As more and more of us<br />

are using Facebook to<br />

keep up to date with<br />

local goings on or to see<br />

pictures of friends and<br />

family there are also<br />

more of us falling foul<br />

of spammers and<br />

hackers out there. So<br />

we've put together a list<br />

of golden rules to help<br />

you stay safe online<br />

with Facebook.<br />

1. Too good to be true?<br />

We would all like to be<br />

in with a chance of<br />

winning something and<br />

there are loads of<br />

legitimate competitions<br />

on Facebook, however,<br />

if it sounds too good to<br />

be true then it probably<br />

is. The likelihood of<br />

Apple giving away<br />

1000s of shop soiled<br />

iPads, or an unknown<br />

company giving away a<br />

brand new Landrover or<br />

mobile home is pretty<br />

much nonsense. All you<br />

are doing by sharing,<br />

commenting and liking<br />

these posts is<br />

continuing on what is<br />

known as 'like farming'.<br />

They are usually bogus<br />

accounts set up just to<br />

gather your information<br />

so they can spam you<br />

with further nonsense<br />

posts in the future and<br />

with any luck make you<br />

start trusting them so<br />

you give them more<br />

information about<br />

yourself that they can<br />

use against you in the<br />

future.<br />

2. Don't copy & paste.<br />

How many of these<br />

posts have you seen<br />

lately that have a heart<br />

felt message declaring<br />

that you are heartless if<br />

you scroll past, or to<br />

raise cancer awareness<br />

you should copy and<br />

paste the post. By not<br />

using the 'share'<br />

function on Facebook it<br />

gives spammers the<br />

ability to search for that<br />

post and you will look<br />

like one of the<br />

originators of the post<br />

and therefore again<br />

they have your<br />

information and know<br />

that you are likely to<br />

share stuff they want<br />

you to in the future.<br />

The best way of raising<br />

awareness about cancer,<br />

or animal abuse or<br />

another charity based<br />

appeal is to share posts<br />

from recognisable<br />

charities themselves<br />

like Cancer Reasearch or<br />
