KIA ORA KELLY A.KA. CHANDRA
THE MAUI CREW AND I JUST WANT TO GIVE A HUGE SHOUT OUT
TO YOU FOR BEING A PART OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS FOR
THESE STORIES. YOU'VE BEEN AWESOME TO WORK WITH.
NGA MIHI BRO
AND TO OUR AWESOME AS TRANSLATORS, BERNADETTE AND HIRIWA
WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SKILLS, AND INSIGHTS AND HOW
YOU'VE EACH BROUGHT THE REO TO LIFE IN THESE CHAPTERS,
WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR CREATIVITY AND WISDOM.
NGA MIHI KOUTOU
- MAUI CREW
THE MOUNTAIN SITS PEACEFULLY.
KORO TARANAKI OVERLOOKS THE LAND THAT HE
PROTECTS AS CLOUDS SIT IN THE SKY.
TARANAKI IS SURROUNDED BY DENSE BUSH THAT COVERS PAPATŪĀNUKU WITH
A VEIL OF NATURAL ELEGANCE AND GENUINE BEAUTY.
THERE ARE MANY WHO SPEAK OF
TITOKOWARU'S LEGEND. HIS TALE IS TOLD FROM VILLAGE
TO VILLAGE RAISING THE MANA OF THE GREAT TIPUNA,
OUR KORO TARANAKI, THE MOUNTAIN THAT WATCHES THE
HORIZON.
THEY SAY TITOKOWARU SUMMONS
UENUKU'S MIGHTY WINDS WITH HIS WORDS.
THEY SAY HE CRUSHES THE HEARTS OF LIONS IN HIS HANDS. BOOMING THE
WORDS "MATA IKA" ACROSS THE BATTLEFIELD.
HE WALKS WITH AN ADVANCED GUARD KNOWN AS THE TEKAU - MA - RUA.
THESE MEN WERE CHOSEN BY THE GODS TO DO THEIR
BIDDING. THE GODS SPOKE THROUGH THE TONGUE OF
HIS MIGHTY TAIAHA TE POROHANGA, A TAIAHA LARGER
THAN ANY MAN.
EACH OF THE ADVANCED GUARD ARE SIX FOOT TALL, GIANTS
AMONG MEN, CUNNING AND FEARLESS.
THEY ARE KNOWN TO DEVOUR THE MANA OF ANY WHO
DARE CROSS THEIR PATH.
AND THEY MOVE AND FIGHT UNDER THE
PROTECTION OF ANCIENT POWERFUL
KARAKIA HANDED DOWN BY THE
RANGATIRA TURI HIMSELF.
BUT TITOKOWARU IS NOT WITHOUT HIS SHORTCOMINGS. AS HIS
BATTLE RAGES ON, THEY SAY, THE ONLY MAN WORTHY OF
DEFEATING HIM.... IS HIMSELF.
AND SO THAT IS THE STORY
OF WHY PEOPLE FROM
TARANAKI ARE SO HEARTY.
NAH BRO, THAT'S ME UNDER
EXAGGERATING, SOME SAY THEY WERE
TWENTY FOOT TALL HAHAHA EASILY SIX
METRES TALL BRO.
HAHAHA TEN FOOT TALL IS
PROBABLY TOO HUGE THOUGH G,
THAT'S THREE METRES TALL.
HAHAHA FAR THAT'S MEAN,
BRO GIANTS EXISTED.
TAUA ..... DO YOU SENSE THAT
PRESSURE?!
YOU SPEAK OF ONE OF THE GREAT
RANGATIRA OF TARANAKI, TAMARIKI
MĀ.
HE WAS A GREAT MAN OF PEACE, BUT
DRIVEN TO WAR BY THE INVADERS OF
HIS GREAT LAND.
HAHAHAHA I SCARED YOU
FULLAHS AYE.
YOU STARTLED US KOROUA. IS THERE
MORE YOU CAN ADD TO THIS STORY?
THERE ARE MANY WORDS I
CAN FEED TO YOUR STORY
YOUNG MAN.
FOR THE FOOD OF
CHIEFS, IS DIALOGUE.
LET ME TELL YOU THE CONFLICTS OF THE GREAT
RANGATIRA WHO WALKED THIS EARTH BEFORE US.
TITOKOWARU LEARNED THAT
UNDERSTANDING WAS THE KEY TO BEING
EFFECTIVE IN THIS WORLD.
SO HE PUT HIS MIND TO MASTERING LITERACY, HE
LEARNED OF RELIGION, OF WAR AND PHILOSOPHY, HE
PUSHED HIMSELF TO UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE AROUND
HIM AND BEYOND HIM..
FOR HE KNEW THAT KNOWLEDGE
WOULD SET HIM FREE.
NOT LONG AFTER, HE BEGAN TO SEE THE
TERRORS OF THE INVADERS.
