SUMMER 2017 EDITION
As more and more of us
are using Facebook to
keep up to date with
local goings on or to see
pictures of friends and
family there are also
more of us falling foul
of spammers and
hackers out there. So
we've put together a list
of golden rules to help
you stay safe online
with Facebook.
1. Too good to be true?
We would all like to be
in with a chance of
winning something and
there are loads of
legitimate competitions
on Facebook, however,
if it sounds too good to
be true then it probably
is. The likelihood of
Apple giving away
1000s of shop soiled
iPads, or an unknown
company giving away a
brand new Landrover or
mobile home is pretty
much nonsense. All you
are doing by sharing,
commenting and liking
these posts is
continuing on what is
known as 'like farming'.
They are usually bogus
accounts set up just to
gather your information
so they can spam you
with further nonsense
posts in the future and
with any luck make you
start trusting them so
you give them more
information about
yourself that they can
use against you in the
future.
2. Don't copy & paste.
How many of these
posts have you seen
lately that have a heart
felt message declaring
that you are heartless if
you scroll past, or to
raise cancer awareness
you should copy and
paste the post. By not
using the 'share'
function on Facebook it
gives spammers the
ability to search for that
post and you will look
like one of the
originators of the post
and therefore again
they have your
information and know
that you are likely to
share stuff they want
you to in the future.
The best way of raising
awareness about cancer,
or animal abuse or
another charity based
appeal is to share posts
from recognisable
charities themselves
like Cancer Reasearch or
