Photo © Amalia Infante/Volvo Ocean Race Design № 757 Volvo Ocean 65 Over the past year Farr Yacht Design has been working closely with the Volvo Ocean Race Boatyard on the refit of the 7 Volvo Ocean 65’s. The VO65’s were pushed hard in the previous race and each boat has received a complete and thorough refit estimated at € 1 million per boat. More than just cosmetic work, each of the boats has had a complete ultrasound survey the results of which are correlated with surveys taken during each boats’ build and throughout the race. Any laminate damage or issues are reviewed by our lead structural engineer, Chris Cochran, and repair strategies developed with the boatyard that insure the boats are one design compliant and as robust and reliable as when they were launched. While the refit process advances to its completion, the eighth VO65 for Team AzkoNobel had its primary structure completed at Persico Marine before being transferred to the Boatyard in Lisbon, Portugal to undergo systems fit-out and finishing using the same process as the refit boats. The next edition of the Volvo Ocean Race starts October 22, 2017 and FYD will be supporting teams with performance analysis and on site at the stopovers to advise on any necessary repairs.
