Opening a World of Study for Everyone
Thank you for picking up the latest edition of Engage.
This edition repeats the extremely successful “Buy One
Get One Half Price” commentary offer from last May-July.
With sixteen series featured you are sure to find what
you are looking for.
Regular readers of Engage will notice immediately a few
changes to the layout this time. Last year we carried out
some consumer research through our Engage retail
stockists to investigate ideas for the development of
Engage. The overwhelming response has been that
Engage should focus on opening up a world of study
for all interested people within the Church, starting with
beginners right through to those wanting to study at a
deep level.
The new layout reflects these intentions, moving from
the “Study Starters” section for those studying on their
own or in small groups, through to suitable new titles for
those studying on correspondence courses or full or part
time courses at College or University and on to “Deeper
Study” aimed primarily at Church leaders.
Study also needs to be relevant to the 21st century. The
question of how we apply biblical teaching to modern
issues and concerns is of major importance if we are to
be equipped to discuss and contribute to these issues.
Our new “Current Issues” section will aim to pick up on
the key topics of discussion both in the Christian media
and the general media.
We do hope this new layout will be of value to you. If
you have comments about these changes or how we can
further improve Engage please e-mail your comments to
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Bible
Thumbing a lift Through the Old & New Testaments
Colin Sinclair
Colin writes: ‘My aim is to help students, young Christians and church
members see how the Bible holds together. I want to take them on a journey
through the Bible showing how each part contributes distinctly to the whole.
I want to excite them and encourage them to explore it themselves and
provide them with the necessary tools.
‘Many people have a high view of the Bible but rarely read it or know where
to start. I suggest some new angles that might give them a desire to visit
even the most unpromising parts. By giving background, insights and an
overall view to each book and section I hope people will say “Oh I see now”
and then go on and read for themselves.’
Colin Sinclair is the Church of Scotland Minister at Palmerstone Place in
Edinburgh. He is Chair of Scripture Union International.
Cafe Theology
Exploring Love, the Universe and Everything
Michael Lloyd
‘If theology doesn’t stretch our minds, it probably won’t stretch our lives.’
In Cafe Theology, Mike Lloyd invites us to grab a cappuccino and travel with
him from Creation to New Creation. He presents a rich and human view of
life and of the Life-Giver using the deep diversity of Christian traditions,
poetry, comedy, paintings, novels, cartoons, philosophy and films. Whether
you‘ve been on the Christian journey your whole life, just starting out or
haven’t even bought a ticket, this extraordinary book is applicable.
The title Cafe Theology was chosen for two reasons. First, it implies that the
book is accessible. The word ‘theology’ makes people think ‘dry, dusty,
academic, irrelevant, and incomprehensible’, whereas the word ‘cafe’ makes
people think ‘warm, relaxed, fun – like having a chat with a friend’. Secondly,
it implies the sort of theology that values the ordinary pleasures of life. People
often think that being a Christian involves focussing on religious things, like
Bible study, prayer, worship etc to the exclusion of the things they really enjoy
doing. Mike believes that this is radically wrong and he presents a view of life
that opens up more dimensions for us to live in – not fewer.
So if you are looking for a fun way into theology this book could be the one
you’ve been looking for!
Using the example of the Lord’s Prayer, Peter Lewis shows how an
intimate relationship with God is a reality that can be experienced today.
Down the centuries and around the world The Lord’s Prayer has been
used to express the deepest longings of all true Christians. However, this
prayer that Jesus taught his followers reveals something far greater, the
character and purposes of God himself.
In this sensitive and often moving book, Peter Lewis shows how an
intimate relationship with God is a reality that can be experienced today.
