The feminism movement has surfaced in
magazines, on social media and on the
runway, more so now than ever before.
The fashion industry has long been an avenue
of society that was taboo for feminists. How
can someone care about their reproductive
rights while simultaneously caring about their
looks? Weird. Vogue contributor Maya Singer
summed it up perfectly; “having a sense of
style was selling out the sisterhood”.
In the early 1990’s, the fashion industry was
one of many that reacted to the rise of third
wave feminism and joined their advocacy for
diversity. Designers soon began creating collections
that combined fashion with feminist
issues.
In 2015, Karl Lagerfeld created a Feminist protest
at his Chanel Spring/Summer show. Models
walked down the catwalk in force wearing
suits, shouting into megaphones and carrying
posters emblazoned with “He for She”, “Feminism
not Masochism”. This would be the start of
a long line of designers following suit.
