President’s Message
Lance Bleakley
Activities for the Greater Seattle Chapter slowed down during the summer.
Col Mastin, AFROTC Commander, retired in June and moved to Colorado.
His replacement Col Brent Bigger arrived in the beginning of August and has
begun to settle into the job. The results of the budget reduction has materially
impacted the total AFROTC program. Some Cadets who were on
scholarships were not able to attend annual field training
because of the budget constraints. Those impacted by
the cuts have been allowed to resign from the program
without having to repay the scholarships.
During the Chapter's September meeting the new
cadets went through their initial orientation including
agreement signing. The ceremony was attended by
many of the cadets' parents. There was a Bar-B-Q for
the cadets and their parents. AFA Chapter members
Brian Hamilton - VP Recruiting and Retention, Rob Coe
- Secretary and I attended the festivities and got a chance to speak with
some of the parents. I even found a family that moved from Hawaii beating
their move by a year!
Like most US Military programs the JROTC has a problem with budget funding. The
units are looking for support not so much in the form of money rather support in areas
such as excursions to bases, possible industry faculties – Boeing as an example and
Senior ROTC programs. Any thoughts or suggestions please contact Barry Jones or
Lance Bleakley.
Brian Hamilton has stepped up to expand the Chapter’s support to the ROTC units. He
has made presentations at awards ceremonies and met with various units as well as
parents.
President Bleakley is a member of the Federal Way JROTC Advisory Board. Federal
Way School District has made a concerted effort to support the JROTC program. The
magnitude of this is reflected in LtCol Randy Long’s move to Dean of Students at
Federal Way High School. Major J. J. Golemboski is the new senior instructor.
90th Anniversary Celebration Naval Air Station Sand Point
Reunion and 1st Flight Around the World
The Chapter and the Museum of Flight supported the 90 th Anniversary Celebration and
remembrance of the 1st Flight Around the World. . The celebration started on Saturday
at the Museum of Flight with presentations on the Round the World Flight. The activates
were supported by the Navy League, Museum of Flight and AFA.
In April 1924, four Douglas World Cruisers of the US Army’s Air Service departed Sand
Point. Three aircraft and their crews returned 175 days later on September 28th fulfilling
the challenge as the first flight around the world. They started out with four aircraft and
two finished. They flew 26,345 miles in 363 hours and 7 minutes, an average speed of
72.5 miles per hour. Sunday September 26 th was the continuation of the celebration at
the former Sand Point Naval Air Station. It included the presentation of the colors by the
University of Washington Joint Color Guard under the command of Anthony M.
Callaham, C/Col, AFROTC Honor Guard Squadron Commander 910th Cadet Wing.
Once again The activates were supported by the Navy League, Museum of Flight and
Civil Air Patrol Update
Lance Bleakley
Col Ted Tax - Vice Commander CAP Wing joined the September Board
meeting. We discussed expansion of AFA support to the Wing CAP units.
We’ve been requested to meet with Wing members to discuss the mutual
support. Additionally Alex Lepeske and I will be meeting Captain Percey
Newby, Commander of the South Sound Composite Squadron. To be
discussed is the AFA awards and presentations to the various unit CAP
Cadets of the Year.
Alex, Barry Jones and I will be working with the CAP units to expand
CyberPatriot support. Two major issues restricting CyberPatriot participation
is the lack of computers and Coaches. Like many other areas of Defense the
CAP program is feeling the impact of the Federal Budget. A similar situation
exists regarding uniforms. We are looking for volunteers to help support our
efforts.
As we identify differing requests we’ll try and tie them to the local AFA
Chapter. Please let the Chapter know if any members are near or affiliated
with any local CAP units or activates and would like to donate or more
importantly can donate some time.
Green River Composite CAP Squadron enrolled in the CyberPatriot 2014 competition. Program.
DeVry University has been providing assistance as well as Major Barry Jones. This
is our most recent CAP CyberPatriot team and we are looking for more. We are working
with Alex Lepeska and with his help plan, expand the CyberPatriot into additional units.
Our support from DeVry University continues to be outstanding. Coaching and advisor classes
continue. The number of teams has more than doubled from last year. Bob Bunge, Associate
Professor DeVry University, is on a one year sabbatical, however, DeVry University
is continuing to provide support.
October 10 th is the deadline for the upcoming competition. This is the fourth year AFA expects
to have all 50 US states represented. This year’s competition will include a fully integrated
middle school division. The goal is expand the program and reach younger students.
An Elementary School Cyber Education Initiative will launch later this year, students
will be introduced to cyber security, cyber ethics, online safety, and basic system hardening
through an exciting game like activity.
In the Spring Barry Jones became the focal point for CyberPatriot contact on this side of
the Cascades. As discussed at the 2 nd Quarter State AFA meeting, Barry will respond and
initiate contacts from the various school requests for assistance. We will then work with the
appropriate Chapter for support. We’ve had requests from schools, CAP, JROTC and even
individuals. We need your support so please let us know how you can help.
Missileer Reunion, 28 September, Seattle
Missileer Jim Chase
The AFA Chapter along with Boeing and the Museum of Flight supported the 2014
15th Minot Missileer Reunion in Seattle. Lance Bleakley was a member of the reunion
committee. AFA member BG Frank Goodell, USAF (Ret) was the guest speaker at
the banquet dinner. His background in acquisitions included the Minuteman program.
Rick Hartle, Boeing Director, Energy & Strategic Systems and AFA Utah member
were able to pull together Boeing retirees and current engineers to meet with the
Missileers. Everyone got together over lunch at the Museum of Flight where the Boeing team brought
their experience to the table. The discussion and several interviews with both Boeing personnel as well
as Missileers were videotaped by Boeing. We are working together to record the history.
Background - The missileers served during a very stressful time of the Cold War and maintained a
strong nuclear deterrent to prevent foreign attack, and was at the forefront in safeguarding national
security. Boeing, as the main contractor, began construction on Minuteman at Minot AFB in 1962, and
in 1963 the last missile was emplaced to begin alert duty.
Minuteman construction first began at Malmstrom AFB in 1961, and there were 10
missiles up and ready during the Cuban missile crises of October 1962. In November
1963, during Kennedy’s assignation, Minot AFB had its missiles up and ready.
Malmstrom AFB was designated as Wing 1 and Minot AFB as Wing 3 in the order of
construction among the five bases that would receive missiles. The missiles first
installed were Minuteman One missiles, and several of our missileers who attended
the Seattle reunion worked with Boeing in testing out systems prior to activation and
then performed alert duty after activation. Minot was never scheduled to receive the
Minuteman Two missiles, but did install the Minuteman Three beginning in 1970.
Minot missileers belonged to the 455th Strategic Missile Wing of the Strategic Air
Command and were attached to either of three Squadrons, the 740th, 741st, and
742nd. In 1968, the 455th became the 91st Missile Wing.
Missileer Royce Brownfield
The 2014 Seattle reunion of Minot Missileers was the 15th reunion, and most who attended served with
the Minuteman One missile in the 1960s, although some also served with the Minuteman Three. These
missileers served during a very stressful time of the Cold War and maintained a strong nuclear
deterrent to prevent foreign attack, and was at the forefront in safeguarding national security.