HE WOULD THEN SEE HIS FAMILY NGĀTI
RUANUI, FIGHT ON THE FRONTLINES,
HE WOULD SEE THE DESPERATE DEFENCE OF
THEIR HOMES FROM THE ONSLAUGHT
AND HE TOO WOULD TAKE UP ARMS TO
DEFEND HIS PEOPLE.
HE TOO WOULD STAND BEFORE THE LION THAT IS THE
BRITISH INVASION.
I
Xx
TITOKOWARU WOULD HONE HIS ABILITIES
IN THESE BATTLES
AND BECAME A FORMIDABLE WARRIOR!
HE WOULD BECOME THE GREAT RANGATIRA,
TITOKOWARU!
THE TASKS OF
TITOKOWARU
Read the following graphic novel about Titokowaru and complete the following
tasks:
Reading time not factored into lesson time
(Teachers will need to scaffold activities based on the needs of the students. The
planning, drafting, seeking feedback and final copies of work is up to the individual
teacher)
1) Questions from the text: 1 lesson
a) In your own words what is the graphic novel about?
b) Who are the main characters?
c) What connection might the maunga Taranaki have to Titokowaru?
d) Explain at least three of Titokowaru’s skills/attributes
e) Give an example from the text which describes Titokowaru’s strength
f) Describe a tipuna from your own iwi that has similarities to Titokowaru and
explain why?
g) What skills/attributes do you think you have that are similar to Titokowaru?
h) “The food of chiefs, is dialogue”, explain what this metaphor means
i) What did Titokowaru value in order to ‘set him free’
j) Explain why in your own words this has the ability to set people free?
2) Wider research: 10 lessons research, oral presentation, visual presentation, portfolio,
formal writing
a)Titikowaru is recognised as being a prophet, peacemaker, warrior and engineer. Explain
why he is recognised as each of these roles, support your answers. Keep a record of
websites and resources you use. You choose how to present this information e.g. poster,
presentation, paragraphs, blog…
b) It is argued that Titokowaru is one of New Zealands greatest warriors. using the graphic
novel, and other resources write an essay that: Describe who Titikowaru was and explain
why he is a great Māori Leader.
3) Language features: 1-3 lessons text study
a) Identify 3 language features in the graphic novel that were used to make you feel either,
sorrow, or joy or pride.
b) Describe and explain how those language features in the graphic novel made you feel
either sorrow, joy or pride
c) Why do you think the author wants us to feel either sorry, joy or pride.
4) Interview (homework)
Interview a Grandparent, elderly family member/friend on:
- Who they think has similar skills/attributes to Titokowaru from your iwi and why? Have they
done anything in their life that demonstrated these attributes, if so, what?
- Ask them what similar skills/attributes they think you have that are like Titokowaru and why.
5) Research: Complete the two research tasks below: 10 lessons research, portfolio, formal writing,
text study, oral/visual presentation
a).Choose a prominent Māori leader from either the 20th or 21st century
Provide some:
- Basic biographical information such as: name, age, place of birth, Country
- What are they a prominent leader of?
- What characteristics do they have that makes them a prominent leader?
- What characteristics are similar to Titokowaru?
- Explain why
- Keep a reference list of websites, texts, articles you gather information from
) Who is a foreign/international prominent leader with similar characteristics of Titokowaru (for example,
Nelson Mandela)
Provide some:
- Basic biographical information such as: name, age, place of birth, Country
- What are they a prominent leader of?
- What characteristics do they have that makes them a prominent leader?
- What characteristics are like Titokowaru?
- Explain why
- Keep a reference list of websites, texts, articles you gather information from
c) From this research create a presentation (e.g. speech) for the class that includes a visual presentation
to explain how the characteristics/attributes/strengths Titikowaru demonstrated in the graphic novel are
important qualities that can be seen in leaders today (include both the Maori leader you researched and
the international leader). Finally explain how these qualities and attributes can be seen in people you
know around you (information from your interviews).
6) Write a tribute piece of writing that explores the attributes of Titokowaru. You will need to create
a plan, and draft your work. When you have completed a draft share this with another student
who can provide you with some feedback and next steps. 3-5 lessons portfolio, formal writing,
- The first paragraph should explain where Titokowaru came from and what he was known for.
- The second paragraph should explain why Titokorwaru was known as one of Maoridoms mo
prominent warriors, both on the battlefield and off it.
- The third paragraph should look at a similar figure through-out the world who had similar
characteristics of Titokowaru, and who was also a prominent leader for their own people
(Nelson Mandela for example could be likened to Titokowaru, explain how).
- Fourth paragraph is a conclusion
7) Create a media campaign, using the story you have just written about Titokowaru and then
design one of the following: 5 lessons visual presentation/creation
a) A poster
b) A website
c) A blog post
d) A newspaper or magazine lay-out
e) A music video
The campaign should aim to raise awareness of an aspect of history from the reading of the graphic
novel about Titokowaru, which has inspired you. It might include, but is not limited to; the importance of
leadership, standing up to bullies or the importance of re-telling our history.