RRP £9.99 / PB / 9781842276013 / 288 Pages / Paternoster
The cover of this book features a modern ‘cityscape’ at
night with its cluster of skyscrapers. And prayer too is a
kind of skyscraper. It quite literally reaches beyond the skies –
and gets there! It rises above the landscape while still being
firmly grounded in it. It helps us to see the scene from a
different perspective and enables us to respond to the needs
around us with more perception and wisdom and effectiveness
than we would otherwise have. Prayer in today’s world is an
engaged relevance, not an engaging irrelevance. This is a book
about a great prayer and the truths which are the firm
foundation of all prayer. It is not about prayer in general (nor
is reading it praying!). Yet it may be an elevator in the building
of a prayer-life which will help the reader to gain new heights
as he or she prays to our Father in heaven.
Missional church
Contemporary monastic movements
The Dawkins Delusion?
Atheist Fundamentalism and the Denial of the Divine
Alister McGrath – £7.99 / PB / 9780281059270 / 96 Pages
World-renowned scientist Richard
Dawkins writes in The God
Delusion: ‘If this book works as I
intend, religious readers who
open it will be atheists when they
put it down.’ The volume has
received wide coverage, fuelled
much passionate debate and
caused not a little confusion.
Alister McGrath is ideally placed to
evaluate Dawkins’ ideas. Once an
atheist himself, he gained a doctorate in
molecular biophysics before going on to
become a leading Christian theologian.
He wonders how two people, who have
reflected at length on substantially the
same world, could possibly have come
to such different conclusions about God.
McGrath subjects Dawkins’ critique of
faith to rigorous scrutiny.
His exhilarating, meticulously argued
response deals with questions such as:
Is faith intellectual nonsense?
Are science and religion locked in a
battle to the death?
Can the roots of Christianity be
explained away scientifically?
Is Christianity simply a force for evil?
This book is a must for those looking for
a reliable assessment of The God
Delusion and the many questions it raises
– including, above all, the relevance of
faith and the quest for meaning.
Micah’s Challenge
The Church’s Responsibility to
the Global Poor
Foreword by The Prime Minister the Rt Hon Gordon
Brown MP. Endorsed by David Cameron MP Leader
of the Conservative Party and Nick Clegg MP Leader
of the Liberal Democrats
Hoek & Thacker
Micah’s Challenge is a global Christian campaign. Its aims
are to deepen engagement with impoverished and
marginalised communities and to challenge international
leaders, and leaders of rich and poor countries, to
achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and so halve
absolute global poverty by 2015!
The name of the organisation is taken from Micah 6:8
‘He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what
does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love
mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’ This is Micah’s
challenge to Israel in his day and to the Church in our
day. God called the people of Israel to act with justice,
mercy and humility in their dealings with the poor. A call
that is just as relevant for his people today.
This book pulls together prophetic voices from Jim Wallis
to Tony Campolo and from Ronald Sider to Ren Padilla
and Joel Edwards to explore the theological, ethical and
practical dimensions of Micah’s challenge.
The heart of the book is an exploration of ‘acting justly’,
‘walking humbly’, and ‘loving mercy’. That call is set
within a broader biblical and theological framework and
followed by reflections on how we might live it out
today. Micah’s Challenge offers a passionate, biblical, and
challenging call to think afresh and to act redemptively as
individuals and as Christian communities.
After McDonaldization
John Drane
The decline in church attendance continues across Europe, yet increasing numbers
of people are turning to ‘spirituality’. These changes are occurring as part of the
continuing impact of globalisation and consumerism on society along with a
developing culture of fear and a new search for truth following 9/11 and world
reaction to this event.
In this sequel to the best selling The McDonaldization of the Church. John Drane
considers what must come next for the Church. He presents the case for a more
‘practical theology’, a reinvigorated style of ministry and the restatement of classic
Christian beliefs for the 21st Century; not just as ‘things to believe’ but as ‘values’
to live by.
The Day is Yours
Slow Spirituality in a Fast Moving World
Ian Stackhouse
The Day is Yours is a protest against the culture of speed both in the
culture at large, but also, more ominously, in the church itself. Rooted
in the monastic liturgy of the hours, Ian Stackhouse argues that in
order for Christians to act as a truly prophetic witness, in a time of
cultural decadence, they must recover a more biblical rhythm in which
work, rest, relationships, worship and prayer are held together in
creative tension.
