Sack Trucks
Also called sack barrows, hand carts or hand trucks, these
are used to move heavy loads more easily. Various criteria
should be considered before purchase and use.
There are some safe trucks specically designed for
particular applications, such as drum trucks, chair carriers
and multi-position.
Load Capacity (measured in kg)
This is dependent primarily on the wheel type and then the
material and construction of the sack truck. Aluminium sack
trucks are lighter but generally have a lower load capacity
than steel.
Toe Plate
This is where the product to
be moved is placed, and is
sometimes referred to as a foot
plate, platform, shoe or ledge.
It can either be a xed toe
or a folding toe which allows
larger products to be moved
but reduces the storage space
required when not in use.

Suitable for most surfaces.
Pneumatic Tyred Wheels
Move easier over rough surfaces but can be harder to initiate
movement under heavy load.
Stairclimber (or star) Wheels
Useful for moving products up and down stairs due to their
conguration, but when used by 1 person on stairs it is
recommended that a maximum of 50kg is moved. Some
trucks have a wheel guard to prevent the load damaging
the wheel.

Handles
Sack trucks are available with 2 separate handles or a
single loop type. Separate handled trucks require 2 hands
to use and can come with knuckle guards to protect the
hands from the load. The loop handles can be used single
handedly, and are easier to pull over obstructions. A
variation of this is the P Handle, which allows the truck to
be loaded horizontally before being raised to the tilted or
upright position.

The load capacity (stated for the trolley as a whole,
not per shelf) is primarily dependent on the castors that
are tted. Braked castors allow the trolly and its load to be
locked in position. The deck material (platform trolleys) and
shelf material (trolleys) should be selected for their intended
use. Plastic trolleys are easy to clean and protect the goods
being moved but have a lower load capacity compared to
steel. Zinc plated and stainless steel trolleys are easy to
wipe down and are less prone to corrosion. Anti-slip decks
retain the load while it is being moved. Trolleys with trays
can contain minor liquid spills.
Effectively a trolley without a handle, they offer greater
visibility and manoeuvrability compared to a trolley.
Fitted with 4 swivel castors, some offer braked castors
allowing the dolly and its load to be locked in position.
