IN MEMORY OF THE LATE AUNTY SARAS FROM THE CHILDREN OF HER ELDEST SISTER THE LATE MDM. BALAMPIKAI AMMAL IN MALAYSIA The late Aunty Saraswathy’s (Saras) parents, the late Mr Sinnathamby Karthigasoo and the late Madam Annaledchumy, d/o Somasunderam came to Malaysia in the early 1900 from Sri Lanka and resided in the town of Seremban in the State of Negeri Sembilan and later moved to Batu Gajah a town in the State of Perak. Aunty Saras father the late Mr. S Karthigasoo held a respectable position in the Malaysian Government Service and lived in a big government bungalow just opposite the Seremban Railway Station. The late Aunty Saras was born in Seremban on 30th November 1930 and lived in Malaysia with her parents and siblings until around the Mid of 1934, Thereafter the entire family relocated themselves to Sri lanka, leaving behind her eldest married sister the late Mdm. Balampikai Ammal in Malaysia. She was the eldest child of the late Mr. S. Karthigasoo. Mdm Balampikai Ammal married Mr. Velayuthan Vairamuttoo on 30th January 1931 in Malaysia. They were blessed with 10 children (5 daughters and 5 sons). In 1935 the Velayuthan family visited Sri Lanka and in 1962 Mdm Balampikai Ammal again visited Sri Lanka accompanied by her younger brother K. Jeganathan, his wife and his two eldest children who were returning back to Sri Lanka after their first short visit to Malaysia. She met up with all her family members and stayed with them for about 4 months. Aunty Saras eldest sister and Brother in Law passed away in Malaysia, 1976 and 1998 respectively. Aunty Saras eldest son Muralidaran was one of the main driving force to play a key role to create a link and a communication network between his mother and her other children with her eldest sister's children in Malaysia. Murali visited Malaysia on several occasions either by himself or sometimes with his wife and children. His first visit was in January 1988 and during this time he stayed with his late Uncle Velayuthan in Petaling Jaya. During all his visits, he made it a point to visit all his cousins and this has created the closer ties between both the families.
Usha Devi Velayuthan one of her eldest sister's daughter visited Aunty Saras and all her children who are residing in Sydney on three occasions ie in December 1999, December 2007 and very recently in December 2016 and below is her narration. I have never met my mother's sisters. The first opportunity I had was in December 1999 when me and my daughter went to Sydney and my cousin Murali picked us up from the airport and we proceeded to his house. His mother and sisters were all gathered in his house for lunch in memory of his late father's death anniversary. The moment I saw my Aunty Saras it brought a lot of emotions and feelings in me being able to meet up with her and she too felt joy and happiness in seeing me and my daughter. We talked about my demised mother, my sisters and brothers. She was also very keen to know how life was in Malaysia as she was born in Seremban. During our stay there Murali took us to the Zoo. Aunty Saras joined us even though she had difficulty in walking. She happily walked with us and we had a cheerful conversation and lots of laughter during the tour of the Zoo. Next we met again in December 2007 and this time with my husband. We spend a lot of time talking and we enjoyed the time spent with her. Aunty Saras to me was a person of passion, love, affection and kindness. My recent last meeting with Aunty Saras was on 3rd December 2016 together with my husband and my daughter. She was seated on her favorite chair and she was very happy to see us and she did most of the talking as usual asking about my siblings and other matters. It was an unforgettable and happy moments we spend with her and her children who were present there at that time, and before we knew it, it was time for us to say goodbye.