The central thrust of The Day is Yours is that living one day at a time
with gratitude and contentedness is vital, lest the church capitulates to
the distractedness of modern life.
RRP £9.99 / PB / 9781842276006 / 176 Pages / Paternoster
It is very trendy in these days to name a child after the
place where he or she was conceived. And since creating a
book is about as close as a man is going to get to being
pregnant, then I guess I ought to call this book ‘Paris’; for it
was there, in the course of the evening and morning offices at
the church of St Gervais, that the idea of a book exploring the
spirituality of the day was conceived. …St Gervais became for
me a parable of the kind of rhythm and contemplation that I
believe the Holy Spirit wants to establish in our own
communities. Since that time….the rhythm of evening and
morning, has never left me. It is the ground of what I
understand to be the worshipping life of the church and, as
such, brackets what I offer here as a spirituality of the day.
The Crescent Through
the Eyes of the Cross
Nabeel Jabbour
“A war is raging for the minds and souls of Muslims today,” writes Nabeel
Jabbour. “The eternal welfare of 1.4 billion people is at stake. They are being
pulled in two directions—fanaticism on the one hand and moderation and openmindedness
on the other. How we deal with this window of opportunity will
determine our relations with Muslims for generations to come.” At the same
time, the Christian church must realize Jesus died for Muslims. In this book, Dr.
Jabbour aims to help Western Christians go beyond mere tolerance to a passion
for Muslims. He explains how that can be done in ways that are sensitive to
Islamic culture, and he presents suggestions on how to build vital relationships
with Muslims.
Commentary Series
Tyndale / HB
Each commentary in this projected 18 volume series, is prefaced by a
substantial book introduction that gives general historical background.
The reader is then taken through the Bible text, passage by passage,
starting with the NLT (New Living Translation) text printed in full. This is
followed by the ‘Notes’ section which helps the reader understand the
Hebrew or Greek behind the NLT translation and interacts with other
scholars on important interpretive issues and points to significant textual
and contextual matters. The ‘Notes’ are followed by the ‘Commentary’
which presents a lucid interpretation of the passage, giving special
attention to context and major theological themes. Like the NLT text
itself, the commentaries are extremely readable.
This series, primarily designed for the
benefit of readers using the NLT and
written by well-known North American
scholars, will in fact be found helpful by
preachers and Bible students looking
for middle-length commentaries that
are concerned to elucidate the text and
expound it in such a way as to facilitate
understanding its contemporary
message for the church.
Jesus Through Middle
Eastern Eyes
Cultural Studies in the Gospels
Kenneth E. Bailey
Beginning with Jesus’ birth, Ken Bailey presents a Middle
Eastern cultural commentary on the life and ministry of
Jesus as found in the four Gospels focusing particular
attention on the Lord’s Prayer, the Beatitudes, Jesus’
relationship to women and his parables.
Throughout the author employs his trademark expertise
as a master of Middle Eastern culture to lead us into a
deeper understanding of the person and significance of
Jesus, lifting away the obscuring layers of modern
Western interpretation to reveal Jesus in the light of his
actual historical and cultural setting.
Key features:
Offers insights into the Gospels from a Middle
Eastern perspective
Counteracts modern and western impositions
upon the Bible
Highlights the key events and teachings in the
earthly ministry of Jesus
Features a wealth of cultural information related
My intent is to contribute new
perspectives from the Eastern
tradition that have rarely, if ever,
been considered outside the Arabicspeaking
Christian world. It is my
fond hope that these essays may help
the reader to better understand the
mind of Christ, and the mind of the
Gospel author /editors as they
recorded and interpreted the
traditions available to them.
Kenneth E. Bailey, author and
lecturer in Middle Eastern studies.
