1998 Denver Broncos win their first Super Bowl
John Elway and the Denver Broncos win in a close
31-24 game making them the Super Bowl champs for the first
time in program history. They played the Green Bay Packers
and came in as underdogs but defied the odds and shocked the
world, it was recorded to be the 2nd biggest upset in Super
Bowl history. The AFC has been on a 13 year losing streak in
the Super Bowl and the Broncos just broke that streak being the
first AFC team to win since the Oakland Raiders in 1984.
All the players couldn’t be happier. “Oh man,” said
Broncos defensive end Alfred Williams, who now has won a national championship with the
University of Colorado and now a world championship with Denver. “Our city must be going
crazy. I was there when the Avalanche had their parade after they won the Stanley Cup. And all I
can say is, I can’t wait until we have our parade.” The state of Colorado couldn’t be happier and
neither can anyone apart of the Bronco organization. But no one can be happier than Terrell
Davis after putting up unreal numbers with rushing for 157 yards, 3 touchdowns, including the 1
yard game winner with 1:45 left in the game. With all that he won MVP of the Super Bowl and
couldn’t end the 1997-1998 season any better with the ultimate upset.
Rule one: Don’t ask, Don’t tell
Fight club is a movie that forces the viewer to think outside of the box in
order to truly understand what is actually happening. Director David Fincher took
idea of creating Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Fight Club into one of the best movies of
the generation. The movie is based around a nameless first person narrator
(Edward Norton) where he attempts to fix his emotional state of mind and cure his
insomnia. Edward is a young man who spends his days assessing car crashes to
determine whether his automobile company should issue recalls to fix problems.
Through his process of fixing his mental state, he meets with a woman named
Marla who attends these group sessions despite not being in need of help. However
his life truly is not affected until he meets a man by the name of Tyler Durden.
Two complete polar opposites that come together creating abstract ideas. Together
they create a men-only group for bare knuckle fighting. The once small group
becomes thousands across the country and becoming more than just a place to
fight. The group becomes an anti-capitalist domestic terrorist organization
underground. Edward becomes so involved in the group that he is unaware of of
Tyler and Marla’s relationship leaving him forced to be an outsider looking in.
Stress levels build up over that and the group going rogue, and ultimately decides
that there is only one way out.
The movie itself was a huge hit. From the amazing direction of David
Fincher, he produced one of the most thought provoking and abstract movies that I
have ever seen. I almost felt like I was with Edward in his journey. Despite the
subpar acting that was displayed in the movie, I felt like maybe joining a “fight
club” for myself would help benefit stress that I have in my life. The way how
Fincher was able to create the book into a movie with almost perfect accuracy is
astonishing. I met with him for lunch the other day to try to pick his brain about the
creation of the movie, but Fincher refused to tell me anything. For that one doesn’t
“talk about Fight Club”.
The Death of A Princess
On August 31 1997 Princess Diana of
Wales died as a result of a car accident the
day prior along with two of her body guards
Dodi Fayed and Henri Paul. The crash took
place at the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris,
France. Both Fayed and Paul were
pronounced dead at the scene and a fourth
person inside the car Trevor Rees-Jones was
the only surviving person. Princess Diana was
taken from the car alive but sadly later died in
a hospital. However, the question we have is
how something like this can happen? How can
the princess of Wales die in a car accident while she is supposed to be protected?
Her body guards were able to protect her from crazy fans and people trying to
hurt her day in and day out but ultimately failed to protect her from themselves
and their bad driving abilities. Initial
reports came out as the car was
traveling way faster than it was
supposed to in order to out run pesky
paparazzi. However, we are learning
now that that is not correct and the car
crash was actually a result of drunk
driving. The driver, Henri Paul was
intoxicated while operating the vehicle
which impaired his judgement and
driving abilities resulting in him going 60-70mph in a 35mph area. He lost control
and slammed into the 13 th pillar supporting the tunnel, the car then spun around
and hit a stone wall before finally coming to a stop.
Wait? Wizards Exist?!?
