JUNE 2017
Editor’s Letter
I’m proud to introduce the freshly launched premier issue of BREED Magazine. My name is Melissa Rodwell and I am the Editor in
Chief. Let me begin by saying that I have been addicted to fashion imagery and magazines since I was a young girl. I began stealing
my mother’s issues of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar when I was 12 years old and would obsessively flip through the pages, cutting
out certain pages and creating my very own mock editorials. I would later go on to shoot thousands of international magazines
myself as a fashion photographer. I have worked with many fashion and beauty editors on assignments that were photographed
all over the world. There really is no greater pleasure than seeing one’s imagery in print. But in today’s digital world, I truly believe
that whether we see the images on a laptop or printed on beautiful stock, on an iPhone or on newsprint, it is one of our best moments
to see great work by other photographers and of course, to see our own, in a layout produced by a team of experts that
believe in your work as much as you do.
Producing a magazine is a lot of work and it takes a team of people who believe in the final product. A team who is dedicated to
producing a book of images and words that will inspire you and move you. My creative director, Richard Ray Ruiz, has a similar
background to mine in that he has years of experience in art. While his background is in graphic design, art, music, and the fashion
industry, I trust his eye. It is impeccable to detail, a trait I insist on when working with a team. Rachel Toledo is our new Beauty
Editor. Again, her years of experience in the beauty industry shine through in her monthly column, The Make Up Artist Industry
Pages and her input on the beauty editorials.
I am especially excited of the work that came in from cities all over the world: Prague, Seattle, Mexico City! The work came from
our very own Breed members but I was also happy to see that non-Breed members submitted great work which indicates to me
that the word has spread in a short time: BREED Magazine is here and we intend to stay for a long time!
We have much more to come, my hope is you stay with us and watch us grow. It’s an exciting time for Breed and BREED Magazine!
I thank you for being a part of our spirit!
Breed - The Makeup Artist Industry Pages - by Beauty Editor Rachel Toledo
It’s finally Summer and that’s a great time to get testing. Outdoor location shoots in a park or the beach can be a nice addition
when building your portfolio but, beware of the many pitfalls of shooting outdoors. In my experience new photographers
can be awesome at finding an interesting location but can forget about important logistics. For example, when I just
was starting out I was booked on a bikini test shoot. The photographer had a noontime call time in the middle of July. We
were set up on hotel rooftop to shoot at its pool. It was 90 degrees out and the pool was packed. He didn’t think of where
hair and makeup would be set up, so we were struggling for shade. My makeup kit became soup and hair couldn’t find a
working outlet to plug in his tools. The woman’s locker room was closed for repairs and the model didn’t have anywhere
to change bikinis. Needless to say the whole shoot was a hot mess! So here’s my helpful guide to reducing any unwanted
“uh-oh” moments for your glam squad and team.
If you’re doing an outdoor shoot on a budget you may not have the luxury of a location trailer but with a little planning and
preparation beforehand you can just concentrate on your shots and not your mishaps.
If it is the middle of the Summer, heat is mostly likely going to be a factor so think either early morning or later afternoon
start. You’ll also get better light.
If the middle of the day is your only option for the location, then come prepared. Check and see if there is a shady spot to
set up. Are there tables or chairs? If hair and makeup need to get your model ready maybe choose to meet at a nearby hotel
to set up or someone’s apartment first so they have an appropriate area and electrical outlets to get glam done. Then
they can do touch ups on the location. You can buy inexpensive folding director’s chairs from Pier 1 and Ikea that are great
to have on set too.
If it’s an especially hot and humid day be realistic when considering looks and mood boards. If you want big wavy beach hair
on a straight haired model, make sure you know of somewhere at the location that has electricity or bring along a generator
as your model will defo need touch ups. If you are at a windy beach maybe discuss planning a pony tale with your styling
team for the model. It’s disheartening for hair to spend an hour setting and blow drying hair for it to be destroyed within
seconds.
If you’re on location and you’re at some remote area on a hot day make sure to have water handy on set for the crew. Bring
a cooler! If you are doing a test on a budget and it’s a hot long day and you can’t provide drinks or lunch, tell your crew
beforehand so they can be prepared. There is nothing worse then working with a ”hangry” and dehydrated crew.
Bathrooms! Make sure you have scouted out where the nearest ones are before your shoot, even if it’s a local McDonalds
to pop into.
If you are taking your crew to a shoot by car or a van, check for the nearest places to park. See how far it is from the location
and plan accordingly where you are going to set up hair, makeup and styling. The less running around you have to do on a
hot shoot day the better. There are also pop -up tents you can bring with you to the location so your model doesn’t have
to keep running back and forth to the car. Pack a folding card table.
And remember to have fun! Testing in the heat can be stressful and often things may not go the way you planned but you
are all artists so just get creative and the magic will happen.
