Choosing a Pallet
Used for distribution and storage, the choice of pallet depends on what is to be carried, the weight of the load and how
the pallet will be moved. Pallets can be used as storage containers by adding pallet collars or pallet cages to a base pallet.
Pallet boxes (a container on a pallet base) are also available. Many pallets are stackable and also available as nesting pallets,
requiring even less space when stacked.

Pallets can be manufactured from plastic, presswood
or metal, each having advantages over the more common
softwood timber pallets.
Plastic
Plastic pallets are inherently
safer than timber pallets,
since they do not splinter,
nor contain nails or screws
which may damage products
or injure handlers. Being
impervious to most chemicals
including fats and acids, they
are often used where hygiene
is critical and can also be
easily cleaned. They can be
made from recycled or virgin
plastic, resist rot and are
extremely durable, but cannot
be repaired.
Metal
Also known as stillages, they
are used for storage of items
in manufacturing industries,
with the added benet that
they can be stacked when
loaded.

Presswood
Made from ground wood
bres, mixed with synthetic
resins and compressed
under high pressure and
temperature they contain no
nails or screws to splinter
or harm the products being
transported.
These pallets conform to the
strictest ISPM15 standards,
essential when exporting to
many countries.
3. Pallet Construction
Pallets are either 2-way or 4-way, referring to the number
of directions accessible by a forklift truck, pallet truck
or stacker. The 2-way uses a frame of 3 parallel pieces
(stringers) supporting the deck. 4-way pallets use parallel
and perpendicular stringers, creating a stronger structure,
and entry from all sides provides better efciency when
moving them. Normally these pallets have a unidirectional
base, i.e. the bottom boards are orientated in one direction.
Perimeter base pallets have the bottom boards orientated in
both directions, and usually an advantage when the pallet is
used for racking purposes.
4. Load Capacity
The load capacity is usually given as a static and a dynamic
load, but is expected to be an evenly distributed load (UDL)
across the pallet.