Young Harry Potter has to lead a hard life: His parents have died in a car crash
when he was still a baby, and he is being brought up by his Uncle Vernon and Aunt
Petunia. For some reason, the Dursleys let him live in the small chamber under the
stairs, and treat him more like vermin than like a family member. His fat cousin Dudley,
the Dursley's real son, keeps bothering Harry all the time. On his eleventh birthday,
Harry Potter finally receives a mysterious letter from a certain Hogwarts School of
Witchcraft and Wizardry, telling him that he is chosen as one of the future students of
that supposedly renowned school. Hagrid, the gigantic man who brought the letter,
finally introduces Harry into the real circumstances of his life: His parents were a wizard
and a witch, they were killed by the evil wizard Voldemort protecting him. Harry still has
a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead from that event. Since he survived the attack as
a baby, and also somehow deprived Voldemort from his powers, he has been famous in
the wizarding world ever since. The Dursleys, strong disbelievers in that magical crap,
never told Harry anything about his true self. So, Harry is strongly surprised, yet
absolutely happy to start his training. At Hogwarts, Harry meets his teachers, and
becomes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The three of them
accidentally find out that the potions master, Severus Snape, seems to plot on stealing
something that is guarded by a three-headed dog. Since nobody would believe some
first years to have found out such important things that even would incriminate a
Hogwarts teacher, they take it on themselves to find out what Snape is up to. Their
quest for the truth leads across many obstacles, from keeping up the everyday school
life, a bewitched Quidditch match, Fluffy, the three-headed monster dog and quite
some tasks one has to overcome to get to the guarded object.
Throughout the course of the book, the characters move seamlessly through the
narrative. However, a few times in the last four chapters, the storytelling begins to
sputter, and there are twists I found irritating. To serve the plot, characters begin
behaving out of character. Most noticeably, Hagrid, the gentle giant of a groundskeeper
who has selflessly protected Harry over and over, suddenly turns so selfish he is willing
to let Harry be punished for something that is Hagrid's fault. Despite these minor
criticisms, the book is a success and it clearly lives up to the hype. People should hop
onto this series as soon as possible!
Bill Should’ve Kept It In His Pants
President Bill Clinton decided to get too close to one
of the White house’s interns Monica Lewinsky which led to
one of the biggest white house scandals ever. This entire
scandal eventually led to the president’s impeachment in
1999. Monica Lewinsky was a 21 year old unpaid white
house intern for Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, during her
time as an intern she met President Clinton. During a
government shutdown sending most of the paid government official’s home, it
allowed her to get close to the Bill Clinton. Well, one thing led to another and on
November 15 they did the nasty for the first time, over the next few months they
had “fun” for a total of 9 times. For the most part this was forgotten and
disappeared never to be brought up again. However, Lewinsky was transferred to
the Pentagon where she meets a women named Linda Tripp. In 1998 the sexual
relationships came to light, and Clinton profusely denied any sexual relations with
Lewinsky. Lewinsky confides into Tripp about her sexual relations with Clinton and
Tripp begins to secretly record Lewinsky. However on August 6 th 1998 Lewinsky
testifies to a grand jury about the accusations of Sexual relations and misconduct.
And almost exactly two months later on October 8 th 1998 the U.S house of
Representatives vote to authorize impeachment inquiry. On December 11, the
house of Judiciary committee approved three articles of impeachment and on
December 19 th the house impeached Clinton. However, he was eventually
acquitted on both articles of impeachment.
Backstreet’s Back!
“Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” is the best thing yet! The first single
released from the group's second international album Backstreet’s Back in
1997, and the third single and fourth track from their debut U.S. album on
March 31, 1998. The U.S. debut was originally released without the song,
which references the band's return via their second international album.
However, once it was decided to release the single in the U.S., the album
was re-released with "Everybody" included. Great choice by the group to
include this song in the new album. Possibly the most defining track of the
late 90’s pop explosion. The music video is something that has not been seen
before. Huge, produced like a movie and a little more graphic and exciting
than the boys were — a perfect statement of intent for a group (and
movement) ready for total world domination. With "Everybody"'s campy,
horror-themed video and dirty graphic images, BSB became the new
princes of pop.
The catchiness, upbeat and fun vibe that the song gives off sticks with
the ear’s of people in the world. BSB completely killed the game with this
song, solidifying their presence in the Pop world and culture of the time. No
matter where you go, everyone will join in with you when singing or
listening to this song. For only the group’s second album dropped
worldwide, it is pretty impressive to have so much success and fans,
especially having this song as the face. Backstreet is back and here for the
long haul!
