic skills. This course may not be elected on a<br />
Pass/No Pass basis. Laboratory fee.<br />

TH 112 Chromatic Harmony [2]<br />
The second course in tonal harmony, covering the principles of<br />
chromatic harmony. Topics include chromatic voice leading, chord<br />
progression, melody harmonization, and figured bass. Study of<br />
examples from the classic and popular music literatures. Three hours<br />
weekly. Prerequisite: TH 111 or placement exam.<br />
TH 120 Elementary Ear Training I [2]<br />
The first course in ear training. Development of sight-singing,<br />
dictation, conducting, and improvisation skills using diatonic<br />
materials. Kodály method. Three hours weekly.<br />
TH 121 Elementary Ear Training II [2]<br />
The second course in musicianship skills using Kodály materials.<br />
Practice in pentatonic and diatonic systems, introduction of<br />
triadic practice in singing and recognition of harmonic functions.<br />
Further emphasis on vocal intonation and part singing, including<br />
chromaticism. Melodic and harmonic dictation using all of the<br />
foregoing elements. Three hours weekly. Prerequisite: TH 120 or<br />
placement exam.<br />
