Summer’s finally here, and there’s no better time
than now to take a look at all of the great things
happening at the library!
Starting June 3, our annual Summer Reading
Program begins, and we have a calendar jam-packed
with events and activities to keep you busy all season
long. Get ready to enjoy some of your favorite
summer library activities, as well as some events and
features that are brand new for 2017.
Once again, MIX 105.1 FM kicks will hold summer
celebrations at all of our library branches. They’ll bring
on-air hosts, as well games, prizes and special guests
from Medieval Times – check out page 28 to see
when they’ll be visiting a branch near you! We’re also
bringing back some of our favorite SRP
performers, including Koo Koo Kanga Roo, a zany
dance-pop duo who were a huge hit when they
came to the Orlando Public Library for a live concert
last year. We’ll have them at three library branches
for high-energy shows this month. See page 30 for
locations, dates and times.
For the younger kids, we’ll have appearances
from some of our most popular performers,
including Zoo Mom Science, Mr. Tim the Comedy Magician,
Gigi and Friends and more. Mr. Steve, host of
PBS Kids morning program breaks, returns to the Orlando
Public Library for two appearances in July. See
page 34 for details and our interview with Mr. Steve.
We’ve also got some new and exciting fun in store.
On June 24, we transform the Orlando Public Library
into scenes from your favorite Harry Potter books in
honor of Potterversary, the 20 th anniversary
celebration of the publication of the first Harry Potter
novel. Take a stroll through Diagon Alley, visit the
offices of The Daily Prophet, pretend to go for a ride in
Mr. Weasley’s flying car and sample our secret recipe
for butterbeer. It’ll be a day you won’t soon forget. See
page 31 to find out when the magical fun takes place.
For library lovers of all ages, we’ve also introduced
a new feature on our website to help you keep track
of your summer reading activities. Children and
adults can sign up for Beanstack, a fun and interactive
system that lets you track the books you’ve read, earn
virtual badges for programs you attend and receive
recommendations for new reads based on your
interests. Find out how to sign up for Beanstack on
page 35.
There’s so much going on this summer, and we’ve
only just begun – Summer Reading Program runs
through August 5. Visit ocls.info/srp to learn more
about our programs for kids, tweens, teens and adults.