Kenneth Bailey has done a fantastic
job in enabling us to put on the
spectacles of a Middle Eastern
believer and to therefore gain new
insights into what was always
there in Scripture but not quite so
clear when only viewed through
our lenses.
Ancient Near Eastern Themes
in Biblical Theology
Jeffrey J. Niehaus
Jeffrey Niehaus traces the many parallels between the Old Testament (and
Bible as a whole) and the ancient Near East, including creation and flood
narratives, common literary and legal forms, supposed acts of deities and the
God of the Bible, and more. Instead of merely studying a random selection of
parallels, however, he proposes that they represent “a shared theological
structure of ideas in the ancient Near East, a structure that finds its most
complete and true form in the Old and New Testaments.” This
comprehensive and enlightening resource promises to help readers to
intellectually grasp and appreciate the overarching story of the Bible within its
cultural development.
RRP £9.99 / PB / 9780825433603 / 192 Pages / Kregel
The Bible was not written in a vacuum. Jeffrey
Niehaus skillfully situates biblical theology in the
context of the ancient Near East. He not only helps
us understand the often perplexing relationship
between the Bible and similar stories from the
ancient Near East, he enriches our reading of the
biblical text itself. I wholeheartedly recommend
this book.
Christianity’s Dangerous Idea
The Protestant Revolution, a History from the
Sixteenth Century to the Twenty First
Alister McGrath
Protestantism is one of the world’s largest and most dynamic religious
movements, currently experiencing major growth and expansion in the
southern hemisphere. This book sets out to explore the inner identify of this
movement, and its implications for the religious future of humanity. The
‘dangerous idea’ lying at the heart of Protestantism is that every individual
has the right and responsibility to interpret the Bible. With no overarching
authority to rein in ‘wayward’ thought, opposing sides on controversial issues
appeal to the same text, yet interpret it in very different ways. The spread of
this principle has led to five hundred years of remarkable innovation and
adaptability – but also to cultural incoherence and instability.
Christianity’s Dangerous Idea is the first book that attempts to define this
core element of Protestantism, and the religious and cultural dynamic that
this ‘dangerous idea’ has unleashed. Its three major sections explore the
history of the movement, engage with the distinctive features of Protestant
belief and practice, and offer a provocative assessment of Protestantism’s
global future.
NIV Application
Commentary Series
From biblical text…
to contemporary life.
Zondervan / HB
Most commentaries help us to make the journey
from our world back to the world of the Bible.
They enable us to cross the barriers of time,
culture, language and geography that separate
us from the biblical world. Once they have
explained the original meaning such
commentaries often either give us little or no
help in exploring its contemporary significance
or offer some sketchy, moralistic sounding
application that reads more like a sermon.
The primary goal of the NIV Application
Commentary series is to help you with the
important but often difficult task of bringing an
ancient message into the modern context. The
series does not simply focus on application as a
finished product but helps you think through
the process of moving from the original
meaning of a passage to its contemporary
significance helping you to develop a biblical
world view. This very readable series is suitable
for pastors, students, church group leaders and
those looking for a detailed verse by verse guide
to each biblical book. Based on the New
International version.
Reading Paul
Michael J. Gorman
Reading Paul explores the central themes of the apostle’s gospel. Gorman places special
emphasis on the theo-political character of Paul’s gospel and on its themes of cross and
resurrection, multiculturalism in the church, peacemaking and non violence as the way
of Christ.
Gorman also offers a distinctive interpretation of justification by faith as participation in
Christ. Unlike many introductions to Paul, this one makes a contribution to the ongoing
discussion of the significance of the apostle, both as an historical figure and as a
contemporary voice. Suitable for lay readers, beginning students, and those unsure
about what to make of the apostle!
