The Volvo Ocean Race is sailing’s greatest 

adventure and professional sport’s ultimate 

test of teamwork. 

Born in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the 

World Race, it remains a unique challenge 

– as teams compete against each other over 

45,000 nautical miles around the planet, in 

relentless pursuit of competitive edge. 

Starting in Alicante, Spain, and finishing in 

The Hague, The Netherlands, the race lasts 

nine months and takes in 11 landmark cities 

across five continents. 

The Volvo Ocean Race provides unique 

and memorable experiences, not only for 

the sailors onboard, but also for your guests, 

who can join us for a slice of the action.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the race, 

there is no saying what time of day or night 

the teams could arrive. Teams can arrive 

in the middle of the day, to the noise of 

thousands of race fans cheering them on, 

or in the early hours of the morning, creating 

a more intimate and magical experience 

for die-hard fans, loved ones and specially 

invited guests. 

Arrivals can take many different forms. 

Teams could arrive close together and 

take part in an exhilarating battle to cross 

the finish line. Alternatively, a team might 

arrive unaccompanied, having distanced 

themselves from the rest of the fleet. 

From a high-speed RIB your guests can 

experience the once-in-a-lifetime moment 

when the teams cross the finish line and 

arrive at a new Host City. 

Your guests will become part of the 

Volvo Ocean Race story, as we take 

them within touching distance of the 

team crossing the finish line, and give 

them access to the stars of the show. 

This is a real VVIP experience.

The Volvo Ocean Race Village Experience 

provides your guests with the opportunity 

to go behind the scenes. Hosted in one 

of our unique hospitality venues within the 

Race Village, your guests will hear from 

professional sailors, sample the freeze-dried 

food the sailors eat onboard, try on a survival 

suit, crawl through a Volvo Ocean 65 racing 

yacht in the Race Boat Experience, and 

experience life behind the scenes at the 

Boatyard.

The In-Port Race is a key part of the Race 

Village Experience. At the end of the race, 

there is a separate trophy for the overall 

In-Port Race Series winners, and positions 

in the series will be used to break any tie 

in the main Volvo Ocean Race table. 

The fast-paced action can be experienced 

on land, onboard a VIP spectator boat, or 

onboard a high-speed RIB. 

Our official VIP flag will ensure your 

guests on the water have unprecedented

circumnavigation sprint around 

Hong Kong island, the same course as 

the Hong Kong Round The Island Race

Leg Start Experience

The Volvo Ocean Race is the toughest 

sailing race in the world and the inherent 

dangers of ocean racing are something 

all sailors and their families are acutely 

aware of. The Leg Start is the time when 

our teams say goodbye to their loved 

ones and set sail for the next leg of the 

Volvo Ocean Race. 

There is an official dock out show, with 

local entertainment, a Sailors Parade, live 

interviews on the dock, and a blessing 

of the fleet. The teams complete a fastpaced 

lap, similar to the In-Port Race 

course, before setting off for the next Leg 

of the race.

Your guests can be part of this emotionally 

charged moment. From the Sailors Terrace, 

onboard a VIP spectator boat, or onboard a 

high-speed RIB, your guests can be part of

Our VIP flag will get your guests on water 

closer to the Volvo Ocean 65s than anyone 

else as they depart. Our professional 

commentators will explain the race and 

keep your guests updated on the action.

The sailors’ favourite place to have a 

cup of coffee when on shore, the Sailors 

Terrace is a Volvo Ocean Race managed 

facility within the Race Village and offers 

a location for networking and business 

meetings, as well as a comfortable and 

informal place to relax. 

In 2017-18, we have two floors, complete 

with high-quality sound and AV equipment. 

With a variety of furniture set-ups available, 

there are many possibilities for your 

meetings and events. 

During the 2014-15 edition of the race, 

the Sailors Terrace hosted brunches, 

meetings, presentations, lunches, drinks 

receptions, formal dinners and much more. 

Race day – Ground floor: 

Prices range from €250 for a reserved area, up to 

€1.000 for exclusive use of whole floor, for up to 4 hours. 

Non-race day – Ground floor: 

Prices range from €200 for a reserved area, up to €800 

for exclusive use of whole floor, for up to 4 hours.

Boatyard 

In addition to its main objective of providing 

service, maintenance and repair for the 

Volvo Ocean 65s, and allowing public 

inside to watch the on-going work, the 

Boatyard is also available as a unique venue 

for your meetings, conferences and events. 



During the previous edition of the race, the 

Boatyard breakfast hosted thousands of 

corporate guests, giving them a truly behind 

the scenes experience before they boarded 

spectator boats to watch an In-Port Race or 

Leg Start from the heart of the action. 

Additionally, VIP guided tours were carried 

out in every stopover, and the Boatyard also 

hosted several conferences, crew parties 

and informal BBQs for race stakeholders. 


Race day – Entire venue: 

€1.000 for exclusive use, for up to 4 hours. 

Non-race day – Entire venue: 

€750 for exclusive use, for up to 4 hours.

The Globe 

The polidomes geodesic cinema was 

originally designed to present the everyday 

‘routine’ of the yacht crews to enthusiasts 

on an amazing 360º video screen. 

Flexible seating, a professional sound and 

AV system, and a large cinema screen, 

makes for the perfect setting in which to 

hold your conferences, meetings 

and presentations.

Race Boat 

Experience 



The Race Boat Experience was the most 

popular animation asset in 2014-15, with 

more than half a million people visiting and 

crawling through the boat to experience 

the Volvo Ocean Race’s unique cramped 

conditions for themselves. 

A large tent-structure displaying a 

full-size Volvo Ocean 65 Race Boat 

Experience, complete with bunks, a 

navigation table, a toilet, and an On- 

Board Reporter work station, this is a 

special place to host a drinks reception 

or presentation, whilst giving your guests 

a better idea of what life is like onboard 

for the Volvo Ocean Race sailors.

Come Rain Or Shine 

The unpredictable nature of the weather, means that very occasionally, 

the In-Port Race or the Leg Start might be postponed. We will have 

access to up-to-date information about the racing should this be the 

case. Rest assured, we will have a back-up plan for your guests should 

the weather take a turn for the worse.