SCM Theological Commentary
Series on the Bible
SCM / HB
The SCM Theological Commentary Series is designed to serve readers by
demonstrating the continuing intellectual and practical viability of
theological interpretation of the Bible. Figures of the classical church such
as Augustine, Calvin, Luther, and Wesley interpreted the Bible
theologically, believing Scripture as a whole witnessed to the gospel of
Jesus Christ. Modern interpreters of the Bible questioned this premise. But
in recent decades, a critical mass of theologians and biblical scholars has
begun to reassert the priority of a theological reading of Scripture. This
series enlists leading theologians to read and interpret Scripture for the
twenty-first century, just as the church fathers, the Reformers, and other
orthodox Christians did for their times and places.
This book.. is a guide to reading Paul. As such it is not a traditional ‘introduction,’ though it touches on
many subjects covered in such works….after this preliminary chapter, there are three chapters on Paul,
his letters, and his gospel. The book is then organised around eight themes (In the Fullness of Time; The
Gospel of God; Even Death on the Cross; God Raised and Highly Exalted Him; Justified by Faith; Crucified
with Christ; Called to be Saints; Conformed to the Image of God’s Son and the Glory About to be Revealed)
that lie behind his letters, Understanding these essential themes will allow the reader to hear them as they
echo throughout the letters and, I trust, to be caught up in them as the living and active word of God.
Michael Gorman
This splendid introduction to the Apostle Paul is the best book of its kind; concise, wise, insightful,
thoroughly conversant with the best recent scholarship, yet thoroughly clear and readable.
Leading by Example
Peter’s Way for the Church Today
Graham Houston
Leading by Example explores the practical theology of 1
Peter with particular reference to Christian leadership.
Graham Houston critiques the trend in recent books to
relate contemporary management theories to church
leadership. He explores 1 Peter’s expose of the problem
of authoritarianism (‘lording it‘) in the early church, and
its development of an alternative model of servant
leadership.
Houston blends insights from current New Testament
scholarship, sociology, theology, psychology and from
years of Christian ministry to allow the ancient biblical
text to address our current situations afresh.
He challenges us to look away from apparent western
success stories for examples to follow, and rather to look
to the apparent fringes of God’s work in today’s twothirds
world.
Leading by Example is essential reading for any who want
to see how the biblical text can help Christian leaders
serve the purposes of God in a more Christ-like and
radical way.
EP Study Commentary Series
Evangelical Press / HB
A series aiming to bridge the gap between technical commentaries
and simpler devotional commentaries. Written from a reformed
theological perspective, the writers engage with the more academic,
technical material and present it in a non technical way. Suitable for
pastors and students and those who have studied at a deeper level.
Each commentary is usually based on the authors own translation of
the Bible and contains a detailed introduction to background
information and the themes explored in the biblical book. The text is
expounded section by section.
Word Biblical Commentary 18A
Job 21-37
David J.A. Clines
The book of Job has been hailed as a literary masterpiece. Yet it poses
one of the most difficult literary problems in the Old Testament: how to
understand the order of speeches and speakers from chapters 26 through
to 37?
Professor Clines addresses the problem directly with a sweeping proposal.
He argues that chapter 26 continues Bildad’s speech from the previous
chapter. Job’s ninth speech is shorter than usually recognised, only 27:1-6,
11-12. Clines finds Zophar’s missing third speech in 27:7-10, 13-17;
24:18-24; and 27:18-23, thus completing the last cycle of speeches by
the three friends.
Finally, he solves the mystery of the wisdom poem in chapter 28 by
crediting it to Elihu and showing that it should follow Elihu’s other four
speeches (chaps.32-37) as their climax. This new reconstruction allows
Job’s final speeches (29:1-31:40) to end the cycle and lead into God’s
response (chaps 38-41). The commentary is presented in this new order
to help the reader follow this new structure for the book.
Clines guides readers through the intricacies of Job’s language and the
book’s theology. He concisely summarises the views of other
commentators, but also notes the choices that readers must make in
order to evaluate Job’s honesty and judge the character of one of the
most vivid personalities in biblical literature.
Word Biblical
Commentary Series
Paternoster / HB
The Word Biblical Commentaries are written by scholars
from around the world who are engaged in teaching in
university, college or seminary. They come from a rich
diversity of denominational allegiance. All are committed
to Scripture as divine revelation and to the truth and
power of the Christian gospel. Each author uses their
own translation of the original language of the text as
the basis for their comments and exegesis. The
commentaries are set out in 3 main blocks: Notes which
lays out the textual witness on which the translation is
offered; Form and Structure/Bibliography presents the
position of modern scholarship on the text;
Comment/Explanations presents the exposition and the
texts relevance. Suitable for pastors, scholars, students
and anyone interested in a deeper study of the text.
Faith’s Reasons for Believing
An Apologetic Antidote to Mindless Christianity
Robert Reymond
Using extensive Biblical references, Reymond takes us on a comprehensive tour of
why it is possible for belief to exist as a result of knowledge in the Christian faith.
He gives us both reasons for believing in key aspects of the Christian faith and a
defence of the presuppositional apologetic method. Writing from a Reformed
position, Raymond urges Christians to think as Christians, to learn how to do this
and to not think in any other way.
“Militant atheistic writers are making an all-out assault on the Christian faith
today – they speak of ours as a ‘mindless Christianity’ – and as a result many
people today, including scientists and many poorly taught Christians, would think
it very strange to talk about faith’s reasons for believing, for if there is one thing
not understood today about biblical faith it is that it eschews any and all antiintellectual,
fidelistic ‘leaps of faith’ and is grounded in the knowledge of
propositional truths about Jesus Christ.”
For Zion’s Sake
Christian Zionism and the Role of John Nelson Darby
Paul Richard Wilkinson
This groundbreaking book debunks decades of misrepresentation of Christian
Zionism and questionable theology, exploding the myth that J.N. Darby stole
the doctrine of the pre-tribulation Rapture from his contemporaries.
By revealing the truth behind the man and his message, Paul Wilkinson
vindicates Darby and spotlights the imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ
as the centre piece of his theology.
God, Gays and the Church
Nolland, Sugden & Finch
Compassionate and robust, the essays in this volume provide a
response to the claim that the life experiences of gay people
undermine the credibility of biblical sexual ethics.
In contemporary discussions about sexuality, great prominence is given
to personal stories from gay people. This emphasis can also be seen in
recent Christian debates. But it is a one-sided testimony, and this book
is intended to redress the balance and to advance the discussion. In
addition to personal stories from a different perspective, this book
contains accessible informed contributions from experts in the fields
of psychology, psychotherapy, genetics, biblical and pastoral theology,
social ethics and cultural analysis. Chapters include:
Pastoral Considerations for Homosexuality
Post-Gay: The Transforming Power of God
Post-Lesbian: My Testimony
Same Sex Attraction. Is it innate and immutable?
A Faithful Church: The Bible and Same-Sex Sex
Civil Partnerships: Advice to UK Parishes and Clergy
Unexpected Consequences: The Sexualisation of Youth
Expert contributions include chapters by Professor Joseph Nicolosi,
former President of the National Association for Research and Therapy
of Homosexuality, and Professor Robert A. J. Gagnon, author of The
Bible and Homosexual Practice. This compilation provides a resource
for those concerned more broadly with issues of human sexuality and
for those who struggle with same-sex issues, whether from a pastoral
or a personal point of view.
Cornerstone Biblical
Commentaries
The Cornerstone commentary on Matthew and Mark
provides a good introduction to the study of the gospels.
The commentary is clearly set out, making it easy to find the
required information and it reads well. The commentators
discuss the key issues in a way that makes them accessible
to the non-specialist.
Karen Fulton, Belfast Bible College
The Jeremiah and Lamentations commentary represents a
valuable resource for those who want a succinct exegetical
assistant for the preparation of sermons – I heartedly
recommend it for this purpose.
Dr Ted Herbert, Vice Principal, ICC Glasgow
